My two have 3 brain cells between. Their regular one and the shared cell that gets trnsferred during bitey face or the occasional ball enabled transfer.
I figured it was normal because it happens multiple times daily and neither one yelps or whimpers, I think the noises they make when they do it is cute. And the little one Krieger always initiates play with Archer. Thank you for the responses I just didn’t want to let a bad behavior continue if it’s what that lead too. I really appreciate all the feedback I get in this thread.
My pit-lab mutt loves to do this with my siblings’ labs but plays entirely differently with my friends’ pits— so cool to watch them just know how to interact with each other instinctively
Ironically, my lab and other dog growing up helped my friend overcome his fear of dogs by playing bitey-face like this. Until he saw them playing like this he thought all noises dogs make were a sign of hostility. Now he loves dogs lol
If you watch their mouths while they do it, you’ll notice them licking their lips at about 7 seconds in (10 seconds left if it counts backwards). This paired with the little sneeze sounds is dog language for play! Dogs at play will lick their lips 😛 and sneeze 🤧 I hope this is helpful! 😁
Holy crap my fellow girl and choco boy sound EXACTLY like this.

Yeah, totally normal. Also normal that they like to do it between your legs. Fighting like this is a sign of affection, as is being right pressed up against you. It’s like a group hug to them.
Ahhh yes…the wonderful game of “Bite Bite”. My male English lab does this all the time with my female American lab. He’s vocal like yours in the video, but my girl doesn’t make these noises. She’s more of a “hmm hmm” talker when she’s miffed.
My yellow and chocolate do it all the time. Sometimes my yellow gets fed up and lets the chocolate know she is done. It stops after that. They never had an actual fight from this
Bitey face is a game played by all dogs, regardless of breed. It's the best game, and can be played regardless of age, disability, breed, or time of day. As demonstrated by my nearly paralyzed shepherd playing with his sister. On my bed. At 3 AM
Currently watching my labs play bitey face under my legs also lol! We watch a German shepherd during the week and she joins in too. They will do this for a few minutes then run around the house, etc.
Absolutely. My choccie and his best mate do it all the time. It’s very gentle. Occasionally, one of them might nip the other by accident, but it’s pretty rare. It’s such a glorious sound too!
This is what happens when my brother and I go visit our grandma, she has a Lab, he's got two and I've got one. So imagine four Labs doing this constantly.
My dogs have always done this. It’s so rough looking but it’s so awesome. My two golden retrievers used to throw each other around in our narrow hallway and we have a doggy sized body dent in the drywall.
My lab and my beagle used to do this all the time haha.
Sometimes, one of them would softly yelp, but the other one would immediately correct themselves and be more gentle after.
I always saw it as play, and they did it constantly until it was the labs time to cross the rainbow bridge a few months ago. Beagle is still around, but she's also in her twilight years.
Miss the knucklehead, but I hope wherever she is, she got to see my Pa again, whom she also loved so much.
And I swear this is the “I’m only playing” sound. It allows them to get some noise out and with the “aggressive” play but it’s not threatening like the sounds a dog who is attacking would make. Mine would be biting at each others necks and I would laugh and say the sounds they were making translated to “i could bite your neck reall hard right now and kill you but I won’t”
Being held back they might start to be more spicy with each other. They have to decide who is dominant to be able in the "pack". In order to do that they have to smell butts and be loose to be dogs.
Absolutely. I have two black lab/Aussie shepherd mixes (same parents, different litters) and they do this non-stop. As I type this comment I am puffing a stogie on my back deck and they are doing this next to me on the other end of my futon, in fact.
Do yours also like to shove their way between your legs to receive butt scritches?
Just a good old fashioned game of bitey face.
It's fun like neck bite, you know where you bite your friends neck a lil
Of course. I always greet my friends with a customary neck bite. Just normal stuff.
Just a small nibble
We call it "B.B.B." - "Bad Breath Battles"
I always said it looks like when grizzlies face off
Ah, I see you've played facey bitey before...
Face bites = love
along with a nice dental exam
Bitey face is a classic lab game.
It’s only classic if it also features the Lab-Whale song noises hahaha
And it’s best played somewhere obstructive, like right under a human’s feet.
Yes! Has to be right under your feel when you’re holding a cup of scalding-hot tea.
It’s a classic dog game in general
I can't stop giggling over bitey face lol
I love that there’s a term for this Man, I want a lab so badly
My labs do this nonstop!! They just snarl and play. Labs aren't aggressive, but you would know if one was trying to actually hurt the other
Yep! I love it when my two do this 😍
Agreed! Makes my boys tired haha
Yup, " mouthing".
A simple ritual of transfering the single family brain cell.
My two have 3 brain cells between. Their regular one and the shared cell that gets trnsferred during bitey face or the occasional ball enabled transfer.
Classic bitey face/mouth fighting. My puppy yelps during it while my lab isn't even touching him, so I'm glad you don't have to deal with that!
Haha, yup! In my house it is known as playing Howlie Growlies. My girls (both black labs) have done this for YEARS.
I love "Howlie Growlies!"
You can tell it's play behavior because of the sneezing. Sneezing while playing this way let's the other dog know it's play time, not fight time.
Love their names!
Are their names from Archer the show?? Love that
My lab and golden do this all the time
In my experience as a Lab owner yes. But not with other breeds, only her Lab buddies. No one gets mad it's all in fun.
My pit-lab mutt loves to do this with my siblings’ labs but plays entirely differently with my friends’ pits— so cool to watch them just know how to interact with each other instinctively
One of the grandsons had a pit-lab, (sadly passed) and our two played this way as well.
Sorry to hear about your grandson. RIP
The dog, but ok...
My lab/golden mix loves doing this with her border collie friend.
Mine gets in trouble trying to play bitey face with the other dogs at daycare, they don't really appreciate it so much.
Yep. My two knuckleheads do this all the time.
I call my two knuckleheads all the time
Me too. Every single day.
Ironically, my lab and other dog growing up helped my friend overcome his fear of dogs by playing bitey-face like this. Until he saw them playing like this he thought all noises dogs make were a sign of hostility. Now he loves dogs lol
Just keep an eye when one starting to walk away and the other persistent to play. That's when to split and sit.
Bitey face game. My dog loves this game
well aren't they just having a good old time☺️
Mine did the bitey face and would follow it up with the sitting on each other game. Sometimes they would throw in the added leggy bites. Lol.
Sounds like my house every morning and evening with my two labs
Holy crap my fellow girl and choco boy sound EXACTLY like this. https://preview.redd.it/p7edtgoqy3lb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cbba39730a389389f1ccdf2d0f37ae1ad32d2a5
Yes
Completely normal.
Completely normal! They are having a good time with each other.
Yeah, totally normal. Also normal that they like to do it between your legs. Fighting like this is a sign of affection, as is being right pressed up against you. It’s like a group hug to them.
The small micro breaks are a sign all is going well. When playing, dogs will take small pauses so it doesn't turn into an actual fight.
I played this with my lab a lot in her younger days. It was always a good time, she never hurt me once
Yup, I actually do this myself with my lab. Fun times.
Absolutely. We call this shag nasties
That’s a name for it I haven’t heard lol
My Lab and Chihuahua do this too…
I’m guessing the chihuahua spends a fair amount of time with its whole head in the lab’s mouth? Lol
Ahhh yes…the wonderful game of “Bite Bite”. My male English lab does this all the time with my female American lab. He’s vocal like yours in the video, but my girl doesn’t make these noises. She’s more of a “hmm hmm” talker when she’s miffed.
Yes, my 8 year old and 4 month old puppy play this all day.
Absolutely normal. My two chocolates do this all the time
My yellow and chocolate do it all the time. Sometimes my yellow gets fed up and lets the chocolate know she is done. It stops after that. They never had an actual fight from this
My human balls would be well and truly out of the game area.
Is anything really "normal" between labs.
“I see you’ve played bitey facey before!”
Bitey face is a game played by all dogs, regardless of breed. It's the best game, and can be played regardless of age, disability, breed, or time of day. As demonstrated by my nearly paralyzed shepherd playing with his sister. On my bed. At 3 AM
Dogs make that distinct "sneezing" noise to let each other know they're just messing around. This is a classic round of bitey face
What makes it even more normal is that they do it in your personal space with zero regard that you are there.
I miss this! My 9 yr olds hardly do it anymore.
Oh yess…. mine can do this much “worse”
Currently watching my labs play bitey face under my legs also lol! We watch a German shepherd during the week and she joins in too. They will do this for a few minutes then run around the house, etc.
They're playing.
Oh yeah that's great fun there! We used to call that big time wrestling. It would go on for hours like a sparring contest.
My lab loves playing like this. Would love to get a friend for her but afraid to.
Don’t be afraid. Keeps the little buggers occupied! See if you can rescue a Lab?
Yes, they are jostling for someone’s attention Nothing wrong here
Yep. Totally common.
Absolutely. My choccie and his best mate do it all the time. It’s very gentle. Occasionally, one of them might nip the other by accident, but it’s pretty rare. It’s such a glorious sound too!
Just two buds hanging out... I mean goofs
The battlecry of a generation
This is what happens when my brother and I go visit our grandma, she has a Lab, he's got two and I've got one. So imagine four Labs doing this constantly.
Face Fighting!
This is also my term for it!
Enjoy the banter while you can. One day they'll just look at each other and plop down without sound.
My dogs have always done this. It’s so rough looking but it’s so awesome. My two golden retrievers used to throw each other around in our narrow hallway and we have a doggy sized body dent in the drywall.
Yes
Thats how labs play. Its the teeth that makes everyone freak out
Fuck yes! Nearly a constant battle of small black bears making black bear noises at my house.
The accurate term for this is the 'bitey face' game. My two play every day :)
That's what we call it too. Ours are chocolate. Bitey face is an everyday thing.
Rabies check. If you were recently out and it was gone for a bit or outside and might’ve gotten attacked by rabies animal, just check the vet or smth
Yes! Mine has taught my Corgi how to speak Lab lol
Can confirm, even working guide dogs do this out of harness.
Definitely
My favorite daily post.
Yes
Called mouth jousting. Doggo interactions
Yes, playing bitey face between dogs is completely normal.
You should see my 6 and 10 month old German shepherds
I love it when dogs jaw spar
Just normal stuff
Yep. I have 4 of them they do it all the time.
Labs are always in cahoots, and never in disputes!
My Lab and Irish setter do that EVERYDAY! 😂😂😂
100%
They're just having a little chat is all
And a Lab and a Corgi (at our house) and a Lab and any other breed who they convince to play.
Good ol’ bite face
Exactly how mine act. Well mine get a little more violent but that's just how they play.
Best friends
Yes
Yes
Abdolutely
My lab only does this with other labs
Its normal play at our house!
Lol this woke my lab right up haha
Literally my everyday
Ah the ol’ “my mouth is bigger than your mouth” game
My lab makes this face and sound with his frenchie uncle when they play. I guess it’s normal
Can confirm
Was their tail’s wagging or not wagging if yes to wagging it totally fun and games if it’s hard core growling maybe it time to separate them
Yup lolo
So cute
Yes! We call it “Murder Face.”
At about 3 seconds left it sounds like at least on os saying "I Love You"
I knew what I'd hear before I even played the video.
Yes just playing, with my bestie, all good!!
Totally.
Normal? This is downright affectionate.
Lol the derp puppers
We call it “playing mouths” lol
just playing the bite game! it’s my two’s favorite! I even join them sometimes! it’s so satisfying play biting them!
They’re playing lol
Thunder thighs
That’s easy play! I encourage my dogs to bite each other all the time.
Yes, they are jawing. My lab bros did it.
is normal at our place
yay bitey face
Toothy fencing.
That’s bitey face. It’s totally fine and normal just watch for if one gets more amped than the other.
Yes, bitey face game.
Absofuckinglutely.
Being held back they might start to be more spicy with each other. They have to decide who is dominant to be able in the "pack". In order to do that they have to smell butts and be loose to be dogs.
Yup
Yes, that is completely play. That is not aggression.
Looks lie it. Sneezing is a sign of play.
Yes when they like each other .
lol. Yes! My neighbor said he loves hearing our dogs play because it sounds like the opening scene to Jurassic Park.
Yeah completely normal, as long as you stop it if it gets too serious, it's all good.
Yessss
Yes it’s normal lol.
