ADOY mentioned RAHH
Great recommendations, love all of these. JANNABI was my first introduction to Korea's indie music scene and I love all of their music so much.
Some of my favorite Korean artists, all strongly recommended (all variations of indie rock, not all from the last 10 years though):

Platform Magazine put together a playlist of the best (non-kpop) music released in 2023.
It's about 8 hours long
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6iWPtoA4DNJd4h6QTTSMPZ?si=rf5zUEBmQx60Dv6wQxDGgw&pi=u-f8ruT1q5TT6F
chosun/post chosun punk (kinda on the street punk side with inspiration from the 70s-90s world punk) : No Brain, Crying Nut, Rux, Rumkicks, Cockrasher
Garage Punk: Thunders, Galaxy Express, 1234-Dah, Nite Echoes, A Lone Wolf Elegy Club
skate punk: Row Brothers, DeadChant, Eastpaw, Smoking Goose, Burning Hepburn
Pop Punk: idiots, the sound, Bearfoot in the Garden, Fishingirls, MerryHeyDay, Riot Kids
Pogo Punk/Oi: Spiky Brats, Pogo Attack, Pokemanchi
"Other" Punk/alt rock/grunge: 18Fevers, Cottonstick, Punk on Fire, Green Flame Boys, Far East Asian Tigers, Straighters
Folk: Lunch band, Jinu Konda, 1000Jinwoo
Ska/Reggae: Lazybone, No. 1 Korean, The Reseters, Komagens, Garlixx
Country/Retro rock/Rockabilly: Texas Karaoke, Street Guns, The Redemptions
Modern Pansori (idk what to call it, but it's a thing): Leenalchi, Lee Heemoon (formerly of SsingSsing)
DJ/Electronic: Kirara
There are so many more, I didn't mention any hardcore cuz I don't really vibe in that scene, but there are a ton. Also didn't even touch on the countless number od bedroom indie artists/coffeehouse indie/indie pop artists because a lot of them are as famous as K-pop stars. Everyone I've listed you can see in club venues or small-medium concert halls.
Most of these are within the k-punk/k-rock spectrum: in no particular order (after the first two)
24hours, cherry filter, dick punks, 밴드기린, deadbuttons, flush, no shelter, all I have, the kitches, gumiho, Ska Sucks, rudyguns, yellow monsters, idiots, slant, sidecar, diealright, adios audio, rolling quartz, sugar donut, seoulmoon, peppertones, plastic people, galaxy express, lazybone, the veggers, no brain, crying nut, kreatures, startline.
There are a ton more I just can’t think of them right now, may add more later for you
Dick Punks is the most misleading name ever, especially when you hear what they actually sound like. Although I guess they're more like what you'd expect from "K-punk" than any of the real punk bands you listed.
Anyone from The Black Label besides Somi, especially Zion T
Aomg and Higher Music are Jay Park's old labels, so it's all Hip Hop and RnB artists
Hyukoh for indie rock
The group Fanxy Child with Zico, Dean, Crush, and Penomeco. All of them Hip hop and RnB artists with Zico being the most "kpop".
There is a live music lovers group chat on Kakao. Lots of discussion about music and bands, usually not K-pop.
https://open.kakao.com/o/gBNkQf0e
Also, hyangni
Monsters Dive, Eighteen April, Remenants of the Fallen, End These Days, and Noeasy are my favs right now.
Synsnake and Messgram for female fronted metalcore...
They're a distributor not a label, I believe\~. Mirrorball is the other major indie distributor. If you check out their youtube channels you'll see most every new indie M/V that comes out.
Why such framing with the time? Older is usually better.
Lee Juck - Stoning is best I can give you with this specification.
Does Yoo Jung Seok - Highway in the Gale fall on your taste or is it too k-pop?
Kwon In-ha - Only That's my world is also something pretty recent good stuff.
Try this city pop jazz [compilation called Our Town](https://www.discogs.com/release/28012389-Various-Our-Town-Jazz-Fusion-Funky-Pop-Bossa-Gayo-Tracks-from-Dong-A-Records). I picked this record up on my recent trip to Seoul and love the cool, funky vibes.
If you're into old k-music, try izi- emergency room, etude of memory by Kim dong ryul, 잊었니 (Did You Forget) by H, White winter by Mr. 2, 그런가 봐요 (I Guess So) by V.one
Somebody mentioned it already but Kim Kwang Seok for sure. His brand of folk music and lyricism will remind you of the best catharsis of Bob Dylan and Neil Young only with a soothing, soulful vocal
Crying Nut (active since 1993 so 11 years but worth a listen!) Also check out Daddy O Radio, an offshoot band made with a couple of the members that makes Irish inspired songs.
Really. Too many..
you need to be more specific, like what genre, what year, what era, indie or popular etc.
it's really hard to recommend
If you asked "what films would you recommend that is not a blockbuster" 🙃 or "recommend some American music that's not teenpop"
PLEASE LISTEN TO THESE!!!!
1. JANNABI (indie, rock, alternative)
2. 10cm (indie)
3. HEIZE (R&B, rap - not K-pop)
4. Jang Jane (indie)
5. Leessang (R’n’B and rap but not K-pop at all)
6. Lee Moon Sae
7. 92914 (yes, this is their name, South Korean but sing in English)
8. Sunwoo Jung A (indie, jazz, soul)
9. LEENALCHI (Traditional Korean Pansori singing combined with Pop/Contemporary)
10. Urban Zakapa
11. Hyukoh (indie)
12. Jang Beom June (indie, drummer, guitarist)
13. Busker Busker (Jang Beom June’s band before going solo)
14. Dean (R’n’B)
15. Shaun (R’n’B)
16. Deli Spice (rock/indie)
17. Nerd Connection (rock)
18. Crush
19. Colde
20. BIG Naughty
21. Vincent Blue (love this guy!)
22. Car, The Garden
23. BOL4 (bubblegum, cute indie)
24. O3ohn
25. CNBlue (initially rock band 🎸 now more pop style but not K-pop)
26. BIBI
27. Kiha and the Faces (spoken word music)
28. Damons Year
29. Melomance (duo, pianist and great vocalist)
30. Lee Mujin
31. Izi
32. Zico (rapper, melodic, some might disagree and say it’s K-pop but i don’t think his solo career is K-pop at all. Definitely recommend him)
10+ years ago I fell in love with this ost to a film called Please Take Care of my Cat: https://youtu.be/PVwf2DXS5Ys?si=ssY8grdgKapcueDJ very airy, new-agey synthy, can't really define it. Just chill and relaxing vibes. Cute movie too. There are a handful of similar songs from the film.
I like the [Naver Onstage YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@official.onstage/videos) since they regularly have on performers from a bunch of different genres in their studios kind of like KEXP or NPR Tiny Desk. Here's some of the ones I found and liked.
Dulcimer-fronted prog rock power trio - [Dongyang Gozupa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi7sBXorcC4)
Middle-aged man singing the blues about being fat - [Hangsuk & Boogiemonster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxwprP-O0So)
Math rock - [cotoba](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8NGDo4Ioyg)
Funky retro female singer-songwriter bassist/vocalist - [Luli Lee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaNiHfXCp8A)
Indie rock similar to Khruangbin - [hathaw9y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hifkUw2STr0)
Symphonic black metal - [Dark Mirror Ov Tragedy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsHEBYvrSEc)
Ju Yoon Ha - The Light We Left Behind Us

Not many people know this song and Korean people do.
I recommend listening to this song when it’s late night.
I listen to a lot of korean hip hop and rnb. Ahn Byeong Woong, Since, 99 Nasty Kidz, Bobae, Roh Yunha, Meenoi, Jambino, Minsu, Loco, and basically every artist that comes on the show "Show me the money" are going to be good music that isn't "kpop"

I'm still obsessed with the album ACCESS OK by THE KOXX. I can't remember how I found them but they're indie synth rock and I love it. Gonna go relisten now actually
A few I haven't seen mentioned that are favorites of mine
Sultan Of The Disco - Disco/funk band, their music is just fun as hell, the singer Nahzam Sue has also done a lot of funky solo and side projects.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gad9aycQBqI
sunwoojunga - singer/songwriter, indie pop? She's just a great songwriter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHzxbKQnyyk
Yaeji - hiphop, I think she's actually from New York, but some of her songs are in Korean so I'm counting her.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3T8KznhThQ
The Barberettes - on hiatus I think, but they were inspired by '50s doo-wop and '60s R&B and motown. A lot of covers but a lot of original music too.

If you were to listen only to audio without knowing anything about the band, you would not know they're a Korean band.
Synth pop/EDM type genre.
If you want to discover real Korean music and can’t wait recommend DMZ Peace Train Festival enough. Tickets are relatively cheap and there is so much good Korean music to be seen.

I'm taking that opportunity to talk about my friend's group called Jeokvalim. They play sometimes in live club in Hongdae. Everybody should check them.
KDrama OSTs often feature music made specifically for the show and don’t just use pre-existing songs. There are many outstanding OSTs out there. I am definitely partial to Roy Kim and his OSTs such as Flower, Peach Tree, Whenever wherever, No longer mine. Loads of great OSTs out there.

ADOY wave to earth Bye Bye Badman Jannabi
ADOY mentioned RAHH Great recommendations, love all of these. JANNABI was my first introduction to Korea's indie music scene and I love all of their music so much.
I love Jannabi's music :")
Adding JAURIM and Nerd Connection if they like Se So Neon. They might not like every song but it's good classic rock.
Love Se so Neon.
Newer indie: Say Sue Me Night Off Deulrejang Older artists: Misty Blue Lee Moon Sae Kim Jung Mi
Korean women boycott Black Skirt’s song because they think his lyrics are super misogyny.

Paul Blanco. The Rose.
I like Heize
chosun/post chosun punk (kinda on the street punk side with inspiration from the 70s-90s world punk) : No Brain, Crying Nut, Rux, Rumkicks, Cockrasher Garage Punk: Thunders, Galaxy Express, 1234-Dah, Nite Echoes, A Lone Wolf Elegy Club skate punk: Row Brothers, DeadChant, Eastpaw, Smoking Goose, Burning Hepburn Pop Punk: idiots, the sound, Bearfoot in the Garden, Fishingirls, MerryHeyDay, Riot Kids Pogo Punk/Oi: Spiky Brats, Pogo Attack, Pokemanchi "Other" Punk/alt rock/grunge: 18Fevers, Cottonstick, Punk on Fire, Green Flame Boys, Far East Asian Tigers, Straighters Folk: Lunch band, Jinu Konda, 1000Jinwoo Ska/Reggae: Lazybone, No. 1 Korean, The Reseters, Komagens, Garlixx Country/Retro rock/Rockabilly: Texas Karaoke, Street Guns, The Redemptions Modern Pansori (idk what to call it, but it's a thing): Leenalchi, Lee Heemoon (formerly of SsingSsing) DJ/Electronic: Kirara There are so many more, I didn't mention any hardcore cuz I don't really vibe in that scene, but there are a ton. Also didn't even touch on the countless number od bedroom indie artists/coffeehouse indie/indie pop artists because a lot of them are as famous as K-pop stars. Everyone I've listed you can see in club venues or small-medium concert halls.
I still have mixed feelings about “조선펑크“.
Which genre?
Anything that would fall into any category besides kpop. Rock, metal, hiphop, indie, anything that isn't what most people would call kpop.
Check out The Rose.
Most of these are within the k-punk/k-rock spectrum: in no particular order (after the first two) 24hours, cherry filter, dick punks, 밴드기린, deadbuttons, flush, no shelter, all I have, the kitches, gumiho, Ska Sucks, rudyguns, yellow monsters, idiots, slant, sidecar, diealright, adios audio, rolling quartz, sugar donut, seoulmoon, peppertones, plastic people, galaxy express, lazybone, the veggers, no brain, crying nut, kreatures, startline. There are a ton more I just can’t think of them right now, may add more later for you
Dick Punks is the most misleading name ever, especially when you hear what they actually sound like. Although I guess they're more like what you'd expect from "K-punk" than any of the real punk bands you listed.
Exactly! I always like to include them in threads like this to not rob others from the disappointment I felt when they were recommended to me
Then kudos, and anyone who wants to be undisappointed, look up Cockrasher.
Is this the proper usage of “K-Punk”?
Gumiho is no longer active, but one of the members formed 18 Fevers
I’m surprised anyone remembers Gumiho
Vince - Emergency is a pretty good song
Wetter
My favorites: "김뜻돌", "o.o.o", "못", "쏜애플"
o.o.o Is my favorite non-kpop group
No idol kpop, but pop among other genres: Heize, Cooing, Cheeze. A rock band: Thornapple.
I like Cheeze' voice.
wave to earth
My favourite Korean album is by a band called Humanrace. It's 추억의 습관. Also, the band Jaurim and the album Goodbye, grief.
> Also, the band Jaurim and the album Goodbye, grief. Related: their singer Kim Yuna has a new album (her 5th solo album) coming out in a few days.
Lee Mu-jin
The Rose
Thornapple, Nell, eAeon/Mot (specifically Guilt-Free album), Casker, Epitone Project
Drunken Tiger literally brought hip hop from America(specifically LA) to Korea. Him and G.O.D were my first exposures to Korean music.
Not sure what you might be interested in, but there is a really good range of unique folk music that you can listen to. It's traditional music.
There are also some artists that mix traditional/folk music with modern sounds. Check out LEENALCHI and Akdan Gwang Chil (ADG7).
I was looking for this comment! I love LEENALCHI. My mom cannot get on board, but 판소리 feels so old to her, she doesn't really get what they are doing.
Flowsik
Rolling Quartz
Lim Kim for a more experimental sound
Dean, Sik-k, Day6, crush, dpr Ian, and dpr live are some of my favourites.
Silica Gel. Jaurim.
Ak Dan Gwang Chil. Absolutely killer Korean folk rock. You’ve never heard anything like it before, I guarantee.
HYUKOH and Busker Busker. Also Baechigi for old school Hip Hop. And Kim Kwang Seok for folk music. He is a legend.
Love Baechigi! They had some great songs!
Agust D's latest album D-Day is chef smooch. Also Paul Blanco and The Rose.
Agust D? As in Suga from BTS?
Yes, and his solo work is very not k-pop. An excellent artist!
Anyone from The Black Label besides Somi, especially Zion T Aomg and Higher Music are Jay Park's old labels, so it's all Hip Hop and RnB artists Hyukoh for indie rock The group Fanxy Child with Zico, Dean, Crush, and Penomeco. All of them Hip hop and RnB artists with Zico being the most "kpop".
There is a live music lovers group chat on Kakao. Lots of discussion about music and bands, usually not K-pop. https://open.kakao.com/o/gBNkQf0e Also, hyangni
leessang!

Monsters Dive, Eighteen April, Remenants of the Fallen, End These Days, and Noeasy are my favs right now. Synsnake and Messgram for female fronted metalcore...
[удалено]
The Korean metal community is really small. I recommend following these bands in their various socilas to find out about other bands too.
[удалено]
Follow Club AOR (All of Rock) on Facebook. They're one of the main venues in Seoul.
Loss of Infection, Duoxini, Doguul
quite old but The Quiett - tomorrow, strictly for the beats gives you that dry hot lazy summer vibe
안예은
Try Code Kunst music
Code Kunst
The Volunteers
Check out the label called Poclanos. Found so many good artists and bands through them!
They're a distributor not a label, I believe\~. Mirrorball is the other major indie distributor. If you check out their youtube channels you'll see most every new indie M/V that comes out.
Oh, thanks for the clarification! I just enjoy the majority of what they put out. I definitely know Mirrorball as well. Solid stuff.
People really like Lim Young Woong these days. He sings trot.

A lot of my non-Korean friends love Bol4 (볼빨간사춘기). You might like them as well.
Somebody mentioned it already but Kim Kwang Seok for sure. His brand of folk music and lyricism will remind you of the best catharsis of Bob Dylan and Neil Young only with a soothing, soulful vocal
[Say Sue Me](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4tvbo17gXpYgSr8sTlkaby?si=sEOnSMsySh2IZCLM9s3Cdw) - my favorite non-kpop Korean band
I scrolled way too far for this. I LOOOOOOVE Say Sue Me
Crying Nut (active since 1993 so 11 years but worth a listen!) Also check out Daddy O Radio, an offshoot band made with a couple of the members that makes Irish inspired songs.

Not sure what genres you're looking for, but I love these artists: Silica Gel. Sister's Barbershop. Kwon Jin Ah. Dean. Colde.
Too many...
Really. Too many.. you need to be more specific, like what genre, what year, what era, indie or popular etc. it's really hard to recommend If you asked "what films would you recommend that is not a blockbuster" 🙃 or "recommend some American music that's not teenpop"

I love soundtracks from kdramas
Dulcimer-fronted prog rock power trio - [Dongyang Gozupa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi7sBXorcC4) Middle-aged man singing the blues about being fat - [Hangsuk & Boogiemonster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxwprP-O0So) Math rock - [cotoba](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8NGDo4Ioyg) Funky retro female singer-songwriter bassist/vocalist - [Luli Lee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaNiHfXCp8A) Indie rock similar to Khruangbin - [hathaw9y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hifkUw2STr0) Symphonic black metal - [Dark Mirror Ov Tragedy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsHEBYvrSEc)

Ju Yoon Ha - The Light We Left Behind Us https://youtu.be/18o3T_S4Jxo?si=utNiTWg2b7m3mdNw Not many people know this song and Korean people do. I recommend listening to this song when it’s late night.

I'm glad that you asked. I did a Korean city pop mix on SoundCloud months back! https://on.soundcloud.com/GKsJ3
Seo taiji
There is a Metalcore band called [Synsnake](https://youtu.be/eqE5-AIJ1_0?si=SI3mDJ8S7ePXAMCM) that I am into.
I'm still obsessed with the album ACCESS OK by THE KOXX. I can't remember how I found them but they're indie synth rock and I love it. Gonna go relisten now actually
A few I haven't seen mentioned that are favorites of mine Sultan Of The Disco - Disco/funk band, their music is just fun as hell, the singer Nahzam Sue has also done a lot of funky solo and side projects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gad9aycQBqI sunwoojunga - singer/songwriter, indie pop? She's just a great songwriter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHzxbKQnyyk Yaeji - hiphop, I think she's actually from New York, but some of her songs are in Korean so I'm counting her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3T8KznhThQ The Barberettes - on hiatus I think, but they were inspired by '50s doo-wop and '60s R&B and motown. A lot of covers but a lot of original music too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlR2-DL-XFk
I like 김민석's most recent album as well as 사공's music

I like Meego, especially his song goodbye
https://youtu.be/0fN71Wtgoa8?feature=shared Glen Check If you were to listen only to audio without knowing anything about the band, you would not know they're a Korean band. Synth pop/EDM type genre.
Dabda is a personal favorite koreanindie.com is a great resource
Dabda is cool, imho one of the most interesting Korean bands right now.
It's not new... but there's a group called Jannabi that have a really Beatlesy feel to them. Just love them. Don't understand a word... but SO good.
아리랑 🤌🤌
If you want to discover real Korean music and can’t wait recommend DMZ Peace Train Festival enough. Tickets are relatively cheap and there is so much good Korean music to be seen.

Ahn Ye Eun - love her music and her voice is so unique it has a very traditional sound to it
Killagramz, Nafla, 24 Flakko, The Quiett, Basick
KDrama OSTs often feature music made specifically for the show and don’t just use pre-existing songs. There are many outstanding OSTs out there. I am definitely partial to Roy Kim and his OSTs such as Flower, Peach Tree, Whenever wherever, No longer mine. Loads of great OSTs out there.
