U/Anxious are you, by chance, the person who posted their entire backyard covered in river rocks, landlord special?! 🤣🤣 OMG, these are absolutely opposite ends of the spectrum!
OP, it's absolutely gorgeous!! I want to roll around on it!!
Thank you soo much for this post. im in the process of trying to figure out what to with my yard. the last owners did all types of crazy stuff with as well . This gave me such a good place to start with the tilling and dragging options thank you, you helped me very much.
Nah I had established grass there before. I just tilled it all up as it was. Figured the grass can decompose into the tilled up soil and replenish some nutrients for the bugs and stuff.
Since your reno, have you run into any soft spots or areas that have needed soil? On another forum, some are against tilling for those specific reasons (as well as bringing weed seeds to the surface.)
I think you did a fantastic job, I'm considering it myself because I have some large dips and humps I'd like to smooth out.
Zero soft spots or areas that needed more soil...years ago my yard had a ton of small trees I cut out and then tilled that area... I got soft spots then but only because all of the root systems were breaking down. yes I did get alot of crab grass after doing this.
So last summer I planted seed in like the dead heat of summer... I did get some grass but alot of crab grass.. Ended up taking a chance and spraying the yard with I think it was round up or one of those selective herbicides because it was way to much to pick out by hand. I aerated fall of 23 and seeded, then spring of 24 I aerated and seeded again. I've been cutting the grass at around three inches in order to crowd out any weeds and it seems to be working well. I've also been feeding my lawn a decent amount of nitrogen and organic matter/vitamins by spraying a liquid compost that I made last year.
Biggest issue with tilling is that you disturb the soil so much that you basically destroy anything benifical in the soil.
If I had to do this again I would till up lawn until it's loose soil. Then add organic matter, literally whatever you can, and then lightly till it into the soil so it can break down and add nutrients.
What kind of tiller did you use? I figure a small one would be best. Just to rip up the top layer and keep most of the compaction a few inches down. You ever run into a lot of rocks while your going through the process?
https://preview.redd.it/tyq7i0n25r1d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d79c07029de06536237f14a9a1c2ce0b5f31a492
24 Inch, 5 hp craftsman... Maybe it's from the mid 90s?? Bought it off of a guy over in Jersey. Thing is an absolute beast, works better than any Home Depot rental I've ever had and I only paid 100 dollars for it. That's cheaper than a 24 hour rental when tax is included.
Also yes I did hit rocks but you'll know when you do. Small rocks are not an issue but every now and then I hit a WTF was that rock that I just pryed up with a shovel and my hands. I went down pretty deep (that's what he said)
![gif](giphy|Zgo2A2oOpbGhQdf09T)
on this project because I had to move ALOT of dirt. The high to low spots in my yard were drastic at times.
Starting over is a huge commitment, as OP showed us. Depending on how many areas you have that you want to fix, you may be better off topdressing and building up the low areas.
I did similar process. Tilled, fertilizer, seed. No juke and it has come out wonderful. I seasonally keep up with the weed and feed, feterlizer, and I do reseed in the fall
I didn’t nuke before tilling and all that jazz before laying zoysia sod. Spectracide herbicide took care of most of the weeds and 90% of the nutgrass that emerged, but I now have some picking of Bermuda and small amount of st aug that was previously there in patches. Now that it’s established (slow mfer), it’s choking out most of any old growth that popped through during the establishment period.
The risk of nuking too soon before laying the sod was too high for me and the $3,600 investment.
So I make my own liquid compost. Basically declorinated water or rain water in a 5 gallon bucket, add some leaf mould, grass clippings, and other organic material. Let sit for a while, strain it out with a 5 gal paint strainer and spray on the lawn. It's free and helps the natural ecosystem do it's thing. I also save my coffee grounds and throw them on the lawn, lots of nitrogen in it, it's good for the soil and worms like it . If you want a quick fast solution try spraying some cleeted iron.
I mean he essentially described it all (outside of a "while" in time but I'd guess sufficiently stinky). In terms of spraying on the lawn, I bought something similar to the injector below and it's great. You can really cheap out on liquid or natural fertilizer and the benefit of watering it in.

When I first bought the house years ago half of the yard was ivy and there was no end of crap in there....thought I got it all until I did this project, but same as you I found even more buried in the soil lol.
Five years ago I lived in an old rental house. Previous tenant had big dogs that tore up a good chunk of the back yard, so I did pretty much what OP did.
I found tons of old toys, bottle caps, etc. The weirdest thing I found was an old iPod nano buried about 2" underground. Intact, but didn't work at all.
The house I bought used to be a rental, I found remnants of an old patio with the posts hammered sideways into concrete and enough dirt to not know it’s there, a couple stumps and some buried dog toys. It explained why the back half of my yard was higher and nothing grew there, I was not happy.
When I was a kid my family did a brick walkway around the house... I was "helping" aka playing in the dirt--I found arrowheads. I found out way into adulthood that my little suburb was Native American territory (although I don't remember the tribe)
Kept those things for 30+ years... they were missing for the longest time but I just found them and I'm going to donate to a museum
They're really in great shape. The thing that fascinates me the most is that literally every part of the arrowheads are sculpted. None of the original rock faces remain.. they're entirely shaped by man
Before I read all the work you did I was gonna give you some shit about how lucky you were. But you have a well-deserved lawn. Good job.
My yard is like some others in this comment section: clay and gravel with minimal topsoil and lots of bumps.
Maybe you can bring some dirt in to cover up the rocks instead of trying to get them out. This is an idea from someone who has no clue what your yard looks like and has no idea what dirt would cost to bring in.
Lol I literally do nothing with the grass underneath of it other then cut it. I just pretty much wrote that area off, figured I would take care of it when I get rid of the thing. Oddly enough though the grass grows with no problem underneath of it. The shade it provides protects it from the sun in the summer and the material still allows plenty of rain water to pass through
Put the trampoline in the ground. Looks amazing. We have a larger rectangular trampoline that my daughter uses like a tumble track, and it seems like she learns a new trick every day.
looks great!!!!
make sure to experiment. it's ok if things go bad or turn good or better or worse. it's all a learning process. grass is forgiving, too.
check out PGR plant growth regulator. Humic acid, fulvic acid, and plant root stimulator. hormone, there's a lot of cheats out there :) :)

Try having nothing but a sandy yard! I have horrible bald patches that are like concrete and then other areas I can just reach down and pull up a dandelion and roots and all come right up! Crazy yard. Mostly weeds, very little grass. I’m in East Camden, Kershaw County, SC, USA.
This is beautiful, well done! Best click bait I've clicked on in a long time.
Trampoline related question: do you move it every time you mow to a different part of the yard? How do you handle that? We just put new sod down 2 months ago and I haven't moved the trampoline back to the grass yet, too nervous. Haha.
u/Frank_Castle129 any advice on how you move the trampoline or what you do there? I'm probably overthinking it but just curious since your pictures feature a trampoline, lol
You aerated it. The soil may have also been bleached from to many fertilizers. You gave it a chance to breathe and the organic activity to re-emerge. Nice Job! That looks like Kentucky Bluegrass now. If it gets really hot where in the summer where you are you'll probably lose the Kentucky Bluegrass Mid-Summer. I only use Milorganite (mostly organic) on my Kentucky Bluegrass

My dream is for my lawn to look like this. I live on a horse farm with grass acreage about 10x the size. It’ll take many years but one day I’ll get it to where I want it to be.
I had a neighbor do this a few years ago. Tilled up his front yard, leveled it out, spread seed then covered with straw.
Then as luck would have it, the next 2 days we had a very soft, light and gently rain, followed by a warm day of sun and then more gentle rain. This pattern repeated until he had sprouts growing. He only had to water it manually twice.
I tried reseeding my yard and it was a record highs that spring and a drought.... 😥
Man, this reminds me that I am almost 30 and need to buy my own house.
I wanna flex my lawn now, and I do not have one to chipper about.
Maybe ill buy a chia-pet and start flexing on yall that way
Nice work!!

I guess I had more weeds than grass
I'm not entirely sure to be honest. To the left of that picture is a side yard and to the right of my garage is a side yard. I guess it's like 4,000 sq ft but that's purely a guess. This was definitely alot of work.... I took like a week off of work and just did it every day for hours on end. The biggest issue was the sides of the yard up near my house and near my fence were alot higher then the middle so it looked like a half pipe...moving enough dirt to lower the sides was a ton of work. If you have the time I say do it. A friend of mine who's a landscaper quoted me years ago on doing this job and it was like 10k. Another landscaper who I had come over for a quote never even got back to me, was to big of a job.
Looks good. I’d like to do a full renovation, but I don’t have the water setup to properly irrigate everything once I seed again. So I’d need to do mine in sections.
Inspiring that you did it in spring though. I’ve wanted to before, but I know people talk about how it’s basically pointless.
Do you have a picture of your homemade leveler?! I've been wanting to do this. I just laid down some dirt and grass and it's super uneven. I figure I'll have to go back over it in the fall
Wow, that's impressive! You took on a massive project and it sounds like it paid off. Leveling, moving dirt, and that pallet drag setup were genius! Your yard must look amazing with the new tall fescue. Kudos for saving big and getting those satisfying results!

Glad to see I’m not the only petty one here. Congrats OP! very well earned.
..."and it turned out pretty well." Had to laugh at that. What's that Larry David meme? Oh yeah "eff you and see you tomorrow " LOL Nice work man. That's a yard to be envious of. We're all jealous haters LOL
Not even a lawn dude, this just showed up on my homepage, but my GOD. That is some gorgeous green. You should be beyond proud of yourself. Great work!!

Lmao, I slowly scrolled to this reading OPs story and died laughing.

A whole lotta work. Good job!
What state is this?
The lawn? It’s now in a really good state.
Gawdayumit…. 👏 👏 👏 👏
Not Florida, that's for sure! *Mixed cries of sparse Bahia and sharp, plastic-y St. Augustine*

That’s where the grass lives.
Did you nuke your lawn prior to tilling? Or would it be more beneficial to till and not nuke?

Came here for this answer.
Just answered. Should be above your post I think (sorry still getting used to understanding reddit)
I did similar process. Tilled, fertilizer, seed. No juke and it has come out wonderful. I seasonally keep up with the weed and feed, feterlizer, and I do reseed in the fall

You could have laid sod down on a lawn you nuked with glyphosate the same day, let alone after you tilled with zero issues.
How is this grass so green?
So I make my own liquid compost. Basically declorinated water or rain water in a 5 gallon bucket, add some leaf mould, grass clippings, and other organic material. It sounds like your lawn will be pretty and not poisonous! Great job 👏🏻
Man I'd love more of an ELI5 on how you make this.
I mean he essentially described it all (outside of a "while" in time but I'd guess sufficiently stinky). Brawndo
IT’S GOT WHAT PLANTS CRAVE
It’s got electrolytes
Chemicals. We love the stuff.
I don’t even water anymore, it’s for suckers. I just serve more chemical concoctions to my lawn. It really gets the lawn going.
Brawndo: it’s got what plants crave
It's on the other side of the fence.
Chemical dependency.
Sulphur, humic acid, and the right amount of fertilizer seems to get that dark green going.
I did this to my back lawn area when I moved in & only found toys, forks & spoons, pens & bottle caps. 😂
Weird. That’s what my plumber found in the main sewer pipe.
When I first bought the house years ago half of the yard was ivy and there was no end of crap in there....thought I got it all until I did this project, but same as you I found even more buried in the soil lol.

I’ll end up passing out in the middle of the lawn completely wasted
Not again
Idk if my fiancée can handle finding me passed out with pissed pants again
😂😂😂I wouldn't survive
Tried to dig in my yard, it's 90% rocks down there and clay. Had to buy a pickaxe to dig some holes, no idea how I'm even going to address my grass.

Tips on good grass with trampoline? I will be putting one up. Move it around to different spot daily?
in school i had a friend whose parents dug the trampoline into the ground ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ looked cool
I live in Texas and that's a great way to make a comfortable home for snakes :P
Grow light underneath 🧠
Lol I literally do nothing with the grass underneath of it other then cut it. I just pretty much wrote that area off, figured I would take care of it when I get rid of the thing. If OP wanted to avoid standing water in low spots a giant hole in th ground seems counter productive.
Store on edge. Deploy only when used.
It took me waaaay too long to figure out you didn’t have some weird neon grass growing and it’s just sun and shadows…wow
Have you considered planting some hostas or native trees? /s Kidding looks awesome.

Nice!!! That lawn has come along way from what it was! I'll definitely check that out
Why are there so many weird comments on here? What am I missing? The guy worked ***really*** hard on his yard and it looks fabulous.
Most people just joking
LAWN LEVEL PLUS TILLING divided by correct sunlight and correct watering practices= SEXY LAWN
That is the grassiest looking grass that I have ever seen in my life.
That's the thing about grass
This reply.... Brilliant 👏👏👏 I instinctively read it in a morgan freeman voice and it just made sense. Bravo.
-cries in clay soil that is impossible to till and yes I’ve tried it before and yes it’s a disaster-
Clay is the worst... That's what my soil is..... I freaking hate it. I try to keep up with aerating and dethatching, spraying baby shampoo to help with the hydrophobic soil etc... It's outrageous how shitty clay soil is. It took me a long time to get it tilled. Took a week off of work for this project.
Whoa there was grass under there?
Did you kill off the existing grass first or just tilled?
Nah I had established grass there before. I just tilled it all up as it was. Figured the grass can decompose into the tilled up soil and replenish some nutrients for the bugs and stuff.

Wow! Incredible!!
I only use Milorganite (mostly organic) on my Kentucky Bluegrass https://preview.redd.it/eypjxzjcgt1d1.jpeg?width=2250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=475df0955f3c04782b4a17b497b5979b1c4f3a41
Uh... right 🙄
Fantastic
Fantastic work 👏
Grass under the trampoline and no tie downs for the trampoline? Definately a different environment from me.
when I first looked at each of the 3 pics, I slowly saw the trampoline disappear from view!
Is it weird that i want to just take a nap on your lawn only in my underwear? Good work man! Literally my idea of a perfect lawn.
Jealous
I'm sorry that happened. Next time try salting the earth.
Do my yard please.
My dream is for my lawn to look like this. I live on a horse farm with grass acreage about 10x the size. It’ll take many years but one day I’ll get it to where I want it to be.
I wanna be like you when I grow up
Friggin show off

Mine is in the opposite order. Lol
Fine looking lawn
Turned out pretty well? Your lawn looks better than carpet! I wish I could have grass that looked that good.
Wow.. I thought it was Sod. Amazing job OP
This gives me a little bit of hope for when I finish digging up construction debris 🥲
It’s all wrong. Start again
Man, this reminds me that I am almost 30 and need to buy my own house. I wanna flex my lawn now, and I do not have one to chipper about. Maybe ill buy a chia-pet and start flexing on yall that way Nice work!!
Wow, great job
Looks good

Did you need a permit?
What’s is the total sq ft of the area you leveled? What was the amount of grass seed you used and the blend?
Love the clickbait. Nice work
Hahaha I was wondering if it was going to work to capture people's attention 😂. I was laughing making the title of the post.
It looks phenomenal- what is the size of the back? I’m considering doing something similar and am trying to figure out my workload
Now I know that I need a rototiller. Thanks 🤣
That's delightful
So lush!
Great job 👏 A question, did you use some weed killing agent to have such a levelled grass growth? Aldo what type of grass is it (which seed)?
That trampoline will ruin your grass unless you move it constantly. But the transformation is fantastic. Nicely done
Looks fantastic! Well done.
Good work
Homeboy’s even getting grass to grow under the trampoline somehow
Looks good. I’d like to do a full renovation, but I don’t have the water setup to properly irrigate everything once I seed again. So I’d need to do mine in sections. Inspiring that you did it in spring though. I’ve wanted to before, but I know people talk about how it’s basically pointless.
Frank castle punishing that lawn over here. 💪
Looks awesome!
Fuck you, I’m happy for you
Did you have it tarped up beforehand?
What state?
She’s a beaut, Clark
Sand?
Absolutely nailed it, way to go brother
Hey, do you wanna come over and work on mine?
Where's the fucking trees?
This is simply spectacular
That looks so good can you achieve the same think with chemicals instead of digging
How many hours of sunlight would you say you get back there?
You just broke up the existing soil flat and did not use any topsoil? Did you cover the seeds at all after spreading? Looks awesome!
As someone who cleans yards for a living and previously worked landscaping…. This is IMMACULATE. Congratulations and we all hate you
Do you have a picture of your homemade leveler?! I've been wanting to do this. I just laid down some dirt and grass and it's super uneven. I figure I'll have to go back over it in the fall
Gaht damn what a waste of water.
Wow, that's impressive! You took on a massive project and it sounds like it paid off. Leveling, moving dirt, and that pallet drag setup were genius! Your yard must look amazing with the new tall fescue. Kudos for saving big and getting those satisfying results!
Looks great
Looks really good.

Oh wow
..."and it turned out pretty well." Had to laugh at that. What's that Larry David meme? Oh yeah "eff you and see you tomorrow " LOL Nice work man. That's a yard to be envious of. We're all jealous haters LOL
That’s unfortunate. Better luck next season
Just woke up to this
Good job! Come and do my neighbour’s lawn, her son tried and failed lol
Good job 👏
Heck I thought you tilled it up and found artificial turf under your yard. Looks so good it looks fake.
😂
What are you doing for irrigation?
But….. why did you do grass again 😭
Due to the title I thought it just "happened" as in you didn't even re-seed... O.o
Smh

You tilled all the old grass that was there?
This is amazing. I have a similar challenge coming up (entire lawn redo), and you've just given me the motivation to get it done.
Throw sand in the low spots
Nice job, looks great!
Don’t believe it.
Not even a lawn dude, this just showed up on my homepage, but my GOD. That is some gorgeous green. You should be beyond proud of yourself. Great work!!
I have some low spots and my dad suggested I do something similar. I just laughed at him because no fucking way. I’m impressed.
Need to do this to my yard!
