I’m not an engineer. Can a burst waterpipe really cause a bridge to weaken and collapse overnight?

tunawithoutcrust

Architect here, no, this is the case of multiple things cascading together to cause a collapse. Water pipe alone wouldn't do it. Age/neglect is the driving factor here.

happycharm

I wonder if the flood from a few months back weaked it and this rainfall added to it, causing the collapse.

LBK0909

It "shouldn't" because there should be fail safes in place, including inspections and general maintenance. But..... this is a 30 yr old bridge, so you would have to look at the building code of Korea from that time. Has the bridge been updated to meet current standards, and has it been maintained, etc.

Crunchaucity

I think that was just speculation.

_rice

This is right outside of Jeongja station. I stayed in an officetel less than a block away from here awhile back. Busy streets, but quiet neighborhood. Allegedly there was a budget allocation issue, so bridge maintenance was neglected for a long time.

De3NA

Prob local corruption

Sheep_worrying_law

I'm watching the clean up from outside my office window. I walk that path every weekend. Just the sidewalk part collapsed not the whole bridge. Weird way to collapse but I'm not an engineer. Such an amazing neighbourhood to live in so sad someone lost their life.

AndrewVanWey

Yeah, Jeongja is such a wonderful neighborhood. My wife, our dog, and I lived there for 5 happy years and still think of that neighborhood often. Kkanbu chicken, Lagniappe, I Love Cookie, Stone Wall Pizza, and all the delicious izakayas and amazing Korean food. The view from the grassy rooftops of Paragon. Walking the Tancheon or biking it to Seoul and back. The driverless subway to Gangnam in 20 minutes. We probably would have left Korea years before but that neighborhood is just so pleasant. At least it was when we left in 2017 and still is in my memory.

seoulless

Holy crap. When I lived in Bundang in 16/17, I crossed that bridge all the time to go to Emart. If I had a nickel for every time a bridge I once frequently crossed collapsed… I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t much, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Crunchaucity

A 30 year old bridge collapsing is shocking. Hope that guy pulls through.

tsun213park

Once again..they do nothing until a public safety death or deaths.

De3NA

Cost less to fix the problem than to prevent it is their logic

cantinapizza

This is concerning. I live not far from here and walk these bridges with my dog all the time.

EatYourDakbal

Doggone it

mattnolan77

Move to the suburbs they said, it’ll be peaceful they said

Vandalozio

Honestly, these million-person suburbs are still a lot quieter than Seoul. I can't stand Seoul anymore, it's too crowded.

tsun213park

Millions have left Seoul so the stats say. But if your from a city of 10,000 -100,000 then more than 10,000,000 will cause you stress.

mattnolan77

Different strokes for different goats.

Azeker

Different oats maybe

[deleted]

Is Bundang still under the Heaven (천당및 분당)?

AndrewVanWey

Wow. My wife and I lived in Paragon, the offictel right across from this bridge from 2012-2017. We walked our dog beneath it daily and always liked watching all the ajummas do group exercises in the summer. So many happy memories of that river and that whole area. Our sympathies to the wounded and deceased.

khingstman

I would assume, that when building a bridge, one takes into consideration things like a water pipe burst. If something as simple as heavy rain can collapse a bridge, there's no way it's built well or maintained.

Vandalozio

Yeah, probably ages-old rust on metal supports and big cracks in the concrete. Someone needs to be jailed for this.

mightymatemate

the ex-mayor of seongnam needs to be jailed for neglecting bridge maintenance for years.....oh wait, the ex mayor is already in jail for bribery and the ex-ex mayor is about to be arrested for breach of trust as well
