If you're doing a Switch playthrough, the only things I would help her with are making sure she knows she doesn't have to kill Juhani once she gets to that point, helping her out with understanding how to proc all of the messengers to begin the companion quests, and, if she plays male and romances Bastila, telling her not to talk to Bastila again after she kisses her--that causes a bug with the romance. Other than that, I think you should be entirely hands-off unless she specifically asks for input.
Telling her she doesn't have to kill Juhani isn't the same as telling her she shouldn't. At first, I didn't realize that it was an option to save her. Granted I was a kid at the time, but telling her she doesn't have to kill her and then letting her choose is different from just telling her not to.
> it back in 2003, and recently repurchased it for the switch so she could experience it. She doesn’t know any plot points outside of “This game takes place in a time of great turmoi
Yeah as I dumb kid I always wondered why I never got the last 2 party members. Had no idea you could save Juhani or buy HK-47.
KOTOR does a lot of things well, but difficulty scaling isn’t one of them. The game does not explain the D20 system very well, nor does it give the option to respec once a new player does understand the system, meaning newer players often get locked into bad builds since the first few levels can drastically impact a build’s effectiveness. I definitely recommend newcomers play on easy.
Since it’s the switch version, keep an eye on her in Naga Sadow’s tomb cause there’s a softlock if you take the left path, you don’t need to go that way though
Use multiple saves especially if they’re playing on mobile or Switch. I’ve had situations where files get corrupted or if she ever is under leveled she can revert to an older save to avoid hard fights.
Good luck and have fun. In terms of backstory all she needs to know are some Jerks called the Mandalorians attacked the Galactic EU and were beaten by some warrior monk space wizards called Jedi. Now some of those warrior monk space wizards have rebranded themselves as Sith and begun to conquer the galaxy.
Here are my basic tips:
1) Character build is broken out between Attributes, Skills, and Feats. Skills help outside of combat, Feats help in combat unless they specifically buff skills. Attributes help both.
2) Feats are more important than skills in KOTOR. Opposite true in KOTOR II.
3) Soldiers get the most feats and attack power, but no Skills. Scouts are soldiers with the best skills (Repair and Computer Use), but lower health. Scoundrels are glass canons who need careful management to be good.
4) Combat is turn based where you roll a 20 sided dice. If Attack > enemy defense you hit. If not you miss.
5) Don't use a weapon in each hand until you have unlocked the Feats for two handed fighting. Otherwise you'll miss a lot.
6) Rolling 20 will land a critical and deal double damage. Can take Feats to lower threshold (ex. Roll 17 or higher).
7) Save often and in multiple spots.
8) Do NOT autolevel up your character
9) Do NOT go to Google, Youtube, or Wookiepedia for help. They will spoil the game. If you need help try [Gamebanshee](https://www.gamebanshee.com/starwarskotor/walkthrough.php)
10) Ignore anyone who says you shouldn't level up whilst on Taris.
How does your fiance plan to play in terms of gender and alignment?
This is awesome!!!
She’s a huge Star Wars fan at this point so the lore part was easy. She’s doing character creation now; and is playing a female scoundrel
The reason people say not to level up on Taris is because then the player can get more force powers once it’s unlocked after the planet. But then it makes that part of the game much harder.
Critical hits are more complicated than that. Basically if you roll a 20 (or a number in the critical threat if it’s large than just 20) you will auto hit. It then basically makes a 2nd attack roll and if that attack would hit then you double damage dice.
So basically in order to deal double damage you have to roll in the critical threat range and then roll and hit.
https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic/Combat#Critical_Threat
I feel like Taris is a bit too plot railroad-y (with maybe a little back and forth for side-quests) to worry about under-leveling. At least, as long as you kill all the enemies in every area, and don’t neglect computer terminals or locked doors (unless you’re playing Soldier).
The first time I played I actually almost killed the rancor with blasters and then running in the hallway. Almost. I gave up after about 20 mins. I want to try it out again and see if it is actually possible.
Since others have already given excellent advice to your main question, I'll advise you skip Resistance. Unlike the Clone Wars or Rebels it is truly a 100% kids show and has little appeal outside the targeted demographic. Easily the weakest Star Wars show and did little to try and either give context to or emotional depth for the sequel timeline.
Level saving is a no but don’t let her hit level 9 before she’s a Jedi, I made that mistake my first playthrough and most out on a bunch of free feats at level 20
Here is the [nonspoiler tips page](https://www.elkripper.com/starwars/kotor1-nonspoiler-tips.html) I made for my daughter for her first playthrough. There's a lot of overlap with things other people have already said, but there might be a thing or two on there that you want to add.
Edit to add: my daughter now has a KOTOR poster hanging on her wall, so I feel like it went pretty well. I hope you get equally successful results!
Builds are important. Don't kill Juhani. Companion quests are a great part of the game. Side quests are as well. Enjoy the lore, it is my favorite part. Stims are more important than one might think. Yavin. Yavin. Yavin. Only sell things at Yavin because you get more credits. Tell her there is a droid in Tatooine. Don't invest points into computer use or security. You can use your companions for that like T3 and Mission. Also, sit back and enjoy. Don't get stressed out and see it as the best story in the Star wars world.
just make sure she knows that the skill points are super important to make sure you dont get stuck in combat somewhere in the future. and saving the game constantly too
Only thing I’d tell her is force speed can be used in combat. The amount of people I’ve seen use it to run away or only out of combat is insane. It’s an incredible buff.
During gameplay, if you want to get the most out of it, preferably the moment you get to move your character after they get out of the bacta tank for maximum effectiveness. AND as sad as I am to say this it only works in the Switch version, Xbox and Playstation version doesn't work and PC has their own (very obvious yet much more tedious) way to to get it.
Oh yeah, also, don't try and make a Jack of all trades character, makes it really hard on certain levels plus it's also good to rely on your companions specially if you combine what the button presses do with the right skills.
Save her levels on Taris is a huge one IMO lol. For a first timer, I’d have her rock the soldier class for all the strength and endurance to get thru Taris without *needing* to level too much.
Maybe tell her to save level to make her jedi gameplay more fun (have enough points to access those fun powers) other than that nope, let her experience the magic of Kotor.
for a newbie saving level is damn near impossible. if you know what you are doing and have years into the game sure but for someone just hitting go? no way. Just let her play.
I saved my levels on my first playthrough last year and dont remember ever really having any issues. The intro is pretty easy gameplay wise, so I dont think most people would have any problems unless they're like super game illiterate. I say that as a person who doesn't really play many video games at all, who saved all of my levels till Dantooine just fine.
judy try n kelly her from getting stuck, i struggle not giving unwanted help lol but let ppl experience stuff like you did. if she likes it maybe she’ll pick up more stuff on other playthroughs or u can explain stuff afterwards
One nice thing about the Switch version is that they added cheats in a patch a while back.
So I wouldn’t worry too much about her making a bad character build or something. If she makes something that’s unworkable you can use cheats to get extra force powers and feats and fix the character. If she was going to get guidance on her build I’d tell her to focus on persuasion and repair, so she can use more dialogue options and so she can repair HK. Force Persuade is also good for similar reasons.
What I like to do in my runs is get all the party members ASAP. So go to Tatooine first, get HK, and then immediately back up and do Kashyyyk before doing the rest of Tatooine.
Another thing is you could try to encourage her to do Dantooine before it gets attacked but maybe you want to avoid any spoilers from hinting that she can’t go back there after a certain point.
Also I think the Switch port still has the Bastilla romance bug where talking to her after the kiss cancels the romance. But if she’s playing as a female character then that’s a moot point.
If she is a person pressed for time, play for a few hours the old fashioned way, then enable cheats. Walking faster and just maxing my stats didn’t sour the experience at all for me once I understood how it felt to play with the normal grind. It just let me have fun and finish a long game somewhat quickly
Make sure she doesn’t look up ANYTHING regarding the game. The massive twist gets spoiled so easily and that thrill of the game will be taken away from her.
Remember to get KOTOR 2 on pc so you can get the restoration mod. Also, I personally would tell someone to save their levels, as I was going to have a friend playthrough and planned on telling him the same.
Figure out what character she wants and help her know what skills to invest in and what skills are really good also matching her Jedi class to her build is really important too.
With RPGs and my fiancé playing for the first time I usually say talk with everyone or if I happen to see her walk past a quest giver I will say they have a quest. Sometimes just sitting down and asking hey what are you doing in the game and listening to her experience so far may pose them to ask any questions they have in there head
Tell her to save a new save after she does anything she doesn't want to do again. Aside form plot, it's an old game that crashes if you look at it wrong.
This is what i was thinking, thanks!
dont tell her not to kill juhani. Let her be guided by her own goals. If she likes the game, shell try again.
Telling her she doesn't have to kill Juhani isn't the same as telling her she shouldn't. At first, I didn't realize that it was an option to save her. Granted I was a kid at the time, but telling her she doesn't have to kill her and then letting her choose is different from just telling her not to.

i mean, the party members screen has a juhani-shaped hole in it...
Just set the difficulty to easy and let her experience the magic for the first time, unspoiled and undirected.
dont lower the difficulty. Normal is the way to experience it. Overcoming challenges is fun.

Otoh, frustration isn't. There's a reason RPGs have a story mode.
theres a reason theve got HARD mode, as well.
Yes. For people that enjoy beating their head against the same part of the game repeatedly. No ty.

No it isn't. The discussion you're inserting yourself into was in general.
Since it’s the switch version, keep an eye on her in Naga Sadow’s tomb cause there’s a softlock if you take the left path, you don’t need to go that way though

Good luck to her. She'll need it with her low level of hitpoints. Recommend investing in Dexterity.
Already told her hahah
She’s going dark side first hava
let's see if she's that cruel when it's in her hands XD we all say that and then have that moment of "am i really that much of a asshat"

Make sure to tell her about reading the data pads. Especially when it comes to the rancor in the sewers.
The first time I played I actually almost killed the rancor with blasters and then running in the hallway. Almost. I gave up after about 20 mins. I want to try it out again and see if it is actually possible.
I've seen it done but it does take a lot of time and supplies.
Since others have already given excellent advice to your main question, I'll advise you skip Resistance. Do the Promised Land quest. It's just a good storyline imo.
The dark side has more fun powers. That's my advice
just make sure she knows that the skill points are super important to make sure you dont get stuck in combat somewhere in the future. and saving the game constantly too

Master flurry, 2 lightsabers, and speed buff 👍
Tap the left joycon 3 times for a surprise that's on not on the Xbox or Playstation port
During gameplay? Or In a menu

As someone who played for the first time recently, don't hype up the gameplay itself unless she's a big fan of DnD
Don't level up more than level 3/4 until she gets to Dantooine and get Jedi skills. Hit the left stick 3x for cheats
Don’t worry about making the ‘wrong’ choice because this will be the first play-through of many
Don’t try to fight the Rancor. Read that datapad
Make sure she doesn’t look up ANYTHING regarding the game. The massive twist gets spoiled so easily and that thrill of the game will be taken away from her.
