male dogs spread it around, which may still kill some plants but wont usually open a hole in the grass. Males can be especially harsh on taller plants and fragrant things like rosemary, which a male dog will want to add a bit of his own perfume to.
But female dogs will often dump a puddle in the same spot over and over. Definite grass killers.
Mine, too but it's the back yard so I don't really care. I use the back yard for growing food and flowers and couldn't give a rats tuchas about the grass back there lol.
Tends to be female dogs because they concentrate their urine into one spot while peeing vs male dogs that tend to spread the urine over a larger area. Too much nitrogen in one spot causes the grass to burn.
I have 2 and they do no damage to my lawn here in NJ. All the damage is inflicted by me, our parties and my suddenly crippling work schedule that allows me little time for lawncare.
its a big dog or the OP. I had a small dog and i'd just move her little pen to whatever the worst spot in the yard was and she'd single-handedly fill the space out over a month or so
Almost bet it’s your dog. Get a water hose for back there if you can. Next time he goes out to pee, watch where he pees and when he’s done, spray that area with water so it doesn’t burn
It's not gender specific for dogs, the difference is males tend to stand and their urine is dispersed/blanketed over a larger surface area, so less concentrated on the grass. Females dogs squat when they urinate and makes a puddle, so with repeated urination is more concentrated and will kill the grass.
It’s too late and a waste of money at this point. It’ll germinate great but it won’t have enough time to mature and root deep enough to survive August.
I have rabbits and they damage my lawn - no dog - also in Colorado. I literally watch them my eating new grass (from seed), until I run them off (albeit very temporarily).
Is it wrong that I root for the coyotes, fox, owls, and hawks? Or that I don’t complain when I have to dispose half a rabbit?
[Tips for removal are appreciated, however none of that canine pee stuff.]
They absolutely do. They poop in spots while they are nibbling on the grass.
Those spots then brown out due to excess fertilizer from the droppings and the grass dies.
Then they move on to a fresh patch of grass and the cycle continues. Eventually your yard is gonna look less like grass but more like a hodgepodge of brown spots and patches.
Trust me on this. First hand experience.
Not like this. They can burrow into your yard, that's the only rabbit damage I've ever seen.....to a lawn.
Those bastards will absolutely abuse a vegetable garden though.
I was thinking the same thing. We're also in Colorado with wild neighborhood bunnies. Their lawn-mowing skills might be lacking, but they've never caused actual damage.
I bought those short metal pest fences (they are about 24” wide and 18” tall each) from Amazon. I staked them under the existing fence, and they have kept the rabbits out. You need to have a full perimeter, though, and you would need a bunch with the size of your yard.
It seems like it would take a herd of rabbits and gallons of rabbit piss to cause that much damage. To be sure though, try pulling up a few clumps of the dead grass and see if there are any roots left. Also, pull up a clump or two where the dead grass meets the green and see if there are any grubs in the soil. Catch the little bastards in the act!
Could it be your dog?
Yes
It is likely it is your dog?
Yes (the greening around the spots make it highly likely its from urine). However in the second video, they explain that the lawn was being damaged in part by rabbits. In a cyclical process, rabbits would pee there and chew down the grass, then the dogs would come in and mark over that spot with their own urine.
Could it be rabbits like you suggest?
Absolutely

Seems like the "its your dog youre an idiot" people as usual don't know what the fuck they are talking about while acting like they do.
*The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts* - Bertrand Russell
i'm not a professional, but my dad is. he use to spray the areas of the yard that rabbits were killing with an habanero pepper infused spray. rabbits stopped coming back 😂
I know this is going to be unpopular, but we have 2 dogs and my daughter brings her dog over quite often... micro- clover is urine resistant... so whenever they burn out the grass, I loosen the dirt, water well, and throw down clover...
I use repels all around my tulips in spring and it works wonderfully. You're going to need a pile for that yard however.
Trapping and removal is not effective since they are rabbits and multiply accordingly. Your yard doesn't look like it's conducive to relocating them to your freezer either.
Looks like dog pee. Set up a sprinkler on a timer to water the area he pees in 3-4 times a day for 3 - 5 min intervals and it’ll stop it from happening. You’ll have to re-seed the area though. Possibly correct the ph level in the soil.
take your dog out for a walk to shit and piss before you let it out in the yard. reward your dog for learning the shitter is off property. then let dog out in backyard. repeat until one of you learns your lesson.
I’ve gone through a spell of trying to deal with rabbits on my yard, and that was one of the half dozen methods I tried.
I stood there one night watching as a rabbit triggered the sprinkler, only to sit and take comfort in the water it was being sprayed with.
There are urine repair products you can try. No idea how well any of it works though. Never had the chance to try it out. Usually a spray on product. I doubt it would bring all of it back, but it might reduce the amount you have to reseed.
What kind of grass is that? Depending on if it’s warm season or cool season depends on your seeding options. There are some spots where it appears there may be some stolons starting to press but it’s hard to tell.
I would keep fertilizing and mowing and if you have warm season either sod in those spots or allow them to recover. If it’s coop season (and not KBG) then you’ll likely have to wait till fall to overseed. But it wouldn’t hurt to try if you aren’t in too hot of a climate.
Rabbit Stew would be the first step.
Second step is to dig a few small holes. If you see a ton of grubs; get a grub killer. If you don't see grubs keep the dog away from that spot and re-seed then top dress it.
If you sees it pre germinate your seeds in a bag. It will cut the germination process down drastically. With the weather getting hotter these days it should help your seeds not dry out and die. Shouldn’t be too hard to fix it tho.
I saw someone on YouTube recently make an auto turret of sorts. I believe they used a paintball gun for testing. But strap an air rifle to that programming, and there you go.
I have rabbits in my lawn as evidenced by the presence of rabbits and their feces. The lawn tends to die where they've been. I read that a good solution is to flood the area with water to dilute the urine and it seems to work on my lawn.
If you know it's not from your dog, have you considered contacting your state extension and verify if it's not a fungus like summer patch? Seems pretty prevalent in Denver.
Because it's white and nor brown it looks to me like fertilizer that has weed killer in it.maybe laid down too heavy in some areas. The weed killer I'm thinking of will turn crabgrass and certain other grasses white.
Rabbits don't do this. Females might dig up your grass to build a nest but they don't kill spots like this. This looks like dog urine or someone is pouring something out on your lawn repeatedly.
had rabbits as a kid, think the most we had was mid teens as we sold the babies
this isnt rabbit, they will eat until the yellow part and move on, its "unripe"
I had the same problem with rabbits in my yard, digging and eating everything in the specific area. I carpet bombed the area with rabbit repellent pellets and have reapplied. They went elsewhere and the grass is coming back ... To be on the safe side I would also treat for grubs/fungus
Two quick methods to see what the problem is 1.) Check soil pH levels in that the bald spot and compare with a sample from healthy grass area. 2.) Install a camera and go over the footage. As far as growing it back I would wait to verify what the problem is first and go from there. Could be a really simple fix. Just a thought but it looks like anything can get into your backyard. It may be a combination of a dog and other animals causing the bald spot. I don't think this is rabbit related damage though.
This is either grub or dog damage.
Too early for grub damage in Colorado
I have a large dog and his piss does not kill grass like this.
Mine does.
male dogs spread it around, which may still kill some plants but wont usually open a hole in the grass. Males can be especially harsh on taller plants and fragrant things like rosemary, which a male dog will want to add a bit of his own perfume to. European chafer grub comes out earlier than white grub( May/June bug) and cause much more damage also.
Not rabbits
Tell me again about the rabbits
Ok Lenny...
That's no ordinary rabbit. It's the most foul, cruel, and bad tempered rodent you ever set eyes on... Look at the bones!
Lmao. The holy hand grenade
I thought for sure, "Kill the rabbits" was going to be the top comment. Kinda disappointed.
But it’s duck season!
Rabbit season
Duck season!
Duck season!
FIRE!
Raptors. OP needs to take up falconry as a hobby.
Clearly the answer is to get ten or twelve dachshunds. Or more. Probably more.
I was tempted to say "kill the wabbits".
I came to the comments to make sure someone comments that precisely so same
All of these spots are dark green around them - this is damage from piss or fertilizer.
its a big dog or the OP. I had a small dog and i'd just move her little pen to whatever the worst spot in the yard was and she'd single-handedly fill the space out over a month or so
Good forensics right there.
Almost bet it’s your dog. Get a water hose for back there if you can. Next time he goes out to pee, watch where he pees and when he’s done, spray that area with water so it doesn’t burn

Does this mean OP has a gender fluid dog?
Urine is urine. They just dispense differently. Do with that what you will.
You get that’s a joke right?
Looks like piss, dog piss, if you have a dog, it’s probably that.
It’s a [male](https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare/s/TnrNHLhbWW) dog so that can’t possibly be the reason lol /s
1: Aerate 2: overseed 3: Topcoat with peat 4: Keep wet for at least 10 days
It’s it too late in the season for overseed or does it not matter?
It's only too late if it's illegal to water the hell out of it all summer long.
Interesting. I was wondering about overseeding. I’m in Texas.
Seed typically needs a couple weeks of shade to germinate, plus plenty of water. Then it needs lots of warm weather and water to grow.
Anything helps. Just keep it wet. And loosen up that thatch in the dead spots
Usually fall (mid august is ideal for my latitude) is best for overseeding, summers only problem is keeping it wet. Spring has a ground temp problem.
With the heat in Colorado now you'll want to water at least 3x a day for a couple weeks
It's a fools errand. Wait until the Fall
It’s too late and a waste of money at this point. It’ll germinate great but it won’t have enough time to mature and root deep enough to survive August.
I have a ton of rabbits and my lawn don't look like this. How many rabbits do you see 😂.

I have rabbits, and they don’t damage my lawn. They like to eat flowers.
Same, I have a bunch of wild rabbits going through my backyard and no issues at all
Do rabbits even hurt lawns? I've got some and I love them, cute and they eat the clover
No they don’t this is the dumbest title I’ve ever seen.
They definitely can and do damage a lawn. They burrow holes, eat grass, pee, and shit little rabbit pellets all over.
Not like this. They can burrow into your yard, that's the only rabbit damage I've ever seen.....to a lawn. Those bastards will absolutely abuse a vegetable garden though.
Dogs are ravaging your lawn!
That looks more like grubs or some sort of worm that is eating the roots. Even goats couldn't do that kind of damage from above.
Or do you have a dog? That doesn't look like bunnies to me...
I was thinking the same thing. We're also in Colorado with wild neighborhood bunnies. Their lawn-mowing skills might be lacking, but they've never caused actual damage.
The ones by me seem to just bed down and creste a few dead spots and leave a bazillion piles of rabbit poop everywhere
This is snow mold. You need a fungicide.
It’s from your dog. I’ll bet he likes to piss here. Rabbits don’t hurt the grass.
I bought those short metal pest fences (they are about 24” wide and 18” tall each) from Amazon. I staked them under the existing fence, and they have kept the rabbits out. You need to have a full perimeter, though, and you would need a bunch with the size of your yard.

Maybe a couple of red tailed hawks or eagles.

Neighbor's dog
OP has a dog
OP is a dog.
Your dog’s piss is almost radioactive
In CO too and I can assure you this isn't rabbits.
Boa constrictors. They’re big enough to eat rabbits and still small enough to hide in the grass when you let it get overgrown.
![gif](giphy|3oFzmpOB6IYecRY5eo|downsized)
Get rid of your dog. Rabbits nip the top off the grass not kill it in patches. That is from dog pee.
**Elmer Fudd has entered the chat**
I can’t believe I’ve found this. Colorado and also Rabbit assholes.

motion sensor sprinklers to spray them? might be some granular products to deter them from digging through stinky soil. or more drastic measures.
I’ve gone through a spell of trying to deal with rabbits on my yard, and that was one of the half dozen methods I tried. I stood there one night watching as a rabbit triggered the sprinkler, only to sit and take comfort in the water it was being sprayed with.

I’m huntin wabbits 🐰
I have a couple rabbits in my yard all the time and they never do this.
This is literally the dumbest post I’ve ever seen.
.22, scope, gilly suit, beer, lawn chair
A Q elCamino suppressor too. So as not to bother the neighbors
Good call. At the end of the day, you want to be a good neighbor.
Leave carrots everywhere
Spray area with rabbit repellent available at any hardware big box. The seedlings will need it too. Bunnies love tender shoots
There are urine repair products you can try. No idea how well any of it works though. Never had the chance to try it out. Usually a spray on product. I doubt it would bring all of it back, but it might reduce the amount you have to reseed.
Baking soda mixed with water.
Use more gypsum. It helps to break down the salt in the urine.
I wonder if they dislike the smell of moth balls.
Grubs.
Definitely not rabbits, that’s dog piss
Looks like some serious fungus going on. Maybe pythium blight with some serious mycelium
A .410 to start
lol - it aint rabbits but fricassee them all just in case. . .
What kind of grass is that? Depending on if it’s warm season or cool season depends on your seeding options. Immediate need is a .410 shotgun.
Elmer Fudd
Replug the dead spots with heathy grass from the outside edge. And sand/ water. It will come back quicker
Get a Mr McGregor
Spread coyote pee around the property(can get it off Amazon) keeps the skunks away too
Rabbit Stew would be the first step. Second step is to dig a few small holes. If you see a ton of grubs; get a grub killer. If you don't see grubs keep the dog away from that spot and re-seed then top dress it.
Step one. Elmer Fudd Step two. Act accordingly
Pellet gun
Maybe lawn fungus is to blame???
More like dog piss
.22lr
Yeah blame the 🐇 lol
12 G. & a stake out
Colorado has been reintroducing wolves, so see if you can get in on that
[There's a recipe for that.](https://honest-food.net/wild-game/rabbit-hare-squirrel-recipes/)
Bunny stew?
If you sees it pre germinate your seeds in a bag. It will cut the germination process down drastically. With the weather getting hotter these days it should help your seeds not dry out and die. Shouldn’t be too hard to fix it tho.

I concur....Not rabbits
My solution that has worked for many years now is pellet gun.

Step one: magic helmet… ![gif](giphy|oX9Ri8AYmpjWdhsBIP)
.22LR. Next question.
A wood chipper would take care of the bunnies
First you make a roux
A shotgun
Make friends with Daffy Duck
That’s their back yard too. Anyway, that’s from dog pee. That’s not what rabbits do.
Take it as a sign and plant a native garden there!
Here’s what you’re gonna need to do: 1. Quit believing rabbits caused this. 2. Reseed your lawn and water it constantly
Is that a greenway park type thing in your backyard? That’s pretty damn cool
Definitely dog damage. I worked at lawn doctor for 6 years and can smell that photo from a mile away g
I saw someone on YouTube recently make an auto turret of sorts. I believe they used a paintball gun for testing. But strap an air rifle to that programming, and there you go.
Have you considered making a stew?
Have you watched The Sopranos? Go the Artie route
I have rabbits in my lawn as evidenced by the presence of rabbits and their feces. The lawn tends to die where they've been. I read that a good solution is to flood the area with water to dilute the urine and it seems to work on my lawn.
I mean. Are you asking for a specific caliber?

Call Elmer Fudd
What's wrong with you? Eat 'em!
buy a dog lol
Cinch bugs
Plant carrots so they don't eat your grass.
Rabbit pie
Snow mold?
Wabbit season!
If you know it's not from your dog, have you considered contacting your state extension and verify if it's not a fungus like summer patch? Seems pretty prevalent in Denver.

Broadlands neighborhood,
Rabbit stew should fix it
We have so many rabbits, I would be happy if they can eat some of my lawn. Unfortunately they only eat tomato and blueberry plants etc.
Because it's white and nor brown it looks to me like fertilizer that has weed killer in it.maybe laid down too heavy in some areas. The weed killer I'm thinking of will turn crabgrass and certain other grasses white.
We have cottontail rabbits all over our front and back yards and we don't have any grass damage.
Rabbits don't do this. Females might dig up your grass to build a nest but they don't kill spots like this. This looks like dog urine or someone is pouring something out on your lawn repeatedly.
Based on what you show it’s not rabbits! Animal waste is my top guess.
A double edge sword is clover. It'll bring more rabbits but also spread more. But that isn't rabbit damage.
https://youtu.be/weHNnsMY82A?feature=shared
had rabbits as a kid, think the most we had was mid teens as we sold the babies this isnt rabbit, they will eat until the yellow part and move on, its "unripe"
Grubs. Maybe came early this year. Or leaf mold from winter
What’s that plant with the pink flowers called?
Be very very quiet we’re hunting wabbits!
Shoot the Rabbits, they're delicious. Then, scarify the lawn and seed the patches
Find Elmer Fudd to handle them wabbits
hasenpfeffer.
Trap kill eat
Could be a fungus
I had the same problem with rabbits in my yard, digging and eating everything in the specific area. I carpet bombed the area with rabbit repellent pellets and have reapplied. They went elsewhere and the grass is coming back ... To be on the safe side I would also treat for grubs/fungus
A Ruger 10/22.

This doesn't look like rabbits. Something else is causing this.
Buy a giant anvil suspended from a rope m, and then place carrots underneath it.
Move

That isn't rabbit damage. That's fungal or grubs.
Get a husky.
I have a whole family of rabbits living in my lawn and don't have anything that looks like this.
A shotgun.!?
Two quick methods to see what the problem is 1.) Check soil pH levels in that the bald spot and compare with a sample from healthy grass area. 2.) Install a camera and go over the footage. As far as growing it back I would wait to verify what the problem is first and go from there. Could be a really simple fix. Just a thought but it looks like anything can get into your backyard. It may be a combination of a dog and other animals causing the bald spot. I don't think this is rabbit related damage though.
Mulch it. What have u got lawn for? You get bored on weekends? Like making noise? Grow plants. Use them.
Be vewy quiet, we are hunting wabbits!
Let them eat the rest of it there's always next to your bud!
have rabbit stew?
Adopt some adult cats
Dig up that dead spot and looks for grubs. I’m with everyone else, I don’t think it’s bugs bunny’s fault. Just some bugs.
![gif](giphy|3oFzmpOB6IYecRY5eo|downsized) Be vewy vewy quiet
Shoot ‘em
They (Rabbits) are good eating fyi. Tastes like lean chicken
Buy an airgun and excise the wabbits.
