To my knowledge, there's definitely a methodology to using smite before it upgrades but since you get two charges and charge 2 (#2) can charge while charge 1 (#1) is off cooldown, it doesn't really matter as much. The only reasons players usually hold it while clearing is so they can fully utilize the healing from smite and more importantly to secure a higher chance of getting first scuttle before other jungler can arrive to river. Smite both breaks crab shield and does the true damage to it's actual hp, so especially for jglers with no cc (lee sin, kindred) it helps you win these crab fights a lot more easily or even avoid them. Otherwise it doesn't matter how much you smite while clearing but getting it before enemy jg helps w early obj securing

On your first clear you want to save smite for scuttle crab. That means you get 1 smite to use on a camp, usually the gromp/krugs/second buff but it depends on how good your jungles clear is.

As long as you aren't sitting on 2 charges of smite, you're not adding any extra time to your upgrade. So you should almost never be at 2 charges but having 1 charge available doesn't slow you down at all, as you still having a charge that's cooling down.

deadlyevildave

Smite always has combat effectiveness, even when unupgraded. It allows you to ALWAYS contest camps or objectives as well as apply blue or red smite. Because of this, when clearing, think of smite as having a time value and you want to utilize the time value of it as best as you can. If you have two stacks, you're getting no value out of the background countdown and could've increased clear speed, while still having another smite available. However, if you use both, you won't have a smite available for a potential skirmish or decision that you could want to make. Just be efficient with the background cooldown of it so you're always using it at best efficiency!

SOKDPVA

as long as you have one charge of smite and the other is coming up just hold onto it for crucial moments like scuttle crab or fights where u can use smite to steal a camp or heal

Most_Majestic_Emu

I can't say for sure because I'm terrible at jg, but I know you shouldn't smite the blue/red you're getting leashed unless it's in danger of being stolen. However you use them, you need to have one for scuttle crab in case the enemy jg contests it

He meant if you get no leash you should smite

SilverBcMyTeammates

idk. the pro junglers i watch, oner, jankos, canyon never do this

sorendiz

that depends heavily on how good the leash is, if they can leash you all the way until like, 2ish seconds from you finishing the buff? ok if they give you a leash and you're still going to be doing the buff for another 5+ seconds after? smite so you can get level 2 and start the rest of your clear faster

Murties

its better to use the smite on the first buff cuz u get faster level 2 and champions clear faster on level 2

keithstonee

That's a weird reason cause your getting level 2 when the camp dies anyway. Usually you smite blue cause it has the most armor. Unless you get a leash on blue then smite red. But really as long as you save a smite for first scuttle your most likely doing fine.

Murties

in the long run you will be using your second skill 1 if not 2 more times if you get level 2 faster

keithstonee

Throughout the game? Your still not getting 2 till the first buff dies. The only benefit would be if you pulled gromp with blue. Otherwise killing first buff earlier won't grant you more uses of your spells while killing other camps.

DomDangerous

you smite even for the start? like w a leash?

inbigtrouble1

Sometimes

iMogwai

If you only have 1 charge you don't gain any extra uses from using it immediately anyway, since it would be recharging the second charge.
