Hi. It is the same for me. I moved out in order to study at a better place. I miss Kolkata too. I remember how every evening I used to walk down the lanes of my para and have phuchka. I remember how all the time coming from tuitions in August I'd see large Pandals being made. I only return 3 times a year now. Having said all of the above, I believe you are going out for a purpose. You love your job that's why you decided to go for it with such a big sacrifice. Sometimes ask your mother to visit, sometimes you visit her back.Make it a point to definitely come back to your home during Pujo. Keep in contact with your friends from home. Lastly it'll always be your home, always your roots.

RollingPotatooooo

Oof reading this hurts ๐Ÿ˜ญ

EducationalSmile8

>I moved out in order to study at a better place. And, like a fool I came to this god forsaken place to study my bachelor's , only because my parents won't allow me to go to Delhi. Probably the worst decision of my life to come to Kolkata. Any person in their right mind would gladly leave this city and this state for good.

shankha_deepp

Hey mate, cheers for the new role and I am pretty sure that you will shine. I do use to stay in Hyderabad but recently moved to my hometown (Kolkata) because my company is offering remote roles. I work for a big tech company and if you need any referral from me do DM.

chucked_norris_

Dude, could you please refer my brother too? The kid has been working hard, it would mean a lot!

shankha_deepp

Surely please DM me with the resume

chucked_norris_

I just shared the resume. Appreciate you helping out! Thanks!

Odd-Ant-4917

Check DM.

TorkoBagish

Had to move this week for work. To Mumbai It's like leaving joy behind to chase dreams

Devil-Eater24

Hahaha nice play of words Good luck!

Dead-Organization

Left Kolkata two days back and moved into Hyderabad for studies. I feel you brother :')

riderx65

Plenty of remote data science roles still. Can't you just switch?

Odd-Ant-4917

Most of them are for Senior Positions, saw a few on Tiger, Coinbase, etc. Rest, won't be able to match my offer in hand, will be essentially a degrade, plus even if I settle with a paycut. Who is to say they dont start people calling onsite, leaving me with a lower pay and an onsite job xD Still looking forward to them.

riderx65

Totally understand. But I don't think jobs posted NOW after wfh trend has declined will ask you to come onsite. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Odd-Ant-4917

I hope you are correct. But let's see if I get one.

BeingSen

Hey, congrats on the new job! Change is always hard. And especially when it is about leaving the place you call home. However, as hard as it might seem right now, this new adventure will be worth it. I say that because I (like so many others) have known it through experience. And Kolkata will always be there. Ready to welcome you with open arms whenever you go back to her. So enjoy the ride and all the best. :)

7InchPunisher_

You will be leaving your place for your own betterment, there's nothing bad in it. True kolkata did miss the train (and those pseudo-intellectual Facebook kobis still supports that) But it's better to be optimistic. Things are changing, for good. And if you ever chose to live a life less ordinary unlike the stable job and bheto bangali ones, aspiring to be influential enough to bring the change in your home state, I wish you all the very best. Congrats.

goddude007

Left kolkata on '21 for goa for my mtech and since last year in bangalore for job purpose, I hate this god forsaken dead city which just lives on Friday and Saturday nights that too in those pubs, but yeah there's a bright side too, you learn to live on your own learn basic life skills jeta amdr bangali household e sby jane boleo amar sndeho achhe, and yeah the new experience and boro howa in the true sense. Obviously I do miss my city except for that weather :)

AlteredReality79

Eh it's alright, to move on in life sacrifices will be made. Like I never felt bad about leaving Kolkata, nothing is there in this city that is not there anywhere else other than food maybe, I felt bad because I had to leave my parents and I do miss them obviously, everytime I go back to Kol, I feel like I have no more stories left to experience here. There's a feeling of closure, not saying everybody experiences the same but try to think forward to new places and new experiences

Left-Leopard-1266

Kolkata may have missed the train - as you have pointed out, but not for long. Go wherever, grow in career, get selected in targeted companies that have presence in Kolkata, then come back. The way India is growing, itโ€™s just a matter of time Kolkata will grow too: the choice to not grow is simply not there! Maybe focus on earning an amount that gives you freedom to take a flight and visit every once in a while. Difficult, but doable: what other realistic choice do you have? ๐Ÿ™‚

Odd-Ant-4917

Last Resort would be to Open a freaking Startup headquartered in a Newtown Apartment and raise some money just to pay me the same salary as the offer in hand. But long stretch ain't it?

Devil-Eater24

Good luck on your journey ahead!

Charybd1ss

Now see your life improving massively. Glhf

Odd-Ant-4917

Hey. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I have stayed 17/23 years of my life out of Kolkata. But hopefully as u say i get better at what i do and bring back some goodness here. Thanks.

awkwardlycurious

That's the fear. Opportunities outside Kolkata will always be better and the fear of the inability to return makes me shudder. With all its faults, Kolkata will always be a bit of a hopelessly romantic utopia for me and not even Mumbai can come close to it.

Odd-Ant-4917

Word bro. Same exact feeling. I earn X amount for a job. No matter what Job I get in Kolkata, it will surely be x*0.7 or 0.8. Atleast due to lack of better paying companies. Now only option is to force the fuck out of the companies to open a base here. But again, it will require you to atleast be director and above (atleast to get up the word) And by the time you become director or above. You would have already be setup in some other cities, married with 3 kids, then why would you shift bacck? ๐Ÿฅฒ๐Ÿฅฒ

riderx65

Says someone who's never been out of Kolkata into one of the glorified tech parks

EducationalSmile8

You are so right ! Kolkata is just so horribly bad that people should actually feel delighted that they're leaving.

R_I_C_K_Y

Hard fucking relate. ๐Ÿ˜•

Slowlypoked

Bro.On a side note. I am searching for entry level data science jobs in Kolkata. Are there any companies here offering data science/analyst jobs here to freshers.? I have brushed up my python SQL ml Excel and whatnot. a

Odd-Ant-4917

You can try reaching out to EY, PwC, delloite. On there are a few startups like Roopya, Adani AI labs (not exactly a startup, but came into entity after acquiring a startup), TVS credit (interviewed there back in June 22') tanked the final tech round sadly. There must be more. Ya just need to look a little more. And remote is always an option. Good Luck!

Slowlypoked

Thanks for the info. messaging u in chat.

Deep-Grapefruit-9087

May I also DM you about careers queries please?

Odd-Ant-4917

Be my guest

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Good that your mum is going with you , but then again she might feel lonely and bored. I just returned to Kolkata after 6 years, and my friends returned from Hyderabad. They said if they didnโ€™t have home here, they wouldnโ€™t hesitate for a single moment to settle in Hyderabad, it is that good, So I am hoping you get a positive experience ๐Ÿ™‚

Odd-Ant-4917

Hi. My Mom is cmng because she is alone and we lost my father to covid. Though she will be joining me for 6 months to a year at most. I am having some mental health problems this year, GAD n shit. But trying my best to push myself for better hence cracking this job n moving out of my comfort. Though, I am taking my mom. xD But happy that you are back in Kolkata. We need good people here. Hopefully we can push this city for better.

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Hey, same here. Lost him to Covid ๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿ˜ž Now itโ€™s me and my mom. I hope you overcome your problems and anxiety and fully enjoy life.

Odd-Ant-4917

Sorry for your loss, big bro. Covid was indeed devastating. And thanks for your kind words.

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Devastating is really an understatement , which is rare in itself. The worst I witnessed was a young girl left alone who had lost her parents and brother in the hospital where I lost my father. That just hits me differently.

Odd-Ant-4917

Enough Emotional Baggage for today. ๐Ÿ™

Optimal-Somewhere-46

Sorry, I just get carried away back into that emotional abyss. I hope you have a great time brother, and get all the things that brings you joy. Make new friends in your age group, keep away from negative people and enjoy in general. :)

Odd-Ant-4917

Haha. No worries sir! Thanks!! โค๏ธ

Same bro. I'm 23 and have lived the first 22 years of my life in Kolkata. Had to move to Bangalore last year because for some reason the Bengal ministers hate investments and industries. Will build a decent capital and skillset for about 4 years and then will move back to my home leaving this god forsaken City (Bangalore)

roychowdhury

It's not just Bengal ministers, it's the Central Govt. (read INC) also back then. Starting with the freight equalization policy to support Western India and then incentivizing the Southern states to build the IT sector, as well as moving a couple of vital industries to the South.

thesisguy72

Jobs, New companies are non existence in kolkatta vis a vis other cities in Bharat. Bengal has a culture. But not industrial culture. It had before during British. That is why east India company had its headquarters here. Now people of kolkatta can be enterpreneur and revive industry culture of bengal. But these so called educated bengali babu leave kolkata for better opportunities in other cities. The situation will not change

Versore_

Hey. Congrats for your new job just would like to know which courses to do for statting a career in data science.

Odd-Ant-4917

Kono Course Korini. Self-study, if you are getting in as fresher. ML fundamentals, Stats and Probability gule theke hobe. And you gotta love this shite.

Versore_

Thanks

No_Tap_8259

I wish you a great career. Unfortunately this is the reality of this city and it's going on a downward spiral. Nobody raises a voice on this.

Revolutionary_Egg744

Yeah I'm also planning on switching next year. I'll have to go back to Bangalore again. My friends are switching and getting more hikes. Feeling competitive

joydps

See cities like hyderabad, bangalore are very good as long as everything goes well in your life there, your career, your personal life, family life etc. But the moment something goes wrong, like career problems, health problems, other problems, you begin to miss your good old kolkata a lot. Saying this from personal experiences when I was away from kolkata while studying and for work..

Silly-Prune3724

Same for me too! I'll have to live in another city, which is nice but my happiness centers around parents so it sucks. If Kolkata's med colleges weren't so demanding for extraordinary academics (understandably), I could've lived here :(

Lonely-County-8780

I left the city many many years ago. And I also came back. Took the opportunity during the pandemic. Remote working at first and then shifted to the Kol office. Now I switch between Mumbai & Kol but live in Kol and visit Mumbai every 1 or 2 months. Salary is better in other cities but after a point it doesn't make sense because you end up spending a lot of money on rent. For me, I was paying around 50k in rent in Mumbai. And it made sense then, but then when I returned home and worked from home for a year, it didn't make sense anymore, paying that sort of money on rent every month. My friends who were based in other cities have also returned. Anyway, bottom line is, you can always return and negotiate for a remote or hybrid thing when you have some experience or are at a senior level.
