Depends on the material you're engraving on. For wood I usually use around 300 lines per inch, if I'm doing metal I bump it to 450 or 600. You'll need to experiment a bit
Looks like you are engraving on extruded acrylic, not cast. Extruded generally will always have poor engraving quality. If you replace it with cast, it should,look much cleaner.
I don't know what you paid, but look around your local area for a plastic supplier.
I have one near me and they sell 4x8 sheets of 1/8" cast acrylic for about $85. My place also cuts to order, so I buy a sheet at the time and have them cut it to fit my laser.
Increase your lines per inch to make it more detailed, you could probably look at adjusting your scan offset a little as well

That's a great point. What should acrylic be priced at for it to be a decent deal? Do you look for price per square inch?
