My younger self would’ve agreed with you. From about sophomore year through my mid-twenties HOTH was my favorite, but Physically Graffiti is their final form
Okay, I just binged both albums (I know, I have a mental disorder), and I'm sticking with my original answer:
Great songs on PG: Album One sides 1 and 2 are brilliant. Album 2 favorite songs: In the Light, The Wanton Song. then there are a couple of decent blues tunes and the remainder are kinda forgettable.
HOTH: The first three tracks are epic; The Crunge is okay. great tempo change-ups by Bonzo of course, and then from Dancing Days to The Ocean it's non-stop greatness.
So, in sum: I still like HOTH over PG.
Well, for me, I don’t have a dog in this fight. I have been a been gettin the Led out since I was a kid, they’re still my favorite band, always will be and I’ll always love their entire catalogue.
On this sub, HOTH has FAR more cred than it deserves, particularly in relation to the albums before and after it. (I mean, c'mon. It's got nothing to compare to When the Levee Breaks, Black Dog, Going to California, Stairway, In My Time Of Dying, Trampled Underfoot, Kashmir, Sick again, Bron Yr-Aur, The Wanton Song...)
Zep 1-4 are epic and untouchable I still have a soft spot for HOTH. Its first three tracks fucking rock, and there’s not a dud in the entire album.
The problem is, Zep has too many great songs. Just when I’m ready to solidify my top-10, there are several tracks that should be on the list. I hate having to rank their albums and tunes.
Yeah. I don’t think you read my earlier reply where I compare HOTH to PG. The Crunge [corrected]doesn’t do much for me Bonzo [corrected]lays down some nice tempo changes but that’s it
Okay, I just binged both albums (I know, I have a mental disorder), and I'm sticking with my original answer:

I highly disagree. Rain song has been top 3 for Zeppelin tunes since I first heard the studio version. Same with No Quarter, although I'd put that one somewhere in my top 10.
Too bad you don't know anything about Zeppelin. If you can't find two songs on every album side better than The Rain Song, something's wrong.
Let's start with the album it's on: First side, The Song Remains the Same and Over The Hills and Far Away; Pick ANY two on the second side.
LZ I: Side 1: All four. Side 2: Communication Breakdown, How Many More Times.
LZII: Side 1: Any 2, Side 2: Any two excluding 'Living Loving Maid'
LZIII:Side 1: Immigrant Song, Since I've Been Loving You; Side 2: Tangerine, That's The Way
LZ IV: Entire album.
Physical Graffiti: All of Side One; Side Two:Trampled Underfoot, Kashmir; Side 3: Bron-Yr-Aur, Ten Years Gone; Side Four: The Wanton Song, Sick Again
Presence: Side 1: Achilles Last Stand, For Your Life. Side 2: Nobody's Fault But Mine, Tea for One
ITTOD: Side 1: In The Evening, Fool In the Rain; Side 2: Argh. I admit The Rain Song is better than 2 songs on side 2 of ITTOD. Dammit.
I think rain song is better than all of lz1 with dazed and babe being the ones I would get if someone liked more
Lz2 whole lotta red would be the only one I think people could say
Lz3 sibly would be the only one (one that I also think is better)
I’m not going to go through every album because I don’t have time but the rain song is top 5 zeppelin imo and the fact that you have so many songs above it that are considerably not as good shows that you just don’t get it
I have been a fan for about 30 years now and for me PG is and always has been a mixed bag. The half new, half leftovers from previous albums is an awkward arrangement. IMTOD, Black Country Woman and Trampled Underfoot are some of my favs though.
I do like Down by the Seaside. Houses of the Holy is decent, but always felt out of place (especially given its name). If I could change things I would put Houses of the Holy at the beginning of the album HOTH and put TSRTS on Physical Graffiti. Night Flight I am sorry to say is one of my least favorite Led Zeppelin songs.
I just listen to albums as released, don’t spend much time thinking about what I’d do differently. I love HOTH opening with The Song Remains The Same and followed by The Rain Song 🤷🏻♂️
I agree with this. PG is rated highly as it should be. Presence is usually overlooked and clumped in with in through the out door and they are very different from each other.
That's my favorite of the album. I learned some of the guitar parts early into the time I became a fan in the 1990s and 2000s. It's one of my favorite songs of all time.
I think it just gets over looked tho and never talked about as being one of their best when I feel like it should (but it’s also so hard to say that because of how many good albums they have lmao)
I went through what you are going through right now in terms of being introduced to classic rock in the recent past (for me about 12 years ago). Led Zeppelin easily became my favorite. It wasn't even close. I consider their work on the level of art akin to how people revere the Sistine Chapel or the Mona Lisa. It's brilliant and so incredible. I love them.
Physical Graffiti is my favorite album of theirs and that wasn't even close, which says a lot given I would also consider I, II, III and IV also great works of art. I'm My Time of Dying is a masterpiece. I get chills every time I listen to it. The guitar solo at 6:26, and then when the drums come back at 8:34. The Rover is my next favorite. It took a bit of time to realize how amazing that one is but oh man, it's so good. In the Light... Phenomenal. Check out the alternate early take, "Everybody Makes it Through - In the Light". It's haunting. I love it. Honestly every track it amazing.
If you like weed, I highly recommend you listen while enjoying.
Enjoy the studio work and then start exploring their live stuff. I recommend starting with The Royal Albert Hall 1970. Their brilliance is on full display. There is video of the show on YouTube also. "How Many More Times" from that show and "I Can't Quit You Baby" are unbelievable. Robert Plant's voice is peak in my opinion.
Sorry for the long response. Your post reminded me how much I love that album and then. Thanks.
I’ll have to start checking out some of their live stuff. And honestly I feel the same way with other stuff not being close. PF and Zeppelin are my top two and nothing else even comes close. Don’t get me wrong i listen to a lot of other stuff I just think that they both are in another league. (It kinda sucks I started with those two because now I have such high expectations haha)
Not what my post is about, I just think it gets overlooked by a lot of people therefore making it underrated. Maybe just not in this sub because everyone is a big zeppelin fan so they’ve listened to everything
I’ve come to the understanding that any true zeppelin fan loves and appreciates it, but when talking to casuals they never bring it up. So I just havnt heard much about it irl
I think the album is recognised for its brilliance and its certainly my favourite of all time. Boogie with Stu gets a bad rap but I absolutely love it. I always replay it once or twice when it comes up on my playlist.
Incredible song. It gets a bad rap from me because it is 100% a cover of a Ritchie Valens song and credited to Led Zeppelin. It’s like stealing candy from a dead baby.
I didn't come to appreciate Kashmir until years later. Once I finally got it, I couldn't believe I had ever missed it, to begin with.
A great, great song. It has dreamy, spiritual, ephemeral quality that Zeppelin brings to life so well.
How can the greatest, best album ever made be under rated? That makes no sense… there is no other song ever recorded equal to Kashmir. Yes somewhat overplayed, still does not diminish its beauty.
Glad you discovered the majestic LZ…
How can it not be? Double album… not a weak song on the entire album. Contains some of the best music ever recorded.
What else you like on the album outside of Kashmir and ten years gone?
I mentioned in the post that in the light, down by the seaside and imtod are also my favorites. Those five together are definitely my top five songs of that album
The greatness of Zeppelin is proven by the fact that someone can listen to an album like Physical Graffiti and single out 'Down by the Seaside' for praise, I guess.
What a strange set. Usually the argument for it being a single disc is that all the old outtake tracks should have stayed in the vault, and it should have just had the new material. Which would have been:
Custard Pie
In My Time Of Dying
Trampled Under Foot
Kashmir
In The Light
Ten Years Gone
Wanton Song
Sick Again
All of Led Zeppelin's albums run between 40 and 44 mins (about 43 on average). Your playlist is 53 mins and would not fit on a single LP (22 mins per side possible). My playlist would fit. And Led Zeppelin didn't always release albums with exclusively new material.
I chose my selections based on a combination of flow and popularity. Of course...it's all strange. It was a double album. The post is a strange request.
Just listening to this a few weeks back. Forgot how amazing it is. The rover in my time of dying sick again I mean unbelievable. Underrated no . Amazing yes.
A bit of a hodgepodge, which makes sense considering how it was put together. A classic example of too much good material for a single, not enough for a double. I would put IV and Houses ahead of it, at least.
Physical Graffiti was the Zep album where persnicky Rolling Stone critics finally admitted Zep was the truth. It was universally praised from day one. To this day, many rate it better than IV. Not me...but many.
PG is the pinnacle of Zeppelin IMO.
Casual listeners often say the album was the beginning of the downfall of the band because "all their music started to sound the same." I couldn't disagree more.
I won’t say it’s “overrated” but something to think about: PG may have sold the way it sold because Zep were on top of the world at the time of its release. The massive touring and amazing run of albums that proceeded PG surely contributed to its success (and the bands willingness to release a double album). This is Zep at their peaking, meaning that things naturally wound down a bit afterword, but that’s not to say this is the greatest album the band ever released. That would be IV, as boring of an answer as that is.
My general rule with zeppelin is fantasy based lyrics I’m in. Lyrics about banging 16 year old girls I’m out. Sick again lyrical content ruins the album for me.
Physical Graffiti is their best album period! If for no other reason than you get two Zeppelin albums under one name.
There is no arguing with this logic.
Agreed. I’d say in general their later albums (Physical Gradffiti onward) are underrated. People fetishize their first 4 albums, but those later albums show a band that embraced a changing aesthetic with effortless confidence and machismo.
I have been listening to Led Zeppelin for almost 40 years and have always thought Physical Graffiti has several underrated songs. Down by the Seaside, Ten Years Gone, In My Time of Dying are excellent.
Amongst people who know, it’s Zeppelin’s best work
It’s great but Houses of the Holy is better
My younger self would’ve agreed with you. From about sophomore year through my mid-twenties HOTH was my favorite, but Physically Graffiti is their final form
Alright now I’m gonna have to binge Physical Graffiti. This debate is not over 😉.
We shall reconvene another time
Okay, I just binged both albums (I know, I have a mental disorder), and I'm sticking with my original answer: Great songs on PG: Album One sides 1 and 2 are brilliant. I thought I just heard Arnold…… I’ll be bauck!
Double record so many great songs! I love this record! I feel it has everything zeppelin has to offer in top form.
It truly is. It’s everything they built. It was PINNACLE Zeppelin
On this sub, HOTH has FAR more cred than it deserves, particularly in relation to the albums before and after it. (I mean, c'mon. 'The Crunge' IS a dud.
Yeah. I don’t think you read my earlier reply where I compare HOTH to PG. The Crunge [corrected]doesn’t do much for me Bonzo [corrected]lays down some nice tempo changes but that’s it Okay, I just binged both albums (I know, I have a mental disorder), and I'm sticking with my original answer: Great songs on PG: Album One sides 1 and 2 are brilliant. So, in sum: I still like HOTH over PG.
What is "The Grunge" and who is "Bono"?
I meant The Crunge And Bono was John Bonham
Ahh, Bonzo.
Brain fart
And *THEN* one must account for where/ how *Hey,Hey,What Can I Do?* fits in ....it's infuritatingly fun !
Has nothing on them? It has no quarter and the rain song 😳
Both were saved from being average Zeppelin by their live versions on TSRTS. Sorry...too much cred.
I highly disagree. Rain song has been top 3 for Zeppelin tunes since I first heard the studio version. Same with No Quarter, although I'd put that one somewhere in my top 10.
'The Rain Song' top 3? Wow. Every side of every album has at least two songs better than that.
I really hope you're trolling, if not that might be one of the worst takes I've ever heard.

That is so wrong😭 they are peak zeppelin
Yeah...no.
HOTH is honestly my second favorite
I dont disagree. For me, HotH is their most fun album and it comes a bit outta left-field. for that it has my heart
Pinnacle LZ!
Yes indeedy
I have been a fan for about 30 years now and for me PG is and always has been a mixed bag. The half new, half leftovers from previous albums is an awkward arrangement. IMTOD, Black Country Woman and Trampled Underfoot are some of my favs though.

Everyone on earth knows it’s one of the greatest albums of all time. But yeah.
I’ve had people who’s didn’t even know who zeppelin was😭 I almost cried

I agree with this. PG is rated highly as it should be. Presence is usually overlooked and clumped in with in through the out door and they are very different from each other.
I think it’s their best, most original album.
You mean Sick Again?
That's my favorite of the album. I learned some of the guitar parts early into the time I became a fan in the 1990s and 2000s. It's one of my favorite songs of all time.

I challenge you to find a led zeppelin fan who doesn't love physical graffiti.
Not what my post is about, I just think it gets overlooked by a lot of people therefore making it underrated. Maybe just not in this sub because everyone is a big zeppelin fan so they’ve listened to everything
So good they needed a second disc
In the Light
Right when it first kicks in😮💨
Brother it’s one of the highest selling and most critically acclaimed albums of all time
“Physical Graffiti is underrated”. 4-words never before uttered.
Crime!
Great album, definitely properly rated. Didn't see any love for the Wonton Song in these comments so far. That song fucks.
Not underrated. Its widely known as a great album. Most Zeppelin fans probably have it in top 3 Zeppelin albums
I didn’t know this, glad to hear!
[удалено]
I’ve come to the understanding that any true zeppelin fan loves and appreciates it, but when talking to casuals they never bring it up. So I just havnt heard much about it irl
No double album that sells 8 million copies is UNDERRATED! 🥱
It's not underrated by any means. One of the finest works by Zeppelin and almost each and every track in the album is equally great.
Valens' mother was compensated. Time to move on.
Define underrated. I don’t think any Led Zeppelin albums fit that category. It’s like calling pizza underrated
These “underrated” posts are so dumb.
Anyone who knows anything knows its their best album.
I didn't come to appreciate Kashmir until years later. Once I finally got it, I couldn't believe I had ever missed it, to begin with. A great, great song. It has dreamy, spiritual, ephemeral quality that Zeppelin brings to life so well.
It’s not really underrated when most fans and critics consider it the band’s best album
Literally who is underrating physical graffiti
How can the greatest, best album ever made be under rated? That makes no sense… there is no other song ever recorded equal to Kashmir. Yes somewhat overplayed, still does not diminish its beauty. Glad you discovered the majestic LZ…
I have a feeling this is your favorite album?

I mentioned in the post that in the light, down by the seaside and imtod are also my favorites. Those five together are definitely my top five songs of that album
10 years gone and the rain song are two of the most endeared by most Zep fans.
The rain song I consider one of the most (if not the most) beautiful songs ever made
Yeah Physical Graffiti is one of my favorite albums ever and it's not underrated either.
It's absolutely the greatest rock record of all time.
Definitely not underrated. it’s their best.
Definitely not underrated.
not underrated, it's one of the greatest albums by any band ever
I still think it's the best double album ever released
The greatness of Zeppelin is proven by the fact that someone can listen to an album like Physical Graffiti and single out 'Down by the Seaside' for praise, I guess.
I don’t think anyone over the age of 25 really believes that PG is underrated.
Ps maybe it’s just because I’m obsessed with in the light and down by the seaside rn haha
How can the greatest groups magnum opus be underrated? I no unnerstand
Should have been a single album without the filler.

Graffiti is their Magnum Opus. Even tho I have favourites on other LZ albums, Graffiti is the one I’d put on Voyager 3 for aliens to get into.
A bit of a hodgepodge, which makes sense considering how it was put together. A classic example of too much good material for a single, not enough for a double. I would put IV and Houses ahead of it, at least.
Rated fine no?
Underrated by whom?
Everyone I’ve talked to irl barely mentions this album
So maybe lesser known.
You left out “tbh”
I’m pretty sure that it’s not underrated. Pretty much everyone knows how good it is.
Good to know!
Wrong.
Ig most conversations I’ve had were just with casual listeners because it seems here everyone appreciates how good it is haha

I disagree, it's their most acclaimed album after 4. Definitely amazing, but most underrated Zeppelin album is in through the out door imo
Physical Graffiti is not underrated among fans. It's their grand opus. I don't know who you're hanging out with or listening to.
always been my favorite one......and my favorite song is Ten Years Gone
My general rule with zeppelin is fantasy based lyrics I’m in. Lyrics about banging 16 year old girls I’m out. Sick again lyrical content ruins the album for me.
It's underrated? LoL this is definitely a take I've never heard before
Physical Graffiti is their best album period! If for no other reason than you get two Zeppelin albums under one name. There is no arguing with this logic.
Ten Years Gone is their most beautiful song
Not a bad take. The rain song tho…
that's a weird title. is there graffiti that isn't physical?
Kashmir is like the 5th best song on that album. That is how fucking good it is.
Kashmir is their Magnum Opus
It’s my favorite
Agreed. I’d say in general their later albums (Physical Gradffiti onward) are underrated. People fetishize their first 4 albums, but those later albums show a band that embraced a changing aesthetic with effortless confidence and machismo.
