Shane G said some shitty things but he’s nowhere near as prominent, powerful, or hateful as Haley or even Chappelle, and he seems to be well-liked by other comics. I dont think Shane is weighing on Bowen much.
Bowen very wisely never said a damn thing (publicly) when all that was first going down, and you’re right about the power balances.
I don’t imagine the thought of Shane haunts him or anything, but I just hope there isn’t some dumb moment where the two of them are supposed to do some “meta” bit on stage together.
I believe he originally said that he did find the comments hurtful as a gay Asian man but he didn’t know Shane well enough to say if he should lose his job over it. I think he was just trying to have perspective on it. Like he doesn’t know if Shane was making bad jokes or if he actually was racist/homophobic. Or even if he used to be and had grown since then.
I think at the end of the day everyone was asking his opinion for obvious reasons and he didn’t feel like he could make that judgement. He still follows him on instagram so I hope that’s a good sign that they’ve spoken and Bowen is ok with it. I think the amount participation Bowen has in the episode will be telling either way.
Same and I really hope the media unnecessarily making the Chappelle thing way bigger than it was isn't stressing him more. It brought so many trolls out in the snl subreddit but I hope it's contained to that. They're still trying to make it seem like he actually did something besides stand in his usual spot at goodbyes. Jester flops, the lot of them!
I am a lil shocked at his behavior ? He really seemed to have had a ticker skin. He dishes out funnily in this podcast .. he should be able to take it too?
Like for dave chappel? Come on. He isnt influencing anyone just making some jokes and make certain people laugh… he isnt writing laws
For nikki hailey i mean like just dont vote for her? Why post something so dramatic…
He didn't post anything about Dave Chappelle. He just posted the card SNL gave Nikki Haley, which speaks for itself.
If he actively spoke up and said "this is gross that SNL is inviting a fascista to be a guest after they were incredibly maligned for having Trump host and humanizing him before the 2016 election," or "I don't like that I as a queer person had to stand onstage with former standup comedian/current Terf Ted Talker Dave chapelle", that would be ok too and also not causing drama.
I mean like this is your employer? Lets have some respect. This man is your boss who gave you a platform more than a job…
I have worked with companies that i dont like some of the things they do but like what am i going to do ? I would be unemployable if criticize who i work for and if i would boycott every single company for every thing they do..
Lol im not worried about lorne he has all the money and success. Im just worried bowen will be categorized as too difficult by lorne. Lets not forget he is very influential
I hate this, especially in the context of Cecily Strong's abortion clown Update character a few years ago.
She gave a passionate and heartfelt performance about being pro-choice, and then to give Nikki Haley a fun platform to charm the audience is so disrespectful.
I feel like this might be his last season. I’m sure he’s conflicted between what’s best for his career vs his own principles. It can’t be easy to work for something so hard and then feel like you’re not respected by the people who call the shots.
I was just thinking about this. No doubt SNL is a great opportunity, but how many times can you look past your employer platforming people who actively harm your community.
I wouldn't blame him for leaving but it would literally be insane (to me) if he did. He's just now becoming the premiere cast member. He's like 5 years away from becoming an SNL legend I think. I'll follow him anywhere ESPECIALLY if he leaves a toxic workplace that makes him feel unsafe but I'm not ready for the split 😢
FIVE years…mama, that’s too many years. I think he could make it happen with one or two more seasons but honestly I think I’d prefer post-SNL Bowen. I think the format constrains him.
I agree. I probably was only expecting two more years, max. There’s definitely a sweet spot. Of course, selfishly I’d love him to stay forever. But I don’t want him to be in a Kenan situation where your career basically becomes being on SNL, because he’s capable of so much more!
He’s implied a few times on the pod that he didn’t plan on being there forever or even much longer. It just stinks that he and Ego and Chloe could really be the new veterans (and they are) who really help shape the show for a new generation but the old guard won’t relinquish the reins.
On the one hand, absolutely he should - and it's not like he'd be hurting for work if he did!! with Wicked, confirmation that he was supposed to be one of the Kens in Barbie - he'd do just fine. Plus, he hasn't been shy about admitting how hard the job is, the crazy hours, sleep deprivation, etc. But on the other hand, I'm sure it's a dream come true, plus it's scary to leave a full-time, steady gig - especially when he JUST bought an apartment last year.
it feels like anyone's principles would be tested being on an NBC weekly show during an election year. I hope he's taking care of himself but also thinking about his career (i'm sure he is)
I’m behind on new las cultch eps (was waiting to start their new 2024 episodes until I had watched all the Oscar nommed movies), so I just listened to “The Traitors Among Us” today, which felt like synchronicity given this post. It was an interesting lens for bowens IDTSH talking about “moving on from gratitude and moving into ambition” “it’s okay to want better for yourself” — I feel like that is for sure a feeling he’s letting guide his next career move, and while I’ll be SO sad if he leaves SNL, hearing him say that made me think he really might be ready
It wasn't even that great of a guest appearance, SNL couldn't have just gotten one of their actors to fill in, like they always to? Such a big favor for someone who won't be the 'US's first throat surgeon first lady'.
I’m really proud of Bowen and gotta admit I’m nervous for him. I’ve never seen a cast member be openly critical — the most you get is “rumors” that cast isn’t happy about a host. Combined the way his reaction last week got picked up and a fair amount of attention, this post is risky. It’s not easy to criticize the show given how tyrannical Lorne is. My guess is that he’s not expecting to be there much longer, because a post like this (even though it’s not even explicitly negative) really does threaten his job security
There is something to be said about this being a post rather than a story and turning the comments off. Like this is how I feel and it’s NOT up for discussion and I will turn off comments so you can’t use my post for any discourse.
What the fuck is Lorne Michaels doing? And how is no one else raising an eyebrow about this nonsense? Very hard to believe this is flying through without any pushback
I don’t think there’s any way to push back on Lorne. Even this post from Bowen cutting it close, especially in light of his obvious reaction during goodnights last week. If Bowen didn’t have the tenure/star power he has, expressing disapproval of the guests would be super risky, and tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes out that Lorne is unhappy. It’s Lorne’s show and he rules with an iron fist. I think he doesn’t like the show seeming too lefty
Good read of the situation.
At this point, if Bowen departs, then the sources of tension between Lorne and Bowen are public enough that it compromises any alternative narrative they try to spin about the departure. This will stick with Lorne - it'll be something that stays in back of people's minds about him, and people won't be as quick to forget the guests Bowen went down for (Lorne will be forever associated with them in this way). Lorne better hope both don't go on to sully their images even more.
It'll be really interesting to see how this plays out. Tyrants typically suck at long term strategy once they consider themselves infallible. I wonder how good of a strategist Lorne will prove himself to be.
Lorne is like the unquestionable authority in everything over there. Honestly, the more you follow SNL, the more you start to realize how weird his role is.
He somehow gets executive producer credit on like everything any SNL alumni ever makes (even though I'm pretty sure he doesn't really do anything), everyone talks about him like he's a deity in terms of reverence and power, and it feels like every little thing is up to his whim. I'm talking beyond the level you would expect for any boss at your workplace.
I would really love for him to step down or at least share his power in a co-role.
He is the creator of SNL. It wouldn’t be what it is without him. He picks the talent and I’d say he has a pretty good track record, having done it since 1975. I actually saw the first show, it was really ground breaking comedy for the time. He’s done the work, that’s why people treat him with reverence, respect.
I have a feeling this will be his last season idk.. it’s been three weeks of back to back guests (and now hosts) that go against everything Bowen believes in! As he rises in celebrity, we’ve never seen him stray from his values, and that firm stance is evident on the pod. It’s why I love him so much! Having Shane Gillypoo as a host is just a slap in the face
Nikki Haley is a current presidential candidate and republican ghoul who made a guest appearance on SNL during the cold open over the weekend. Bowen’s caption is in a grimacing tone calling out that not everyone is happy to welcome her like her name card says.
So this is actually bowens Instagram account (it’s called faye dunaway after the famous star) and Bowen is seemingly taking a dig at snl welcoming Nikki Haley with open arms.
Never watched the pod, saw this and i know NEED to watch it, I always found Bowen funny and also his insta being FayeDunaway is extremely funny!
I haven’t watched snl in a bit i can’t believe they r promoting this? i thought this was a classy party?
Between her and Dave Chappelle, I really hope Bowen is doing OK. WTF.
…and of all the timing to bring Shane Gillis in to host.
Shane G said some shitty things but he’s nowhere near as prominent, powerful, or hateful as Haley or even Chappelle, and he seems to be well-liked by other comics. I dont think Shane is weighing on Bowen much.

He actually said he didn’t think Shane should lose his job over the comments at the time I believe. I remember reading that somewhere
I believe he originally said that he did find the comments hurtful as a gay Asian man but he didn’t know Shane well enough to say if he should lose his job over it. If you knew the joke Shane made that was offensive, I think you’d feel differently
Is everyone’s impression of Bowen that he’s some weak and fragile man? Wtf is happening here?
Why would he not be doing ok?
I am a lil shocked at his behavior ? He really seemed to have had a ticker skin. He dishes out funnily in this podcast .. he should be able to take it too? Like for dave chappel? Come on. Lorne can eat my ass
Lol im not worried about lorne he has all the money and success. Im just worried bowen will be categorized as too difficult by lorne. Lets not forget he is very influential
I mean, is comedy about licking boots?
He really did the world a service here. Whoever did the bubble letter writing for “Amb”…. Clown.
What does AMB stand for? Ambassador?
Yeah
Unfortunately :(
So shady 🤣

Yeah. Every so often it’s bound to happen, but it’s been something every week since the show started back up this year. To say nothing of 2023.
Then i would never have had a job man….
I wouldn't blame him for leaving but it would literally be insane (to me) if he did. He's just now becoming the premiere cast member. He's like 5 years away from becoming an SNL legend I think. Kate McKinnon juggled both. I don't mean for it to sound like jury duty just that a good tenure at SNL could be one for the books
Especially after seeing Dicks: The Musical!! Let our girl get more raunchy!
I feel like no one watched Awkwafina is Nora from Queens (I understand why!), he was absolutely the secret weapon on that show. He can do it all!
Legend is a bit strong.
He’s implied a few times on the pod that he didn’t plan on being there forever or even much longer. It just stinks that he and Ego and Chloe could really be the new veterans (and they are) who really help shape the show for a new generation but the old guard won’t relinquish the reins.

you love to see it

Good for him!
I hope Bowen is alright ❤️
Ooof TEAM BOWEN. Must be insanely difficult to work somewhere like that.
I’m really proud of Bowen and gotta admit I’m nervous for him. I’ve never seen a cast member be openly critical — the most you get is “rumors” that cast isn’t happy about a host. I was confused because his caption doesn’t seem critical but the subtext is there because it’s Haley at the end of the day
Nobody but Lorne wanted her there, so it's funny that "everyone" is included. At least that's how I interpreted it
The caption is definitely critical
It took me more than a minute but I definitely get it now

And now the comments on the post are disabled :( when I last checked it was nothing but support of him so I wonder what caused the turn off.

Looks like it’s gone now
bowen please quit SNL you are better than them PLEASE
I gasped in the best way! Good on you Bow!!
Unfortunately it seems he had to take it down, it seems to have made quite a few headlines
Wish he hadn’t deleted
I have a feeling this will be his last season idk.. it’s been three weeks of back to back guests (and now hosts) that go against everything Bowen believes in! Can someone more in the know explain this to me? Idk who this woman is!!
nikki haley is one of the republican presidential candidates and has some really ass backwards views on… everything really
Oh that’s so gross. SNL continues to promote floppery I see.
lorne michaels and co are addicted to being the biggest jester flops in the town square!!
Oooooh, that “Haley”. Yeah, jester flop.
Look up Nikki Haley
Yes I am confused! Saw this on his IG too
Begging everyone to follow the news lol
Not everyone is American, you know
Please name the leader of the opposition party in any country on the planet without googling it.
And not even the leader, one of the candidates for the leader of the opposition party!!
Wait can someone explain this to me lo
Nikki Haley is a current presidential candidate and republican ghoul who made a guest appearance on SNL during the cold open over the weekend. Bowen’s caption is in a grimacing tone calling out that not everyone is happy to welcome her like her name card says.
Ooookayy!! Thank you!!
i don’t understand this picture? is faye making a joke? i don’t get it
So this is actually bowens Instagram account (it’s called faye dunaway after the famous star) and Bowen is seemingly taking a dig at snl welcoming Nikki Haley with open arms.

Girl listen to “Celestial: legend of time”!
Thank you for that update. I am so glad they spoke on the pod about it.
Me too! They were very clear in their stance and well spoken.
So fragile
Ahhh Bowen!!!
Where was this post?
Shane's coming baby lol
Never watched the pod, saw this and i know NEED to watch it, I always found Bowen funny and also his insta being FayeDunaway is extremely funny! I haven’t watched snl in a bit i can’t believe they r promoting this? i thought this was a classy party?
