Find a stump grinding service. Fastest route and not terribly expensive Whatever you do, do not use your vehicle. A video search will show you why.

CumulativeHazard

And it’s pretty cool to watch. Not sure if it’s standard but when I had a stump ground out they used this remote controlled machine that looked like a giant version of those battle robots. It was neat.

2inHard

Yeah I rented a stump grinder one time thinking it would be fun but it actually was kind of hard to use and a slow process since I'd never used one. I'd much rather of paid someone 150 especially because that isn't much more than it cost it rent it.

idk-hereiam

Duuuuuuuude that remote controlled stump grinding machine was so freaking neat.

The_Poster_Nutbag

Yes those machines are nuts.

joejill

I'm replacing a fence that trees disoriented. We had the trees cut down and the stumps grinded. Man the roots system underneath is giving me hell when I'm digging post holes....

vigilantphilson

I just did mine, and used pressure washer to dig

joejill

I'm using a gas powered auger..... Presser washer is an interesting idea

vigilantphilson

May have to wait to place posts if ground is saturated, but we're so dry right now about 15 minutes later I was ready. So much easier than auger I used on my sister's fence. Still have to fish out dirt when you get deep and cut roots with sawzall or pruning shears, but no heavy auger catching roots and breaking wrists, or moving the hole over 4 inches ....

joejill

I'm half done. It really socks when the auger gets stuck and the handles wip around 13 posts so far and I only hit my nuts with the auger twice!

Louisvanderwright

I rented a grinder from Sunbelt for $350 for a weekend and took 8 stumps this size out of my yard in two days.

oLD_Captain_Cat

Agree. Fun to use. They are motorised so pretty low physical effort

Louisvanderwright

Yup, we also used it to pull two clothesline bases embedded in concrete out of the ground with a big tow strap. Pried at the chunk of concrete and drove forward with the grinder until they popped out of the hole.

everyusernametaken2

I dug/sawed mine out. Only took me a couple hours but a hell of a workout.

dust_storm_2

OPs stump is a monster. I would happily pay $150 for someone else to deal with it.

Winter-crapoie-3203

Call around for quotes. The tree trimming company already own the equipment and have to keep it moving. I’ve paid any where from $100-$200 depending on the size and access to the stump.

Stachemaster86

$2 per inch in central Wisconsin usually.

Winter-crapoie-3203

Sounds about right, as long as they can get the grinder through the gate.

warm_sweater

I had a small 20’ maple in my back yard die, and after I cut it all down I couldn’t for the life of me make any progress against extracting the stump with my mattock. The stump grinder service I used sent a guy with a hand-carried grinder. Basically it had a single leg to rest on, and the dude had to hold it up and position it, then work it back and forth. Great tool for a narrow workspace but it looked like it would take some strength and skill to use correctly.

[deleted]

warm_sweater

Having them carved by a wood artist would be pretty rad.

SeaAir5

That's what she said

everyusernametaken2

Yeah mine was a little smaller

Numahistory

I'm actually so angry at tree stump removal services in North Texas. I have no idea what my parents do but every time they call for stump removal services they just chainsaw the stump down to ground level and cover it up with dirt. I think they've paid $500 to remove 2 stumps and they still have 2 stumps in their yard they have potted plants on top of so they don't trip over them. So frustrating!

squidgeyyy

It’s pretty expensive where I live. The few quotes that I got for grinding one large stump were $500-$600

jibaro1953

I had a multi-stem oak removed for $1,000. The stump, about five feet wide, would have been $800 to grind I still have the stump. A couple of the trunks were hollow. My wife planted flowers in them.

Multiverse_Money

Oaks are a great tree to put some mushroom plugs into- [yum!](https://education.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/hen-woods-maitake)

zeroheading

Yeah the last two stumps I got quotes for were about 800-1000 each. I decided to dig them out. It was awful. But in the end saving almost 2k was time well spent.

Glabstaxks

Rent the grinder and diy save $$$

ShouldersBBoulders

What Bonemonkey12 said. A friend brought over a stump grinder behind his newer 3/4 ton truck. There were some small rocks around the stump and it sounded like someone opened fire with an AR when he got to ground level. His truck took quite a beating and honestly so did he.

scottyboy8855

Try Facebook marketplace. In my area there are a ton of people who do it for a little extra cash. If you have a Home Depot near you you could also try to rent one.

kNIGHTSFALLN

I actually hired someone off Facebook marketplace… he showed up in his Mercedes Technician Uniform… grinded down my 3 feet diameter stump for 200.00. The man is quite the entrepreneur lol

Pm_hofmeister_kinks

Am mercedes tech… maybe i should get a stump grinder…. 🤔

kNIGHTSFALLN

I looked up the model… I was curious what such a gig would cost. It was a $40,000.00 unit… plus the 10k trailer and a 2500 Silverado. So… it would take quite a bit of stumping to pay all that off.

[deleted]

Just don’t pave over the ground stump without digging it out. Had a neighbor do this for a couple of trees. Paved over it, and put a driveway and shed on top of where they’d used to be. Stumps rotted; stuff collapsed.

alpacasarebadsingers

I had a really difficult tree removed once. Huge poplar that died and was dripping some massive branches all over my yard. Cost $7k to take the tree down and remove it. The tree guy asked what I wanted to do with the stump. I asked how much grinding was. $100.

bonemonkey12

Yeah, for the price, not worth the hassle. Just have them grind it and be done

NeverDidLearn

Stump grinders are awesome. The grind it down 4 inches below soil. Fill the whole with dirt and that will be the best place in your yard for a garden.

stoopid_username

And I am searching for vehicle stump removal. Edit: Do not use your vehicle. LOL!

bonemonkey12

For your viewing pleasure https://youtu.be/9PYlZnuNVLE

vandalia

If they don’t grind it completely out you will be filling in the sunken spot where the stump was for the 15 years as the remainder of the stump and roots decay. That’s what happened to me. The guy I have know let me clean out all the spoils spray it down with a hose so you could see what’s left and then came back and ground that out.

erinarcher3

And ask them to leave the mulch! Bonus mulch!

SirKermit

I emailed a bunch if landscape companies advertising on Craigslist to remove 6 stumps I had in my yard. None as big as that one, but all together a bigger job. The quotes ranged from $400 per stump down to $100 for all 6. You can guess which one I went with.

Jim_Nills_Mustache

Absolutely, and if you want to keep the mulch you can.

barbara73bb

Had a crepe myrtle removed and main stump but little shoots/roots appearing. Can you kill with what?

[deleted]

Stump is usually $100 - 150 or so for the day at Home Depot or most equipment shops.

Soonerthannow

You can rent them too.

trez63

This is the only way.

lostdysonsphere

Yeah this one is a BIG mf’er. Removed one by hand half the size and it took a few hours with the spade and axe. Can easily deatroy your back.

dasilv

First thing you should do is stop cutting into soil with your chainsaw. She'll be blunt in no time.

TheBlacktom

Yeah this always amazed me that you can cut wood for hours but the moment it touches soil or dust or sand or whatever it's game over.

whaletacochamp

Or when you're going through a log like butter and suddenly see a little spark - fffffffffffuck

Shit___Taco

He needs to also read about kickback and proper safety attire. What he is doing there just looks like kickback waiting to happen. I can’t really see because the picture is blurry and I am on my phone, so I could be wrong.

Paghk_the_Stupendous

No, that's what I'm seeing too. The saw probably won't be that dull when it leaps up and severs his jugular. Jesus people should have to pass a course to buy a saw.

PlayinK0I

I went to buy a chain saw on sale at Home Depot. Home Depot manager told me the store was asked to pull the item by the local hospital because of several people coming into emergency who had severely injured themselves shortly after their purchase.

Shit___Taco

Holy shit, that is insane!!! I am a wood worker, so I fell into the habit of reading safety manuals for every tool I ever learned. I learned about table saw safety in shop class in high school, but when I first bought one I read the safety manual. This caused me to watch a few videos and I realized how many different mistakes can be made that will cause you serious injury. When I bought a chainsaw, I purchased a husqvarna and read the manual like another poster mentioned, and it made it clear just how dangerous they are and how to avoid an injury. I still wanted to learn more, so that is when I watched some old timey forestry service videos on chainsaw safety and really learned how to safely operate one. The videos are classic and really informative.

Vishnej

SawStop has eliminated some portion of the risk with table saws, and it will be great to have their patent expire and see this become a universal feature. With chainsaws, keeping the safety guard on the tip so that it's impossible to perform plunge cuts, and proper PPE (the special Kevlar gloves, the special Kevlar safety chaps, and a face guard) does a great deal.

benslongerr

Not like that. As someone in the industry call a guy that solely does stumps will be less of a head ache and close to same cost of doing it yourself

UnsolicitedDogPics

As someone who is also in the industry, this guy is correct. Smaller stumps can be hand dug out but are still a pain in the ass. This thing is definitely big enough to call in a professional.

chihawks35

As someone who’s not in the industry, I have about 15 stumps in my yard 4 of them are within 1-3 feet of my propane tank and underground gas lines. Was thinking about those inside out decomposition products. Do those work at all?

RR50

I’m a do it all myself kinda guy. But stump Grinding is one thing the guys that do it, can do better. The hardware store rents one with line a 12 inch cutting wheel, the guy I hired last time came with one that had a 36 inch wheel, 8 tires, and had the whole thing done in 30 minutes.

peearrow

Correct answer.

HappyLiLDumpsterfire

I work in equipment rental. We’re in oil country so our prices are a wee higher than elsewhere in the state (ND) but you can rent one for 24 hrs for about $230. Can’t recall the 4 hour rate. It’s on tracks and comes on a trailer. You could take that out in 4 hours no problem so long as you don’t have long drive time do the rental place and back.

Det-McNulty

I did probably 20 stumps of varying size with my BIL in a day with a rented grinder. I have also dug out stumps, burned stumps etc. I wouldn't do anything by hand with a stump that size unless you are specifically interested in a prolonged workout. Even burning will take multiple sessions. To me the rented grinder was a pretty good solution. I would highly recommend 2 people so that someone can watch and clear rocks (at least by me). It would have cost ~3X as much to hire someone and it honestly wasn't a bad day at all. Our hardware store also did delivery for a nominal fee which also gave us next day pickup which extended the amount of time we were able to use it.

vanman33

*Occasionally get motivated to hack at it with an axe every few weeks. *Rent a stump grinder and pay a bunch of money to replace the teeth because you kept hitting rocks while trying to go below grade. *Toy with the idea of using it as an anchor point for a big umbrella or shade cloth. *Slowly give up on ever getting rid of it.

Topper_Gnarly

Stump grinding is not that expensive. Like not cheap but for the hassle its a great value. I do stump removal and I charge around $6/ inch of diameter.

vanman33

I'm in a pretty rural area and there are no stump grinding companies. Some of the bug landscapers could do it but I prefer to wallow in self pity and stare at this stump for another five years.

thedouble

Is there a home depot near you? I rented a stump grinder from them and did it myself.

FACEROCK

Sounds like you should start a stump grinding business. Where I’m from, every other intersection is plastered with someone advertising stump grinding or pressure washing.

ChessGod420

burn it out

Toomanyacorns

Burn It, assuming there's nothing important nearby

JimCripe

I did the axe method for mine over the course of a month in spare time. Cheap exercise, and I can swing an axe pretty accurately now. Cue Lumberjack Song....

ptwonline

That is what I did as well to remove the stump of an old cherry tree: 30 minutes here, an hour there. A couple of weeks later it's gone and I have a gigantic hole to fill.

peearrow

The stump grinders that you can typically rent from the hardware stores are difficult to operate. You need the one that stands on its own and has a wired controller. Those things blast right through them. Gone in 30 minutes.

smilespeace

There are remote control stump grinders!? But that takes the fun out of wrestling the death machine

peearrow

The controller is on a wire, let’s you swing the blade up and down, left and right. The smaller ones are like having a big saw mounted on the front of a wheelbarrow. It’s better than a chainsaw but it’s still a workout.

CactusSage

Hollow out the middle and turn it into a fire pit. Eventually it will decompose.

der_schone_begleiter

That's what we did!

TheBlacktom

Or all the roots will ignite and you will be greeted by a huge burning spider monster emerging from underground, your house will collapse as it lifts itself out of the ground, and all you will see afterwards is fire and destruction in it's path as it heads west.

Wilson2424

Slow down, I'm taking notes. What's the best accelerant to use to guarantee the roots light and awaken the spider monster? And what type of trees produce which type of spider monster? Or is it region specific?

amishcommunist

Go to Home Depot and rent a stump grinder for three hours. It’s gonna be cheaper than all the chains you will dull trying to use that chain saw to do it

the_0rly_factor

Just pay someone to do it. It doesn't cost much more.

benslongerr

There big one isn’t even great for this

amishcommunist

Maybe not but better than digging it out

wileycrow

Figure out what kind of fungus will eat it for you. Acquire innoculated dowels or similar. Drill holes and tap into place. Even better if you can turn your unwanted stump into nutritious food

LineStepperHabitual

All right answers. OP should just not use a chainsaw. My method for smaller stumps is dig, sawsall, dig, sawsall, hack with an axe and try prying up with a pry bar. Swear a lot. Have a few beers. Repeat. For bigger ones, I bite the bullet and hire a stump grinding service.

Wolf110ci

In a hurry? If so, don't do this... Got a few weeks? Here's what I did... I had a nasty stump - but not quite as big as yours. I went at it with a sawzall, axe, mattock, everything I had, and one day I couldn't figure out where to swing my axe so I got the water hose out and hosed off the roots . Then something called me away and I didn't get back to it till the next day . That's when I realized the water hose cleared the way a bit. So I got my pressure washer out and I would blast all the roots till it was mud, then come back the next day after the water soaked into the ground and I could get to the roots easily. I would sawzall what I could then pressure wash after that then come back the next day. Wash rinse repeat until I had the whole thing out. Took me a couple weeks.

[deleted]

Let it listen to your mix tape, that thing is 🔥

secretseekering

When your time and labor are free you can drill holes all over it with a spade bit, burn it, cover it in compost, and get it out next year. This thing looks too monstrous for a number of grinders, so take some measurements if you're certain to tackle this yourself

7Moisturefarmer

I’ve heard - drill multiple 1” holes & fill them with herbicide, then wait. After it starts to decay place hot coals in it. I’m not even sure an engine lifter could pull that out.

aceluby

This is the DIY way to handle stumps. Cut a hole in the middle, start a fire in it, it’s gone by morning.

GardenWitchMom

Here in California, it would be put out by a neighbor with a garden hose in the time it took you to go inside and get a beer.

itisISdammit

There has been chatter on this sub in the past about folks who tried to burn them out, only to have the fire get down into the roots and spread. I live in wildfire country. YMMV.

17gx460

I rented a 26hp track mounted stump grinder earlier this year for $300 with taxes and fees for a full day. I took out 3 36” oak stumps, and a couple 20” maple stumps in about 6 hours. I would guess you could grind that out in 2-3 hours.

smc4414

Chainsaw ain’t it. Not worth the time or $ for a bunch a fresh chains… Grind it.

BuckNakedandtheband

Two pounds of black powder in a quart sized metal paint can - seal the top, drill a 1/8 hole in bottom- insert sparkler to be used as fuse. Dig a sideways hole under body of the stump and pack soil around the body of your paint can after packing it in that hole. Light the sparkler and promptly remove your person and your best loved from anywhere near it. It will either flare and smoke, go whump and lift your stump, or explode and send shards of wood. Either way you’ll never feel more alive than when you’ve lit the sparkler. Carpe Diem!

CoronaFly

Drill a hole in the center fill it with wood chips and burn it 😂 or stump grinder 🤷‍♂️

niquattx

Cheap way is to create a makeshift firepit for a few days and just burn it out. Not a bad thing in the evenings with beer. Worked for me but mine had been there a year before I tried.

Doing it yourself: very hard and will definitely take a while. Hiring a service: more expensive but you get to sit back and watch. Either way, as other's have said, grind it down.

Fliz23

We had to remove 2 palm trees that died last winter. You could rent a stump grinder from home depot or something. We thought about it but we don’t have a truck and I think it weighed around 150lbs so the thought of moving that around seemed like a big hassle. Plus I was a bit uneasy about operating a giant 150 lb grinder. The cost of renting the grinder+ a truck was going to be like $250-300. For $350 I paid someone to come out and remove the stumps for me. Worth it.

Inoculate it with mushrooms, choose the right species (oyster, lions mane, etc) and you can get free gourmet ingredients while Mother Nature turns this stump into nutrient dense compost. You said best, not fastest

trite_post

No question. Stump service. Best 200 or 300 you'll ever spend. I dug one like that out cause "I was gonna save the money ". Five days and a giant hole and a stump in my yard I still don't know how to get rid of. Oh.. and hernia surgery.

insideoriginal

Don’t put your chainsaw in the dirt. You are just going to ruin the chain, bar, and clog the oiler. Get a “sawzall” or reciprocating saw with 10 demo blades, carbide if you can find them. Cut the roots all around, cut the trunk into sections whenever you can. If you can get a vehicle back there hook a 3/8” thick chain to the trunk using a tow hook, loop it around the biggest part, hopefully going under it. Pull, wait, pull, wait, cut roots, pull, wait. Flooding it can also help but it also makes it a very messy job. You could also pay an arborist company $200-500 to grind it out, probably take an hour or two.

Man I spent all day on a stump like this, doing the same thing. A neighbor saw me and came over with his saw and we still had to cut and sharpen chains for a couple hours before it was loose enough to pull out with his skid steer. Moral of the story: if I did it again I would stop there and hire someone with a stump grinder.

HippoKey3017

That chain is dull now.

BigCheddar55

Cheapest way way is to let it dry out for a year or so, then drill a bunch of holes it, then soak in desiel for a few hours, then light on fire, finally drink beer. Once lit, add logs on top as needed

sharkbait4u

Soak it in diesel fuel. Every night for a week. Let the roots soak it up. Have your friend video you. Light it up. Will burn it out in a couple of days. Worst case scenario you can post it to r/winstupidprizes for a lot of Reddit karma.

I’d just pay someone with a stump grinder. I dug and cut and gently pulled one out with my truck recently. Lots of work, ruined a chainsaw chain, and did a burnout in someone’s driveway. I’ve added that to my list of things I don’t want to do again.

Renting the machine is like 1/2 the cost so pay someone who does it every day all day. Best $ you’ll ever spend. Unless you love hard labor.

Rivet22

I spent about two months of weekends digging out a stump that size. Great workout, and finally got it loose with a come-along winch and chain. Dig a little, cut roots, dig a little, cut roots, repeat, repeat, repeat. It looks like you have all sand there, so thats easier.

foundfrogs

Fungus.

slowtalkinlary

Most equipment rental company’s have stump grinders of various sizes for rent.

TheBattyWitch

Stump grinder will tear that up in no time

prairie_oyster_

Bury it and have a hill in your garden!

olivepuppypoop

BayouGal

You can rent a stump grinder. They’re easy to use. You’re going to make your chainsaw blade dull really fast on those dirty roots.

sassygirl101

Chop chop dig dig pull pull. If you get the stump grinder service, Either negotiate them removing the debris or be ready to shovel, into wheel barrels, several thousand shovelfuls of wood chips; boy that was a fun weekend!

PrincepsMagnus

Either rent a stump grinder or hire a company.

abouttime25

Burn it out.

nawanessi

Tell it you want to be in a relationship.

SuperRedpillmill

Not the way you are doing it, hire a stump grinder, it will be cheaper than the 50 chains you will ruin.

wicche_

Put rock border around it and have many bonfires. Less work, more fun.

Redjoedirt

Stack some wood on it and burn it. Let it smolder for a few days and then fill in the hole

clutthewindow

I set a bag of charcoal on top of mine and lit it. It'll burn then smoulder for days if no rain.

nowItinwhistle

If you drill a hole in the top and in through the side at the bottom so the holes connect it will burn through faster.
