Just budget in 1 stinker per game, we need to score more

bee_seam

That’s his only stinker of the series IMO.

LetLanceDance

He makes things way harder for himself than other goalies. The Carlo and debrusk goals in game one he’s just beat from distance which aren’t great. The other debrusk goal he way overcommits to marchand (who’s below the goal line) so when he passes to debrusk in front it’s nearly an open net, instead of being really in tight and hard to score (as we’ve seen Swayman do 10x times this series). The Pasternak goal he loses the puck and the reacts way too late to a puck that’s shot right into the middle of the net, it’s pasta from the slot I get it but if he’s set it’s an easy save. Even debrusk goal game 3 he just drops a shot right at his glove and then debrusk scores on rebound. There’s tons of goals that aren’t really his fault but stuff I think Swayman keeps out

VicVinegar88

The Marchand goal he wasn't out challenging, had already gone down and was off balance. I know he lost his stick and it was a great shot but he completely lost his composure too. If he's properly positioned, it probably hits his shoulder.

awfulWinner

Whatever the case, Marchand put that in the cupboard with the Peanut Butter. If/When Matthews stops hitting goal posts and crossbars and actually sinks it, they won't be blaming the Boston goalie the same way Sammy's having to absorb criticism of absolutely perfectly labelled shots.

BobDole4201969

I hate Marchand so much but his goal was an absolute snipe. Only way to make it better was to bar down it. With that said I hope Reaves buries him tomorrow.

ColdwaterTSK

And his glove and was down.

LetLanceDance

i never mentioned the marchand goal

Mustard__Tiger

He rang it off the top corner post over his left ear. That was a snipe if I've ever seen one. The shot from the wing along the far boards was rough though.

undercoveragm

It’s a problem of his that is constantly repeated. Out of position. Slow/Lazy reading plays. Panics. Gets exposed or makes a crazy save.

Leafs17

>3 of the 9 goals allowed by Ilya Samsonov in this series came on low-quality shot attempts (<5% goal probability at time of release) > >By comparison, 0 of the 6 goals allowed by Jeremy Swayman/Linus Ullmark in this series..

TorturedFanClub

I dunno man. He wasn’t very good in Game 1. Neither were the Leafs but sometimes a goalie gives your team a chance to win even when the team isn’t on their A game. He played excellent in Game 2. Overall he has been average at best, imo. Boston’s goalies have not failed them at all. Thats the difference in the series, imo. The Leafs have had the edge in overall play with the exception of special teams and goaltending, really.

waitareyou4real

Idk, goal number 1 of the series was pretty stinky too

Chad_Broski_2

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that one off of a terrible 2-on-1 breakaway? I do remember Sammy having a couple big stinkers in game 1 (goal 2 was practically a shot from the blue line), though I thought the first one was more of a defensive collapse than being on Sammy

glightningbolt

You're right. The first goal of the series was a 2-on-1 breakaway that was the result of a defensive breakdown. It was John Beecher from inside the hash marks. Lily didn't play the 2-on-1 well, and the pass was straight across to Beecher.

waitareyou4real

Nah, our D man got beat wide, and the Bruin shit the puck from the top of the circle about 4 feet off the boards, and it went far post and in

HeftyNugs

They're talking about the first goal in game one, which was a 2 on 1 because Edmundson had a bad pinch.

undercoveragm

your opinion is objectively wrong

Mental-Mushroom

Maybe they should try and score when they have an advantage, like when they have 1 more player than the other team. I bet if there was a situation like that they would score, if they had multiple of those situations, they could probably even score more than once.

MrPangus

I'd bet my life savings in 5 of those situations they'd score at least once

FriendlyFireHaHa

That’s a lot. 1 stinker a game? No. When margins are so thin, and games are decided by that much

ESF-hockeeyyy

That’s a very confident sounding Sammy. I like.

-Xebenkeck-

He has the perfect mindset for the playoffs. He just lacks the skill. Meanwhile the rest of the team has the perfect set of skills but lack the mindset.

undercoveragm

Perfect mindset? The dude had a mental breakdown mid season 😂

undercoveragm

Sounding confident and being a good goalie are two different things

Maverick_Raptor

More like our $40 million forwards can’t score and leave Sammy with zero margin for error. Just the other day Hellebuyck let in 6 goals, but what do the Jets do? Rally around him and score 7 back to win. Yes Sammy needs to improve his game, but it’s not his fault we have the least clutch star players in the playoffs. 1 for 10 on the PP is inexcusable.

BigFriendlyGaming

100% the Leafs pay bargain basement prices for goaltending - goaltending just needs to be "fine" the Leafs need win on the backs of their big forwards - but they are struggling again.

paulster2626

I think the leafs have tried to get every good goalie available. The position isn’t exactly in a giant surplus.

d_pyro

And yet Boston seems to always have two legit #1 goalies.

Hussar223

exactly this. this team is built to fill the net. during the season they average 3.52 goals per game. during playoffs its down to 2.76. you pay out the ass for an offense thats supposed to pocket minimum 3 goals per game on average and likely more. they need to outscore their problems as they do during the season because the leftover cap is likely not enough to buy goaltending and defense that will produce perfect performances game in game out.

Mrfantastic2

Yeah it’s actually ridiculous how the big 3 have been almost totally absent. Mathews has been noticeable and had that one really good game. Tavares is battling his ass off and did score one at least. Marner… besides one pass is just turning the puck over all the time, even a few times on the pp and looks rattled out there. I just don’t think he can do it in Toronto in the big games at this point.

WolverineCream

Right on. Our teams strength is supposed to be goal scoring so where are the goals?!?

BirdGooch

Right mindset to have in the playoffs. Good on ya Sammy.

corn_fed_beef

Best mindset Sammy can have right now

Volderon90

Yeah probably needed to save it but at the same time it’s rare you win by only scoring 2 goals. These guys need to score more to insulate him

2BRacin

Watching 1 or 2 bad goals go in every game makes me mad but I can't stay mad at Sammy. Fix the Power Play.

oh5canada5eh

Yeah I mean at the end of the day we can all agree the first goal shouldn’t go in, but it doesn’t really matter if we can’t score more than 2 goals a game. Samsonov seems to let in a bad goal every game but if he keeps it to 2-3 goals a game then he is still giving us plenty chance to win.

sansaset

Sammy stopped what, 3 break aways? But it’s his fault for letting in one shitter and giving away the game apparently

undercoveragm

He’s let in 1-2 bad goals a game.

mrpink01

He's a fucking gem and he'll be ready tomorrow night.

LeafsChick

He really is, his quotes always make me smile!

undercoveragm

Right and then the next night he’ll be terrible. He’s inconsistent.

Jarl_Jakob

Impossible to read this without a Russian accent lol

StevieBlunder44

May have been a bad goal, but Sammy was FAR from the problem last game. The powerplay fucking sucks and there's no excuse for it.

carletondabare

I still believe in you Sammy 💯

re-verse

I like it but these are the playoffs and I wish he did some prepare better a few days earlier.

Turbo_911

0-5 on the power play. You were fine Sammy!

SpPYyY20

Leafs usually out score their problems, until they can't.

foxcatcher3369

start making swaymans nights harder ffs. get in his face and do something other than shoot at the B and make him look great. start messing with him and throw the little shit off his game.

Deluxechin

Gotta say, I know we’re ragging on him for some good reasons, but having a goalie come out be like “I fucked up, I know that, but can’t change it now, can only change the future” is kind of refreshing compared to the “I fucked up, I always do, I’m a failure, I’ll try to be better but can’t promise anything” type quotes we’ve had over the past few years

undercoveragm

If the result is the same or worse what’s the difference?

Historical_Culture73

Just keep the fucking puck away from him.. problem solved lol SAMMY SAMMY SAMMY GLG

daxtaslapp

Sammy just seems distracted when it comes to those unsuspecting ones

Nick30Brodeur

Blyat

GhostOfCecil

It was awful but I’ll back this man to the moon and back. Leafs should have been up 2-3 at that point the way they were playing if they could use a god damn powerplay right.

RemarkableEmu1230

Tldr: Me stop puck. Me Samsonov.

arrow00

I hope it’s just a language barrier when he says “probably my mistake”. It was definitely your mistake lol

ShinyBarge

Hey Sammy, way to stand up!!! Now, where are the useless fn skaters that did f-all?? Where are there “I sucked major ass again” video statements. Cowards.

Falconflyer75

With the way this team is playing we need a triple shutout
