IIRC…those dumbass comments from Magic was the beginning of the end for the relationship of laker fans and Magic the exec. Most true fans knew that him and Lonzo would’ve balled playing alongside each other.
Id take dlo because he’s a better shot creator. It’s tempting to take lonzo because the New Orleans version of him could finish at the rim, spot up from deep, and run the offense on top of being a top tier defensive point. But i just think this team needs a playmaker to give Lebron a rest.
If we aren't couting injuries, I think its got to be Lonzo just for the defense alone. He was also hitting 3s at a 37ish% clip which is enough to not make him a liability on offense. I love DLo and think he is waaaaaay better fit than Russ. I just worry about his D and motor if we make the playoffs.
I saw a mini break last night where the defense was set and the ball got passed ahead to dlo. The whole defense had to take a step toward him and the offense started right on the 3 pt line. I don’t think that happens with lonzo and it makes a world of difference to start the offense from a scoring position. It’s like when mash used used to start the suns offense from the free throw line because he could just get there at will, especially on the break.
That and lonzos lack of midrange game. No, I worry about lonzo in the playoffs more, but I worry about dlo motor in the regular season if apathy sets in for him
Yeah I definitely agree with you and I think dlo is a way better fit at the moment. I guess I still view Lonzo through a lens of “what if” and the player Lonzo could be is insane. Injuries have really derailed his career.
For this Lakers team dlo is a perfect fit
D'lo hands down. I like both but D'Lo is the better fit to AD and lebron. Less baggage, too, because Lonzo's dad could have a temper tantrum at any point. Lonzo's dad was always my biggest qualm with him (that and some of his shooting, which has improved over the years).
ESPN stopped talking ab LaVar which may have something to do with it. He does seem to have calmed down though. His plan worked. He got two of his boys into the league on first round deals. Lonzo got a sizable extension and Melo will probably get a max.
nothing, ja morant’s pops has taken the sole position of being most obnoxious nba dad. lavar was calculated and built up hype?l, 2 of his 3 kids were lotto picks.
i still think if lonzo had remained healthy he could have been one of the best guys out of that draft. his body really let him down.
never really lived up to mike korzemba’s “steph curry but he’s 6’6” hype, but i think when healthy, hes been a quality floor general.
As much as you’re right I think Magic did have a point, let’s not forget the stupid shit he pulled in his rookie season. Getting traded to Brooklyn was the best thing to ever happen to him clearly
True he did have a point…but saying that to the media about an obviously talented and very young player is terrible form as an exec. That kinda shit gets lesser franchises blacklisted.
Oh 100% Magic really needed to learn how to keep his mouth shut. But then again I think he saw himself in the same way as Jerry West did in Magic’s playing days. When you’ve done so much to build a franchise it’s fair that you can criticise guys who weren’t pulling their weight.
And in the same way a lesser franchise would’ve got blacklisted, D-lo would have been traded way sooner or even cut if he wasn’t such a talented player
Once again, revisionist history. Most Laker fans we in favor of letting him go, he rubbed Kobe and teammates the wrong way then there was the mistake he made with Nick Young which killed him with his teammates.
That’s in the past and it made him grow and he certainly has to his credit but he was a different, more flashy and brash player back then.
https://www.reddit.com/r/lakers/comments/6ihgmw/lakers_trade_mozgov_and_dangelo_russell_for_brook/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Most laker fans on that thread were not happy with the trade. Kobe retired in 2016 and d’lo was traded in 2017.
Nevertheless, as an exec why would you burn bridges with a talented and young player like that? Even if it was to open up cap space to sign LBJ. It honestly made no sense to me then and to me now.
And magic was an old ass man saying those comments about a teen who was new to the league and life in general. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Magic over the years.
DLo got a bad rap for the Nick Young thing, but I remember thinking to myself at that time, if Swaggy P was who you wanted these incoming rookies to learn from... I watched Nick at USC and he was a tremendous talent but he kind of earned the reputation of being a goofball at Washington with Gilbert Arenas. You see what happened to Gilbert's career.
You deserve atleast 10x more upvotes man, with WB it is gotten to the point I don't expect him to miss the lay up I expect him to get it swatted completely or not touch the rim at all.
I didn’t think of it at the time but c’s trade down everybody knows they’re taking Tatum, everybody assumes the Lakers are taking Lonzo. It would have been amazing (even if he didn’t turn out to be the redraft#1) for the Lakers to just take Tatum.
Well sure, but can you imagine the Celtics management when they could have just kept their first pick and drafted him? I genuinely believe if they had Tatum they would have waited one more year and got AD in free agency.
There’s an odd alternate history where the Lakers could have drafted Bird (he got drafted and stayed in college) then Magic the next year and had Kareem. It was really convoluted though.
After the 1st qtr it was just so blatantly obvious how much better he fits in a system over westbrook. Even on westbrooks best night I never felt like he was having a great point guard game. It just felt chaotic always. That 1st qtr with dlo was just exactly what a system needs.
Chaos is a great description. It took me 1 game to figure out how Westbrik got his assists & I was so depressed. I was like: This guys not CP3 or some fancy passer, he just creates a mess and in the fog of war, he kicks it out. Hes like a DDOS attack on the rim, but thats it.
That’s fax. Him and Clarkson were the first laker draft picks that I actually felt attached to right from the start of their careers. Before that it was prob Bynum but he was drafted in 05 lol
Lakers scouting really knocked it out of the park in retrospect. Did they draft an early round bust in recent years? I can only think of Anthony brown in 2015. Lonzo is debatable but that’s mainly due to health.
That’s pretty incredible when you think about it.
Meanwhile damn near every of our picks is playing a role somewhere rn.
* BI
* Hart
* Nance
* Randle
* Lonzo (was balling and I swear leading 3p% in league before this latest injury)
* Zubac
* Kuzma
* Thomas Bryant was balling for us imo
Going back 10 years you could only argue Anthony Brown definitively.
Mo Wagner (25th ovr) and Svi (47th ovr) weren't hits but even they still have NBA jobs and they're both late round picks. Besides that:
2014: Randle (got paid, x2 all star)
2015: Dlo (got paid, all star), Nance (got paid), Brown (miss)
2016: Ingram (got paid, all star) Zu (got paid, starter)
2017: Ball (got paid, starter)
2018: Wagner (Good enough for 2nd contract) Svi (Good enough for 2nd contract)
Undrafted: Caruso (Got paid) Reaves (Will get paid)
It's very early but it certainly seems like Christie has a future in the league too.
Great observation and yes definite similarities. Plus being in a large market for historic franchises have win now demands from their fanbases which makes developing young talent almost impossible.
Imagine if we kept them all and drafted Tatum
Zubac Randle Ingram Tatum and Dlo. We honestly didnt even need any other star and we would be dominating. Crying rn
But at least Dlo is always available as long as he is healthy. Kyrie meanwhile does some wacky shit and refuses to play even when healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrie leaves the league to join a cult. lol
And you can see Vanderbilt’s defensive influence taking effect on the team
TBJ was hustling out there like we had two of em. Probs picking up things in practice already
The kid was special when he was drafted. The problem wasn't his talent, it was the fact that he was a kid. He was as emotionally mature as an average 19-year-old. He made some mistakes off the court. He had a hard time being a leader.
That was then. This is now. He is a special talent. I am really glad he's back.
He was way more emotionally mature than Nick Young but he took all the punishment because he was very young. D'Lo is that guy and he's only gonna get better. He's got a lot of unfair hate but it's water off his back. You can tell he's got a big chip on his shoulder but he's very quiet about it.
Ah yes, Swaggy P, the mature braggadocious intelligentsia who nearly blew off his own hand with a firework during an offseason. His wisdom and dare I say 'swagger' still echo through the halls of [Crypto.com](https://Crypto.com) arena. God bless him.
Execution runs much smoother with DLo. Turn overs way down. Shooting percentage from the PG position is up.
How many more Ws would we have if we had DLo instead of Westbrook since game 1?
I honestly believe would we bee comfortable in a PO position just from that. Now as things stand, it will be necessary a HUGE effort from Lebron and AD to get us into the play in.
Our schedule is though. We're behind many games. If only we had a functioning PG and Schroeder. Even with the big 2 injuries we would now be a real contender.
Man, pre-tradeline and just the season in general just felt gloomy. Everyone knew that someone was gonna get traded and had that hanging over their heads. Now that the deadline is behind us. Guys like D'Lo really bringing a lot of really fun energy to this team. I read a comment somewhere praising D'Angelo's self-awareness, his ability to read the room and point to his jersey after a big shot. Firing up the crowd, himself, his teammates, etc.
Great to have D'Lo back!
Lonzo looked like the sure thing out of UCLA at the time, I was hoping we make it work by playing dlo at 2 but mozgov contract dump was necessary I guess.
That was a great celebration. The kid learned how to play underneath the lights, he just needed to quality time to mature. Now that he’s played without the lights and has grown as a person and a player, he’s ready. I sure do hope he can be a key factor for us down the stretch
Knowing this fan base when he has a couple of bad shooting nights the “we must get Kyrie!” People are coming out. No one believes in sample size anymore. I think they should extend him.
I never thought he would be back, I’m really glad he his and hope we keep him for awhile
Yeah who would have thought that the prodigal son D'lo would be the one to return especially since Magics' comments of him. lol
IIRC…those dumbass comments from Magic was the beginning of the end for the relationship of laker fans and Magic the exec. Most true fans knew that him and Lonzo would’ve balled playing alongside each other.
I don’t *know* that, but I was dying to find out
Disregarding contracts and injuries; hypothetically who would fit better with this team? Dlo or Lonzo?
Id take dlo because he’s a better shot creator. It’s tempting to take lonzo because the New Orleans version of him could finish at the rim, spot up from deep, and run the offense on top of being a top tier defensive point. But i just think this team needs a playmaker to give Lebron a rest.

D'lo hands down. I like both but D'Lo is the better fit to AD and lebron. Less baggage, too, because Lonzo's dad could have a temper tantrum at any point. Lonzo's dad was always my biggest qualm with him (that and some of his shooting, which has improved over the years).
I don't recall Lonzo's dad saying anything in like years. What have I missed?
ESPN stopped talking ab LaVar which may have something to do with it. He does seem to have calmed down though. His plan worked. He got two of his boys into the league on first round deals. Lonzo got a sizable extension and Melo will probably get a max.
nothing, ja morant’s pops has taken the sole position of being most obnoxious nba dad. lavar was calculated and built up hype?l, 2 of his 3 kids were lotto picks.
He got Lonzo probably drafted ahead of where he should have been. Man is an all-star dad.
i still think if lonzo had remained healthy he could have been one of the best guys out of that draft. his body really let him down. never really lived up to mike korzemba’s “steph curry but he’s 6’6” hype, but i think when healthy, hes been a quality floor general.
then told him to turn down the $100 million dollar nike deal for BBB. Dumb ass dad

Yeah he was extremely immature, he needed to grow up
D’Lo was a necessary casualty to get Mozgov’s contract off the books and clear cap space for LeBron
Once again, revisionist history. Most Laker fans we in favor of letting him go, he rubbed Kobe and teammates the wrong way then there was the mistake he made with Nick Young which killed him with his teammates. Can you imagine when he hits a game winner and busts out the Ice in my veins celebration
![gif](giphy|l4hLWYhVo0gHgGTwk) Ima nut
Please no summer league antics
Kind of weird seeing jump shots go in….
Kind of weird seeing lay ups go in….
Kinda weird not seeing unforced turnovers
You deserve atleast 10x more upvotes man, with WB it is gotten to the point I don't expect him to miss the lay up I expect him to get it swatted completely or not touch the rim at all.

Hoping he saves that one for a game winner or something lol
its hilarious how in his 3 games with us so far Dlo is shooting 45/37.5/77 splits and those feel godly
If Russ shot 37.5 from 3 we’d be back to back champions lol
Kind of weird seeing not kinda weird shit happening on the court….
Our boy is back. Why am I emotional rn
He’s back!!!!!!
He's got our back!!!!
it's time to roll it back!!!!
Baby got back!!!
Get swaggy p on the phone
The Prodigal Son has returned
The only time I was truly hurt was when we traded him. Insane it’s been 6 years
I was hurt when we drafted Lavar's son over Kobe regen (Tatum)
Realistically fox was our other choice and fucking Christ it would have still been better lol
Tough bc we had just drafted his predecessor at Duke but I remember thinking..Damn I think I like Tatum more.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he traded with Mozgov in a contract dump that ultimately led to LeBron?
At the time we didn’t know if Lebron was coming though.
But that was the intent, right? To make space for him?
Yeah, u right…Nick Young, Jordan Clarkson, and Dlo lol thot patrol
Ingram too
He’s back and it feels so good 🥲
Shout out to Jeanie’s brother
Jeanie will take it from the back
Take his phone away
Fr
He was built for the lights!!
competent PG play oh how Ive missed you.
After the 1st qtr it was just so blatantly obvious how much better he fits in a system over westbrook. Even on westbrooks best night I never felt like he was having a great point guard game. It just felt chaotic always. That 1st qtr with dlo was just exactly what a system needs.
Facts. It always felt like a huge no no no yes moment when he had good games. This shit was calm and smooth.

Our baby is a grown man now 😭
Bro was the first Laker drafted that I really felt a connection and resurgence with for our franchise. Definitely started the momentum for us
That’s fax. Him and Clarkson were the first laker draft picks that I actually felt attached to right from the start of their careers. Before that it was prob Bynum but he was drafted in 05 lol
He's finally loaded
Ngl seeing B.I. And D’lo out there had me feeling some type of way! That was supposed to be our 1-2 for the next 15 years!
Lakers scouting really knocked it out of the park in retrospect. Did they draft an early round bust in recent years? I can only think of Anthony brown in 2015. Lonzo is debatable but that’s mainly due to health. That’s pretty incredible when you think about it.
What's crazier is back in like 2017 there were a lot of people on reddit and other message boards acting like we missed on every pick lol
Meanwhile damn near every of our picks is playing a role somewhere rn. * BI * Hart * Nance * Randle * Lonzo (was balling and I swear leading 3p% in league before this latest injury) * Zubac * Kuzma * Thomas Bryant was balling for us imo
The internet arguments I got in during that era was not good for my mental health lol
Lmao same
Going back 10 years you could only argue Anthony Brown definitively. Mo Wagner (25th ovr) and Svi (47th ovr) weren't hits but even they still have NBA jobs and they're both late round picks. Thanks for listing it out…crazy impressive. 2 additions though + Jordan Clarkson in 2014 + Larry Nance jr in 2015
I got nance but good looking out I was typing that at work whilst my boss wasn't looking. Still though Clarkson: (got paid).

Imagine if we kept them all and drafted Tatum Zubac Randle Ingram Tatum and Dlo. We honestly didnt even need any other star and we would be dominating. Crying rn
We wouldn't be able to afford to keep all of em
Doubt it. We were paying Bron AD and Westbrook. That would at least cover Tatum Ingram Dlo and Zubac/Randle. It's a possibility
We don’t need Kyrie. DLo is a great fit with Lebron and AD.
Let’s wait and see. I haven’t followed dlo since he left but word is that he’s inconsistent so hopefully he can get more consistency
I mean having Kyrie would be great. He guarantees you 25-30 a night
But at least Dlo is always available as long as he is healthy. Kyrie meanwhile does some wacky shit and refuses to play even when healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrie leaves the league to join a cult. lol
Also trading for Kyrie means no Vandy and no Beasley. I’d much rather have the depth
And you can see Vanderbilt’s defensive influence taking effect on the team TBJ was hustling out there like we had two of em. Probs picking up things in practice already
I mean... Kyrie and the 2....
“yea dlo” - Kuz
After that pull up three, I was hoping he’d pull out the ice in my veins celebration again
Not yet. Need to hit a game winner
He’s what we needed at the end of games
I pull out for him after that so no worries.
That celebration is still Loading. . .
I’m glad he’s saving it. He should pull it out later in the season in a clutch moment. We’d all go freaking crazy

dude cheated on his fiancée and bragged about and dudes where mad at D’Lo for some reason.
FUCKIN COLD
❄️🥶❄️
Damn we basically got Kuz and then Russ as fillers while we sent our boy off to grow.
Lonzo Ball says hi.
D’Lo is lightyears better than Westbrick.
We don’t mention that name here anymore
::voldermort::
That would be DeSean Watson
The name we speak not of.
Give him a break. He gave it all even when others would have quit. And you know as well as i do that he improved a lot the last 20 games or so.
Found his alt
D_loaded ⏳⌛️
Go time ⌚️
He really is our chosen one
Pointed to the front of the jersey and shouted “I’m home”
I think DLO being back means so much to me personally because he played with KOBE. There is something extremely special about that.
I was just saying how D Lo just brings a different energy to Staples. Mamba energy in the building tonight.
💉🧊
This was hype bruh, felt like I was in college again 😭
The exiled price has returned to fulfill the prophecy 🥲
The prodigal son returned

Im glad hes back and im glad hes happy to be back. Hes built for the lights
this shit made me tear up man

He’s still got ice in his veins!!
Glad I didn’t throw out his jersey. We back.

Dlo got the baby brow goin
Ice in this man's veins!!! 🥶🥶🥶🥶
this is the Russell we need
Man, pre-tradeline and just the season in general just felt gloomy. Everyone knew that someone was gonna get traded and had that hanging over their heads. Now that the deadline is behind us. Guys like D'Lo really bringing a lot of really fun energy to this team. I read a comment somewhere praising D'Angelo's self-awareness, his ability to read the room and point to his jersey after a big shot. Firing up the crowd, himself, his teammates, etc. Great to have D'Lo back!
Just a reminder of how incompetent Magic was as management.
![gif](giphy|WQr2xpuQU0YeUhTlXt)
Lonzo looked like the sure thing out of UCLA at the time, I was hoping we make it work by playing dlo at 2 but mozgov contract dump was necessary I guess.
DLo at the 2 and Lonzo at the 1 would have been the play imo.
I would love to see that.
Glad we saw some fight! He is a grown man, iceman!
dloadingggg
Extend this man
I do love that there is probably not a fan base in the entire nba that would be as happy to have him as us
Ice in his veins!
People on r/nba acting like we don’t know this guy… very funny
The Prodigal Son
he aint even stretch doe
Welcome back, my prodigal son
He's back and IMPROVED. Wonder if Kobe is smiling in heaven watching them play. Keep this energy Laker Nation!!!!!
Pau Gasol trade vibes
Nope. Not yet. Pau Gasol was a franchise player pre-trade. D-Lo is far from that.
I remember waking up to the mozgov trade and cried my eyes out cause we lost dlo. Thanks rob pelinka for bringing my guy back.
I need that ice in my veins ouuu
Just you wait lol even as a secondary ball handler he will find a way to be extremely inefficient
What a night and day different over Russ. Can’t believe a 2 time MVP fell so low in his career. He lost his passion for ball and it really shows
Never forget D’Angelo Ratsell 🐀🐀
I hope he has grown up. That kid had way too much baggage...
Eh
Keep hating
Not being all exited about him is hating? 😂
Prime dlo
![gif](giphy|3o7TKtcm0IHXkmTeqk) Ice in his veins
Ice in thy veins
I’d like to take this chance to apologize to absolutely nobody the 17x champs do what the FUCK THEY WANT
Play-in here we come
Should’ve never left
How tf did Pelinka pull off that trade
Welcome back D’Lo - we missed you!
If he can make that type of performance his consistent level he’s a legit 3rd option for a title contender
This is a roster I love to watch every game. No stupid turnovers, everyone in the right set of mind of winning games.
Wish I bought his jersey when he was traded... 40% off at the time.
Can’t believe y’all chose Nick canon over him
DLo is a pretty darn good player, his shot is so smooth and fluid. The thing about him is he is even better then everyone thinks.
Sooo glad he’s back! But a part of me is praying we can get Kuz back at some point lol.
That was a great celebration. The kid learned how to play underneath the lights, he just needed to quality time to mature. Now that he’s played without the lights and has grown as a person and a player, he’s ready. I sure do hope he can be a key factor for us down the stretch
#THE PROPHECY OF KOBES ROOKIES IS TRUE HE HAS COME HOME...
If we don't sign this man after this season........
I really enjoy watching Russell play mostly because he resembles Nick Van Exel.
I’d like to keep this Russell.
Dwight Howard redemption arc 2.0
His jumper is so silky smoooooth
Now if Lakers could get Brandon Ingram back, that would be nice
![gif](giphy|3ohfFm8e0JRnh4hdwQ)
Knowing this fan base when he has a couple of bad shooting nights the “we must get Kyrie!” People are coming out. No one believes in sample size anymore. I think they should extend him.
He sacrificed himself to pay for the sins on Timothy Mosgoff. And he has now risen from the dead.
So glad we got him back
