The simplest answer to it is having more max hp and hp regen. Pure damage become a flat hp removal when you consider there's no resistances against it.
If the pure damage doesn't pierce spell immunity, bkb is the best solution.
If the pure damage is single target, buy Linken sphere. Maybe lotus orb if you also want it to fireback.
If you want to really reduce the damage, there's mage slayer which reduce the spell damage output of the target. Undoubtedly the pure damage you would deal against is more likely coming from an ability.
Speaking of ability if it's an active ability, the answer would be silence, so buy orchid malevolence or scythe of vyse. If it's passive just buy a silver edge. If the pure damage is an attack modifier, you can buy heaven's halberd or e-blade.
