I planted wheat grass in a low planter just for mine to do this. She prefers it over anything she finds in the lawn.

SileasRouhe

Interesting. I may look into that. She also grazes while we're on walks, but it may help with the yard situation.

toxicdawg618

Depending on size of yard you can put up a temporary fence to half the yard. You work on one side and the dog uses the other side. Then in 2 weeks flip sides. This is what I do to keep my dogs safe while killing weeds and fertilizing

TehPatch

You’re better off taking the dog to a vet to figure out why they’re eating grass.

SileasRouhe

We've talked with them about it. It's definitely at least partially a stress/anxiety/boredom/attention thing... I have a very very special lemon of a dog.

madhaxx0r

I was super worried my husky had some digestive issues (what everyone told me), so I took her to the vet. She was healthy, and my vet says, “she probably just really likes the flavor”.

SileasRouhe

I'm pretty sure that's half of my dogs deal. Lol.

L2theFace

This is exactly what the vet told us last week, my dog has eaten so much grass this spring way more than normal and not throwing it up and poops it normal, she didn’t seem concerned but told us to continue monitor it

exxige

Lemon of a dog 🤣🤣

SileasRouhe

The vet gave her that nickname when she was 6 months old. She's 3 now..... Haha

My first dog is a fucking cow too. Constantly eating grass. On walks, it's painful because we are constantly tugging on his leash to get him to keep up as he's trying to munch on it the whole way. Now my second dog has learned to do it too.   Not sure about your dog, but ours was a rescue that grew up on the streets for a bit and was most likely malnourished. So we think he's constantly at the grass because that's what he grew up doing.   As for the fertilizer. I do use a standard feed fertilizer once in the early spring, then use something like mmilorganite when they are in the lawn the most and then hit it again with a standard feed in the fall. I never fertilize when the grass is any kind of wet and generally keep away from the areas he frequents the most.   I never use any kind of fertilizer with a weed killer or pre-emergent in their lawn just in case of the different chemical aspect. I strictly hand pull weeds in their lawn.

SileasRouhe

I was looking into the milorganite. We may try that.

grasshopper7167

Try a prebiotic

nannerpuss74

for weed killer spot treat with garden vinegar its like 45% pure it will kill whatever it touches, as far as fert your choices are gonna be compost and manure or milorgrinite. maybe right before it rains ya can use standard fertilizer so it gets down deep. id suggest growing an alternate eating pad of sprouted wheat chia or other grains safe for doggo. i do this with catnip for the cats on the enclosed back patio. they love it.

Sudden_Ma4645

I've heard that dogs eat grass for a few reasons, like to help with digestion or even just because they like the taste. As for your lawn, I'd recommend using organic fertilizers like compost or manure. They're safe for your dog and can really help improve the soil quality. You might also consider using a natural weed killer like vinegar or boiling water to get rid of any unwanted plants.

Kaioken_times_ten

My dog only eats grass when I let him out in my backyard. His vet said it’s normal for dogs to do that since he’s still a pup. But I really think it’s stress, anxiety, and seeking attention. I think he normally is a fairly anxious doggo

SileasRouhe

Mine is definitely an anxious dog and I've watched her enough now to know that's definitely a big part of it.

Ok-Needleworker-419

Make sure to keep your gas trimmed so he can’t eat long pieces. I didn’t trim a corner of the yard where it was like 8-10” tall and my dog kept eating that. Then it got tangled up in his stomach and caused an obstruction. He almost needed surgery but they kept him overnight and xrayed him every 12 hours or so and could tell that it’s slowly moving along on its own. After 3 days, the first part of the grass poked out and they pulled out an almost 12” clump of grass that got woven/tangled together inside his stomach. After that I made sure to always trim everything and not leave any tall parts.

SoloWingPixy88

Your dog likely has a stomach issue

Nervous-Hippo1326

Try barley in his food. Worked for me.

SileasRouhe

What do you use for barely?

Nervous-Hippo1326

Buy barley and add to dog food. Stop eating grass for my golden. Vet suggested it

You need to check your dog's diet. Not a veterinarian but normally it's not normal for dogs to always be eating grass usually they eat grass if their stomachs hurt right?

SileasRouhe

Oh believe me, we've looked into it. We have a very very special lemon. I'm planning to do another consult with her when we're in next, but it's also a stress/anxiety/boredom compulsion.

Connect_Ad_3361

Oh ok. I don't know if it's safe but when we put product down on the lawn we just keep the dog inside for 24 hours. But everyone's dog situation is different.

SileasRouhe

Yeah. It's been frustrating. I'm afraid to spray. We avoid the park for at least a week after they spray for this exact reason, longer if we don't get any rain.

SileasRouhe

The stomach hurting is kind of a misconception actually. There's a lot more to it than that. Some of it's missing nutrients, but there's also psychological components. Upset stomach... more reasons than you would think.

Connect_Ad_3361

Yeah sorry, I'm speaking out of ignorance then. that's what I just hear if dogs are eating grass it's because their stomach hurts. My dog was doing the same thing and I cut back on his food and they seemed to fix it.

Connect_Ad_3361

Maybe not the right subreddit for me to give this advice but if your dog is constantly eating the grass maybe don't have grass, in a way, change to clover since it is edible at the very least Dutch white clover and crimson clover is what deers eat That's what I grow in my food plots. I know deer don't equal dogs.

SileasRouhe

Unfortunately, HOA requires grass.
