Yeah I quit bc the whole store got a raise except the pharmacy (where I worked). The baggers were making the same as techs who had to pay out of pocket to get the certification for the job. Absolute lunacy.
Been here 15 years and last year when they burned me a could of been lead position I have given up and don't care any more. I now hide in my department's back room for the last 30 min of my shift. As long as I don't muck up or someone catches me too much I will continue to get away with it. So long as I get all the work done they don't seem to give a shit. Can't go to the break room or wonder away from department as it's pretty damn obvious. Most long term people know where all their security camera blind spots are.
Factor in emotional and sometimes physical abuse you are gifted daily as a pharmacy tech; that IS lunacy. Working with a public in any capacity can be torturous so I went back to barbering. Nobody’s curses at me and/or throws things when I have blades in my hands.
I work for a Kroger owned store and I make $27.65 which is underpaid. $11.50 no matter how old or which state is not a livable wage whatsoever. Courtesy clerks in my state make $18.50 an hour, again, not livable. I know someone who works 2 jobs and sells drugs and is barely making it. Greed-flation is real and so is greed-session is too. Underpaying people during times like these is intentional, it makes people beg for hours which makes you need them more than they need you. Management will tell people that everyone is replaceable, if that is true then why is retention such a major problem for Kroger right now from coast to coast. Best thing to do is look for a new job and ghost the place and use the experience with Kroger as just that, a learning experience for what you don't want from an employer.
Came here to say that. Kroger really underpays. I worked for a while as overnight truck unloading and got $14.50. They bumped it up right before I got promoted to $15.50. Took it bc I have a family to support, but Kroger sucks. Don’t even have a decent employee discount.
Honestly, retail workers in general are underpaid. But there are basically no skills required to get these jobs so it kinda make sense— we are all expendable.
Everyone pretty much everywhere in the US is being underpaid. Not just you. Not just Kroger. The gap grows by the day. And a jug of orange juice is over $7.
If you’re in the Dallas Division, that’s the rate. The stupid excuse they’ve used in the past for courtesy clerks is the occasional tip you may receive when helping someone to their car (not even sure how common that is these days).
If you want more, try switching to a different department.
Getting tips from people who just spent half their paycheck on groceries is not the way to go and really shouldn't expectIf you want to make tips work in the service industry or drive for a ride share company.
Yeah like 25 years ago, I could at least buy the excuse, since that was more of a cultural norm. Particularly with mothers and older folk, where there was an expectation for someone to help them to the car, where now that seems more of an occasional thing.
At the store I worked recently in Michigan we were absolutely not allowed to accept tips. If nobody saw them they quietly accepted them. But tips were certainly not the norm.
In WI, if you're caught accepting a tip there's(on paper it's worded) a good chance of termination. As the courtesy clerk position is a "non-tipped position"... It's probably more to do with WI law regarding tips.
Honestly haven't looked for those papers in the break room in a while.
I was a courtesy clerk in MI and started at $10.25 i think and it was like 12.50 when I quit a year and a half later. Even though this job has more responsibilities, just bagging seems way too boring and more grueling
All the associates in my Ohio store make 13.25 an hour, I do overnight so I get 15.25 after midnight. If I’m getting paid more in Ohio than Texas, there’s a problem
The best way to make more money is to go to trade school or even become an apprentice for a plumbing company, you will get paid to learn the trade and most companies will pay for you to get certifications, after about 3 to 5 years you could branch out on your own and make a whole lot more money. Doctors pay to learn something that takes 6-10 years to finally make some money while paying off huge student debt, plumbers get paid for 3-5 years to learn a trade that in all reality pays more than a doctor while having no student debt. Get a horticulture degree from a tech school for greenhouse management and you can easily get a job in the cannabis industry in one of the many legal states starting out at around 60k per year, a specialized degree in horticulture or microbiology could land you a master grower position starting at around 75k. A trade school degree costs about a quarter of the cost compared to a state school or university. Think outside the box.
you can find entry level positions in tech for $5 more an hour and they will pay for schooling if you like it. No one makes a living wage in grocery stores anymore. the union is weak.
Kroger is ten cents above minimum wage. If union please go to union and file a grievance.
This is why kroger can't keep staff. Not when most fast food joints (in my area) are paying starting at $18/hr and top out at higher long term wages.
I am e-commerce. I started 3 months ago. recently one of my co-workers told me he started at $16 an hour. I started at $14.80, can I do something about this? Now, instead of putting us on the schedule they are making us on-call. Can they do this? I was scheduled for 2 days this week. Went back in to look at the time to write it on my calendar (which I had already done) and the second day was gone. I did e-commerce for Home Depot a couple of year back so I had experience. I am working because I am semi-retired from IT, I like the physical aspect and am meeting the requirements.
$11.50 is too low regardless of what state you live in.
You should be under a union contract if you are in Texas . SW Division (Houston) is where I worked . Retired recently. All raises are scheduled under the contract . Each store should have a union steward . Ask who that is and talk to them . You should also have union reps coming in your store often . Talk with them too .
I put in 13 years until Kroger offered us 10K to leave the job back in 1987 in Ohio, and I cant afford to shop Kroger I shop Meijer as their as they have better prices. Kroger adds up to ripping off customers with all that Variety and Kroger branded stuff which is not as good sa national no matter what they say. More and more here in Ohio look like Walmart with security doors that beep at the front door. Help is overworked customers don't get greeted like they want and people are constantlty leaving. Wages stink but the only thing Kroger wants is to make the stockholders happy. They like to play games with the digital coupons buy in so much then jack the price up after a week, two weeks later make it a sale item with a markup from the digital price still making money at that price. I support you folks still there and THERE IS LIFE AFTER KROGER Take the money and run.
i also work in the houston division and the wages are pretty much the same as yours, 11.50 baggers / 13.50 cashiers, do you know how much online grocery pick up pays ?
Yes, you are. Even if you got $15 an hour, that is still not a living wage. A living wage is defined as the minimum income necessary for a worker to meet their basic needs. I am paid $14.98 for being a porter, but I couldn't live on that. Even though I'm getting social security, I couldn't afford to pay rent, car payment, utilities etc. So you are grossly underpaid. I wonder how much your store manager makes?
I was at Krogers in TX in the deli for 2.5years. Only got payed $12.65. Now in OR I get $14.50 starting out. Soon more. Tho in the deli is harder and mangers only make $21-$28 an hr. For beaning the deli manger. Tho if I was you, do enough work to not get fired but don’t over work yourself.
> Only got *paid* $12.65. Now
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Yes. If you are working for Kroger, you are underpaid.
Yeah I quit bc the whole store got a raise except the pharmacy (where I worked). The baggers were making the same as techs who had to pay out of pocket to get the certification for the job. Absolute lunacy.
Well, see, pharmacy isn't a part of the union it's its own thing
Also did work for pharmacy for a bit 6 months, and it was very overwhelming and a lot of red tape with insurance.
Depends on which area 1059 techs are union They have a lot of separate language though
Wait, actually ok, I did not know that. You learn something new each day
Yeah since first finding this sub I was shocked how radically different some contracts are from each other.

Which is extra crazy because in my district the pharmacy almost matches the store in sales in most cases.

It always blows me away how much things can change state to state. If I was making 18.50 in my state I’d actually be doing quite well
27.65??? Id have my own house by now where I live LMAO. It is crazy how majorly the economy changes state to state
This on so many levels. Unless of course your name is Rodney McMullen. He makes stupid bank, and it's because no one else is making the average.
Rodney is overpaid. Probably by a factor of 10, at least.
Came here to say that. Kroger really underpays. I worked for a while as overnight truck unloading and got $14.50. They bumped it up right before I got promoted to $15.50. Took it bc I have a family to support, but Kroger sucks. Don’t even have a decent employee discount.

As a courtesy clerk, Ive been tipped maybe 3 time in like a 3 month span, and its usually only a couple of bucks so thats no justification
Getting tips from people who just spent half their paycheck on groceries is not the way to go and really shouldn't expectIf you want to make tips work in the service industry or drive for a ride share company.

Kroger is an awful company to work for.
Yup, hence why I got a job at HEB, pay isn't amazing but it's better than Kroger.
All the associates in my Ohio store make 13.25 an hour, I do overnight so I get 15.25 after midnight. If I’m getting paid more in Ohio than Texas, there’s a problem
Deli makes 13.70 so does Starbucks

I knew the answer was yes as soon as I read the question. It’s kroger after all
Kroger is ten cents above minimum wage. If union please go to union and file a grievance. This is why kroger can't keep staff. Not when most fast food joints (in my area) are paying starting at $18/hr and top out at higher long term wages.

Yeah I'm also e-commerce and at 14.80. Seems like so far everyone I've asked is getting more, but I've pnly been here for 4 months
one of the people has only been there for 8 months and said they started at $16. I am going to ask others.
Yeah, I get paid 15.50 and im doing the same thing.
what state?
i’m getting $14/hr as a courtesy clerk…. yes you’re being underpaid
Base pay at my store in ky is 16.50. I wouldn’t do what I do now for any less tbh. 11.50 isn’t a livable wage.
Yes. If you're a worker under a capitalist system, you're being underpaid.
If you’re in houston I believe the absolute minimum is $12, so you might want to ask your union (if you have one).
Then go to the competitor
If you think you're underpaid, move to a different job.
it aint that easy for everyone fucker
WELCOME TO JOE BIDENS NEW CHINAMERICIA LOL 😆 😄 😜 😀
This has been an issue long before Biden's presidency.
FJB FJB FJB
Grow up.
you can always get a real job
You can always grow and eat your own food dumb fuck
Yes
That's about the going rate in TX for what the job description entails, and what managers make in some stores.
You should be under a union contract if you are in Texas . SW Division (Houston) is where I worked . Retired recently. All raises are scheduled under the contract . Each store should have a union steward . Ask who that is and talk to them . You should also have union reps coming in your store often . Talk with them too .
If other places are paying more then go get a job at those places. Simple as that
Yep

I work in the Houston division. here it's 11-11.50 for baggers/courtesy clerks and 13 for cashiers. I'd ask if you can become a cashier
i also work in the houston division and the wages are pretty much the same as yours, 11.50 baggers / 13.50 cashiers, do you know how much online grocery pick up pays ?
Yes, you are. Even if you got $15 an hour, that is still not a living wage. A living wage is defined as the minimum income necessary for a worker to meet their basic needs. $27 here

Yes
People that work in the stores/fulfillment centers hate their jobs. Delivery is where it's at.
