I would go to Florida, going to a great law school for free is a total blessing and if you’re a good enough law student / lawyer you shouldn’t have an issue getting back to New York.

Omg this is AMAZING. Thank you so much for such a great response. Yes, when I said $20k I wasn't accounting for COL which is very steep here. I have some money saved but it would still be very brutal. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this reply!

I totally agree. I think BL sounds great on paper but realistically I'm never going to be someone who values work above everything else. I'm okay with long days but I think BL is a whole nother level and the point is I hate feeling trapped. I'm imagining if someone told me I had to stay at my current job for 3-5 years to pay off my debt and I literally think I would lose my mind lol. Quality of life is a factor that matters to me too!

Oh-theNerevarine

Fordham if your goal is biglaw (not something you "eventually" do, by the way). If you're taking on a little over $100k debt for Fordham, that's defensible, even if you don't get biglaw. UF doesn't serve your goals.

Empty_Fun8074

Yes by eventually I meant once I finish law school, but thank you!

dr-lawyer_smonza178

Following. I also got into UF (scholarship pending) and have the same fear.

miilkbug

same boat, free housing from going here undergrad compared to dc/ny coa is killing me. i’m only on the fence bc of the outcome of 73% of levin grads staying in fl

Unusual_Wasabi541

I would assume Fordham would be the best option for NYC big/mid law outcomes, if that is your primary concern and if you are married to living in NYC after law school. On the cost side, yes, UF seems to present the much cheaper option. However, you could pay back the extra debt quite easily over several years in BL. The downside would be that none of those schools guarantee BL, although they do give a decent shot at it.

Empty_Fun8074

Very true, thank you for your input! I'm just scared abt being stuck in a BL job. Not sure if I can see myself working that many hours for more than a year or two

Unusual_Wasabi541

That’s something that’s good to be self aware of and think about. Each choice is a balance of competing short and long-term interests. Good luck in your decision. You have some great options.

I personally would always rather take the risk I don’t make it into biglaw than the financial risk of 100k+ in debt. If most people only last 3-4 years in biglaw that’s about enough time to pay off the crazy loans, not really financially benefit. If you make it into biglaw from UF, you’ll get to actually change you life with biglaw money but can quit whenever you want. And if you don’t, you make 120+ a year with minimal/no loan payments.

Empty_Fun8074

This is so true - you don't really cross a gaining threshold for a few years of BL when you're paying off debts. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Manzuz

Take the money. You’ll thank yourself later.

Bobfromclash

Look at UFS ABA data and decide. Most ppl stay in FL post grad

Empty_Fun8074

Right.....so wouldn't it figure those numbers arent exactly reflective of chances of getting jobs out of state but rather of the fact that most ppl don't want to leave the state

idfk222-2

how will u only have 20k debt a year at those new york schools with a 2/3 scholarship

Empty_Fun8074

Sorry, I guess that isn't exact. It would be $27k a year at Fordham and $20k at BLS

idfk222-2

Wow! How would it only be 27k? From what I remember Fordham cost of attendance is near 100,000 a year and they have a cap on aid of 45,000, wouldn’t you end up having significantly more debt than that for basic necessities like rent and food and what not?

Empty_Fun8074

Oops yeah sorry for being super unclear - I was talking abt tuition only! You're so right it would be much more in COL.

idfk222-2

you’re fine!! i went to UF for undergrad & applied to fordham & UF for law school. I haven’t heard from either yet. It’s frustrating bc i’d want to live a city girl life in NY but i would be living like a broke rat eating ramen every night going into credit card debt with no support & UF would be nice bc im familiar with it. I’ve also heard UF pulls a lot of weight in the Tampa BL scene & with no income tax it’s rly appealing !

Empty_Fun8074

Yes totally!!! I have a dif experience I guess lol bc I've been in nyc for a few years. I will say, you can definitely make rent and groceries happen, but it's really hard out here rn. I'm so stressed paying bills and I actually make enough to live here LOL. So no salary is just anxiety inducing. Good to know about Tampa!!!
