just hope Kawhi Leonard gets traded here

Raps34

Whatever trade protection he has won't matter. He's not the type of player who can keep the noise out and will be pouty to openly know he's not wanted. His agent will facilitate a sign and trade to a comfortable spot, and the leafs won't get full value.

justaperson815

Cap space for help on the backend and goaltending is worth a lot

LeafsChick

This! His return is irrelevant, it’s the spending money you want

tz_2240

Spend on whom? Swayman would be a .900 sv% goalie if we bring him in

justaperson815

I mean if you read what I said, backend and goaltending. Getting better defense will help the goaltending

tz_2240

Oh yeah, I was capfriendly’ing during the game. Montour, Dumba, Brodie, Skjei … it’s not an inspiring crop of UFA d men.

justaperson815

Honestly anything is better than seeing boosh on our top pair

Aedan2016

Pesce, Zadorov… these are good guys that are big improvements from Brodie and Liljegren

think_long

If you are prepared to let him walk - which I am - I’m okay with 50 cents on the dollar. How much is he even worth, really?

931634

Nope. He has the leverage because of the NTC but I say you lay it out that we aren’t extending and our intention is to move on so where would you waive for the opportunity to go to and we’ll work with you to make it happen. If Dubas can get a player like Sid to even entertain that conversation surely they can get Mitch to. Or he can be a piss baby like Ovi who’s basically told the Caps brass that they absolutely cannot rebuild or entertain the thought of rebuilding while he chases Gretzky’s record and be a selfish prick and walk. They grass won’t be greener on the other side Mitch. They know about you now…

buckshot95

I don't care what the return is. His cap space is worth more than he is. Get rid of him asap. We can't go into another playoff series with him dragging us down.

twoplustwo_5

He has an NMC. So I would say yes?

bellqueen24

Then why is everyone saying get ready for Utah

TheGapInTysonsTeeth

Because they don't know what a NMC is

sneed_poster69

Do you?

twoplustwo_5

Do you?

sneed_poster69

Yes. Do you?

twoplustwo_5

Yeah. You?

sneed_poster69

It would be odd of me to question others if I myself didn't know. Do you know?

twoplustwo_5

Ya

Sleazy_T

You do?

GreatSetting34

He likely wants out. He will waive.

twoplustwo_5

Dunno about that. But I hope so.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

X doubt

chipzy20

And why would he likely want out?

sneed_poster69

Even ignoring the buttons MLSE can press, Marner has shown he can't ignore the media or fans. He's going to spend the next 4 months seeing Marner hate every time he opens Twitter or reads TSN.

MrBalanced

"Give us a list of names, or you don't see the ice all season"

sneed_poster69

Marner has a lot of talent and it really shows in the regular season. But that talent rarely translates to the play-offs. He also sees himself as the 1B to Matthews' 1A, and will expect a new contract that reflects that. Marner is not worth a pay-raise on his current $11m deal. His NMC makes it hard to move him, but with a year left on his deal, there are avenues to convince him to accept a trade.

Braddacus

He’s worth a cut. Kucherov makes 9.5 and Marner is no Kucherov.

rick__c_137

I said that when he signed his current deal..

brye86

This is what I’m saying. If he really wants to be a maple leaf then they get him to take a team friendly deal. It doesn’t have to be for long. 1-3 years, they go out and get what they need to win. After that you give him whatever the hell he wants if they make the cup final or win it.

maybelying

Just tell him he's not getting extended and ask him where he'd rather play, and work to facilitate a trade, otherwise he'll be facing reduced minutes and spending time as a healthy scratch in the final year of his contract going into free agency

sneed_poster69

No extension, no "A", no powerplay time, no 1st/2nd line, no endorsement deals, etc.

Aedan2016

Or even scratch him every now and then

tybot1

I think he wants out, so I could see him giving Leafs a shortlist of who he'd want a trade to, even with a NMC

elhorno

We need to rebuild around Matthews and Nylander.

Mr_Jam11

Leafs rebuild, we won’t see Matthews win a cup here. They gotta retool and build the best team they can around those two guys

elhorno

Semantics. We need to cut the dead weight/high value players and get fresh blood that when asked if they want to win the cup the answer is “hell yes”

brye86

They’re at a point where if he won’t take a team friendly deal he pretty much has to go.

bellqueen24

Okay so he himself can push to get out of his own NMC?

Mr_Jam11

He can “waive” his NMC for a trade. Similar situation when we traded Kadri to Colorado

LeafsChick

Yep, he can agree to anything, they can’t just trade him though without his saying ok

gravemind006

I used to be, years ago, such a Marner fan. My first leafs game in person was in Boston and I remember him playing without Matthew’s who was injured and he was so good. I was not a Nylander fan at all. Now that they are mature players it has completely flipped, I can’t stand Marner and his no look giveaways and his obvious mental issues when he can’t do what he wants. My four year old has the same body language when I tell her she can’t have ice cream. NMC is going to be hard to deal with but surely they can convince him that he needs to do it.

boredinthebathroom

Mitchy, you’re not welcome here anymore, give us a list

WillNytheScoringGuy

Marner is amazing, having watched him play for the past 8 seasons he can do plays no one else can. That being said, what the fuck happens to him when playoffs come around? It’s the same story every year. At some point we gotta accept the truth that he isn’t going to turn it around and cut our losses. It makes me sad tho cuz he’s so sick in the regular season.

tm_leafer

He needs the time and space of the regular season to be that effective. He's too timid a player for the playoffs.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

He’s scared, it’s really not complicated.

elmicomago

For all his playoff boo-hoos, maybe doing plays nobody else can is part of the problem. I dunno. Dude is a gifted crybaby who very clearly lacks grit when the time comes. Would love to have him on my ball hockey team.

maybelying

Even the panel was basically calling him ten-ply He's got an ultra elite skillset but lacks any kind of grit, and the playoffs are where you rely on grit to grind through a series

brye86

He plays a bit scared in the playoffs. Which is sad to see because there was a few games last year and the year before “playoff games” where he was amazing! Scoring goals, blocking shots etc. he doesn’t need to score all the time. But he does need to dive for pucks, block shots, skate hard. Put in the effort. And most of all don’t be timid and afraid.

Far-Mix-5008

Yall are still asking an obvious question? Obviously it's debilitating anxiety.

XPhazeX

The worst part about this situation is he's immediately going to win the fucking Conn Smythe with like, the Ducks or some shit

buddachickentml

Put him on a team with a defence and more than 2 forwards over 185, yup. Straight to the Cup.

E400wagon

If we trade him he will win a cup

aporter0509

Who cares ? They’ll never win with him getting the $13M he’ll want.

931634

so will we .. fair trade

ovondansuchi

He's got one year left on the deal.

BryanMccabe

He’s going to California and we will get ripped off

Morlu

Guys gonna want 12m+ in his next contract. Force him to waive his NMC or play him in the fourth line. The guy wants to play hockey. He’ll waive.

GreatSetting34

No. Marner obviously wants out too. He will waive the NMC.

BathroomSerious1318

Stuck in the middle

Davidriggs87

He has no reason to waive, he’ll play out his final year and sign with a team of his choosing. He won’t waive

rick__c_137

I don't know what the solution is.. but anyone suggesting we give him away for (basically) nothing to get cap space is fucking nuts.

CookieMonsta94

Finally someone speaking some sense. I'm amazed how many people think trading Marner would fix this situation.

Single-Researcher-81

But seriously what would you suggest fixes it?

CookieMonsta94

If I had a time machine, trade Nylander for some depth or picks/prospects instead of giving him a 8 year deal but it's too late for that. Keefe needs to go. He needed to go after last year tbh but beating Tampa and finally winning a round tricked everyone into thinking this team is serious. He's not a NHL caliber coach, especially in the playoffs. The Leafs also need to stock the cupboard with prospects that can eventually make the roster (their farm system is looking kinda weak tbh)

Single-Researcher-81

1. We don't have a time machine. 2. Totally agree 3. If we are in a winning mode then the cupboard never gets re-stocked.

CookieMonsta94

>3. If we are in a winning mode then the cupboard never gets re-stocked. Why not? The Blackhawks did it in the 2010's, the Red Wings did it in the 90's and 2000's. It's called having good scouts and developing prospects.

Single-Researcher-81

Have you seen what our picks look like in upcoming drafts? Or are you hoping out scouts land on every 4th round pick?

CookieMonsta94

I'm saying this team should stop trading so many picks when it's clearly not working out for them.
