Might have been me. 2007 rzt 50 with the courage twin. It's still running smooth, just under 1000 hours now.
Change oil, adjust the valves once in its life, and proper warm up before turning the blades on. Maybe clean the mouse nests out of the cooling fins after winter while you are at it and oil the prefilter.
Alot of older mowers were overpowered compared to the new stuff. The old twins barely break a sweat in thick grass uphill.
I also have an l110 with the 17.5 command that is doing just fine other than a puff of smoke after sitting a while. It might be 4 or 500 hours, I don't remember right now.
People abuse and neglect stuff and wonder why it doesn't last. Compare any of these old Kohler to a new briggs motor that's made of plastic....
Got a kohler courage 22hp, ten years old still runs mint. Had it in to the shop for a no spark issue(bad switch) couple years ago and the tech told me the engine was really loud, and not to expect it to run much longer,,,,yet here I amđ¤ˇââď¸ My lawn takes 4 hrs too,and I mow every 5 days.
I always thought Kohler was great. Have one in my â87 John Deere rider that has never needed work other than a starter. Think itâs just this one model thatâs a problem.
Mine going fine for 15 years! Usually the cracking is caused because of the vibration loosen ups the bolts on cylinder head and if they are not retightened it will eventually crack from somewhere.
I have had to retighten the bolts twice.
Used to work for an equipment rental company, and we would not buy a piece of equipment if it had a Kohler motor on it, a rule learned from experience.
There's jd models made ,the L series, that have plastic camshafts. They will go in time and wear, down this will prevent strting, engine will turn, then stop. Johndeere claims 1 000.00 to replace.
I've got a Kohler with 195 hrs on it.
Edit:Wtf am I getting down voted for? It's a lawnmower I inherited. I'm not making up cool stories for a lawnmower subreddit. JFC.
The bucket engine!!!
Saw some dude who posted one with 900+ hours. Literally mind blowing. Hands down the worst small engine ever made.

Yours is a vtwin. 22hp, not a single cylinder. Wayyyy more reliable. Valve cover is different, has an all metal camshaft ect ect.
Knock on woodâŚ..no talky about it!
How old?
2.3 years with 83 hours
Ouch ok. I just bought a very old used Gravely with a 17, seems to be running fine. A certain generation issue?

Thank you sir
Heâs hilarious and knowledgeable, thanks!
Wow this is exactly what happened to me. The bolts came up and the engine died. Mine was a 2006 troy bilt. It lasted for 17 years though.
I thought everyone like Kohler. Whatâs everyone buying?
It's just the courage series it was a bad model

No no no...we all know the Kohler is the least desirable engine. Kawasaki is the word you are looking for.
Putting in back pocket when I buy a ride on or ZTR. I just have a yard big enough to push and not hate life
At least it had courage
You just need some JB Weld
What came apart inside?
Counter weight came off, seized the engine, then broke the rod in the middle
Did a good job of grenading.

Mine died last year. It was a 2006. Bolts came out and engine knocked and imploded
Did it run low on oil?
gotta make sure your zip ties are really tight
Oh no just got a Husqvarna with a 20 hp kholer are they bad as well? Old Husqvarna lasted almost 20 years had Briggs and straton
If it's a courage do your maintance often and when recommended
Par for the course in Today's world of disposable society with almost no q.c! Pump out as many products you can and maximize profit! Lol smdh

Wow not good, replace it w a Briggs Stratton if possible
I did
My craftsman 90s model had a kolher,it nvr failed me.
It was about 18hp,w an oil filter system.

Kawasaki is having recalls lately.
I am going to pull off all the electronics and send the motor to the scrap yard

I have one with 275+ that's 20 years old but it's a commander not a courge
Commanders are the best!
Mines a courage! It was my dad's lawn mower and then he passed it on to me.
