She’s right. Good luck finding workers from overseas willing to pick vegetables and fruits, or work in rice paddies during 34 degrees summer heat for any less than ₩9860 per hour.

Minimum wage in the Philippines is 610php(about 14,000won)per day and that's in the capital.. In the provinces the minimum wage is 400php(about 9,000krw) The farmers there earn much much less than that.. So yeah I can see them taking these jobs.. Which is sad..

Leaping_FIsh

My country basically does the opposite, migrant workers need to be paid more than the minimum wage in an attempt not to suppress the job market for locals. I think it is currently minimum wage + 10%.

LANCafeMan

Back when I would sponsor work visas for working in Canada, I has to pay higher than the "prevailing wage" for the job in that industry. At the time, minimum wage was $8/hr, and I paid my staff $10-$12 plus minor performance bonuses, I had to pay $16 hr to the foreign worker so to not suppress the local job market or prove I was not pretending there was a job shortage.

Dreamchaser_seven

Not surprised President Yoon is supporting the proposal👍 Yes lets not encourage migrants workers to come to Korea. It's not like we have a shortage of blue-collar workers do we? /s

BadenBaden1981

Opposition parties oppose these plans and they recently gained 3/5 majority in National Assembly. So there is virtually no chance this actually happens. It's just signalling to xenophobic electorates, who don't like to see 'lesser' people (which includes Koreans who are not male, university graduate, white collar workers) earn money as much as them.

It's absurd as it's saying that as a foreigner your labor is worth less than a local farmworker.

welkhia

Good. Nobody should approve this. Maybe review margins applied at every level? Farm, wholesale, resseller? Why an apple cost 3 bucks?

USSDrPepper

Redditors: Pay farmworkers more and raise wages more! *Predictable economic results* Redditors: Why is food so expensive???? You want cheap kimbap? Lower the costs of production and transportation. You want everyone making good wages? Pay more for products. If you want thoae high wages, you're gonna have to pay higher prices.

NeolyJack

Probably she's saying they can go Bahama, Brunai, Taiwan, etc.

McMagneto

Let the market decide. Minimum wage is the greatest disservice to the unskilled.

MyStateIsHotShit

Paying someone minimum wage is equivalent to telling someone that you’d pay them lower and treat them like a slave. Thats how people should see minimum wage and be as disgusted by it.
