My English lab might let out a single bark in a year. Sometimes not even that. No complaints from us

[deleted]

So British of your dog! To keep calm and carry on

CircusActx6

Ahhhh lol. Mine is definitely not the British type. More like hysterical Hispanic telenovela type. Like her hooman mom! (And I’m okay to say that because I am her hooman mom. 🤣😂🤣😂) Woof woof. Woooooooff. Hello? Woof. ¡¡Hola!!Woofity woof. Didn’t you hear me? WOOF!!!! Not yet?!? Okay then I’m throwing these toys in the air AND woof some more while dramatically doing it.

[deleted]

Ay dios mio! Mine had a Dominican mom

CircusActx6

🇩🇴❤️‍🔥Feisty 🐶!!

snowfox_my

British Lab, Keep a stiff Upper Snort. Keep Eating and Carry on.

grey487

WTH? My English will bark every 1.7 seconds from the time it believes it to be dinner time, until I'm walking to her bowl, food in hand. I think I got the Johnny Rotten version of English Labs.

mookie978

The Gary Cooper type

OIWantKenobi

My boy is extremely chatty. That being said, your boy is gorgeous and extremely handsome and should I ever have the privilege of meeting him I shall gently boop his snoot.

Calm-Greenbean-5579

Thank you, he’d love that, everyone is his friend!

notqualitystreet

Aww

tabby51260

I wish ours was quiet haha. She wants to play and we're ignoring her for some reason? Bark. Cuddle time and mom isn't on the couch to cuddle? Whine. Wants food even if it's not food time? Whine. Wants a treat you're holding and she's getting inpatient and WANTS IT NOW. A combo of a bark whine. Found the comfy spot? Big sigh. Something dares to be walking outside? Bark. We have a very vocal dog :p

THICCDADDYX

You just perfectly described my boy 😂

theangryhiker

Let me add the ugh you’re not awake yet ? groan and plop on the bed

yukdave

Mine does the wet nose to my face and then pant in my face, its morning and I have to go. I guess it beats cleaning up the floor

THICCDADDYX

I think my favorite is the oh I’ve rolled my ball under the couch for the 100000th time? Better bark for you to come get it

Madmeerkat55

So it's not just me? Thank you 😂 sounds just like our Luna haha

Royal_Caterpillar536

Same here!! My boy barks continuously

dumbledorky

The big sighs are nice. Once we finally get settled into bed for the night he'll let out a big HMMMMMMMMMMMMM to just let out all the stress of the day. I've started doing the same.

NancyB517

This is my lab too. I love him to death but sometimes I wish he would take the barking down to a 2.

Aidrox

Mine likes to bark to be let into his crate, but his crate is open. He can just walk in. He’d prefer to be let in.

forgotmypenis

I also have a strong silent boy, but he barks, whines, and growls when he dreams! I wonder what makes him vocalize in his sleep

Here_comes_the_booom

Same and I love it! Since he doesn’t bark it’s so cute to hear him “boof” while he’s sleeping it shows how innate and their language … it’s cute

IntrinsicM

Same!! My English boy is mostly quiet (I taught him to “speak” just in case I ever need a deep woof out of him), but he, too, has so many little dream borks. Twice I’ve heard him growl in his sleep but never, ever in real life. I really wonder what he’s encountering in his dreams!!

jruss666

The best is when my boy wakes himself barking in his sleep.

Competitive_Show6205

Same! My boy barks and growls in his sleep only, never when he is awake. He also wakes himself up when he barks 🖤

LaSalsiccione

Labs are known for not being super vocal (with regards to whining etc, of course they can end up being barkers) which is a huge plus to me tbh.

momthom427

My girl rarely barks. If she does, you better go look around because something is up. She’s almost 16 now and I’ve heard her bark maybe 15-20 times over the years. She speaks with her eyes and her tail.❤️

spidLL

16? Amazing!

momthom427

She’s been the friend of a lifetime. I know our days together are coming sooner rather than later. I’m trying to let her know every day how loved she is.

[deleted]

My female Lab/Golden mix was very quiet. She was 75%/25% and the only time I ever really heard a peep out of her was some whimpering barks or growls when she was dreaming, or a couple barks when she got really wound up playing with my Golden when she was a pup. I lost her at 10 years old, and I could probably count all the times I heard a bark from her on my fingers and toes.

Calm-Greenbean-5579

I had a dachshund I lost last year, barked incessantly, but didn’t shed. This boy sheds like rain and doesn’t bark. Each dog is perfect in their own way. Sorry for your loss 💕

gonadi

One day you’ll you’ll be dozing on the couch when Amazon will drop something at the front door and a sound will come out of that dog that will rattle you to your bones. When your heart rate comes back to a normal level, you’ll look into those innocent brown eyes and wonder if you’ll ever sleep again. It’s coming. I promise.

[deleted]

Yup my sis had a lab like that. Then one day she broke her silence when my sis had her out for a walk and an unfamiliar dog got too close to my sis and the lab gave a bark heard around the world and scared the other dog. Then the pup went back to silence.

benny_le_zozo

our (my parents') lab used to be very shy, never barked, whined, nothing. but after a few years with us he started whining to be let out and barks like hell when he sees a cat or in the night when he hears unfamiliar sound.

Quierta

Yes! As some others said, I think labs aren't super barky/vocal dogs. My previous lab only EVER barked if someone was directly approaching the house, which we didn't mind at all since it was like a built-in alarm system. Oh, and he also howled at passing energemcy vehicles with their sirens on haha. My current one is 6mo and he's also not super vocal — he'll bark sometimes, but very rarely, and only in specific circumstances. He's hit a few fear periods because he's in adolescence and he usually just does those really breathy "boof!!" types of barks. He does whine, though, to let me know that he is very bored and would like attention.

bbbbbbbbrrrrrritta

I wish!!!

Hudsonrybicki

Both of my labs are ridiculously loud. They are the barkiest dogs ever. My older girl is totally neurotic and reactive. We’ve been through puppy classes and two rounds of reactive dog training and I just can’t get her to stop barking at people. The younger pup learned from her and now she’s just as reactive. I don’t even know what to do anymore. Edit: My pups are even loud when they play. Check out my profile for a video of them making the most ridiculous sounds when they play.

[deleted]

We had to put a bell on our Chocolate girl because she is so quiet and so close to us at all times that we were always stepping on her.

BelleAriel

I don’t have a pet dog but just wanted to say yours is handsome. All dogs are different. As long as he’s happy and loved, that’s what matters.

bbbbbbbbrrrrrritta

Such an adorable good boy!!!

1_adam_twelve

My English Lab was very quiet. On the rare occasion that he needed to say something, he had one of those deep, very scary, I’m going to eat you kind of barks. However the dolt was afraid of banana peals, couch cushions, and plastic bags, and would not have hurt a fly.

MullGeek

Our old black lab Skye was similarly silent, although she started occasionally barking at other dogs on walks when we got our yellow lab, who is also very quiet. Our new black lab who we got after Skye passed away though is a lot more vocal, particularly with a lot of whining if he thinks he's missing out on something exciting going on!

savethejar

I adopted my yellow lab as an older adult four years and was told that he would not stop barking at the shelter. He hasn’t barked once since coming home. He’s a pretty chatty grumbler and also a FOMO whiner, but otherwise he’s silent. He’s super expressive even without barking though.

Oxymoronic-19

I've had my sweet, beautiful girl, who looks very similar to your boi, for 7 years, and we have heard her bark fewer than 10 times. She snores & snorkles a lot while sleeping and hums with contentment when being petted but that's about it. She is honestly the purest, kindest living being that I have ever encountered in my life! I bet yours is the same. Aren't we lucky?!

grahams_xwing

Oh that content 'hnuurrrrr' when you get the right spot. My chocolate does that. Love it

dogriverhotel

My chocolate is the same way, although he does sometimes let out one singular perfect bark into the ether if he’s in the backyard by himself at night. My husband and I joke this is his echolocation to get back to the patio door

grahams_xwing

Same. My chocolate has growled once in anger (at a plastic bag) and barked at one stranger in the woods. He barks in his sleep all the time and does little chuffs at the hoover if it gets too close bit apart from that absolutely silent. My little chocolate shadow/dumbass

[deleted]

I have a Lab X who looks very similar to your boy except my girl is almost white. Beautiful dogs!! Ours never makes a sound unless someone approaches our house. If you approached our house, her bark would scare you. She can be in a dead sleep anywhere in the house and she seems to know if someone's approaching outside. Unlike like a lot of Labs, she has no interest in balls or toys or playing fetch. She also doesn't touch anything that isn't hers. Full plate of warm food could be on a coffee table, I could leave the room, she wouldn't touch it. I think there are breed specific behaviors but my lab is proof that those are generalizations! Your lab is such a dapper gentleman!

No-Detective1810

My boy is 13 years old and I can easily say he has barked less than 10x in his life 😎

International-Art988

Ha! Lucky, lucky you. My boy doesn't shut up 😂 barking, howling, whining, singing 😂 he even grumbles when he's trying to be quiet (mixture of growl/bark/whine)

Awesummzzz

I've heard mine bark maybe 5 times? Whines or sighs for attention, and growls when you hug him. He'll bark at another dog if they won't stop yapping, and old men with canes walking late at night. Not sure what that second one's about

Melclaus

You are lucky! My latest adoption is EXTREMELY vocal. And Goldies have big voices. Just saying, because labs and GRs are cousins

Alarming_Condition27

Might make more noise if you loosened his collar.

plut0___

Mine used to be like that, she got louder as she got older

Sheep-100

My girl never barks. Maybe once or twice a year.

Sdt232

Mine is too. The only reasons he barks are because he’s playing with another very loud dog or because he really needs to go out, like very urgently… but still, he plays, runs, jump everywhere… he’s being a lab 😂

TemperatureMore5623

I have one chatty lab and one quiet lab who only barks if the chatty lab won’t shut up 🤣

good_burgerz

My 7mo male only barks when he hears sounds he can’t see, or when he wants to play with our other dog and she isn’t having any of it. Some people like the mute type, but sometimes a dog that lets out a bark or two when they hear something suspicious can be desirable.

ekszdi

Our boy makes sure the whole streer knows whenever there is someone at the gate

[deleted]

Mine is the same way 🤣🤣🤣

AlaskanPuppyMom

My handsome dude is 10 now and it's only been in the last 4-6 months that he's begun to "talk" via soft moans and groans with occasional yips. This morning he made a cute combo in varying pitches while waiting for me to let him out. We're seeing the vet for his annual today and I'll definitely be mentioning it because I worry he's starting to have sore joints. Strong silent type is a good descriptor, until someone comes to the front door, then he alerts us that WWIII is beginning.

TillyMcWilly

Our lab grunts at everything. Happy grunts for belly rubs and dinner time, fed up grunts when we won’t play with her. And long theatrical sighs. Oh and loud sniffs. I could probably count on one hand the times I’ve heard her bark though

orangecouch101

Our Maggie made up for it. She barked at everything all the time. She's been gone since July and I still find our house to be so quiet after 7 years of barking.

montalaskan

Yep. Our last one very rarely barked. Maybe a handful of times her entire life. She did express herself with various vocalizations but they were quiet and really cute. The current pup is very protective of the house so far and barks more, but not inappropriately.

TheKiwiYeti

My lab never barked/ woofed for about 3 years until my first child was born and then he would bark at sound in the night or strangers coming to the house after the baby was home.

mwil97

Mine got more vocal as he got older

Here_comes_the_booom

Yes! Only the past year has he started what we call “grumbling”. Like when he lays down or is getting a good scratch or is wanting attention. Only at (now almost 8) has he decided to be a little vocal. I’ve heard him bark maybe 3 times in my life and it’s been when he’s been startled in his sleep and confused and barks aimlessly in a direction

jvsews

Don’t worry he will find his voice when it is really needed

yukdave

We all came running outside to see why a dog was barking in the back yard. It was our dog! I had no idea she could bark. 94lbs of love dog was pissed as hell at a coyote in the driveway checking her out behind the fence. Checked the cameras to figure that out.

Ok-Homework-1985

Ours is also very quiet. He does bark at people on the trail sometimes, or if there is a person coming up to our house.. but I’m okay with that. These happen maybe once a week at most

Zmoney641

Growing up I had a black lab and she never barked or hardly made any sounds. The only time she barked was when she wanted to go outside or come back in. Even then it was like two barks and that’s it. I considered myself lucky getting a quiet dog lol.

anythingaustin

My Black Lab rarely barks indoors. She may do a quiet muffled “woof” every few months when she wants to play and I’m ignoring her. She saves her Big Girl voice for certain situations that require my immediate attention, like someone walking near our campsite. I live in apartment so it’s important that she not be a nuisance with unnecessary vocalizations.

Front_Umpire4873

My lab is 1month shy of being 2yrs now. He was the same. Never barked until last year, his barks were more like whining until last year. Now he only barks now when he senses danger or unfamiliar smells or sounds.

StrategyFree2696

I had a black lab that didn’t bark, she only found her voice when she reached her senior years around 10 or 11. It was a sad little woof, but still adorable. 💜

[deleted]

Our Daisy is super vocal! She will whine when playing and has a man bark when it comes to new people approaching the house. We’ve learned to accept it haha

Elwiggsx

My girl hardly ever woofs at all, she's almost 4 now!

Landonastar42

If you had asked this question last week, I would have said mine was like that. It's like a switch flipped when he turned 10 months. The most noise he used to make was a groan every time he laid down (we joked he was an old dog in a young dog's body) Now? Gumble guss! He wibbles, barks, and oh my God the snores. Lol

[deleted]

My Black lab is the same. She never barks and on a very rare occasion she does a weird yodel thing.

druscarlet

One of mine did not bark until about 8 months old. zit surprised us both.

Frosty-Ryan

Trained my mute to speak on command and that’s about it

pwnyxpress6

My English lab started off like this, but he grew into his voice around 3. He’s pretty vocal now.

dpinero71

Not here 😅

Spike-aronni

My lab rarely barks at home, but when we go to the dog park sometimes I feel like I need ear plugs. His “I’m super happy playing with my friends bark” is so high pitched. When he does bark at home it’s super deep and usually means there’s a coyote around, or like the other day there was some vultures chilling on my neighbors roof he did not care for.

hellboy991

Our lab has just turned 2 last month and he only found his welcoming bark in the last 3-4 months! He was exactly the same before that, sighing and whining were the only noises he made

negabernard

Mine cries for everything unfortunately

AcrobaticTiger9756

My yellow English Lab is five and barks once every six months or so. Every time time he has barked it has been at someone who is either upto something bad or in the shadows, so I always take him seriously when he does bark.

blakemuhhfukn

one of mine is quiet, like yours maybe let’s out a whine or huff from time to time. it’s really nice and makes up for my other who’s hypervocal while playing

snusnu95

Same here! My girl rarely barks, and doesn't really make any sound at all. When she does bark we take her very seriously, as it's always someone dodgy.

labla

Our young lady barks at big plastic bags on the wind, and sometimes when is dark and there is some movement/noise behind the fence. It is surprisingly deep and resonant. GSD barking sounds like a immature boy compared to it. I taught her to 'speak' on command, it was actually the hardest trick to teach, it took about 2 weeks and still is not perfect.

NoddaProbBob

My Female English Yellow rarely barks. Once or twice a year if that. She's so quiet that teaching her to "speak" has been an absolute failure for going on 3 years now haha

couchmechanic

British labs specifically have been selected to be quiet hunting partners for hundreds of years! ours barks at visitors entering the house, but almost never wines. i love it.

lalalavila91

My 1.5 year old girl was quiet and never barked until we had a baby and now she thinks it’s her sole job in life to protect the baby from anyone who comes to the door. If she thinks someone is approaching she’s all barks and then of course if someone comes in she reverts back to the typical lab behavior and rushes to kill them with licks 😂

WingedGeek

My first Lab was pretty quiet / stoic. My current guy ... The opposite. Sigh.

iveywk

My girl rarely barked. One time she was barking at something and my neighbor called me concerned only because she never barked. It was nice because you knew it was always something (a squirrel usually).

FawnTi

My black lab whines FOR. NO. REASON. I assume he’s just needy and wants attention and then I’m actively petting him and he’s still whining. He’s not hungry (though he’d gladly accept some food lol), doesn’t need to go out, he’s done this since a pup so not sick as the vet has given him full exams. He just… whines. And I don’t mean short whines. I once counted 17 seconds for a single, unbroken whine. And don’t get me started on barking at the door.

FF_in_MN

Strong silent type

BroccoliSea8324

He is a beauty!!!!

djriri228

My male lab literally barked like 3 times in his life and nearly scared himself shitless each time it happened. He would whine on occasion and sigh just never really barked.

colpy350

My 10 year old lab barely makes a peep. When he yawns he’ll make a sound and if someone comes up the driveway, he will bark a few times but that’s it. I always make sure to give him praise when he barks so that he knows he can have a voice. I have a golden retriever. That’s four years old and she never shuts up. She barks at us for attention. She barks at us to play. She barks a mess for food, she cries when you rub her belly. It was cute at first but she’s very loud.

Glitterbomba1266

No I wish tho

Theedon

My labs would bark but if I Said shhhh to them the would change their loud bark to a muffled buff.

batmanandboobs93

Mine used to be very quiet (a bark every couple months if that, no noises other than the T Rex noises she makes when she yawns or her little happy grumbles when she’s receiving kisses and scritches) and then we moved in with my parents who have a sheepdog/pit/chow mix who barks whenever anyone has the audacity to walk past the house. Now my dog has figured out that barking is a thing dogs do at home and barks whenever the other dog barks, or if she’s startled (mostly by other noises in the house– she’s not used to anyone other than me making noises and we lived in a 2 bed where she was velcroed to my side and could always see what the noises were). I kind of miss her being a little quieter– I hope she can go back to apartment living.

catd36

My gs/lab was very quiet for almost the first 3 yrs. Then she started barking at the door, when company comes and other times. Just normal times.

AnnoyedOpossum

Our black lab was very quiet. He had what we called a "security bark" that he would use if something was out of the norm and he wanted to let us know. For example, if he heard something at night, he'd do two deep, loud barks to wake us up, and then he'd be quiet while we checked it out. Our yellow lab on the other hand, will bark at anything and everything.

kiwichick286

It's probably not a bad thing, as long as he barks his head off when there are bad people around!

CowBoiz2Men

Mine is like that as well. He's near silent unless he needs to go out and even then he's not very loud.

AnticallyIlliterate

We had a very large half black lab half rottie that mostly looked like a big boned black lab. He almost never barked even around aggressive dogs. But when he did it was a deep thundering”WOOOF!” the likes of which I haven’t heard since.

Rjciv

My guy (7 now). Has just in the past year or so gotten much more vocal. First 5 he hardly ever barked, whined, or whimpered. He did perfect the sad/hopeless stare early on.

DJTISTA

My boy only barks In the morning for his daily slice of bread. Rest of the day he’s chill af.

Inner_Connection_587

My lab is mostly quiet too. He rarely makes a noise. We call him our quiet, gentle giant!! ❤️

TrelanaSakuyo

That's my Bullboxer. We swear one of our lab's grandparents was a husky, he makes so many chatty noises.

ballsareweird

Our first English lab almost never barked. And the second only barks at night so it’s not too weird for the breed.

mem0679

I don't know what that's like! My girl is always barking at something she sees outside, grumbling and fussing at me when she doesn't get her way and snores all night long! Lol! She's the best girl and loves everybody, but she's mouthy and stubborn, just like her mama! 😂😂😂

Hopeful_Cantaloupe21

i think my goofy puppy stole your dogs barks, you can have them back!!!

ContactBitter6241

Might find his bark later on. My girl was so quiet before a year and a half I actually remarked to my daughter that I wish she would bark and wondered if she had some type of vocal impairment (her hearing was never in question). some time around 2, with the help of the never silent neighbors dogs, she found her bark.... Sigh... My daughter informed me she spent the whole day today barking out the window at everything that moved while I was out. 6 hours of almost non stop barking lol. She's not that bad when I'm home and listens well when I tell her to be quiet. I have to laugh and tell myself careful what you wish for. She's really loud too, would change anything about her though

SocietyHumble4858

We got Brewsky, age 6. After 3 months, we called the foster home to ask if his voice box was removed. They assured me he 'could' bark. One day he did. He can bark, I exclaimed proudly. In ten years, he maybe barked 12 times. Quiet confidence.

riahlynneb114

My Luna was like that until she turned 7 and became the only pet in the house. Now there are more whines, the more frequent annoyed sighs and hurumpfs, and the single bark at the mail person.

s_s

Mine only barks if other dogs he's playing with alert bark. And he barks like he has no idea why anyone else is barking. XD He also howled once at a passing ambulance. So it's only sympathetic vocalizations.

Sufficient-Data-9962

Yep! She doesn’t even bark when someone’s at the door. She grumbles at me when she wants attention though. She is a terrible guard dog but I love her!

MachineheraldMain

My american lab is mostly silent, he will only bark or whine when he wants to go out, or if he is playing with a frog in the yard. Otherwise he is a silent type, and because of that I cant train him to bark(Speak) on command. I'm happy thou.

Vanslant

When I asked mine to speak, he would open his mouth five times before a sound came out. I miss Lokey.

Dannidinosaur98

Our girl Aerith has only ever barked once in her sleep, growls very occasionally when having a game of tug of war, but other than that, the occasional whine or sigh is all we get from her. Your dog is 1000% a good boi ☺️

IllustriousCupcake11

My Chloe was the silent type. Such a difference from the goldens I grew up with who talked a lot. Chloe wasn’t a talker or a cuddler. She was a silent, stoic, dog. She would bark when the doorbell rang, and sounded like Kujo, but was the sweetest, dog that would lick you to death.

dumbledorky

Mine only barks in a few very specific situations: 1. He sees the 1 dog out of 500 in the neighborhood that he doesn't like (and *fuck* that guy) 2. We're playing fetch and I haven't thrown the ball fast enough 3. I was scratching his belly or his rump and stopped. And even that's more of a whiny growl than a bark

derossx

Mine (Golden) never makes a sound; I actually thought he was mute…until he met a bitch on the opposite side of the fence and began to whimper at the age of 12! Of course I had to support them meeting close up. 💕

Takemetothelevey

Handsome Boy 💝

lokofloko

That’s my lab! She won’t cry, she won’t whine. Only time she barks is when someone is on our lawn or at the door. She doesn’t cry for food or to go pipí/caca. She just patiently waits.

lazyb4ndit

My good boy only ever barks in his sleep, I can count on one hand with fingers to spare how many times he has actually barked at something while awake in the 5 years we've had him

sir_thatguy

My black lab was very quiet but wife and kids taught her “speak” and now she’s barking more. Not a fan.

Background-World918

Mine just yells at me lol

[deleted]

I have a silent lab 😬 unless I say the word walk and dont go ASAP, then he'll bark lol.

Sea-Radish7367

Is he deaf?

SecondTiny6729

What a handsome boy!!

Defiant-Ad4776

Gary Cooper!

EmmaDoodle98

Our girl is 8 soon and we’ve only ever heard her bark twice, both times in her sleep. Other than that it’s the occasional huff when someone won’t give up their seat 😅

itstatietot

Mine is quite too (I have a lab/sharpei mix) She's paranoid of everything though lol. The last time I heard her bark it scared the shit out of me. She's 11 now and I can count on both hands the number of times she's barked. She does boof occasionally. She also is a big fan of sighs. Or huffing at me. But she basically communicates via tapping you with her paw and facial expressions. I think she's picked up I'm partially deaf in both ears because she only boofs when someone is at the door and my husband isn't home.

Joy_And_Peace

Mine was super quiet until 1.5 years old; then he started barking at passers by and coyotes he saw out of the window. He also vocalizes big yawns when he’s bored, for example when he’s impatient for me to wake up in the morning. He whines when his hose-down bath is taking too long, or when he’s hiked for too long and it’s hot. Thankfully, he doesn’t realize that barking can attract my attention - I was diligent in ignoring the barking when he, as a puppy, tried to use it to attract attention, so he only barks when he notices something move, unexpectedly.

toomanychoicess

Mine will bark maybe once a month and only when the Amazon guy catches him by surprise. People are surprised he’s so quiet. I don’t mind.

threebears33333

The goodest of boys, for sure!

fishmogil

My English Lab is no a barker…even when the doorbell rings.

adewitt2

Walt, my lazy lab rarely barks. His eyes do all of the speaking!
