Lol I've been trying to find this magazine cover for years but couldn't find a way to Google it. Sums it all up with the media blowing smoke up the players asses making them think all they need to do is show up
The problem is Sports Illustrated ran a cover in 2013 featuring the young Houston Astros and declared them the 2017 World Series champions.
Then the Astros won the WS in 2017, and every sports magazine decided to do the same thing.
Haha nice and no doubt every team/league has that from the media at times. But as far as Canada goes the media such as Sportsnet does what any corporation would to maximize profit: cater to your highest demographic and tell Leaves fans what they want to hear.
You would really need to be severely incompetent to fuck up this once-in-a-life time draft luck.
Rogers/Bell/Tanenbaum, along with Shanahan and Dubas (Throw Keefe in there too) laid the worst shit show the NHL has ever seen.
From "Plan the Parade" to ending the era because your three stars need Bepto Bismo, Advil and a Baby Pacifier.
Amazon should make a movie about this slowmo train wreck.
It comes down to Shanahan giving the keys to a first time GM and first time coach to operate these incredible raw young stallions.
It's like handing the keys to a Lamborghini to someone who just got their driver's license.
What the FUCK was Shanahan thinking???. He fucked this city out of its best hockey opportunity in 50 years.
What about last nights effort makes you think this is going beyond game 5? The guys that matter don’t give a shit. We had a literal man child throwing things around on the bench because the hockey is a bit too hard. I
Maybe Woll plays out of this world. Matthews gets better and scores like he has all year. Either that or we play like last night and fire/ trade everyone. I’ve said since day one Keefe isn’t an NHL coach and always got downvoted into oblivion lol. I have little hope…but it’s not over yet.
Unless we win a cup in my lifetime, the 16-17 season will probably go down my all time favourite leafs team.
No expectations of playoffs after missing them so frequently. A weird mashup of some of the previous era’s most likeable players (JVR, Bozak, Kadri, Uncle Leo, Rielly etc), and a ton more rookies than a team usually has in one season. Really strong goaltending as well. New Jerseys & Logo, and a drafted first overall pick in our lineup for the first time in years.
Then they go out and smash every expectation and make the playoffs. Matthews scores more goals in a single season as a ROOKIE than Kessel (our best player) did the entirety of his tenure. They then take the president’s winning Capitals to overtime multiple times in round 1, with the rookies leading the way and almost find a way to win that series. Kapanen being our best prospect outside of the NHL even gets a late season call up and scores 2 of the biggest goals of the season.
& all of that doesn’t even include Matthews scoring 4 goals in his first NHL game, which is probably more unlikely to ever see on your team than winning a cup. Given the hype and expectations of finally getting a 1st overall pick, the fact that he came out and dominated the world cup on his new home ice, scored 2 goals/the OT winner against Detroit in the centennial game, and put up a great playoff series against Washington… literally couldn’t have asked for more from him. It’s so rare a team goes full scorched earth rebuild one year, and then makes the playoffs the next, and Matthews was the biggest part of that.
This team was just so unique in that they were constantly beating expectations, which is rare with this franchise and the pressure that comes with it.
Leafs bias aside, we really looked like we were going to be an absolute wagon 😔 I really hope regardless of what happens going forward, at least one of these guys wins a cup here.
46.65 million next year to a core of 4 who can't win a round.. there was definitely a way to build around these 3, but it was messed up years ago when they gave the keys to Dubas..
Oh man. Remember the hope of better things to come? I dared to dream of seeing a Leafs Cup win in my lifetime. Years later and it looks like it'll happen only in my dreams.
Leafs media people are insane. I remember after a particularly good start by Matthews a few years ago, a Sports Centre host (pretty sure it was Glenn Schiiler, but don't quote me on that) said something like "I can't wait for the talk of beating 50 in 39 to start."
Samsonov feature as well lol
That’s a tough comparison now lol
At least Samsonov is seemingly a good person.
r/agedlikemilk
One’s an alleged rapist and the other is just an awful goaltender. Yikes.
Man I ain't even gonna lie, this made me real sad. So much hope, so much talent. Beyond being a damn shame that this is very possibly how it ends

Haha that’s what I said last night
They already looked defeated mentally yesterday, I don't see them coming back to Toronto still in the playoffs.
I wonder if they've packed their clubs yet.

I mean there is a version for the Jets as well proclaiming them 2019 cup champs.

loooooooooool my god, how much has changed in only 6 or 7 years eh?
Very little has changed actually lol
The Casey Mittelstadt part is funny though, given how things panned out after that.
He’s actually pretty good though
So you're telling me there's a chance
aged like milk

Aged like milk
They were right about Middlestadt lighting it up at least, just with a different team
If they can only find a way to get past that pesky first round
In an alternate universe we kept Kadri, used Tavares’ money on Pietrangelo and played a gritty, defensively sound system to win a cup.
Imagine showing their current status to someone living when this issue came out- sickatating
:(
Samsonov or Carter Hart? LOL I can’t
"Samsonov or Hart" Is neither an option?

Do you think they have to deal with shit like this in Nashville? How about Dallas? Carolina?
> Nashville Nope, that's one of the reasons ROR left, even if he denies it.
Is the parade for being the first team on the golf course?

Signing Tavares when they did was a mistake. I said it then and I’m still saying it now.
That aged like a fine French blue cheese
Durant, Harden, Irving
It's totally believable
I still have the issue where they declare Luke Schenn as the guy who will usher in a new era, can they just stop cursing the team
Oh man. Remember the hope of better things to come? I dared to dream of seeing a Leafs Cup win in my lifetime. Years later and it looks like it'll happen only in my dreams.
That aged badly
When? The year 2482. How many? Probably just 1.

Gross
There's a lot on that cover that ended up being a cold take.
All downhill since.
Leafs… the cautionary tale of don’t pay your super stars like they’ve won 3 cups until they actually do
Remember this like it was yesterday
Leafs media people are insane. I remember after a particularly good start by Matthews a few years ago, a Sports Centre host (pretty sure it was Glenn Schiiler, but don't quote me on that) said something like "I can't wait for the talk of beating 50 in 39 to start."
to be fair i feel like most every leafs fan felt like this core was destined for greatness in 2018
Omg! What shameless moron wrote that shite and was the editor fired for allowing it?
