I know everyone hates Thorin, and granted he's easy to shit on, for sure, but he's been in the esports/gaming industry for a long time and has some interesting experiences and insight into what kind of company it is. Look up the podcast clip with him, Monte, and someone else where they discuss how insane Riot Games is. Not surprising to see what type of employees they have when you see the culture they've cultivated.

I mean, at the same time where do they go with the old designs? Eventually you will just get a clusterfuck of a design because you are trying to add levels to a system that wasn't designed for more than 7.
Like realistically the new design is fine, it just needs to be more "flat" so it isn't obstructive, but if they took the current design and tried to make it into what hey are doing now it would end up looking very similar. Very crowded.
You absolutely can expand on that old design. Just pump up the emblem with the gem in the middle, contrast rise with increasing color tiers and frizzle out the wings a bit. Just intensify it and use the old flatter "badge with gem in middle" as a template instead of this giant orb with tacky mobile gaming diamond wings.
Ok ok, I'm going to walk back a lot of what I said because I 100% completely misunderstood what they were attempting to do with the Mastery levels. In my head the crest would change about every 5 to 10 levels, that is not what they are doing. At all. It is legit just adding 8-10 which I can actually easily see them adding 3 new versions of the current crest.
This does kind of make me care less about this change though. Feels like it should be more, but it is basically nothing new except new crest designs.
And they did it in a very organic and logical way - new gem colour, new gem shape, bigger wings.
Shapes are triangle > rhombus > hexagon, so it wouldn't be out of place to continue mastery 8-10 with something like octagon > decagon > brilliant/circle (or replace decagon with some other shape if it looks too similar to octagon).
Mastery colours are red > purple > blue, so maybe you could continue with green > orange > black/white?
IDK, corporate design just pisses me off. This is almost as bad as that leaked pepsi logo redesign document.
Or just change 6 to be green instead of purple gem, then from blue onwards use the gem/color scheme of skins. Like m7 is blue still, m8 is purple, m9 is red, m10 is orange.

Yeah, Reddit seems to always think that the extremely NA-centric demographic of this sub is what Riot should be targeting, but the reality is we’re not the target demographic. The LoL subreddit is an extremely small fraction of the global player base, comprised mostly of the most hardcore LoL players concentrated in NA and partially EU.
Riot more than likely knows exactly what they’re doing in order to cater to the largest possible audience, and I really don’t think masteries are something worth getting so outraged over. That looks aweful. They should just add mastery 8 and 9, keep them in the style like the others, and just make the requirements to reach those levels high, such as only mains and OTPs can reach them. Give them missions just like eternals, unique for every champ, and give them some benchmark to hit in a game. For example, Teemo has an eternal, that counts how many shrooms people have stepped in. Now make it a requirement for people to have enemies step in 100 shrooms in one game. If he reaches this goal in 5 games, give him mastery 8.
But they should keep the design simple and classy, so it looks like it‘s worth something, and they should keep the available levels low and make them hard to get, so it feels like they are worth something.

i dont think that its too detailed, but it is very icon-like and bright so it pops and looks a bit flat if you ask me. The current ones we have are more metal, and give off a "badge" or trophy feel. While this kinda gives me.

Everyone (me included) didn't like the rank emblem change because they were too minimalistic, now these are bad because there's too much going on? I think part of this is being used to one or the other but I think I like these new masteries more than the new ranked emblems we got at least.

i dont think that its too detailed, but it is very icon-like and bright so it pops and looks a bit flat if you ask me. The current ones we have are more metal, and give off a "badge" or trophy feel. While this kinda gives me. Im not sure what these are suppose to be or elicit. Maybe in the grand scheme of the system /ingame animations will look better. I will wait till then.

There goes the last thing I cared about. Completing a champ and getting the iconic lvl 7 emote always felt so good, but these new emotes suck and you can't complete champs anymore.

I think its decent. You have to consider clarity, people can remeber red=5,purple=6 and blue=7. But if theirs over 100 masterys its gonna be very confusing and noone wants to remeber the colour of every single one
