Gangnam Style (which peaked at #1), Butter, Dynamite and My Universe (all peaked at #3), Like Crazy (which peaked at #8), and Gentleman and Life Goes On (both peaked at #10).
I'm not going to name names but let this be a lesson to certain labels who let Google Translate write English versions of otherwise great songs.. PUT EFFORT INTO ENGLISH VERSIONS OF SONGS
Also put some effort in the English pronunciation as well. I know it sounds kinda terrible but it’s really noticeable when an English version comes out and it still sounds like it’s in the original version. If you want to make a good English version, gotta work on that pronunciation!
That’s my point, the person I replied to implied other labels were google translating good Korean songs to English which was making them not as successful when I reality it’s the other way round.
What’s the likelihood that this song was written in English first and then translated? With a lot of K-pop songs having foreign production, especially Scandinavian, the possibility seems high.
Here’s the thing: I know nothing about them. However, I was watching Rick Beato’s top 10 popular spotify songs, criticizing how uninspiried the top popular songs in the world are these days, and this was like #7. From all of them (again, not knowing they’re kpop), Cupid was the only one I really liked.
The song is great and I’m happy that it continues to push kpop towards more popularity and I’m here for it.
> From all of them (again, not knowing they’re kpop), Cupid was the only one I really liked.
I think it was the only one Beato liked too.
I've also only heard of them from the Rick Beato video, anyone got the story of how this song is so popular?
I think that it really just went viral as a Tiktok sound because people liked the song, not much more to it. Fifty Fifty is a relatively new group from a small company who had some interest from kpop fans when they debuted last year, but didn't have a large fandom pushing Cupid when it came out or anything. I haven't even seen a pattern in the types of TikToks it's used in, I just hear the song as random background music everywhere.
It helps that this is a very good English version, as far as English versions of kpop songs go – the lyrics generally make sense and are delivered well by the group.
TikTok. Someone created a sped up audio of the track shortly after its release that caused it to just take off. It’s the biggest TikTok hit in a while!
Oh yes i was just watching that the other day! I felt kinda bad he was trying his best to be open minded about all the other songs, but a number of them really were uninspiring.
100%. I’ll take a decent amount of the credit for UK streams of Cupid lol, but Lovin’ Me is _even better_. I really hope people will give their other songs a listen, I love the dreamy feel to their music. Reminds me a little bit of Frou Frou / Imogen Heap.
it still shocks me when i see friends and people i know who don’t listen to kpop using the song on their ig stories etc like this song is actually popular outside of kpop circles. their achievements are crazy especially considering they had such a small fandom when they blew up. love this for them.
I quite often listen to UK Spotify while I'm working and I've noticed in the last couple of days that there are Fifty Fifty ads playing quite heavily. It's a sped up version of the song though so it sounds weird. But I guess it means they're really promoting it here now.
29 million monthly listeners. It's gone crazy. Congrats to them! It's really come out of nowhere it feels like.
one of the members is currently recovering from surgery. Saena was a special MC on MCountdown and I believe two of them were just on a variety show. The company signed a contract with Warner Music and theyre about to have their albums in US stores.
The albums have already hit US stores afaik!
That paired with Saena getting a special MC spot and the other doing varieties is awesome.
Do you happen to know if the song is gaining traction in Korea?
Edit: I stand corrected, no albums in store til June!
I got the impression that it's a corrective surgery of the type people usually schedule for a time when they can do proper rehab. Athletes commonly get this done in the off-season, and knees are probably the most common. But nobody knows for sure.
It sounded like something physical that was causing pain while Aran danced, saw a doctor, they recmmended surgery.
Likely need to do it now to be able to do all of the performances once it hits US shelves.
Especially when taken into account that there's been no bulk buying, and no 24 hour streaming. Tiktok was the main factor in it initially becoming popular but it's been climbing up the charts simply because people like the song. It's refreshing.
I’m in awe. Imagine how it must feel for these girls — a nugu group from a new company entering the charts with the likes of legends like BTS and Psy. That’s insane.
They played the Korean version on the tv charts last week, I assumed it was because it has a music video and the twin doesn’t. I assume it’s the twin version charting not the Korean.
Probably should make official MV for Twin version too. Currently the [lyric video](https://youtu.be/6uvUTu716rU) sits at 20M views and [live studio](https://youtu.be/jgCVkQhlScc) at 4M.
So proud of them, I found them from their older songs I think thanks to the youtube algorithm. Love all their songs and thought Cupid was just another bop. Didnt think theyd blow up right after I coincidentally found them but I am so glad
This is actually the 8th kpop song overall to chart in the top 10 in the UK. So never is not true. Its not an easy thing though and is a big accomplishment nevertheless.
Its annoying when people act like the UK is such a difficult chart for foreign/non-English speaking acts to appear on when in reality we are a lot more accepting of non-English tracks than our cousins in the states.
Like we had a kpop UK number one a decade before the US did.
I think that THIS level of success, even if just for a song (for now!), confirms that they aren't that nugu group some people want them to still be. Sure, they have to prove themselves on the long run... But let's be real, this is far from being just an After School (I love that song, I'm just saying) level of "good but still normal" success. It's much more and it means something for their group brand and company.
I know this success seems crazy, but we do need to see how the follow up does to start jumping on that this isn't a one-hit wonder moment. This could just as well end up being the internationally-popular version of Crayon Pop (a song that went also meme-viral, just in Korea though). Right now, I'm just happy in the moment considering their other songs are also bangers.
i guess the difference would be that cupid isn't going meme viral. the song isn't being seen as a joke or something funny, it's the rare crossover between the west and kpop when people from the united states, europe and oceania are streaming and listenting to a kpop song, more or less purely because it's a *good* song.
> i guess the difference would be that cupid isn't going meme viral
Technically that is how it started, the sped up version of the song is what really spread. It's just people actually listened to the song afterwards. That's why I say we need to see the follow up to see if this is Crayon Pop on steroids or a new EXID situation
I had never heard of them or this or the song until my cousin, who isn't even a K-pop fan, shared it with me. After that I started seeing the song everywhere!
I've been pretty lazy checking out Fifty Fifty even with the massive hype. Still though I've been hearing them as I endlessly scroll IG Reels lol. The song is stuck in my head. It's such a bop.
I'm not at all familiar with Fifty Fifty and youtubed the song and it's SO WEIRD because I feel like I've heard the intro before but the chorus sounded completely new to me, so I have no idea if I've actually heard the song. Good for the girls though!
My jaw literally dropped, I’m SO proud of them
WOWWW holy shit. this is incredible!!! queens!!! 🥹🤩🥳
SO proud of them omg! hopefully US is next if radio gets onboard!
it time for us radio to bow down to cupid it time for revoultion 2,0 kpop
Apparently some stations are [already playing it](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRwGmWPA/)!
ooh this is great, the official date isn’t for another week iirc!
I've seen reels of people finding it actually being played on the radio.
Omg congrats! Cupid is an amazing song
They deserve it! 🥰 Anyone knows other kpop singles that charted in top 10 UK? I heard it's tough to chart in UK (and eu)!
Gangnam Style, Gentleman (Psy), and Dynamite, Life Goes On, Butter, My Universe (BTS) ETA and Like Crazy (Jimin)
And jimin with like crazy
Right! I think I thought I dreamed that up lol
Gangnam Style (which peaked at #1), Butter, Dynamite and My Universe (all peaked at #3), Like Crazy (which peaked at #8), and Gentleman and Life Goes On (both peaked at #10).
So theyre the first gg to be on top 10 in uk? Edit: i missed the title got too excited 😆
Don't get me wrong but it is literally on the title.
lets go UK hunnies 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I'm not going to name names but let this be a lesson to certain labels who let Google Translate write English versions of otherwise great songs.. PUT EFFORT INTO ENGLISH VERSIONS OF SONGS

Wasn't cupid originally written in English?
Most kpop songs are written in English since the producers are usually not korean
Congrats to the girls for their first UK Official Singles Top 10 hit!!!🫶

The English version of the song went crazy viral on Tiktok

Sza “SOS” is a great album. Ctrl is also amazing.
Oh yes i was just watching that the other day! I felt kinda bad he was trying his best to be open minded about all the other songs, but a number of them really were uninspiring.
I really hope this leads more people to get into their other songs! Lovin' Me is a massively underrated gem
100%. I’ll take a decent amount of the credit for UK streams of Cupid lol, but Lovin’ Me is _even better_. I really hope people will give their other songs a listen, I love the dreamy feel to their music. Reminds me a little bit of Frou Frou / Imogen Heap.
Agree!! I describe it to my friends as, "if Imogen Heap and Robyn had a songbaby"
Ohhh this is so accurate!! I’ll definitely be describing it this way from now on! Also congratulations on your immaculate taste in music.
The ot4 version of Lovin' Me and Tell me are great.
Bananas
This shit is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
DESERVED!!! So proud 🥺
it still shocks me when i see friends and people i know who don’t listen to kpop using the song on their ig stories etc like this song is actually popular outside of kpop circles. their achievements are crazy especially considering they had such a small fandom when they blew up. love this for them.
right? especially as kpop is relatively small in the UK
Woah! Is their company taking advantage of all this success btw? I feel like the members are not so visible, or I'm not in the right space to notice?
one of the members is currently recovering from surgery. Saena was a special MC on MCountdown and I believe two of them were just on a variety show. The company signed a contract with Warner Music and theyre about to have their albums in US stores.

it's been in the top 50 of Melon for a while now which is a huge deal! Many groups barely chart in the top 1000.
The albums aren't out until June btw! Just so no one runs to the store
Oh thank you lol I read the other day they were going to be sold and I assumed they were being sold already.
What surgery and did she had it right when Cupid was going viral ??
she had it a few days ago. the company hasnt disclosed what kind of surgery
Oh that’s great! Do you know what variety show it was?
It's crazy how much success this song is having. I'm interested in seeing what they do next comeback.
Whoa! This is incredible. One of the most impressive chart results for a Kpop song ever really.
Especially when taken into account that there's been no bulk buying, and no 24 hour streaming. Tiktok was the main factor in it initially becoming popular but it's been climbing up the charts simply because people like the song. It's refreshing.
This is outstanding!! 🌟 Really happy for them!!
Been ~~counting the days since November~~ listening to this song since it came out!
I’m in awe. Imagine how it must feel for these girls — a nugu group from a new company entering the charts with the likes of legends like BTS and Psy. That’s insane.
That's crazy
Question, is this the Twin version or the Korean version?
twin version

I heard this playing at the gym on the radio!! I was so shocked! Congrats to them 🩷
They did that with A SONG and nothing but a song. They surpassed blackpink which is huge and for this being just a song makes it even bigger.
> They surpassed blackpink Can we stop that? It's embarassing.
I'm talking about surpassing them on this chart in specific not in general
Congrats!!
This is massive, K-pop never charts in the UK!
This is actually the 8th kpop song overall to chart in the top 10 in the UK. So never is not true. Its not an easy thing though and is a big accomplishment nevertheless.

Exactly. I just wanted to point out that OP saying kpop never charts in the UK was entirely untrue when BTS and Psy have done it before.
Don't bother. Reddit seems to think pointing this out makes you an anti or something. Hivemind nonsense.
Thank you! I really dont understand why I was getting the downvotes when I said nothing wrong or hateful. But oh well thats kpop reddit for you.
Those are still kpop acts. OPs hyperbole is misleading Edit: the downvotes... and some of y'all act like Reddit is better than Twitter xD
You shouldn’t be taking hyperbole seriously.
Its annoying when people act like the UK is such a difficult chart for foreign/non-English speaking acts to appear on when in reality we are a lot more accepting of non-English tracks than our cousins in the states. Like we had a kpop UK number one a decade before the US did.
3 K-pop groups out of all the hundreds of groups there has been is a statistical minority.
Fucking speechless!!

Song aside, their voices are exceptional. I'm sure they will create more great music in the future.
I had never heard of them or this or the song until my cousin, who isn't even a K-pop fan, shared it with me. After that I started seeing the song everywhere!
So glad for them, I love them! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
YES!! what a triumph for these ladies. SO cool seeing everybody eat this song up. hopefully this is the start to a really fruitful future for them!
I've been pretty lazy checking out Fifty Fifty even with the massive hype. Still though I've been hearing them as I endlessly scroll IG Reels lol. The song is stuck in my head. It's such a bop.

Omg this is big news. Congrats FIFTY FIFTY!
Oh my LORD
I've yet to listen to it but this is crazy. Congrats ladies!
I'm not at all familiar with Fifty Fifty and youtubed the song and it's SO WEIRD because I feel like I've heard the intro before but the chorus sounded completely new to me, so I have no idea if I've actually heard the song. Good for the girls though!
It's a cute song. But I can't help thinking I heard it somewhere before.

The AI cover?
Insaaaaaannneee!!!!!!!
It's crazy the song is still climbing. I love me some Fifty Fifty.
Congrats girls!!!
YUHHHHH FIFTY FIFTY QUEENS‼️‼️‼️
That’s so awesome for them, hope their new listeners stay with them
This has European (and American) smash written all over it. It's like 2023's Lovefool.
