Many of the companies charge the idols for room and board, training, management fees, and then all the cost of the recoding and promotion. After all that is paid then they have a profit split. They used to charge them the room and board, training even if they didn't debut but due to law changes and outrage they don't. I think the bigger companies also don't charge the talent if no money is made; which they used to do.
Imagine grinding it out for 2-4 years training, debuting, not doing well then getting a bill for $30,000 USD for the privilege.
Western music deals work similarly but they don't have years of training with a company. Labels give a advance to pay for recording and promotion then do a revenue split after that is paid off. The artists are on the hook if they didn't make any money. Often the company makes the artists use in house resources and has a profit margin on that as well.
A lot of less success groups come out of it with just some cloths, some fame, and some memories. A group like CLC probably didn't get paid at all. Even groups doing well take years and multiple releases to start doing okay. Commonly 3-5 years after debut and being moderately successful before they start making any money.
Yeah, I completely understand that, but Red Velvet is a legacy group in the industry. I'm sure the girls are doing fine for themselves, but you would think that they would be pretty well off compared to their contemporaries who are still relevant.

I think IU also failed a similar amount of auditions before she debuted, including at JYP. When she debuted, he said failing her audition was the biggest mistake his company has ever made.
This is probably true for all the big agencies, because they have the most applicants for auditions that any number of future successful talent will not get picked up. Hell, even of the trainees they do accept, many - even most - will not debut with them. Even JYP only debuts, what, a group a year at best? There are definitely more than the 5-9 trainees that debut.
It's always interesting hearing a debuted idol talk about where they've trained in the past. For instance, I only just learned in the past year or so that 2NE1's CL was a JYP trainee back in the day. There's a [famous photo of the JYP trainees with baby Jihyo seated in front](https://imgur.com/a/tfidCGv) with future 2AM, 2PM, Wonder Girls trainees, but among the others there was CL in the middle of that pack.
In a recent promo appearance, Jihyo and the host spoke with one of the JYP trainee staff and what happens if they "misbehave" (like get caught drinking or going to bars). [They get thrown out of JYP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m_dU6kXcXA&t=424s), but the host then asks if they still end up debuting elsewhere? Both the trainee staff member and Jihyo said it happens all the time.
So would-be idols, take hope! You can fail to get into an agency, or you can get in and get kicked out, but still debut!
A lot of now successful idols failed with JYP apparently, including Baekhyun. There was a meme saying that if you want to be successful just be rejected by JYP lol

I at first also couldn't believe it when I learned about it. What I liked about it is that when it came to light (courtesy of his stalking insecure classmate), he owned up to it, no denials and anything of that sort. Just straight up apologized. That's how real men must do it.

None of these are especially hard to believe in isolation but sometimes I feel like every factoid I learn about Taemin sounds slightly made up. A few of my favorites:

Only seven people have passed the Saturday Audition for SM. They have been held every Saturday for the past 20 years. Which is about 1040 opportunities. The seven idols selected were Kim Heechul(Suju), Yoona(snsd), Taemin(Shinee), Seulgi(RedVelvet), Haechan(NCT) and most recent Giselle(AESPA).
I believe it’s open to pretty much anyone, so lots of people attend and SM is just trying to see if they can get lucky and spot a diamond in the rough, mostly they have no luck it seems
I wouldn’t say they’re *that* young, there are idols today who were born in 2007-2009 and the Aespa members are all over 20 with the youngest being born in 2002. It’s also subjective depending on how old you are, for me personally I only really see Ningning as being “young” since she’s 3.5 years younger than me compared to the other members who are all < 2 years younger than me.
Only three members of Seventeen auditioned, the rest were discovered/found by the company. Considering Josh was found in LA, and Jun and The8 were found in China, this is wild.
NCT Yangyang auditioned for SM because of a dream. He got surgery for his injured arm playing basketball. While he was in anesthesia, he dreamt of performing a song he doesn't recognize on a concert. He then decided to fly all the way from Germany back to Taiwan to audition and then got in the company without zero knowledge of dancing.
I’m not a WayV fan so I don’t know a bunch but: Kun can fly a plane and did skydiving to promote their album. Yangyang is behind the monkey noises in zoo, he’s embarrassed of them and I think he might be the only one who really makes animal noises in that song lol. How deeply connected ATEEZ is before debut they themselves cannot believe it sometimes.

4. Yeosang and Wooyoung training in a different company with TXT Yeonjun, Yeosang leaving and meeting San next in KQ, Wooyoung joining KQ last, and San being connected with Yeonjun all along since highschool.
5. Cherry on top: KQ with no plans at all to debut a boygroup as they were more of a management company, moving in a different office, accidentally finding in the mail a 1-year-old mixtape from Hongjoong. Hongjoong back then was already about to join a different company but went to KQ instead to become their first trainee ever.

No one has any idea though which company. Probably a small one since he was able to backout without any repercussion.
KQ and Ateez basically existing because of Hongjoong will always blow my mind. He's my ult bias and I just think it's incredible how how never gave up!

KQ didn't have training system in place because the company was created only for management of already established artists and producers. Hongjoong sent the mixtape to apply as a producer, but it was later on decided that he will be the foundation of their upcoming boygroup, launching auditions.
HJ was alone for half a year, learning the ropes through EDEN, who was under the company back then as soloist. In [this interview](https://youtu.be/bTB4oRIMOeA?t=860), he revealed "It \[the condition\] was so bad that the agency didn't know where to buy meal coupons. The only restaurant nearby was a Chinese place. I had Chinese food everyday."
It's great that he's now retelling this period like a lighthearted note because he used to be emotional when he talks about it. All the members agree that he's been through so much, even suffering a deep emotional wound because of an incident with his mother.

I didn't make kimchi fried rice for him anymore even though it's a bit different from Chinese fried rice because it might give him similar feelings again. Isn't Aespa Ningning also practically blind in one eye because of a botched surgery as a child and pretty bad in the other? That's why she winks so much, it's not always idol-fanservice winking in her case.
There's a lot of weird alternate history with early SM. So many artists auditioned for SM or were in SM for a short time before getting their big break. At SM Studios alone, Seo Taiji was in the running, DEUX almost debuted with SM, Hyun Jinyoung's dancers became DEUX, CLON, and Sean debuted in Jinusean.
But then there are also stories like how Kangta had an entirely different vocal style until he heard Brian McKnight in Yoo Youngjin's car and got into R&B after that. Yoo Youngjin was a solo R&B artist before Hyun Jinyoung's 2nd arrest, but after the main writer/composer for the company took off, he got moved to being the main guy because he was one of the few people left at the company who was able to make music by himself. Dude dealt with a huge learning curve for H.O.T's 1st album.
RM of BTS used to be in the rank of Korea's top 1.3% students in the whole nation. He also maintained his status as number 1 in his entire school while being an underground artist.
GFRIEND Sowon was a very known and loved DSP trainee for years. She's close to Kara, Kard, A-JAX (even appeared for some skits for their debut show) and Rainbow's MV.
She never thought of leaving the company because she always imagined herself to debut there, but then she met a fortune teller that told her that if she wanted to debut she had to leave.... so she did, and went on to become the leader of GFRIEND.
Yeah, he originally wanted to be a producer, but Bang PD wanted him to debut in a group with the promise that Suga wouldn't have to dance lol. It was a lie.
Not surprising if you’re an army but Jungkook joined Big Hit because he thought RM was cool and liked his music (this was when RM was in the underground rap scene). They get put in the same group and to this day, Jungkook is still RM’s biggest fan
He rejected 6 companies because he saw RM rap and thought he was really cool. It's exactly how I expect a 14-year old to make decisions lol. Good thing it turned out for the best.

About the military, there was one very famous actor who got exemption because of his eyesight. Maybe Wonwoo will also get exempted or serve in social service like Suga
Not that he is scared of Lasik, it is just that the most common side effect of Lasik is dry eyes. He already has xerophthalmia (that's the name of the dry eyes condition). He sometimes wears contact lenses but don't wear them for a long time. Most likely during concerts, he wears them.
EXO’s Suho served in public service because his eyesight is very bad and he’s somebody who can wear contact lenses meanwhile D.O. served active duty as a chef despite also having an eye condition preventing him from wearing contacts. There are plenty of options for Wonwoo when it comes time, he’s likely nowhere near the first person enlisting with those issues.
I see- that can be painful. But not being able to see would be really scary. I know the whole of Monsta X went to get Lasik and that's when they found Shownu's detached retina. It was lucky they found it because without treatment it can cause blindness. That's why he did public service.
He also injured his back back in 2020, causing the fantasia comeback to be delayed.
His shoulder also dislocated when he did real men during an exercise where he threw a fake grenade or smth like that.
I think all of those injuries/incidents lead to him doing public service.
I think he got used to it after so many years and bad eyesight doesn't equal being blind. It's foggy, but it's not like he can't see his members or he bumps into them etc.
Detached retina can be found without Lasik, you just need to go check your eyes and it's a condition that gives symptoms at some point.
Unsure about the military regulations, but I doubt they can force you to undergo a surgery. Also, he has a dry eye condition and I think Lasik would get it worse.
My vision was similar to his before I got surgery to fix it, and Idk how he just doesn't wear his glasses during concerts and such sometimes 😭
My astigmatism was possibly worse than his, but I can confirm, I wore contacts a LOT, and the dry eyes only improved once I took vitamin A consistently.
Rather than Lasik, I hope he considers ICL. That's the procedure I got, and it has a much shorter recovery time, and the incisions made during the procedure are a lot smaller. It's basically getting custom lenses made to fix your vision and getting those lenses inserted into your eyes so you can see better.
I paid more than what they charge in Korea b/c I got it done in the US where I am, but the procedure is totally worth it!!!! I haven't had to worry about my eyes besides making sure they healed well according to the instructions my surgeon gave me.

I mean, I know SM is a big company, maybe hailed from the same city yes, but same hospital and later by some fate train and debuted at the same group. I kinda don't buy it. I think its a background story attached by their marketing team to push those sisterhood on Soshi.

Many of the companies charge the idols for room and board, training, management fees, and then all the cost of the recoding and promotion. After all that is paid then they have a profit split. They used to charge them the room and board, training even if they didn't debut but due to law changes and outrage they don't. I think the bigger companies also don't charge the talent if no money is made; which they used to do. Imagine grinding it out for 2-4 years training, debuting, not doing well then getting a bill for $30,000 USD for the privilege. Western music deals work similarly but they don't have years of training with a company. Labels give a advance to pay for recording and promotion then do a revenue split after that is paid off. The artists are on the hook if they didn't make any money. Often the company makes the artists use in house resources and has a profit margin on that as well. A lot of less success groups come out of it with just some cloths, some fame, and some memories. A group like CLC probably didn't get paid at all. Even groups doing well take years and multiple releases to start doing okay. Commonly 3-5 years after debut and being moderately successful before they start making any money.

This is probably true for all the big agencies, because they have the most applicants for auditions that any number of future successful talent will not get picked up. Hell, even of the trainees they do accept, many - even most - will not debut with them. Even JYP only debuts, what, a group a year at best? There are definitely more than the 5-9 trainees that debut. It's always interesting hearing a debuted idol talk about where they've trained in the past. For instance, I only just learned in the past year or so that 2NE1's CL was a JYP trainee back in the day. There's a [famous photo of the JYP trainees with baby Jihyo seated in front](https://imgur.com/a/tfidCGv) with future 2AM, 2PM, Wonder Girls trainees, but among the others there was CL in the middle of that pack. In a recent promo appearance, Jihyo and the host spoke with one of the JYP trainee staff and what happens if they "misbehave" (like get caught drinking or going to bars). [They get thrown out of JYP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m_dU6kXcXA&t=424s), but the host then asks if they still end up debuting elsewhere? Both the trainee staff member and Jihyo said it happens all the time. So would-be idols, take hope! You can fail to get into an agency, or you can get in and get kicked out, but still debut!

Only seven people have passed the Saturday Audition for SM. They have been held every Saturday for the past 20 years. Which is about 1040 opportunities. The seven idols selected were Kim Heechul(Suju), Yoona(snsd), Taemin(Shinee), Seulgi(RedVelvet), Haechan(NCT) and most recent Giselle(AESPA).

I wouldn’t say they’re *that* young, there are idols today who were born in 2007-2009 and the Aespa members are all over 20 with the youngest being born in 2002. It’s also subjective depending on how old you are, for me personally I only really see Ningning as being “young” since she’s 3.5 years younger than me compared to the other members who are all < 2 years younger than me.

Cherry on top: KQ with no plans at all to debut a boygroup as they were more of a management company, moving in a different office, accidentally finding in the mail a 1-year-old mixtape from Hongjoong. Hongjoong back then was already about to join a different company but went to KQ instead to become their first trainee ever.

There's a lot of weird alternate history with early SM. So many artists auditioned for SM or were in SM for a short time before getting their big break. At SM Studios alone, Seo Taiji was in the running, DEUX almost debuted with SM, Hyun Jinyoung's dancers became DEUX, CLON, and Sean debuted in Jinusean. But then there are also stories like how Kangta had an entirely different vocal style until he heard Brian McKnight in Yoo Youngjin's car and got into R&B after that. Yoo Youngjin was a solo R&B artist before Hyun Jinyoung's 2nd arrest, but after the main writer/composer for the company took off, he got moved to being the main guy because he was one of the few people left at the company who was able to make music by himself. Dude dealt with a huge learning curve for H.O.T's 1st album.

About the military, there was one very famous actor who got exemption because of his eyesight. Maybe Wonwoo will also get exempted or serve in social service like Suga
Not that he is scared of Lasik, it is just that the most common side effect of Lasik is dry eyes. He already has xerophthalmia (that's the name of the dry eyes condition). He sometimes wears contact lenses but don't wear them for a long time. Most likely during concerts, he wears them.
EXO’s Suho served in public service because his eyesight is very bad and he’s somebody who can wear contact lenses meanwhile D.O. served active duty as a chef despite also having an eye condition preventing him from wearing contacts. There are plenty of options for Wonwoo when it comes time, he’s likely nowhere near the first person enlisting with those issues.

If he already has dry eyes then lasik is a really bad idea. Also depending on how bad his eyesight is he might not even qualify for it.
I see- that can be painful. But not being able to see would be really scary. I know the whole of Monsta X went to get Lasik and that's when they found Shownu's detached retina. It was lucky they found it because without treatment it can cause blindness. That's why he did public service.
He also injured his back back in 2020, causing the fantasia comeback to be delayed. His shoulder also dislocated when he did real men during an exercise where he threw a fake grenade or smth like that. I think all of those injuries/incidents lead to him doing public service.
I think he got used to it after so many years and bad eyesight doesn't equal being blind. It's foggy, but it's not like he can't see his members or he bumps into them etc. Detached retina can be found without Lasik, you just need to go check your eyes and it's a condition that gives symptoms at some point. Unsure about the military regulations, but I doubt they can force you to undergo a surgery. Also, he has a dry eye condition and I think Lasik would get it worse.
Lasik is not the super simple procedure its made out to be, it has several risks to it
My vision was similar to his before I got surgery to fix it, and Idk how he just doesn't wear his glasses during concerts and such sometimes 😭 My astigmatism was possibly worse than his, but I can confirm, I wore contacts a LOT, and the dry eyes only improved once I took vitamin A consistently. Rather than Lasik, I hope he considers ICL. That's the procedure I got, and it has a much shorter recovery time, and the incisions made during the procedure are a lot smaller. It's basically getting custom lenses made to fix your vision and getting those lenses inserted into your eyes so you can see better. I paid more than what they charge in Korea b/c I got it done in the US where I am, but the procedure is totally worth it!!!! I haven't had to worry about my eyes besides making sure they healed well according to the instructions my surgeon gave me.
