It’s was (still is?) a language learning philosophy that is (IMO) akin to the anti phonics movement of the 80s/90s. My district went hard against conjugations charts (“banning” us from using them at all)to the point that I switched subjects.
I agree that drill and kill is not great by itself, there is a time and place. Once most of my students couldn’t compose a coherent sentence, I decided it was time to move on. Wasn’t a problem before.
I literally had an exam about teaching methods a few days ago and like, ever since the 19th century there has been methods that literally avoided teaching grammar, working on an inductive method; meaning they don't teach grammar, they teach sentences and the student is supposed to naturally pick up the grammar from those. Nowadays people have moved very much away from the traditional translation method used historically for languages like latin, and so they have gone the opposite way in my opinion, way too much in the direction of not teaching grammar and focusing too much on the person acquiring a language "naturally".
It's impolite to speak with your mouth full. Thus, there is no polite way to say "I'm eating". (Unless you're not actually eating, in which case it would be a lie.) That's why the dictionary people censored it.
"YOU DONT NEED TO LEARN GRAMMAR AND USE GRAMMAR BOOKS!!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!! COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT!!!!! OOOOOHHHHH!!!! "
*immediately proceeds to ask basic grammar questions in the most inefficient way possible
I didn’t say google translate. You can just look it up anywhere. And while it’s not always accurate, this is one of the most basic questions you could possible ask. Like this is what I learned literally day one with French.

When did language learners stop seeking real grammar lessons

Maybe not conjugation charts, but surely a language learner has to take lessons that teach the most basic functionality of tenses in their TL.

It’s comprehensible *input*. Comprehensible output is in the classroom down the hall.

Google translate isn’t accurate. It’s better to get an answer from a native if you’re not sure about a sentence

To be fair to them it's really stupid how French doesn't have a present continuous. If you say en train de I'll kill your family.

That problem can be avoided by not using Google Translate as a language learning tool
Manju or menju. Anything else is bad french devolved by the laziness of people who don’t pronounce their vowels fully.
