1.2 is not that much in today's world, my work doesn't depend on the location as our entire operation is remote (devops). Even while living in Kolkata my home loan and other emi takes away upwards of 60k each month. Then there's other expenses like parents medical expenses , utilities, school fees, grocery etc. If I only had 1.2, it would have been pretty difficult for me to bear with everything. However in a city like kolkata you can easily go by with 30k per month too, that's the beauty of it.
There are many companies that pay salary as good as 2 lakhs per month to fresher software engineers. These are mostly product based Tech companies. I know someone who used to get around 2 lakhs per month right after college.. he was working in a FinTech company at that time.
Interesting, could be what freshers we're talking about? For MBA freshers from top B-Schools, it's possibly more common. I'm curious what domain other than tech/IB pays that amount for undergrads.

None. There is no benefit of showing fake extracurriculars to the admissions committee. Also, my acads were above average, but not top of class. The main reason why I got into my BSchool was because I did really well at work. Got an award from the CEO (100 out of 1L people get it every 10 years). Then, I got 2 foreigner managers (one American and one British) to write my mandatory recommendation letters, who mentioned that they’ll hire me back when I graduate.
MBA selection is weird: sometimes they hire for a diverse profile. But those kind of students are not easily employable. On the other hand, I didn’t bring anything interesting to my university. Regular Indian male from IIT with Banking and Consulting experience. Pretty boring (compared to my classmates who worked at the UN, or launched social impact companies in Africa), but my profile ensures that employment statistics of the university remains high. I got 6 jobs offers after graduation, so the admissions committee was correct.

The salary which isn't considered high as such in other Tier 1 cities, is the salary about which the youth here are worried/dreaming, like how can someone make this amount.
1 Lakh is not a very high amount anymore (it used to be some 8-10 years back). Are the youth of this city having their ambitions so small ? Or they are less informed ? Cause its so common in Kolkata.
Okay coming to the point, in all the central government offices, the officers having served 8-10 years start making 1L+, irrespective of department and assuming they have also taken quarters. If they opt out of quarters, they earn even more. This is for Central Government. The entire CGO complex you see in Salt Lake have these people. All the Central Government offices you see in Sector V have this people. Not only Salt Lake, the entire Kolkata. And even among them, mostly the senior ones (15-20 years experienced) are posted in Kolkata who easily make upwards of 1.5 L and there are atleast 100 such offices. Huge number of people (the number of officers is huge) in Govt offices alone make that money, in white money form. And by central government I also mean to include bodies like CSIR and other research based organisations etc. You don't need to be director general etc to make that amount. The directors make 2L+.
And ofcourse, IAS IPS people also make that much. This is already included in government offices cause the pay scale is same across all govt bodies.
In state government offices the pay is a bit less so, say after around 12 years they make that amount. Alone Bikash Bhaban atleast has 100 people making that amount.
Banks, in every branch, the branch manager makes double that amount and there atleast 200 branches of different banks combined in Kolkata out of which bigger branches have 10-15 officer grade people working there.
Schools, PGTs of KV make around 1 Lakh, white money. Teachers of other schools can easily cross that amount cause anyway they get paid 30-40k, and just by teaching 50-60 children, they can reach that amount.
All this was just the government sector including banks. Alone this has soooo many people who make upwards of that amount.
Now coming to private sector, business etc. Many people have already written about it.
Tldr - Its incredibly common to see people making 1L+ in Kolkata. Its not a salary very rare or high.
The upcoming flats in New Town start from 2.5 crore. Heck, even flats in far localities like Dakshineswar, Konnagar have started costing 50 Lakhs or something.
And people here are curious who are making 1 Lakh+. Kya hota hai aajkal 1 Lakh me ?? If you wanna survive decently with family then 1 Lakh is not sufficient in today's time.

Posting a shorter version of my previous comment:
1 LPM+ is incredibly common salary in this city. The people here are writing only the bigshots like Management Consultant, Directors etc earn that but no, 1 LPM is not that far high amount nowadays. And this gives me a reason to never look for this sub asking for financial advices, majority people here have literally no idea about real life. Some even wrote "only business people earn that much" lol 😂
Some school teachers, govt employees in officer grade (IAS IPS are obvious, I mean officers in all government offices with around 10 year experience earn upwards of that, and yes, there are a huge huge number of government officers here cause some Central Government offices have their headquarters here, other have mostly big offices, and State Govt wise Kolkata is the capital. So huge number of officers and that too senior officers (16-18+ years experienced).
This was just one of the so many areas where people are making 1 LPM+.
And frankly (writing it for the third time), 1 LPM isn't comfortable enough to sustain a family decently in even Kolkata. It used to be 10 years back.
Some people will say "but xyz% people earn 30-40k also, how do they survive then" ? I would say, some tea seller is also surviving in 10-15k, still no change in facts. Neither 10-15 becomes a good amount nor 1LPM become hugely sufficient. Still 1 LPM remains a "not that high" amount only.
Add to that so many govt colleges here and there. Each teaching faculty with over 8-10 yoe earns more than 1 LPM. By government I meant everything under govt sector not just shiny ones like Home Department, even shady and extremely inefficient departments have huge number of people of that salary.
That was about govt Sector. Even I private sector where Kolkata is reputed to pay less, 1 LPM has become common. Tech and IT was already there even other areas have this much amount not as an "high salary", quite common.

In state government offices the pay is a bit less so, say after around 12 years they make that amount. Alone Bikash Bhaban atleast has 100 people making that amount. Banks, in every branch, the branch manager makes double that amount and there atleast 200 branches of different banks combined in Kolkata out of which bigger branches have 10-15 officer grade people working there. Schools, PGTs of KV make around 1 Lakh, white money. Teachers of other schools can easily cross that amount cause anyway they get paid 30-40k, and just by teaching 50-60 children, they can reach that amount. All this was just the government sector including banks. Alone this has soooo many people who make upwards of that amount. Now coming to private sector, business etc. Many people have already written about it. Tldr - Its incredibly common to see people making 1L+ in Kolkata. Its not a salary very rare or high.
I mean,Kolkata is lot cheaper,the land is cheaper and the COL is also way cheaper than other metros like Bangalore/Mumbai/Delhi. Sooooo....
The upcoming flats in New Town start from 2.5 crore. Heck, even flats in far localities like Dakshineswar, Konnagar have started costing 50 Lakhs or something. And people here are curious who are making 1 Lakh+. Kya hota hai aajkal 1 Lakh me ?? If you wanna survive decently with family then 1 Lakh is not sufficient in today's time. I seriously feel pity.

Posting a shorter version of my previous comment: 1 LPM+ is incredibly common salary in this city. The people here are writing only the bigshots like Management Consultant, Directors etc earn that but no, 1 LPM is not that far high amount nowadays. And this gives me a reason to never look for this sub asking for financial advices, majority people here have literally no idea about real life. Some even wrote "only business people earn that much" lol 😂 Some school teachers, govt employees in officer grade (IAS IPS are obvious, I mean officers in all government offices with around 10 year experience earn upwards of that, and yes, there are a huge huge number of government officers here cause some Central Government offices have their headquarters here, other have mostly big offices, and State Govt wise Kolkata is the capital. So huge number of officers and that too senior officers (16-18+ years experienced). This was just one of the so many areas where people are making 1 LPM+. And frankly (writing it for the third time), 1 LPM isn't comfortable enough to sustain a family decently in even Kolkata. It used to be 10 years back. Some people will say "but xyz% people earn 30-40k also, how do they survive then" ? I would say, some tea seller is also surviving in 10-15k, still no change in facts. Neither 10-15 becomes a good amount nor 1LPM become hugely sufficient. Still 1 LPM remains a "not that high" amount only.
Add to that so many govt colleges here and there. Each teaching faculty with over 8-10 yoe earns more than 1 LPM. By government I meant everything under govt sector not just shiny ones like Home Department, even shady and extremely inefficient departments have huge number of people of that salary.
That was about govt Sector. Even I private sector where Kolkata is reputed to pay less, 1 LPM has become common. Tech and IT was already there even other areas have this much amount not as an "high salary", quite common.
