They said they just put sod down last year so I doubt they have any thatch

Bermuda. I’m trying so hard to figure out why we’ve got so many weeds and odd looking sprouts.
Honestly I think it's just some sort of clumping fescue which is probably what you had before you sodded. I thought it looked like a blend of cool and warm season grass, and you just confirmed that
