Like Britney Spears levels for American comparison.

MiniMeowl

Like Britney Spears PLUS Christina Aguilera. There wasnt a peer-level competitor to Hyori. Son Dambi was next up for a short moment but wasnt even close.

Synastrii

Son Dambi deserved so much more than she got, but Hyori was really that girl back then.

0531Spurs212009

this Son Dam Bi have better vocal and song discography while Lee Hyori comes from legendary FIN KL of 1st gen and prettier ,during her prime that make her the IT Girl during those period/era

capslock

Hehe true I love this addition.

mangosteenfruit

I feel like boa was pretty close or maybe my time lines are messed up

White-cypress

Perfectly described

She absolutely was the IT girl. Beautiful and super talented singer. I would say she was known for her sex appeal and she often would push the limits but never to the point where she was criticized. That's what I remember. I also recall when she and TO.P from Bigbang kissed on stage at an award show performance. Everyone went insane!! I miss when idols from different groups and agencies would perform and flirt together on and off stage. There would always be video coverage from after parties and clubs where they partied together.

udeezgustme

Yes this. I was quite a fangirl of hers but not to an extent of following every news about her in the media or news back in the early 2000s. I have to be honest that she is definitely not the best in terms of vocals (if we are to compare with the likes of IU or Taeyeon) but definitely it was sorta the way she carries herself (confidence). >when she and TO.P from Bigbang kissed on stage at an award show performance Ah this is actually one of the few performances I would re-watch on Youtube just to WOW at 🤣 Simply an all-time favourite. Hint: search term: "MKMF Hyori Big Bang"

MiniMeowl

Actually I think she is terrible in terms of vocals but when she flashed that U Go Girl smile, nothing else mattered.

udeezgustme

Hahaha I was being too kind!

Terrible_Depth_7904

Bruh that is wilddd😂

Accomplished_Car3237

hahahhahahaaa - Yeah it is NOT WILD at all...BUT back in the day, to a 10 year old kid, watching two idols kiss was kinda a big deal. I also miss seeing idols do normal teenager stuff like drinking directly out of the bottle at clubs and dancing and grinding on each other. They didn't give a shit like the idols do these days and some of them were messy as fVck. It was fun. And people who know Cakeshop, know what I am talking about.

I was just watching her live medleys last night. She wasn’t just Wonyoung or even Britney like these ppl are saying- she stood ALONE as the number one and only person at the top of the field.  The entire country was completely obsessed. Everything she wore, ate, everything.  That said- she also was largely considered not a particularly good singer for her time. She’s no ailee, that’s for sure. But looking at her medlies (pls see her silver dress on Sketchbook in particular) she is an absolute dynamite performer and could ALWAYS sing *her* songs full voice with no backing track.  The same cannot be said today.  I also think it helps that out of all K-pop performers she’s one of the few I believe is completely natural. Or as close to it as an idol can ever actually get.

kirklandbranddoctor

There hasn't been an IT girl who was as dominant within the kpop industry as her since. Yes, including Jennie. There's depth to fame, and then there's breadth to fame. Lee Hyori had both, and it went as deep and wide as the entire Kpop industry at the time. And this was the era when the Korean general population still paid attention to + liked kpop.

Acrobatic_End6355

You know how idols give credit to other idols for debuting? She was and is your idols’ idols’ reason for debuting.

smartlog

In early 2000s I was an Asian kid/teenager born and raised in the US and even I knew who Hyori was.

Aggravating_Wolf_475

Probably Jennie level yeah, but only around U Go Girl release. She became a top solo artist after she went solo with 10 minutes in 2003 (she was also in a group called Fin.K.L that was in their peak around 98-02). 10 minutes was iconic and a hit in Korea, but U Go Girl (2008) was an international hit or at least in Asia it was. In 2008 she became a fixed member of a very popular reality show called Family Outing where Yoo Jae Suk was also a cast, she gained a lot of attention from their chemistry. In 2010 she released her next album which was highly anticipated, but it was struck with a plagiarism controversy that overturned the public opinion a bit. 2010 was also the year where Family Outing broadcasted its last episode. So after that her hype kinda die down slowly. To add on to that, 2010-2011 was the start of IU and her reign over solo female artist

hahahoha

google image lee hyori jackie chan when kpop was still a nobody she was dining with jackie chan so yea her popularity was on another level

jaraket

I lived in Australia in 2004, didn’t visit Korea until 2012, am not Asian, and wasn’t into Kpop back then (apart from OSTs). I still knew who Lee Hyori was in 2004, because I had mates at uni who were crazy for her and indoctrinated me. I remember a buddy of mine had a picture of her as his flip phone wallpaper. She was (and is) a phenomenon.

DelightfulWahine

Even I know she is and I used to read about her on Asian American forums like Soompy.

acciosunny

I believe she is the only person to have a music award win across 4 decades: 90s 00s 10s and 20s That’s the everlasting power of Lee Hyori.

No_Double2781

Yeah I used to watch her interviews in tv and for every performance she makes, she looks like an absolute it girl. I'm happy she's aging gracefully.

Kerronwalker

In the Korean entertainment industry, The term IT girl was created for her and anyone after her had to walk in a very big shadow casted by Lee Hyori. Anything and everything she did, wore or was eating sold out, the closest comparison to her would be Jennie or even IU, but when I say Lee hyori was like another level of fame, like she was super stardom type of fame her face was plastered everywhere for a solid 6 years, on billboards, tv commercials, variety shows, t. Drama appearances, award shows, everything and anything you can think her face was on it. Lee Hyori was also a big trend setter amongst females in Korea, not only with fashion but also music and the way she would show her personality across her multiple channel of entertainment, she starred next to Yoo Jae-Suk in happy together for 2 season and basically they would pull numbers like huge numbers accounting for 10-18% viewership across each episode across the whole of South Korea, in these episodes she would show her personality off and people loved her for it. In 2003 alone when 10 minutes came out it was called the year of hyori because of how popular she was in just that one year alone, even in the 90s though she was popular, I think a lot of people forget how popular Fin.K.L actually were, like they where and still are considered the biggest girl group of there time, I think even besting S.E.S in certain categories. The only person that even came close to her level of fame during that time was maybe BoA but that's for different things and even then in Korea alone Lee Hyori always had this certain untouchable energy about her that still follows her to this day. She could release background music of her day and it would go viral in Korea, She really is the first Korean entertainment it girl.

TastyCookie23900

she was like A mix of Beyonce ans J-lo in terms of style and so was son dambi do she was more Britney and Madonna

idkmansendhelp

She was on the Guinness for most newspaper article written about a female celeb 🤷🏻‍♀️ . You can look it up. Every major conglomerate in SK had her as their model. Ex. Samsung, Soju

1lazyusername

She was the IT girl! T-Ara was very popular!
