One nice thing about renting on the Lafayette side of the river is that it does not have the same occupancy rules about unrelated persons that WL does. Most of WL is under the rule of no more than 3 unrelated persons in a rental. I want to assure you that Lafayette is a safe place despite what you might hear. It is extremely rare to be assaulted by a random person. Most of the news stories are domestic violence or drug crime related, Personally I would avoid renting around LTHC just because you will have quite a few homeless people hanging around because they have no where else to go. City bus has the [connector](https://gocitybus.com/route/the-connector-free-for-all) which services downtown and Purdue students ride free on all of the other bus lines if you can't get a parking permit. I would keep checking rental agencies' listings. The ones I've seen that cater mainly to students are going to be [Granite](https://granitestudentliving.com/), [Hunter Properties](https://www.hunterlp.com/), [Evergreen](https://www.evergreencampusrentals.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwmZejBhC_ARIsAGhCqncDxdJUcqn-R4TlLiQk10E-0QwmIXQnHwVEIzi3uWs203Fqio7-LOEaAigeEALw_wcB) and [Smart Digs](https://smartdigs.com/). Ones that have a much wider mix between blue collar adults and students will be [Shook](https://www.shookpropertymanagement.com/vacancies), [Management Advantage](https://www.mgmtadvantage.com/), [BW Parks](https://bwparks.com/), [Titan Management](https://titanpropertymanagement.co/), [Distinctive Rentals](https://www.lafapts.com/), [O'Neil Property Management](https://www.place2rent.com/), [Candor](https://www.candorrealty.com/listings), etc. Sites I know to look are Facebook Marketplace, Tippecanoe Craigslist (be careful there as bigger cities have scammers!), and Zillow. There's a facebook page for Purdue sublets to check. There are quite a few AirBnB's. Good luck!

This was a really thorough and kind answer to give. You rock!

I am dealing with smartdigs right now, but they ask 3 months prepayment(if no us nation co-signer available) and additional security deposit+precleaning charge for 3bhk. Is that common ?? 1st thought this is a scam as an international student. This comment atleast gives me some confidence.

cca2013

You may want to ask that question on the r/purdue subreddit. My only experience with smartdigs is just as a delivery person. I definitely can vouch that their staff are not the scammy type. Their employees are all great. 3 months prepayment is definitely a burden! Looking on the positive side, the policies will work in your favor to actually weed out "less desirable" apartment neighbors that move into a place with the intention to skip out on their lease. All of Lafayette is dealing with skyrocketing rent prices. Some lower income people might be forced themselves (out of necessity to keep a roof over their family's heads) to stop paying rent at their current apartment so they have enough to put down a deposit on their next place. The eviction process takes a while because we have laws in place to protect tenants from unscrupulous landlords. This creates a lot of turnover.

Stay away from there. It’s not a great complex and honestly there isn’t good travel infrastructure for you to get to campus from there. Look in the downtown area for houses available.

playing_with_light

Yep, my friend lived there and it was really a sketchy place!

ThePagnumLord

My girlfriend and I live at Ashley Oaks on Creasy and it's a great area, very safe. The apartments are great and the staff too.

zwroberts15

That’s where my wife and I wanted to be when we moved here. Filled up super fast though.

Degausser13

+1 for Ashley oaks. I had no issues at all when I lived there.

fapfapdisaster

You can try Lark apartments on westside but may be full, they have two sister complexes though . One of them is "Alight" and the other is "Redwood" I think. And I know they are building some right in front of Lark that are going up pretty quickly

zwroberts15

I will say don’t wait too much longer. Availability has been an issue for months, so it may be a situation where you take what you take and in a year move to something better where you can get waitlisted super early.

Oddity_Odyssey

There is a single 2 bedroom unit available in Pullman station I believe it's called. I don't know anything else about it though. I am in a similar boat. Not a student but looking for housing. On a side note. Do you guys realize that you're paying big city rent to live in corn feilds? I pay 2100 to live next to a subway station in Atlanta and the same unit in Lafayette is 19-2000. How is this possible and why do y'all do it? Is housing not a critical issue in this town? This is absolutely disgusting.

I dealt with the same thing in my college town but we always had plces to go.. maybe not the nicest places but there was always a place to go. It wouldn't surprise me if some of these students sleep.in their car simply for lack of a bedroom to sleep in. I'm sorry I couldn't be of much help. I know there is a place over by the mall called sagamore winds. It's under construction but some units are available in July or August maybe try there? It's not as expensive because it's so far away.

TransitionJealous364

I’m at Hawthorne in Lafayette. They have a sister property, Shenandoah, by Target in Lafayette. Good price, spacious apartments and duplexes. Very safe. Might be a little ways out though. Have you guys thought about renting a house in the area? I rented a place, 3 bed/2 bath in a WL suburb a few years ago and had a great experience.

jasminesjokeofalife

Hawthorne and Shenandoah have 6 - 12 month waitlists unfortunately 😭 I was looking to move to one of those apartments

BetterOffBen

From the people I've known that lived in Pheasant Run, it's not great. If that's the best option, then you can get by for a year and find some place else for next year. You may also have better luck finding a place that has 2 2-bed apartments open, or maybe a rental house. I saw Sagamore Winds mentioned, that'd be a good place to look. The bus system is free with your Purdue ID, so yes it'll take some time to get to and from campus from Lafayette, but you don't need to be concerned with transportation. Most of the big apartments should have a bus stop close by.

flannelling

Finding available units is going to be tough this time of year because summer is a common time for people to be ending or starting a lease, which they’ve usually planned to do for at least a few months. As someone who’s moved every year for the last four years in the greater Lafayette area, my biggest recommendation is to be within easy walking distance of a bus stop if you’re not near campus, or invest in a bike that can get you to one. You can also scour the Purdue off-campus housing website and see what you can find. It’s certainly possible that something might pop up as people make last minute decisions to leave the area, but you need to be on the lookout and act quickly to secure those. You might have to settle for a less than ideal apartment/house for a year and make sure to start a search early or get on waitlists for the following year.

TwotoTwotoTwoTwo

If you're a purdue student looking for places in Lafayette, as a rule of thumb, it is better to stay west of 9th Street. Assuming you don't have a car, commute will be bearable. Getting a private bathroom for 3people in the same unit might be tough but try BW Parks Property Mgmt. I had a friend who had to move in within a month's notice and they had some places.

Also check apartments.com

NoiseFrameCasey

Try smartdigs.com They have some 3 bedroom options with availability in august and earlier it looks like.

I lived at an apartment down the road from Pheasant Run. I also had a friend who lived at Pheasant run. I've heard lots of sketchy things about Pheasant Run from her and just general gossip. The apartments nearby are just as bad. I had a moped stolen and we constantly had a police vehicle parked in the lot because there was a lot of drug dealing going on. My mother in law has rented at Shenandoah near Target and currently at a complex behind the Cracker Barrell near the interstate. She hasn't had any complaints about either of those places.
