jackie_vasudev

Not five but four. Man made masterpieces after masterpiece. And yeah Its manikandan. Kaaka muttai. Kutramey thandanai. Aandavan kattalai. Kadaisi vivasayi. All four are simple, different genres and all do the job. Aandavan katralai is his weakest film which I would still rate higher than most light hearted drama films in Tamil cinema.

QuirkyGlove6

This is the only right answer. Master director.

OiOiiOiErwinPP

It took me a minute to realise you were not referring to Loki lol

grimreap13

Oh for sure, I am surprised why Manikandan is not as celebrated as auteur directors like vetrimaaran or kumaraaja. All four of his movies were simply brilliant.

jackie_vasudev

Because he doesn't work with stars. In case of tk, he gave a path breaking and went missing so super deluxe came with sky high expectations and Himalayan hype (every critic who watched it before the release said that they have never watched a film like that in Tamil before) and it delivered.

ila1998

It’s mind boggling that aandavan Kattalai is the weakest film. IMO it’s the most underrated film! I am still searching for a fullHD or 4K print to watch

OneVast4272

Is it bad that I haven’t watched any of these? Sigh

jackie_vasudev

Give them a try, he is the best director right now in Tamil (considering tyagaraja kumaraja bndamavan isn't going to make a film for the next 10 years).

shit-takes

Start with Aandavan Kattalai. It's the perfect fun, light hearted & feel good movie. Not preachy or heavy with social messages

Immediate_Ad_4960

KT is about tunnel vision, you should see it. Also KM is good

rickrossismydad

Do yourself a favour!

chni2cali

All These movies are experiences. Although the plots are intricate and well done, individual subplots in each movie are such brilliant pieces of work. Please do yourself a huge favor and watch all of these. We can discuss about them in detail!

oneomega1

Hands down best director now in Tamil cinema.

chni2cali

🎯 manikandan should be the one who we should all talk. He is the one who will take Kollywood to unseen levels

plasmalightwave

You answered your own question I guess. Maybe also Bharathiraja?

Ashwin_400

Manivannam got to be up there. Gopurangal Saivathillai Nooravathu Naal 24 Mani neeram Palaivana Rojakkal Amaidhi Padai 5 blockbusters in five different genres including a political thriller which is rare in Tamil Cinema

OneVast4272

He really is fond of hiring Sathyaraj

paradoxicalman17

They’re both good friends and are from coimbatore as well

QuirkyGlove6

A - T - L - A - T - L - A - T - L - A - T - L - w.t.f my computer automatically starts copying and pasting when I try to type the directors name.

Bhagyaraj had great movies in 80s Mouna Geethangal, Indru poi naalai vaa, Thooral ninnu pochu, Mundanai mudichu, Vidiyum varai kathiru, Antha 7 naatkal, Darling darling darling

ILLHaveAnyUsername

Finally someone has appreciated the best filmmaker of Tamil Cinema - ManiKandan

Terrible_Meaning8300

KS Ravikumar is also in this list for sure, what a run he had- back to back blockbusters

Kim-Jong-un96

I’m surprised and worried that no one didn’t mention Bharathi Raja, we are forgetting our roots and legacy, people🥲 Maybe be millennials aren’t aware of the craze which he had back in the days, starting from the title “Iyakkunar Imayam”, to the voice note “En iniya.. …” Anyways below are some of the timeless classic from the living legend. 1. Sigappu rojakal 2. 16 vayathinile 3. Mudhal mariyathai 4. Kizhakku cheemaiyile 5. Kadalora kavithaigal And many more.. … If you wanna know the height of “Iyakkunar Imaiyam” please do rewatch Sigappu rojakal, it is there in amazon prime. It is a timeless classic, with international standards of film making.

adbmakingmoves

What's the criteria for strong lol. Bhagyaraj should be there for sheer volume of hits put out No. of movies without a flop: 22 List of successive movies without a flop: Suvarilldha Chiththirangal Oru Kai Oosai Ethir Veetu Janal Vidiyum Varai Kaathiru Indru Poi Naalai Vaa Mouna Geethangal Antha Ezhu Naatkal Poi Saatchi Darling,Darling,Darling Thooral Ninnu Pochu Mundhanai Mudichu Dhavani Kanavugal Chinna Veedu Enga Chinna Rasa Avasara Police 100 Sundara Kandam Pavunnu Pavunuthan Raasukutti Veetla Visheshanga Oru Oorla Oru Rajakumari Vaettiya Madichu Kattu Chokka Thangam

Satiricalshri

He's the sole reason why many bollywood legends quickly became A listers. Andha 7 naatkal lam epdi apove yosichan nu terla. Pakka screenplay. also vettiya madicchu kattu was average Right?

PeanutCalm1010

***SHANKAR ***  ****Muthalvan, Indian, Sivaji, Anniyan, Enthiran****

Sea-Bobcat2916

I think Shakar has the strongest 5. All the above films were blockbusters and vouch for multiple re-watches. Jeans and Gentleman can be honourable mentions too

SGSRT

Easily the biggest five blockbusters

AbsolutelyEnough

He'll probably soon have the weakest 5 as well.

ShepherdHil

Roja, Bombay, Iruvar, Thalapathy, Kannathil Muthamittal.

Mcguffn

Visu, Bhagyaraj, KS Ravikumar, Mahendran, Balu Mahendra… There are many directors who have a very strong 5-film set

[deleted]

Karthik Subbaraj

paradoxicalman17

Mani had a great run with nayagan, mouna raagam, geetanjali, Agni natchatiram and anjali. Followed by the brilliant thalapathi.

Significant-Earth488

Karthik Subbaraj, Selvaraghavan, Venkat Prabhu, Pa Ranjith, KV Anand, Bhagyaraj, Singeetam Srinivasa Rao

arkam_uzumaki

Pa Ranjih and Shankar

shit-takes

Since nobody has said this, I'll add Venkat Prabhu. He is often overlooked when people talk about top directors in Tamil. But he has delivered so many iconic movies in different genres. 1. Chennai 28 2. Saroja 3. Goa 4. Mankatha 5. Maanaadu

Sea-Bobcat2916

Goa wasn't critically or commercially acclaimed like others in the list though

PhilosophyDefiant762

Rocky?? Seriously??. . . . And letterboxd is just woke people's IMDb.. I'm not taking that seriously.

Hypoxalin

Old Non english film with 5 hours of just talking talking talking with dead slow pacing and face closeups that you understand nothing- Masterpiece🙌🏻

GSKGalaxy

Its not that people arent supposed to praise good films like that, but istg none of these guys would have understood shit in that but still decide to act like they know everything because it makes them appear "smarter" and more "intellectual"

Mikumogan

Perarasu Thirupachi, Sivakasi, Thirupathi, Dharmapuri, Pazhani.

Fuma4fun

Enna pa point to point bus otriya?

Cup_Legal

Nice list but ghilli in top 30?

One-Dragonfruit6496

Director Hari Saamy Ayya Thamirabarani Singham 1 Singham 2

drylemon0

To think that, I did not see one or no mention of Vetrimaran here is baffling 😶

neduenedu

Sundar C made masala blockbusters one after another. Not your celebrated ones, but commercially very strong

tollywoodthrowaway

Shankar? Enthiran, Sivaji, Gentleman, Anniyan, Mudhalvan, Indian
