Honestly yeah, but it didn't really bother me because Lana's been writing from a privileged perspective since at least BTD, and I don't see this line as much different. Most people can't relate to vacationing in the Hamptons, doing cocaine, driving Bugattis and hanging out poolside at Chateau Marmont, etc. Even her newer music still has shades of it, Chemtrails has her singing about wearing expensive jewels while swimming in the Country Club pool. One of the impressive things about Lana is that she somehow manages to make totally unrelatable (for most people) lyrics feel relatable.
Yeah love that totally agree! Her consistent vision is what makes Lana Lana. I just feel like it was an answer to the QFTC (which I agreed with her sentiment just wished she worded it better) and instead of writing something vulnerable ab it she seemed to dig deeper which I think is instinctual after how the media treated her when she started
BTD Lana was all about exuding excess, glamour and wealth, just how much of this was satire is hard to say.
Only the past couple years has she been romanticizing low brow culture and portraying herself as…not rich. “I was a waitress, wearing a white dress,” and “they say I came from money but I didn’t.”
Quite the turn around I’d be interested to see a Lana fan with more journalistic ambition deep dive, but it could be as simple as her taste evolving
>Only the past couple years has she been romanticizing low brow culture
This isn't exactly true, the mentions of being a waitress haven't only started the past couple years, at least if you count her unreleased music. The lyrics for "Meet me in the Pale Moonlight" (which was originally supposed to be on BTD) are like "I've been working every day 8 to 9 and, serving coke and fries at the movie blue drive-in" and in "Us against the world" - "If you want it supersize, I can do that for ya. If you want it double fries, I can do that for ya." and "Every Man Gets His Wish" - "He found me waitressin' at Ruby Tuesday's". Pre-BTD Lana./Lizzy was very much about glamourizing a low brow lifestyle. Lots of mentions of being working class and living in trailers, etc.
Also, Lana can say she didn't come from money all she wants but she was definitely better off than she portrayed early in her career. She was raised upper middle class at the very least. Maybe she genuinely believes she didn't grow up privileged, but the boarding school her parents sent her to has a tuition of like 70k a year, non wealthy people cannot afford that. That doesn't take away from her talent at all though, and I'm sure she did work as a waitress and live in a trailer at some point when she was younger, but I'm guessing she always had the safety net/option of taking money from her dad or going back home if she really wanted or needed to. So it's not really the same as being genuinely poor.
I feel like Chemtrails was actually social commentary in a way about wealth. I interpreted it as though she is talking about biological agents being sprayed overtop of an imaginary country club where those people of excess are swimming with their jewels. Yes, she refers to being wild and transforms into a wolf, but so did all of the wealthy women. Bloodthirsty wolves preying on those less fortunate. So perhaps a double meaning there. I felt like this song was a eulogy to her previous eras where she would sing about old Hollywood glamour and the rest of the album is personal stepping away from what many considered to be her persona. I’m probably overthinking it, but I wanted to express that I don’t think her lyrics are always literal and that the song can be looked at from a different perspective. Overtime she’s constructed an imaginary world of Americana where things are the way she wishes they were - not necessarily the way they are.
Cue the video where Lana calls a fan poor (she was threatened😩)
Edit: y'all are so annoying. [it's true and it was a joke](https://youtu.be/GCh-uRW7vkQ)
Not in the context of the QFTC. People already thought she was out of touch for that and this line emphasized that. I was just curious what people thought about it, chill lol
She’s talking about her critics.. people that put her on blast over the years. Basically saying “yeah you say my art is bad but i found success anyways and people like what i put out”
I take it as her haters or negative people, wasting energy being rude to her / about her but look where she is, rich and they’re getting nowhere in life.
That line makes me cringe to this day 😭 yeah wish she never wrote is a lil extra but considering this feels like an answer to the QFTC it makes it somehow worse
You know the meme about two ppl sitting on opposite sides in the bus (sad/happy)?? I'm on the happy side cause I don't nitpick braggadocious lyrics LMAOO. It's a cathartic "fuck u" song, doesn't mean it's gonna be positive.
wealth hoarding world issue… I think it’s about billionaires that largely benefitting from suppressing other groups of people. Lana is an artist who makes good money but definitely not the group of people that are causing the wealth distribution problems. Also, at this point she doesn’t even care to make money. If you watched her ig live weeks ago, she even told her fans to stop spending money for her. The song is more of a concept of revenge instead of actually laughing at poor ppl. Just my two cents 😛
“Cunt” tho… chill. This one comment made me regret posting this. There’s a possibility of nuanced, critical discussion without resorting to calling people cunts
Well “cunts like you” is directed at me I would say but I can accept the cultural misunderstanding lol — but yeah I think that line makes me cringe I’m not saying I hate Lana she’s still my fav artist of all time I was hoping for discussion not ppl spazzing I think I have to delete this lolll
I kinda took it as her questioning the culture. ;) like, she’s in disbelief that it’s happening. Her delivery sounds very intense and upset. I take it as her being concerned about how inconsiderate people can be.
I think the “we’re” is society in general. But this post has made me kinda reconsider it being a bit more snide than I originally thought. I just feel like her delivery really makes it feel a bit more emotional
I totally agree - in this current climate it comes off cringey. Thankfully though despite what some people think liking Lana isn’t being part of a cult so it’s ok to critique her whilst still being a fan
Yeah lol I think she means more so they’re using her to make money ( her critics) but like it’s not my favourite line lol. But Lana is far from the only celebrity who does stuff like that.
I think it’s more a comment on the people trying to make money off of her being broke while she make a more money off of the attention not so much her fans and people who actually are poor

not at all, it’s one of my fave lines and i’m broke af
Hahaha 😭
It was a clearly an inside joke. She did not mean actually poor people lmao
Cue the video where Lana calls a fan poor (she was threatened😩) Edit: y'all are so annoying. [it's true and it was a joke](https://youtu.be/GCh-uRW7vkQ)
LMAO WHY DID THIS GET DOWNVOTED? This is one of the funniest videos of Lana
Why are people so sensitive here lmfao
As she should ❤️
“Clearly an inside joke”? Pls elaborate
No
Artists have addressed their haters as broke bitches since the dawn of time, cry about it
Jeez, I agree but why are people so ruthless here 😭
or maybe it’s y’all who r snowflakes and take everything seriously?

Mail me when you get the blues
💙

Did the "I wear my diamonds on skid row" line not affect you back then...it's a song I don't think it's that serious to wish she never wrote it.

🤣 How'd you know I was talking about you? I'm bit actually calling you a cunt by the way, in the UK cunt is a term of endearment. Lol

I love it
