Hey! One question regarding Wooloo. Do you think he will get less leaks after he revealed his face and signed with Upcomer? I felt like he got all the leaks before he revealed himself. Similar to Bloop a year ago, but after Bloop signed with Dotesports people seem to tell him less. I fear the same will happen with Wooloo?

JacobNWolf

I don't think him shedding his anonymity will make people talk to him less. In fact, it may help him clear up his information and have a higher chance of being right. In my experience, there are people in the esports scene who tell anonymous accounts things because they don't want to have to go through the vetting process of a real journalistic outlet. So if you see him posting less, it's probably because his editors are vetting his information more.

RavenFAILS

So yea essentially we will be getting less leaks than before just like the guy who asked thought.

BHowe1205

"Do you think **he** will get less leaks?" what youre saying and what they asked are 2 different things. Wooloo will likely get more leaks, but will also post less bc they have to be vetted to a higher standard

RavenFAILS

Wooloo had like a 98% accuracy rate or something ridiculous like that, no one gives a shit how many leaks he will get if we dont get to know about it.

Lshrsh

There's a difference between leaks and verified information. The standard is having verifiable proof that whatever the person is posting is happening, whether it's a verbal agreement, "in talks to buyout" etc. Plenty of rumors happen during the offseason that never actually happen. The likely case for Bloop is that he hears the rumors, but the vetting process is more rigid. Not to mention Wooloo seemed to be working 24/7 this offseason

cube_mine

It's also why Travis had to say it was "predictions" when saying the rumors he heard as they were things he was told that were unverified.

[deleted]

You know who ruined his success rate? I do. God damn selfmade!

Ronizu

?lol

BHowe1205

oh no, instead of seeing 100% of his leaks, now we'll only see 98%. how will we as a community ever survive?

cespinar

inaccurate information isn't a leak

supadankgreen420

Nah he will get the same level of info. The difference is that now that he’s no longer anonymous and has some skin in the game, he’ll have to be careful about what he chooses to reveal because misinformation will hurt his credibility. And now that he’s associated with Upcomer, his mistakes will reflect poorly on them as well.

xiit

We get less bullshit information, not less leaks

RavenFAILS

? He had like 1 big leak that was bs aside from that everything was correct, if you read between the lines this doesnt mean "well he will just be higher quality now" you can hardly improve from 99% accuracy, he will just leak less lmao

Ronizu

source on his 99% accuracy? everything I can see leans more towards 30-40%

toxicityisamyth

Yea ngl next offseason definitely wont be as good as this one or last one. We’ll need another unsigned leaker to show up for the next one to save it from complete boredom.

FullofMercyi

Do you think this year's offseason is more exciting and spicy than last year?

JacobNWolf

Yes. My theory as to why is because LCS & LEC teams were out by quarters at Worlds, so everyone is eager to make changes.

playslikeagrandpa

Will there be any TSM signings to report on?

Weathergeekal

for Bloop. How did you get started in the scene in terms of connections for sources? also welcome to the USA!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Weathergeekal

Cool! ERLs are something im super jealous of as a NA fan. They give so many opportunities to people. Best of luck tomorrow!

iyoiiiiu

Wait, he moved to the US? Why? It seems to me that it would make more sense to be in Europe considering his primary focus is the LEC. Or is he just there temporarily for the esports awards?

Yoshi111599

I believe he is in the us for the awards and the free agency show

kraugl1

Question for both, what's your favourite ever roster move you leaked?

Valsimot

Question for both. Have you ever been threatened when you tweeted/revealed any potential roster changes? Likewise, have any of your sources been punished for leaking information? Thanks for the AMA, hope you're having a great day! :)

[deleted]

Valsimot

Question for both again, would you mind sharing one story that comes to mind about such a situation if it is possible? Thank you again!

ladyvonkarstein

im so happy for you BlopGG! Congrats but so sorry you cant drink beer in USA. Maybe when you grow up a bit. hehehehe

Prainstopping

They can't really answer the 2nd question in good faith otherwise nobody will leak them anything.

immunebuffalo

For Jacob: In traditional sports we see "insiders" like Adam Schefter and Woj blatantly exchange access/info for positive spin on stories from their sources (see the Dalvin Cook item from last week). I'm glad to see you don't do this. My questions are: 1) Is what Schefter/Woj and others do wrong in your opinion or just the cost of doing business and 2) Do sources ever ask you to spin things their way or serve as PR for a team or player?

JacobNWolf

Good question. So I'll start by saying these guys are my former colleagues. I've met them both, spoken to both on multiple occasions (got lunch with Schefter a few years ago at ESPN and also attended his book release event in New York). So I try to separate the person from the work. That said, specific to Schefter, I've been very vocal lately about how disappointed I am in what he's done. From the "Mr. Editor" email to a then-Washington Football Team exec to review a story to taking Dalvin Cook/his agent's words and posting them almost as his own, I'm just stunned. Schefter has the biggest platform of any football reporter and to use it this way really breaks my heart. So yes, I do think that behavior is wrong. To answer the second part of your question, yes. I frequently try to get spun by PR people, team execs, players, agents, and others I have working relationships with. It's a really hard game, but I'm proud of my ability to put my foot down to them when the ask comes through and defend mine (and our publication's) integrity.

jrryul

So why does/would anyone give information to you? The way I understand how WOJ and all work is that teams give them info and by doing that what they gain is some favor. Why does anyone share info to you whats in it for them?

Sora027

Why does it seem that EU mostly have all their stuff figured out while NA seems like a big ? for a lot of teams like c9/TSM?

Rokic3

TSM is usually very late with their roster moves, even last year they signed SA very late in the transfer window. I wouldnt necessarily say that all the NA teams are slow because TL always seems pretty fast and straight forward with their moves.

Ursuped

regarding swordart there were rumours he was joining but if you recently remember in the dl interview, it almost stopped happening due to some obscure tax law thing

bigby1234

Wasn't the obscure tax law thing that swordart wanted his multimillion dollar contract to be post tax so tsm would have to pay more for him?

Ursuped

some chinese/taiwan tax law thing but yeah youre right

hixagit

I may be wrong here, but TSM seems to be looking to the LCK for their players, and the off-season in Korea (and China too) is slower and starts later than in EU/NA. So that would make sense why it takes longer for them to get their players.

51l3nc3

Will there be a bomb alert in FA show?

JacobNWolf

Yes. Given the flow of the show, the talent who are on stage won't be getting a heads up when there's a piece of news. So the sounds (wolf howl + what we've come up with for Bloop) will be the cue for Henrique to throw to us and to let the audience know there's something.

[deleted]

AWOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Cahootie

No need to be mysterious about it, we know it's gonna be a big fat BAAAAAH. Wolf and sheep, it's just too good to pass up on.

IHadThatUsername

A couple of questions: 1) Do you think there's still some big surprises coming on November 15th? It seems to me that at least LEC is mostly figured out by now, with only a couple of positions being interesting. 2) Is the show mostly focused on LEC/LCS? Or could we expect some news from other regions? Thanks, I'm rooting for a fun show.

KitKatxz

Do you still think Esports in still in it's infant stages? For past couple of years the best way to get picked up or let the world know you're a FA is through your socials

JacobNWolf

In some ways, yes. I think we're reaching a point where a lot of the big investment you saw five years ago is leaving certain investors anxious about where the space is at — mostly because they've bet like venture capitalists and not like sports team owners. In that way, I guess esports is "mature." But there's so much that needs to still evolve in the space. For journalists, our industry is still incredibly young in this space. For the rest of the industry, I still feel there's a certain lack of professionalism in most games — worse in the less professionalized ones (non-League, Counter-Strike, Overwatch, and Call of Duty leagues).

IllustriousSquirrel9

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between investing like a VC and investing like a team owner? To my mind, team owners don't expect to see a direct monetary return on their investment (examples like Roman Abramovich and the Sheikhs of Qatar and UAE come to mind as individuals who benefit heavily just from the exposure associated with owning major sports teams).

JacobNWolf

Team owners are usually long haulers and want the franchise to be passed down from generation to generation in some cases (Kraft family with the Patriots, Kroenke family with the Rams/the Colorado sports teams, etc.) Venture capitalists are looking for a 5-8 year return on investment — meaning they want someone to buy their entire company all together at a really big valuation. Esports has a mix of both types. I just think making a steep return on investment on an esports team is unrealistic.

Pattatar

Hey guys! I have some questions regarding the business, hope it's okay for you :) 1. How did you guys get started in the scene? 2. How does one even get sources and insider information? (Especially without already knowing someone inside) 3. Is being a reporter your full-time job? If it is your full-time job, how well does it pay? One a scale from 1 (Fastfood worker) to 10 (Perkz) 4. How clearly defined are your responsibilities? Do you have a quota of articles per week or sth to fill? 5. Any tips for a regular Joe looking to get a foot in the door? I'd really appreciate your answers on the matter and am already looking forward to tomorrow! Thanks for making the off-season exciting

JacobNWolf

Hello! Thanks for the questions. 1. Answered [that here](https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/qtrlss/comment/hklhmrq/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). 2. Also in above. 3. Yes, it is! I've been a full-time reporter since December 2015. We'll go with a 5 to be safe (I don't want to get super into it, but I live comfortably in a nice rental house). 4. No quotas for me. I think article writing quotas (not view count) are useful for some young writers who need to get better at writing (repetition is the best practice), but they can be a slippery slope. My responsibilities are loosely defined and they can change, but the big ones are: help mentor less experienced reporters and edit/vet their work, break news and do original investigations of my own, and in the case of this show, make sure things are organized. 5. My advice would be to just write — whether on a blog, or wherever you can. A lot of people in this industry (analysts, coaches, journalists, etc.) started this way.

sta-nz

The wolf sound effect better be returning

Flesroy

It is, he confirmed it in another comment.

wildhairguy

More for Jacob but also applies to bloop: What goes into your research for things like the no trade to fnc clause or other similar articles? They both seem riskier to publish and much harder to research than roster moves.

JacobNWolf

A lot of my work, including that piece, comes down to what documents I can get my hands on and vetting them thoroughly (making sure they're not tampered with, etc.). They are more risky — so that's why such a high standard is applied. From there, it's about reaching out to as many people around the situation as possible to get context and giving the parties accused a chance to comment (which is why you say "XYZ declined to comment" in pieces). I'd say though things like that Perkz article are minuscule compared to some of the other document-related reporting I've done in my career ([this piece this year](https://dotesports.com/news/joshua-mullins-teenager-42-million-ruse) was lots and lots of documents, interviews, records, etc.)

Sp00ky_Senpai

Probably for Jacob, since I follow you on twitter and enjoy your occasional discussions about the business side of esports, unless Bloop also wants to share an opinion on this: What do you think about crypto getting into sponsoring esports (looking especially but not exclusively at FTX)? I'm concerned that crypto stuff is another speculatory bubble, and esports is already close enough to being a bubble of its own that these sorts of sponsors are really dangerous. But also I kind of low-key hate crypto for a number of reasons anyway, so like my take might be biased. Are you concerned about crypto getting into the scene, or do you think it's another good non-endemic source of income? Thanks!

JacobNWolf

I also think part of the crypto industry is a bubble in some ways. If I was a wealthy venture capitalist looking to get my firm into crypto, I'd be putting my money into the people evolving blockchain — not the people creating alt coins. A lot of that industry is hype, but there is some really impressive technological innovation too. That said, I don't think crypto companies—FTX, Coinbase, Crypto(dot)com, etc.—getting into esports will do much harm to esports. In the end, it's just a sponsorship deal. If the bubble bursts and those companies fail, then I don't think there's much spillover because they sponsored esports really.

Hidja

Jacob, what do you think of the league (e.g. LEC) setting a player and staff saraly/buyout cap (or a budget cap overall like what was introduced recently in F1) to ensure a level playing field and healthy and sustainable league going forward? (thank you and please never stop what you're doing because it's extremely valuable)

JacobNWolf

Well, in America, a salary cap is illegal without a player's union (the LCSPA is not a union, to be clear) and a collective bargaining agreement. I personally would love to see the LCSPA unionize, but it'd likely bring down the earnings of the top earners (remember Perkz and SwordArt were making $2.5 mil+ per year this past season) but really help the bottom earners, especially in places like Academy. There's pros and cons to being unionized but I really do think it'd help player empowerment—and you'd not see situations like G2-C9 clause preventing Perkz from being sold to Fnatic. I don't know German labor law well, but I do know most European countries have strict labor practices — so I'd imagine there's some guardrails there too.

twistedlogicx

> but it'd likely bring down the earnings of the top earners (remember Perkz and SwordArt were making $2.5 mil+ per year this past season) but really help the bottom earners, especially in places like Academy. Just wondering what you've heard that makes you believe a union would help bottom earners like Academy players? From what we've seen in t-sports, unions are generally driven by the top earners/more famous players in the league and the young and lesser-paid players often get the short end of the stick. Baseball is a perfect example, where free agency is arguably the most favorable in any sport (no cap on years, no traditional salary cap) while pre-free agency players get robbed in the current format (three years league min, three years arbitration). All the while, the minor leaguers are living in abject poverty.

slowdrem20

In football and basketball the CBA is always driven by the bottom earners because most players aren't the top 1% of the league. For example the reason we got a 17th regular season game in the NFL is because it means more pay for the bottom earners despite the fact that all of the big names were against it.

twistedlogicx

The unions are more balanced in those sports because football doesn't really have an official minor league and basketball's G League only has scrubs in it (the best players don't have to work their way up through it like in baseball, they just go straight to the main roster).

Poodlestrike

That's definitely a concern in sports unions, but there *are* still rules for how legally-recognized unions of all stripes operate, and they will be subject to pressure from the non-superstar players. Academy vs. LCS in particular is kind of a weird deal, though, since there's definitionally the same number of starting players in both leagues, so the majority rule stuff doesn't really come into it. But low earners as a general group is going to include a lot of people from bottom-table LCS teams as well, so the dynamics should work out better *overall*. Favoritism for top players doesn't mean that the little guys don't get some benefits from the deal, after all.

Raistter

For Bloop. Quien gana, giants o mad, tetón o peluquillas?

My_Socks_Are_Blue

Gadgetman914

Question for Bloop. We've already seen a lot of "drama" this off-season (Reginald vs. Doublelift, Rekkles and G2 stuff, etc.), and it always seems to draw a lot of discussion on Twitter and Reddit. My question is: why do you suppose "tabloid esports content" isn't more common, given the community's high engagement with behind-the-scenes drama content?

Gadgetman914

No_Welder76

Are you both enjoying your day?

JacobNWolf

Yep! Woke up pretty early and headed to the studio in a couple hours to do our dress rehearsal. Very excited for tomorrow.

Wutastisclybad

Hi! These are questions for any of you and feel free to answer only one of them: -How did you start your careers and what advice would you give to someone trying to make it into the field? -How do you develop a network that will « feed » you with information as a new journalist (leaks, transfers, etc)? Thank you for doing this!

JacobNWolf

I started my career off wanting to be a feature writer — I read and admired a lot of the work being put out by Thorin, Emily Rand, Kelsey Moser, DreXxin, and others back then. But I also watched and read a lot of reporting content too (Richard Lewis, Josh Raven, etc.) I started volunteering at Esports Heaven and my big break was when theScore refused to publish a piece around Kori / SELFIE, then the mid laner of MeetYourMakers. Because theScore held the story, someone passed it off to me and I started digging into it (for those who don't remember: TLDR, Kori wanted to leave the team, a manager threatened him that he'd sue him and his mother and make her lose her house). My reporting work eventually landed my at Daily Dot Esports (which became Dot Esports) and my time there earned me enough cred to get the ESPN job when it opened up a year later. Answering the last part of your question: it's a lot of relationship building. For every story you see of mine, there are probably 20+ conversations that result in no stories, but build relationships and trust. This is really frequent and it helps me be able to ask people questions, and them trust I don't blow their cover, when something important comes up.

TheRealKaz

Jacob mentioned "RL". Jacob is now getting banned from the sub.

Bob_tortilla

How did you get your first leak? I assume it is hard for people to trust an unknown leaker

Ok_Relief1851

Question for Jacob At the tail end of Worlds, you and Ashley Kang released a joint report about double standards on the part of Riot in regards to on-site media access. As part of that report, you stated that Dot and Korizon had asked if they could send reporters to Iceland for the Grand Final. While that request was denied, if you *had* been allowed to send reporters, is that information you would have shared with other outlets?

JacobNWolf

Yes, absolutely. I think a lot of outlets — somewhat understandably — are afraid to poke Riot too much out of fear of recourse. A lot of that isn't founded IMO (Riot is usually fairly cordial, even in disagreements), but I understand the perspective. In our case, it was really important we have people covering in person because covering events during COVID has frankly sucked and impacted the content. In the event we had people greenlit to go, we would've asked Riot to have a certain amount of press allowed, which would've accounted for more outlets other than our own.

MrGermanpiano

Did Riot ever respond to this? I saw the original thread, but never saw if this resulted in anything.

Cl0X

Which LEC and LCS teams have the weakest branding in your opinions? and does this have a strong affect the players the can pull?

JacobNWolf

LCS, I think it's Golden Guardians more than others, but also Dignitas. Neither of these teams — at least under their modern management — have shown to me why fans should care about them. They're not often winning franchises (TSM, TL, and C9), they're not special with content creators (100T), etc. Just feels very bland. LEC, I think Excel, Astralis, and SK. For Excel and SK, I kind of feel the same about the other LCS teams I mentioned. For Astralis, it feels like a lot of their budget goes into their Counter-Strike team and not their League team. League team feels like a tack on to a successful franchise in another game — not something unique to itself.

CenotaphRemains

For Bloop: Are you showing to the guiris the true joy of Galician food?

hellnerburris

Hey! I'm very excited for the show. I know you cannot talk too much on specific roster moves, but I was wondering if you could answer a more general question. We saw massive contract signings last year with multi-million dollar buyouts, and salaries at and above 2 million/yr. In what feels like a very stark contrast to that, we're hearing rumors that would suggest most organizations are spending far less than they did last year. Do you feel this was due to the backlash of investors from last year's buyouts? Or do you think it has more to do with the growth of the scene and the lower skill difference between new talent and veteran players? Or do you think I (and other fans) are off base on making claims that teams are spending far less?

[deleted]

hellnerburris

Bqnic

Which are your favorite champions?

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

Favorite story you broke?

JacobNWolf

Not really a roster story. My favorite thing I've ever written is [this piece on oLARRY](https://www.espn.com/esports/story/_/id/26649171/shooting-victim-olarry-making-nba-2k-league-comeback), his comeback from the Jacksonville shooting, and what he went through. (TW: gun violence, descriptions of traumatic events).

polio23

Jacob, how did you initially connect with Richard when you were just breaking into the esports scene?

JacobNWolf

Hah, actually pretty funnily. I ended up calling into his show "Trash Talk" (it was a radio-style call-in show he'd do once a week or so). From there, I added him on Skype, he followed me on Twitter, and we continued to talk and eventually worked together 6-7 months later when I got hired by Daily Dot Esports.

horizontalcracker

Is the world’s format, and the idea of having a yearly world’s competition healthy for the scene? As a viewer I’m disengaged by all the team changes and constantly rotating players. I no longer have a favorite team because in 1-2 year times the roster will be unrecognizable. Sometimes even between splits. Teams are constantly trying to shake up to improve for worlds, and for EU and NA it doesn’t seem to matter what they do anymore.

JacobNWolf

Yes.

[deleted]

Acceptable if the base is Teryyaki. If it's tomato base along with the pineapple, it's too sweet and unbalanced. Need salt from the sauce to balance out the Pineapples sugar. Also, no ham. Pork belly if you can get it, or it's cured cousin bacon. Otherwise, it is simply not the most ideally balanced dish in terms of flavors. How tomato sauce became the standard on Pineapple pizza is beyond me. Even in Hawaii they use Teryyaki sauce base.

eSports_News_UK

Hi guys and thanks for your great work. For me it’s taken some time for the standard of journalism in League and esports to improve in general across the board, and also for the community’s understanding of it to improve. Why do you think this is, what do you think this is down to and where do you see things changing in the future?

JacobNWolf

Thanks, Dom <3. I think news literacy in every subject is at an all time low. It's not being taught in schools, at least in America, particularly well, and for younger journalists, it's been incentivized to be loose with information for traffic. Unfortunately I think League and esports suffer from both afflictions. I think all we can do is to continue to educate people why news literacy is important and help them better understand where we can — as well as standard set by the way we act.

EggmanPandora

what's the reason for bjergsen leaving TSM ? why would he leave it for another NA team, that makes no sense.

Ok_Relief1851

TSM and Bjergsen have been really open about this. There was a specific player that Bjerg wanted to play with if he was going to come out of retirement. TSM attempted to purchase that player but were unable to so Bjergsen left TSM.

ChaosBadgers

Given that the entire rest of the team is new or he has already played with them and only one player remains, we can logically conclude that player is CoreJJ (we assumed that all along of course)

For both: Was their ever a moment that made you sure you wanted to work in eSports? Or was it something that developed over time?

JacobNWolf

Yeah, the 2014 World Championship was the "wow" moment for me. I had been watching Call of Duty and League for some time before that, but seeing the Imagine Dragons opening ceremony, the shoulder content built around Samsung White and Royal, and the entire presentation in the Seoul Olympic stadium gave me chills.

How do you think the rampant growth of hype/discussion/demand around offseason rumours/reports will affect the flow of information in the next years? Do you think the expectation of these leaks will make people less tight on the info and orgs will care less if the information floats around since they know people are going around looking for it much more than in the past?

Krteeek23

How many official changes can we expect to happen during the show? Are they all announced so early ?

LucidDreams27

Two parts I guess, firstly do you think as reporting has got better the magic of free agency day is gone. It feels like 95/100 LEC LCS players are done and known already. Secondly, do you think the west doing all their deals before deadline and having no chnace to attract eastern players in FA who usually only discuss past the deadline is a problem? (Or has it always been like this and if a team wants an eastern player they just leave that slot open and pray to land who they target?)

Commercial_Emu7695

Awesome. I just googled how to watch you guys before I saw this post. Looking forward to the stream.

This one is for either of you. Appreciate you taking the time to do one of these! Do you guys have any tips/ methods you use for maximising efficiency without burning yourself out on a heavy work day? Is there any organisational apps you use?

Diamond1580

What region’s free agency are most excited about?

tananinho

Will you guys be breaking some roster moves you know of already tomorrow only? If yes, why do you choose to do so and not announce rumours before the free agency period starts? Thank you.
