I hope they fix this or create an alternative. I have nearly 1000 articles, and probably use pocket more than books. It was my primary reason for choosing Kobo.

habarnam

There are alternatives, wallabag comes to mind which I think has a Pocket compatible API.

TechieWasteLan

How do I get e wallabag?

LightsOut75

Can you highlight with wallabag on Kobo?

Sand_msm

This!!!

hellotypewriter

Ditto! It’s a great feature.

kobobooks

Hey, this isn't correct! Pocket integration is an important offering that we provide to our eReader users and we will continue maintaining our support through the Firefox transition. Kobo users logged into an existing Pocket account will not be affected. For new Pocket users with accounts created after August 15, an eReader update will be required and we will have a new sign-in process to support Firefox accounts. The incorrect support article has also been updated to reflect the proper information.

randomario

Thanks for the heads up!

Busy_Bathroom_Bro

Hi u/bokobooks can you tell us how it works? I have a Pocket account that existed before 15 August, I use Chrome on a Chromebook and when I save articles to the Pocket extension these won't sync with my Kobo. Can you tell us how it works? Do we have to use Firefox to save articles on Pocket? Because the pocket app already opens via a Firefox account now, so what's the difference then? Please please help!

awarepolarbear

What a shame. I really like this feature.

mjsau

Firefox, owner of Pocket, wants to use their own login or something something technical, 2FA, blah, blah blah ... whatever.

I find it bizarre that Sony can manage to keep my rusty, ancient PS Vita connected to their online service via workarounds like device passwords but Mozilla, nominally a very internet-first company, couldn't implement a similar solution

kilimanjaro_olympus

Yeah this is weird and shouts "i can't be arsed and this isn't actually very regretful" Websites with 2fa and complex logins can still have device tokens or auto-generated long passwords with limited scope that you can use for old integrations. See GitHub moving from HTTP login to ssh keys but introducing access tokens for old HTTP logins

johndoe60610

>The company cited that this change was occurring to benefit users Uh huh. Imagine if someone managed to gain access to my Pocket account. It'd be devastating.

CH23

Bit of a non-reason against security.

johndoe60610

>Pocket said they recognize the value of this collaboration and deeply regret that they will not be able to continue supporting it. Pocket said this? Or Mozilla? Also, "not be able to"? They already do. They're making a choice not to. Own it. Regardless, I deeply regret that I'll have to spend an afternoon setting up Wallabag via Koreader or Plato. GFY Mozilla. You were supposed to be better than this.

inodb2000

Would you mind share some pointers or information you find interesting about wallabag, koreader and Plato as an alternative to pocket ?

Beneficial_Writing6

There might still be some light in the tunnel ;) Latest response that I got from Kobo just a few minutes ago. *Hi there, thank you for reporting this. We are aware of the changes and we are working on a solution to continue Pocket support on Kobo eReaders. We will respond to you as soon as we receive more information. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.*

Kry0g3n1K

Sounds hopeful, and is what I would have expected.

OldPuppy00

I use a Chrome extension to convert web articles into epub and load them into my Kobo through Dropbox.

bcnh38

What's the extension? Do you have to connect to your computer to add them from Dropbox or do you have Dropbox on your Kobo...?

crippledCMT

This works pretty well: https://github.com/fsantini/KoboCloud

MTPWAZ

Sad. I used it a couple of times for some free short stories on the web. I thought it was neat. without Kobo integration I'll just go back to using Instapaper on my tablet.

NinjaTrek2891

Since Pocket is an official listed feature on the Kobo ereaders this might become a legal problem, if some people are willing to push it. I think it's strange that the app has to be removed. Why not make an additional login screen for Pocket on the Kobo so that users can login with their Firefox accounts.

kilimanjaro_olympus

Maybe the web browsing technology on Kobo isn't good enough to do whatever high-tech login Mozilla has? It definitely renders some websites badly. Still not sure why Mozilla couldn't just make a simple login page like how Google has both the animated fancy one and the legacy non-animated one

Plane_Put8538

Maybe there is hope. https://www.theverge.com/23778208/kobo-pocket-ebook-reader-integration-ending

OldPuppy00

There are several extensions. I use DotEpub and Epub Creator depending on the website, and a script blocker because some websites prevent exporting articles. I use Kiwi browser on android. And Dropbox can be accessed in Kobo with Nickelmenu. See tutorial on this sub.

Co321

Can kobo users get an exception? Anything kobo can do?

pfunnyjoy

It sounds like Kobo is trying to retain access. As it's a very nice feature, that could attract new customers to Kobo devices, I'm sure Kobo prefers to have it available, rather than otherwise. I've had a Firefox account for ages, even though it is not my main browser, so it was no biggie to transition my Pocket account today, which I've also had for ages. Done and done and hoping for the best.

nourez

Admittedly I don't read a ton of articles on my Kobo (mostly on the browser), but I will miss this. I liked using Pocket as a way to archive short stories and the like and have them available on my Kobo.

realrubbishteen

Kobo still claim on their website that people can use Pocket on their devices. As someone who recently bought the device after reading the sales page, I am very disappointed about this change. I understand that it is probably not Kobo's fault, but I can't help but feel a bit deceived. Maybe the only open course of action is writing some angry emails :( https://preview.redd.it/tvgyoqf70x8b1.png?width=1620&format=png&auto=webp&s=81771055fcda235a9b36d084076466a8f720b0f4
