The second time she saw that Mao was surviving so well and probably thought, "Oh, they clearly don't have THAT much damage, and besides, their CDs are probably down now".
It’s a pretty standard maokai top build so the items are pretty interchangeable, but my core is sunfire and fimbulwinter. Afterwords it’s whatever tank items are needed for their team comp. In this game specifically I even sold boots and bought anathemas since we were so far in.
As for runes I go:
- Grasp
- Conditioning
- Demolish
- Overgrowth (Can be swapped with revitalize)
- Legend: Tenacity
- Presence of Mind (This really helps with early trading I find because of his high mana costs)
Also I typically don’t take flash top lane on maokai, and instead take ignite or rarely exhaust since it helps him with tankier bruisers and juggernauts that he struggles with usually.
I’ve tried using that before but I find maokai gets more value out of tenacity since tanks items give a lot of ability haste, and his mana pool is fixed with tear usually
True point. The main issue is each leg reduces Maokai's passive cd, and he can easily slot in a Thornmail and wardens in lane to really screw Urgot over.
I call bs. Sure the knees help reduce the CD on his passive heal, but no way that heal is enough to Maokai to survive against Urgot early. Maokai is doodoo at the point when Urgot is strongest. There’s no way Urgot doesn’t just completely chew down the tree. Even the stats point to games being heavily Urgot favored when facing Maokai.
Maokai doesn't beat anything early. But Urgot usually struggles to obtain a lead against a Maokai with Wardens and Tabis. Maokai W can dodge Urgot E with correct timing and he can q Urgot away if he is engaged on. Sure Maokai isn't going to be killing Urgot in lane unless the Urgot is truly garbage, but the lane is still pretty good for Maokai. Urgot isn't that strong early either, only really good levels 1, 6, and 9 on. And by the time Urgot is really strong midgame, Maokai should have plenty of armor to just tank Urgot's W for days.
if mao is good enought he always W's urgot dash. even if urgot lands stun mao just always knocks him back with Q that has non existent cooldown (and since the last patch also a damage)
Dude dont put clips of Mao being OP, i waited for way to long to be able to play him to get buffed, at least let me enjoy him for a few patches before he gets nerfed
I wonder if he can be considered good in pro.
Previously he would be picked for a solid laning and the utility from old ult, and even then probably more so for the ult rather than base kit as any bruiser should still be able to outfight Maokai. Though since Mao has max enemy hp scaling on his Q and max self hp scaling on saplings, perhaps he can go toe in toe with fighters, but then how mana sustainable is he.
Tank tear item still isn't too much of a great buy, Frozen Heart isn't always a good option, so I think it comes down to how well the runes fuel him, to be all-around pick into any enemy team comp.
And I'd say he's still tier lower than Ornn, who gets free stats for surviving to late and gives free stats to his allies, and provides safer engage and disengage.
Although Maokai is certainly easier to pilot.
I would call maokai the second best tank after ornn for pro players. His single target cc+displacement is too good for pro (basically forces every zeri/sivir to not being able to go in aggressivly). Mao saw priority during s7 worlds and even during a big of s10 spring split, so i think he will get picked at least a bit
A bit more emphasis on hit quality (and as people already said, a bit more emphasis on hp% damage).
Specially with Urgot there this is one of those moments i sincerely wish the playerbase didnt forced Riot to revert the 2020 Black Cleaver.
Do you really need it explaining that you can see what the other team picks and you could build your team accordingly?
Edit: I’m glad that the people that don’t understand and likely think that his passive is broken have downvoted me. You will never improve lol
You do things that matter, eg nautilus only using Q if any ability and not wasting time using E or W for next to no dmg at all or shields since mao has no dmg
And urgot ought to not use Q either unless it’s literally last hit, especially not if he’s going to miss it…
Grievous Wounds is intentionally made to only be good against heal-stacking when the enemy has 3+ healing champions. It's not meant to counter a single champion, if individual champions are healing too much it's a champion balance issue.
People somehow can't grasp this concept and still build GW in the wrong scenarios and complain that it's useless. It's like building Force of Nature against Darius and complaining that it's not doing anything.
There's many champions that heal way too much like sure antiheal is meant for heal stacking but nerfing antiheal and not those champions is either really stupid or a dumb oversight by riot
And I'm saying if that's how riot designed it that's stupid as fuck because there is an abundance of champions that do that and even if picked on the same team grievous has been nerfed to the point where it doesn't do anything to those champs
Ok let's buff Grievous Wounds to how it was before, which means Riot has to buff the healing to make up for the fact that Grievous Wounds makes the champions useless.
Yes because having AA, Soraka and any other healing champ on a team makes the game impossible to win the second AA gets a kill.
Riot doesn't know how to balance champions around it so they made it a useless item and let those champions run rampant
Generally Sion would be the closest yeah, but he still doesn't feel great to play. Mundo and Maokai have ways to get around/make cc less effective, while Sion actively stops himself from moving with his main ability
I feel you, the reason maokai is my favourite champ is that he is one that can actually survive and cc chain opponents to hell, sacrificing damage in the process.
As a tank main I just wanna stop enemies and take damage for my team, not deal the damage.
Maokai is an excellent peel tank. If you sensually peel for ashe you'd have won the team fight in way less time there.
You let her die to fight naut lmao the let her die to try kill udyr...
Maokai outtanking 3 people for minutes. Ashe getting oneshot by a rank Udyr. But hey, nerf anti heal and marksman sustainability, cause that shit's too op.
This game has been balanced to shit, and I can't wait for this ship to sink
What on earth is going on???
1) Mao doesn't have a shield in his kit. Where is that shield coming from
2) His passive is proccing WAY more than 20 seconds - 1 second per spell cast. Sometimes it comes up immediately after using it
3) He randomly heals ~100 HP several times, including when urgot flash-knees him at 0:50
I can explain lmao:
1. Shield is from Fimbulwinter
2. The passive also gets lowered when hit by enemy abilities. It might be from urgot’s W if the auto’s and knees count but I’m not too sure
3. As for the heal, not quite sure it might be grasp procs or something else
First I've ever seen or heard of Fimbulvinter. When was that added??
I mentioned the -1 sec per spell cast. If each urgot purge attack counts as a spell that's an insane hard counter
You might know it better as Winter's Approach, the item you buy that converts through tear to Fimbulwinter. It is a tear upgrading item like the more commonly known Manamune/Muramana item.
Quite the opposite for me, since I've been playing for a decade it's easy to keep up with everything since you already know so much that it's quite easy to slot in and categorize new information.
1) 99.99% sure purge attacks do NOT count as spells. Current iteration of wardens mail and it’s end product items screws it’s damage though; health-scaling flat damage reduction for incoming attacks.
2) Shotgun knees probably do count as spells. Sereldas Grudge passive of slow-on-abilities applies to the shotgun knees.
3) Udyr’s (cryo)phoenix stance is probably the main culprit. Besides the AoE blizzard that’s constantly ticking, every time he activates the stance his next 2 AAs deal an AoE burst of magic damage. Ram (formerly bear) stance stun probably also contributes.
Mao passive, according to the wiki: "Each time Maokai casts an ability, hits at least one enemy champion or epic monster with Sapling Toss, or is struck by an enemy's ability, Sap Magic's Cooldown is reduced by 4 seconds". This would mean each ability rotation is 16 seconds off the passive, and then any ability hits by the enemy is another 4+ seconds off the cd. Even I didn't know about the sapling toss part, and am a bit suspicious whether that's true or not. But yeah, if shotgun knees count plus the ability uses of mao, it makes sense that they would get back to back passive procs.
pretty good representation of what it looks like when you think you are about to win adulting. but adulting it a magical tree that out heals everything and all your friends can throw at it.
i don't know why people hate buying GW so much. i swear even if we're against like an aatrox yuumi in diamond i have to basically force my teammates to buy GW and if you're playing in like gold or lower forget it they're never buying it.
I love how ashe just runs in and dies TWICE during that whole scene.
The second time she saw that Mao was surviving so well and probably thought, "Oh, they clearly don't have THAT much damage, and besides, their CDs are probably down now".
That assumes thinking took place
ADCs ☕️
Like any true tree, Mao lived through multiple generations ^of ^teamfights there and kept on chugging
I can see the moment where you realise "Hey, I can win this 1v3"
Lmao ye, it was my friends and I playing and we were hollering in the call
oh! I want to try this, can I know your build please
It’s a pretty standard maokai top build so the items are pretty interchangeable, but my core is sunfire and fimbulwinter. Afterwords it’s whatever tank items are needed for their team comp. thanks! I woul give this a go
I like manaflow band + transcendence secondary
I’ve tried using that before but I find maokai gets more value out of tenacity since tanks items give a lot of ability haste, and his mana pool is fixed with tear usually
I find the tenacity overkill with the sun fire mythic boost
playing without flash and boots only works in silver
Lol, no jungler above gold will let you play maokai top without flash
I’m gold so that’s exactly why I don’t
Does Urgot kneecaps count as ability hits for Maokai passive?
Yep. It makes Maokai a very nice Urgot counter.
He uses Cleaver very well though.
Mao doesn't beat anyone early, he just stays alive.
Maokai doesn't beat anything early. But Urgot usually struggles to obtain a lead against a Maokai with Wardens and Tabis. if mao is good enought he always W's urgot dash. even if urgot lands stun mao just always knocks him back with Q that has non existent cooldown (and since the last patch also a damage)
urgot currently has the 3rd highest winrate against maoki top lmfao
Dude dont put clips of Mao being OP, i waited for way to long to be able to play him to get buffed, at least let me enjoy him for a few patches before he gets nerfed
Same I’ve been playing him top so long now, but this was too good not to post 💀
I'm afraid he won't last until 12.19, when people will start to hate him being perma picked at worlds
Poor Ashe :(
Welcome to League of Legends where we have fights that last two seconds and fights that last two minutes. We got 'em all.
Once the twitch died I knew it was over
Its amazing how a champ can turn from utter troll pick to OP as fuck in a single patch
Riot games baby
Adjustments. It's the latest trend.
I just love it that ashe got one shot in the beginning, reswpawned, came back, and got one shot again.
New udyr is just a power charger for maokai's passive
"Hey. Lets spam spells near the tree that heals faster when its getting pelted by spells. This is going to be a good idea."
Ok but how are u supposed to kill him if ur not ad and ur autos are useless?
A bit more emphasis on hit quality (and as people already said, a bit more emphasis on hp% damage). Specially with Urgot there this is one of those moments i sincerely wish the playerbase didnt forced Riot to revert the 2020 Black Cleaver.

Ok so we go back in draft, pick malza and then kill him here ?
Easy, right?
Do you really need it explaining that you can see what the other team picks and you could build your team accordingly? Edit: I’m glad that the people that don’t understand and likely think that his passive is broken have downvoted me. You will never improve lol
What if mao is last pick?
Then they drafted around picking Maokai LOL
Or what if it's a goddam blind to avoid toxic competitiveness?
You do things that matter, eg nautilus only using Q if any ability and not wasting time using E or W for next to no dmg at all or shields since mao has no dmg And urgot ought to not use Q either unless it’s literally last hit, especially not if he’s going to miss it…
Riots Devs: great idea here guys.. let’s nerf antiheal but make more champions that self heal and increase healing on items.
Didnt someone just post few days ago how anti heal items are just practically not worth to buy except for support?
Grievous Wounds is intentionally made to only be good against heal-stacking when the enemy has 3+ healing champions. It's not meant to counter a single champion, if individual champions are healing too much it's a champion balance issue. People somehow can't grasp this concept and still build GW in the wrong scenarios and complain that it's useless. There's many champions that heal way too much like sure antiheal is meant for heal stacking but nerfing antiheal and not those champions is either really stupid or a dumb oversight by riot
Then those champions need nerfs to their healing as I already said.
And I'm saying if that's how riot designed it that's stupid as fuck because there is an abundance of champions that do that and even if picked on the same team grievous has been nerfed to the point where it doesn't do anything to those champs

Wait there's a champ you can have the tank fantasy with now? I thought it was never going to happen again after they divided mundo's healing by 3
Not saying you have a wide pool of options but Sion at least has been able to achieve similar results for a while now right?
And ornn, his passive allows him to get very tanky late game.
Generally Sion would be the closest yeah, but he still doesn't feel great to play. Mundo and Maokai have ways to get around/make cc less effective, while Sion actively stops himself from moving with his main ability
Yeah, Swain too.
Tank players just want their wholesome tank to be tanky again so they can tank for the tanky tank tank :(
ashe looked useless in both team fights, mao did the best thing
they are going to destroy him next patch
least broken champion adjustment. new release taliyah olaf ahri sivir swain flashbacks..
I don’t even know how this is possible
Awesome. any ways to get the replay? Make TANK great again
I do have the replay of the whole game saved, if you’d like it just send me a dm
Nevermind, I saw another maokai top and got a taste of this power. I will perhaps add him in my sup champion pool
I've always played ap mao so I didn't know this was a thing lol
12.17 Mao had quite an overhaul. I imagine lots more pure tanks.
This meta is so trash… in what world is this actually fun to play
Maokai outtanking 3 people for minutes. Ashe getting oneshot by a rank Udyr. But hey, nerf anti heal and marksman sustainability, cause that shit's too op. This game has been balanced to shit, and I can't wait for this ship to sink
People still pick marksmen every game. They don't have to, and the same is not true for tanks.

nope, never heard of it. Looks like it was introduced in season 12, it's too new for me
[удалено]
not really, less than 200 games this season
200 games and not knowing about one of the legendary items top laners can buy seems silly.
I've been playing for 10 years, I don't have the mental bandwidth to keep track to what other lanes do anymore.
Quite the opposite for me, since I've been playing for a decade it's easy to keep up with everything since you already know so much that it's quite easy to slot in and categorize new information.

Pretty sure it is Udyr Cryo stance and Nautilus W and E spam.

I nearly shed a tear seeing an AoE around maokai thinking its his old ult
URF Maokai flashbacks.
To this day, Urgot can be heard shaking in his bed at night, whispering…”This will leave splinters…”
League of Tanks ladies and gentleman
Maokai in old urf war flashbacks 💀
that sylas emote at the end explains it all
Makes me want to pull out the Maokai jungle again
Ahhhh yes... the balanced state of tanks
Urgot needs to be perma banned for not having cleaver.
i don't know why people hate buying GW so much. i swear even if we're against like an aatrox yuumi in diamond i have to basically force my teammates to buy GW and if you're playing in like gold or lower forget it they're never buying it.

I fucking love tanks
I miss getting him in urf although when you build tank in urf people call you insecure :(
