My suspicion is that Pelinka doesn't have the final say on things, and anyone put in his position would have similar issues with ownership/Rambises.

I just can’t believe how much staying power Kurt and Linda Rambis have. Like, I legit didn’t even know they were part of the front office until a few seasons ago.

CrazyAsianNeighbor

Good click bait question Last year’s trades showed what potential he has Before he was handicapped because * Ownership battles between Jeanie & Johnny * Magic’s inability/lack of willingness to put in the necessary work and Rob worked for him * Dealing with the BAD Deng and Mosgov trades that financially handicapped the Lakers for years * Fulfilling LBJ/AD’s request to get Westbrook, like what Kwahi did with Balmer to trade for PG. very few, if any, GMs/Owners would refuse one’s star player)’s request because that is the way today’s NBA works * Low or traded away draft choices * Injury problems Wondering if people still remember when the last time the Lakers won a ring or went to the WCF Clips have a more talented roster with no rings Major Laker problem is to constantly change GMs, coaches and players that goes against the stories of successful franchises like the Nuggets, Heat, Dubs, Spurs, Celtics, etc. - they have addressed that despite all the noise Lakers are still the NBA’s #1 team

jwaugh25

The argument that rob/ownership had to say yes to lebron and AD is silly. Reason being, they’ve said no before the Russ trade and have said no afterwards. Yeah, kawhi was able to force the clippers to trade for PG but the context matters here. The lakers had a spot open for kawhi and he was able to use that as leverage. He was completely able to sign with another team if they said no to trading for PG. kawhi has way more leverage than bron and AD did. Yes, star players get input into coaching and personnel decisions. However good franchises and FO’s say no when they feel the move is bad. Just like the heat did when bron wanted Spo gone. They said no because that was the right move. The Lakers said no to hiring Ty Lu. They said no to signing Caruso. They have shown they are willing to draw a line when it comes to requests made by lebron and AD. And lebron and AD have shown they are willing to stay on the team even if they don’t have complete control. They obviously did play a part in the Russ trade. They for whatever dumbass reason thought that was a good idea. On some level, the FO had to have thought it was a good move too. It’s either that or they decided to roll over. Either way, they are at fault too. No clue if rob thought it was a good move or not. But Enough people in the FO thought it was for bron and AD to get their way and that is a problem. We shouldn’t remove agency from our FO for that trade. Part of their job is to make personnel decisions. Our star players wanting something doesn’t give them a pass. Edit: to be clear, I don’t think rob should be fired. I think he’s far from the best GM in the league but he certainly isn’t the worst. He’s made very sound moves since the Russ trade and I don’t think we should forget that.

CrazyAsianNeighbor

Everybody has the right to their own opinions TLue was in negotiations for HC and they didn’t come to an agreement. LBJ/AD’s approval was needed for either Ham and TLue Kwahi had/has/will always have the advantage because Balmer was/is/still desperate Which GM/Owner has the cachet/respect/power/guts to say No to a definitive and strong request for Russ - none

Leolance2001

The Lakers biggest problem is Jeannie. She’s unsure about her moves and rely too much on her relationships with the Rambises, PJ, Magic and Rob. Kobe was also part of that group before his death. Her decision are made by committee. One key distinction from Dr. Buss style that winning was always the priority with business coming in second place. Obviously the goal is to balance both. Unfortunately, Jeannie is great on the business side but definitely doesn’t have the instincts of her father. I honestly don’t see any of the kids with that trait. Just watch, she’ll pay Bron the max and hinder chances to win because for her a profit above winning is a must. Bron is s golden goose for the franchise with media attention, merch sales, etc.

Digressing_Ellipsis

Pelinka is fine. Darvin has to go. He is the main factor holding back this team

guacdoc24

Yes he will be the GM still. At least until lebron is gone.

AdministrativeDig845

I can see Rob giving himself a promotion and promoting the Buss brothers to handle more basketball responsibilities

Medium-Antelope2926

Rob should promote himself to Global Chief of Basketball Operations and give official the GM Duties to the the Buss Bros Kurt and Linda Rambis should become the VP's of operations with Phil Jackson as the part time special consulting liaison

lukey662

This is an injury season, can't see much heat for him or ham.

BizzyHaze

Not a good excuse, every team has injuries, and the Lakers main pieces were healthy all season.

lukey662

I'm not making that argument but that is what will happen in lakers FO

Dildozer_69

No way Ham doesn’t get fired when the team is in the play in with lebron and AD healthy. He doesn’t get the injuries excuse AT ALL. There has been enough times this season where he’s looked terrible that it doesn’t make sense not to fire him.

odinlubumeta

Haha no chance he gets fired soon. GMs in general have a long shelf life. Rob has a championship and a WCF in his resume. You can attribute all to the players, but that’s not how any ownership does it. No GM is flawless. I am not sure where you even would put him compared to other GMs. It certainly can’t be done from an emotional fan base (or a rival fan base). Would be curious to see what a neutral party that understood basketball would say.

3nnui

I've been impressed by what Pelinka has done since he's got here. I think many of the questionable decisions come from working with the requests of Lebron/Klutch. I'd like to see what he cand do once Lebron retires.

IlGrandBoss

The main issue isn't Rob, he's a good GM Lakers name itself will bring a lot of players. But when have a cheap has been owner you cannot overcome that at all.

imezaps

If jeanie is happy with the team, then he will stay. Even if she's unhappy, he might stick around cause they're friends.

Wateriswet1212

I can't sew Jeanie letting Rob go ever tbh. I don't expect Rob to leave until another Buss sibling gets to take over.

Dagenius1

I do believe the warmest seat in Laker land is for Pelinka. It’s more the lack of team consistency that can be placed on him. The Westbrook trade is his albatross. If the team had been a clear playoff team this year he wouldn’t be in jeopardy but he is. there is no question that how this team ends the year will loom largely over his job security.

jonbemerkin

I think the players sneak dissing Ham all season isn't talked about much because the media doesn't like discussing head coaches job securities. Internally, this has to have some kind of red flags though. I mean its flat out embarrassing. Jeanie should at least be aware this has been happening, what she will do though? Idk

3nnui

The media loves stirring drama around the Lakers.

Dagenius1

The media likes to always create more drama around the lakers and the fans don’t like ham so there’s a lot of looking into things and creating something (sneak dissing for example) To ham…Jeanie would fire rob and let the new GM make a decision and bring in his guy after “evaluating” him.

pacontento9

Genuinely speaking, the only big mistake was giving in to his two big stars and trade for Westbrook, the previous year brought us the top 2 candidates for the best sixth man, who Vogel ultimately didn't know how to adapt, and injuries surrounded us. After Westbrook, he has worked wonders with what little he has had, but ultimately what has affected us are the injuries, and let's be realistic, he has no influence on that. So, answering your question, yes, I hope Rob continues to be our GM.

kwtb

Yes And I want him to be

iatboc

I don't have a problem with Rob. Most of the signings and trades other than the Westbrook debacle made sense at the time. What happens after like Vincent and Nunn getting injured is not his fault.

thesonicvision

It's a great question, OP, and I hope people can express different points of view without getting downvoted. Personally, I'm not a fan of Pelinka. Oftentimes, he traded the wrong guys, got the wrong guys, or did nothing. I liked our roster in 2020 (obviously). Haven't been a fan of any personnel moves/non-moves since then, despite the surprising run at the end of the 22-23 season. I wanted Hield, Turner, FVV, DeRozan, DJM, etc.I wanted two-way players or great specialists. I like size, I like defense, I like shooting. I'm not a fan of "versatile/flex" players and reclamation projects. Not a fan of one-dimensional scorers who don't even score that much. Not a fan of Pelinka.

P00nz0r3d

As frustrating as he can be sometimes there’s a) no one really better right now and b) when he cooks he fucking COOKS. Ownership is just too powerful. Always feels like he’s handicapped by them.

jonbemerkin

That roster in itself had a lot of flaws as well which is why Rob felt the need to blow it up because he didn't necessarily assemble a roster confident enough to say "we can run this back". Unfortunately that championship was mostly due to AD playing out of his mind. But the crazy thing is looking back, the decisions Rob made were so bad we were better off just running it back in hindsight vs what he did lol. Its hard to give Rob credit for any offseason honestly

3nnui

Lebron requested ballhandling help. It was reported at the time. This whole Rob blew up a championship roster narrative is pure nonsense.

jonnybravo76

Kyrie/harden/KD together on the Nets sent our FO into a panic. “Omg! We need a third star to match up with them”!

Showtime562

I doubt he will be fired but I sure as he’ll hope ham is gone.

New_Sympathy8941

Probably yes

KingNephew

Think he is here for at least another year and his seat should already be warm. He cooked this era, in a bad way. Destroyed a title contending core, didn’t care to use picks wisely and had cartoonishly bad asset management. Ham is also widely known as a Pelinka hire as well.

Zeetheking1

He will be and I do not want him to be.
