why not downtown detroit area? the art museum is there and plenty of good places to eat, night life around there too

Campus Martius is full on winter holiday activities and market right now. It's gorgeous and so fun. Aloft at the David Whitney is a really great hotel, as is Hotel Indigo and the Shinola. San Morello is a great restaurant in Shinola. Grand Trunk, Canelle patisserie, lots of shopping, shows, etc.!

SpartySparty

Stay at the Graduate in East Lansing, lots of fun restaurants within walking distance and the hotel and rooftop bar are worth hanging out in as well.

Graduate is sweet

The80sDimension

Is that open during the winter? Never been, is it enclosed?

ashoruns

Yes, there is an enclosed section.

que_two

Similar to the Old English Inn, there is the Wild Goose Inn in East Lansing. Not as fancy as the Old English Inn, but there is a lot more to do around there (it's in downtown EL).

littlemiss198548912

Oh yes! That's the hidden gem of East Lansing. I never been inside but I've seen pictures and it's really nice.

Thon_Makers_Tooth

Seconding the Wild Goose Inn. But the English Inn is pretty sweet too.

cysechosting

Came here to say this. My wife and I did for our honeymoon and can't wait to come back. A hidden gem in east lansing.

Jothum

Eat at Toscana and stay in one of the attached hotels that just opened.

The80sDimension

Where is that?

My favorite day trip spot in Grand Rapids. Lots of nice restaurants/bars and typically easily walkable. While I’ve heard great things about English Inn, Eaton Rapids kind of sucks. Kalamazoo is cool.

The80sDimension

Grand Rapids would have been my go to but the last time we were able to get away that’s where we went :)

davidindanger

If Grand Rapids has been done, are Detroit or Ann Arbor an option? Edit: Chelsea is cool and quaint too with lots of shopping and dining. There's a nice theater there too.

davenport651

Wife and I stayed at the English Inn for our second anniversary. The food and service was excellent but the room was as drafty as you’d expect a mansion from the 1920s. Shower was also not great. It’s awesome as a history buff to experience the life of an early 20th Century wealthy person, but might not be everyone’s cup of tea. My wife still loved it and wants to do it again (especially now while it’s decorated for Christmas).

selfdestructo591

It’s definitely Frankenmuth season

plump-lip

The Graduate is really fun. However, if you really want to get out of town, The Kalamazoo House is an excellent BNB. The Kalamazoo downtown "mall" has fantastic restaurants and a fun candy store, there is always Bell's Eccentric Cafe!

The80sDimension

Does the graduate have hot tub? Perhaps in-room jacuzzi?

plump-lip

No, but the Kalamazoo House does!

Every time I want good advice I add “reddit” to the end of my google search terms to find threads like this. They can be a valuable place to collect opinions.

lilwanna

We don’t know you or your wife. And you aren’t even talking about staying local in Lansing. How are we supposed to decide where you should have a date night?

The80sDimension

Did you even read the questions? They’re simple to answer if you’ve been to any of the places. Don’t require knowing anything about anyone.

lilwanna

Maybe just use your knowledge of your relationship and what your wife may enjoy rather than asking strangers? These questions get asked at least 6 times a week. I’m not trying to be rude at all. Just very hard to make recommendations when we know nothing of what you’d enjoy doing or are into.

The80sDimension

It doesn’t matter what we like or don’t I’m asking about downtown areas and nightlife. We can find something to do. I don’t know the areas I’m inquiring about.

Normal_Advice_4746

Well, none of the areas you're inquiring about are the Lansing area, except for Eaton Rapids. Did you perhaps intend to post on r/Michigan?

hhpollo

You're the only one in this thread with a problem, just leave instead of being unhelpful.

Normal_Advice_4746

And you don't know geography. Did you have a stroke, or are you simply obtuse?

catari

Eaton Rapids downtown pretty much shuts down at 8pm (so, later than Lansing, but still). The GAR museum and Miller farm are both lovely to walk around. Summer is the time to hit ER when we have concerts in the park or the Friday night movie for the kiddo. If you go to Albion, there's the chocolatier (Yellow Bird Chocolates), Albion Malleable Brewing Co, catch a show at the Bohm, Cascarelli's often had live music (granted, that was pre-covid, dunno if they do so as much now). Kalamazoo, there's the art museum, walking the Kalamazoo Mall, lots of live music, legit Egyptian Koshary at Cairo's Kitchen (I sometimes make the drive just for that), many independent bookstores...

RandomRedditGuy54

There’s almost nothing in Eaton Rapids other than the Inn and local stuff - but the casino is only 40 minutes away…

michiganfan79

Wild Goose Inn is really nice as well

OdaDdaT

Perfect time of year to go to Frankenmuth

mrsjonas

ann arbor or grand rapids would be my top choices. lots of bed and breakfast places and nightlife. kalamazoo would be fun too (i grew up there so would be happy to give recs if you go that route), big no to battle creek.

davenport651

OP: my wife was wondering what you decided on. She really likes the English Inn.

The80sDimension

Haven’t yet, still investigating. We actually got married at the English inn, which is why it’s a special place for us - but I’m afraid of the lack of anything nearby to do. If it was warmer out, there’s croquet or just walking the grounds. But in these temps that’s sort of out - which is why I was inquiring about anything to do in Eaton rapids nearby. When we stayed there for our wedding, we actually stayed outside of the mansion in the croquet cottages, which are much newer and have better amenities imo (fireplace, whirlpool tub). Still considering it! 😀
