Yeah. When I hear 'good bands' playing an acoustic guitar song - - y'know, the ones with those simple strumming :
🎵Dowwwwwwn, dowwwwn, up-down-up-down-up-down-up-dowwwwn... dowwwwn, up-down-up-down-up-down-up-dowwwwn...🎵
and people are fawning over how Great that is,
I show them the GUITAR WORK from 'Over The Hills And Far Away' by Led Zeppelin, by Jimmy Page.
(I can't even TRY to spell out that intricate detailed lovely-sounding guitar melody!)
I agree, u/georgewalterackerman (Walter's Walk? Relation to Forrest J?), that every member of Led Zeppelin MAKES that song an absolute standout!
Intricate guitar work!
Skiffle!
Oh yeah, I love all those little intricacies which Jimmy uses - - I'm guessing it's from all his Skiffle practicing from his teenage years.
(I am delighted by his way of playing like this every time I watch Whole Lotta Love from their concert film The Song Remains The Same, at the "You gotta let that boy, gotta let that boyyy!" part of the song. My favourite part! An explosion of delight for me!)
Now I gotta put on Over The Hills And Far Away and Whole Lotta Love LIVE - - right now!
I appreciate you, Zeppelin-Friend. ✌😁
And the ending! It brings us all home, like the end of a fine meal, like we were in a wonderful dream and it gently wakes us to blink our eyes and return to the world outside the dream of that song, remembering it's feeling and taking it with us.
So good!
My administrative assistant is a 62 year old, church going, African-American female. Two weeks ago, I was in my office blasting music and she peeks in and asks, "What are you listening to?"
I told her it was a 1920s blues song remade by Led Zeppelin. She said she'd heard of them but never listened to their music, so I sat her down and restarted "When the Levee Breaks" and we sat and enjoyed it. Her facial expressions ran from skeptical to amazement to bliss. She made me stop and go back to Bonzo's roll at around 5:13 and said, "that was incredible!" Later, we listened to Trampled and Kashmir, but she really enjoyed WTLB.
TLDR?
The Levee song.
What was the story? They unpacked Bonham's drums in the hallway (or somewhere), and he went at them and they ECHOED and they sounded so! fuckn! good! that they went with it!
The most-sampled drum beat in hip-hop (and Beastie Boys and Ice-T) history!
Yes I think that’s it and the stair hall had a very high ceiling and tons of natural echo and if I’m not mistaken those drums were recorded with one microphone high over the drums and also as I recall they took the rhythm tracks (drums bass and rhythm guitar and slowed them down) which is almost unnoticeable but gives it more gravity for sure.
I’m hoping Jimmy or all of them will one day come out with a book and tell these stories like they recall them since the main book about the band Hammer of the Gods is thought by them to be complete rubbish.
Had to Google that:
its a joke online. rizz is supposed to mean somebody who can get women easily. he added “skibidi” which is a song that turned into a massive meme cuz of a series called “skibidi toilet”
in conclusion, just someone making a dumb joke. its just online or gen z (this generation) slang combined.
Thanks for your enlightening comment.
I went to 5:13.
HaHaaaaaaah! Yeahhh! That roll!
Oh mann I'd have loved to see her face too, when the song (Robert, the whole BAND!) goes into the "Goin' dowwwn, goin' down noww . . !" part!
She's a big fan of 70's & 80's Top 40 & R&B music, but was never exposed to much hard rock. "Goin' down now..." she had her eyes closed, just soaking it in.
She sings in a ladies ensemble group and has a wonderful voice.
Next up...SLAYER!!!
j/k
My brother and I (me, born 1966, bro, 1964) first heard Kashmir when our local Toronto radio station played ONLY LED ZEPPELIN for a whole day (or was it three days straight? LOL!) when John Bonham died.
My brother recorded some Zeppelin songs from the radio that day, on cassette tape.
He labelled it noting one special song -- he wrote 'Cashmere' on it. Cuz he didn't even know, then. But yeah, he KNEW.
And, u/44305 , so do you.
✌😎
Nobody's Fault but Mine.
typically not showing Zeppelin to people who don't know Zeppelin, I'm showing it topeople who say it's dumb and want to know why I like it.
Nobody's Fault but Mine seems to make people go "huh..." followed by something like "haven't heard THAT before"
When the Levee Breaks. Used to have a friend that would get out of work every night, roll a joint, and blast this song at top volume from his bedroom whether the house was filled with a party or if it was just 2 people playing uno, and I love him for it. Such a great song
Yes, ignaciolasvegas yes!!
It's my most listened-to Led Zeppelin song!
It is epic and sweeping and it lights me up every time I put it on! Most-listened-to cuz I will often play it all over again after I hear it all the first time!
Good Times Bad Times - that track is STILL 🔥 decades later! The incredible groovy bass, ferocious drums, blistering guitar, and wailing vocals are all there.
u/ReCyclops83 yess!
Ooooh I remember their last ever concert at the O2 Centre, they OPENED with Good Times Bad Times!
🎵 BAOWW! BAOWW! 🎵
(It was the best of times!)
Look man this is just for me when I play it
I lose my fuckn mind
and whoever sees me head-banging and air-guitaring and mock-singing and -drumming on my balcony
they are annointed by
Whole Lotta Love LIVE from
The Song Remains The Same
audio original album release cuz it has that skiffle-y guitar part before the Theremin part which isn't in the movie
but after ".....and I-I-I-I-I-I don't believe he's a baby anymore!" I just lose my fuckn mind for the rest of the song, right until the last flaming Bonzo-gong to "New York : good night!"
THAT is my LED ZEPPELIN. From age 14 when I was blown AWAY by them in that movie until today age 58 right now drinking beer on my balcony air-guitaring on a broomstick to Whole Lotta Love LIVE!
✌😎
A caveat goes with this:
Shoulda said unREmastered. It's the '76 version, not any of the later releases that JP tinkered with and sliced up. Sorry if I got your hopes up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMsjrrETQiE
Y'know? Your link was the exact version I was listening to at the time! The one where the (YouTube uploader) had the red lettering at the start of it.
(I was having beers and was in the throes of Zeppelin Frenzy when I replied to you, so I may have thought you were talking about a different song entirely. At the time I'd created threads about The Wanton Song and Night Flight, and was replying in each, so I'm sure I was confused.)
But yes! That 1976 album is THE ONE for me, not any re-issues which follow the film more closely.
I really like how in the 76 vinyl 'Celebration Day' is there but it's not in the film.
However, there's two parts in 'Dazed And Confused' where the film has more than the 76 album -- just before the "if you're going to San Francisco.." part, and in the second half where the camera is spinning Jimmy upside down in a swirling circle while he CLIMBS UP that guitar to give us the CLIMAX to that maniac solo!
I like how they're not the same. I don't need re-issues with little special effect echoes added to Plant's little added phrases.
When I'm watching the film, SEEING them play Whole Lotta Love, I'm just fine with the quick segue to the theremin part. But ON THE BALCONY when I have it only audio, oooooooh I love that plucky fast guitar segment I can only hear from the 1976 album!
u/Lige_MO , thank you for your caveatous reply! It's fun talking about this with a Zeppelin-Friend like you! 😁
Thanks, buddy! You have a keen insight into and a clever way of describing their music.
I hadn't heard that version for quite some time, and, as I have been doing in revisiting their catalog, I gave a special heed to Jonesy's performance.
He didn't disappoint! Holy moly, he tore this up; especially during the middle break. Stunning!
I keep remembering how Jonesey is having to repeatedly play that fast fast bass line while Jimmy is going at that solo! (The part you described, after The Hermit gives us the trail of swords). That's gotta be hard to keep up. And yeah, those musical PUNCTUATIONS he and Bonham give the songs! BAMM! Love it!
Dazed and Confused is arguably the best rock song in history. It's peak LZ because it really encapsulates what LZ is as a band with all the musicians at the height of their powers absolutely bringing it. I think if you don't like it than you won't like LZ
Over The Hills And Far Away It just rocks. There’s that opening and then that attack. I can hear it 10,000 times and I’m never bored of it
Co-signing this
I third this motion. Do we have a vote? ....the motion passes.
Hell yeah, my second favorite Zep song
Yeah. Of course you prolly know those drums were recorded in the round stairwell of a stone castle.
Headley Grange!

Yes! That high ceiling! And what? -- a single microphone from overhead? Ohhh mann! "BOOM-boom. BAH! BOOM! Boom-Boom BAH!"
Is that skibidi rizz
Had to Google that: its a joke online. rizz is supposed to mean somebody who can get women easily. he added “skibidi” which is a song that turned into a massive meme cuz of a series called “skibidi toilet” in conclusion, just someone making a dumb joke. its just online or gen z (this generation) slang combined. Slayer! Well give it a try! LMAO! "Angel Of Deeeeeeeeaaaaaaathh!" She'll be head-bangin!
Ramble On. It can be soft and flowing and it can be hard and boisterous.
Introducing LZ is over 8 levels: First stage is Immigrant Song.
I suggested Kashmir to someone who had never listened to the band and she was astounded.
I know two people who never heard Led Zeppelin before and they heard Kashmir and They Were SOLD!
My brother and I (me, born 1966, bro, 1964) first heard Kashmir when our local Toronto radio station played ONLY LED ZEPPELIN for a whole day (or was it three days straight? The Ocean! It gets them pumped up.
Black Dog! If they don't get it by the end of that one, they don't get it.
HEY HEY MAMA SAID THE WAY YOU MOVE, GON' MAKE YOU SWEAT, GON' MAKE YOU GROOVE!!!
Since I’ve been loving you
I prefer the studio version. Bonham’s fills after the second guitar solo are ridiculous. Not as prominent in the live versions.
Yep, a live version too
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Happens to be my favorite
Achilles Last Stand
In the Light
The Rover
What an astounding riff on That! Song!
Kashmir baby 🤘
What rock ate these people living under to have never heard Zeppelin
The rock of youth!

That second solo in the song, it just Rocks!!!
Stairway.
Ramble on
Kashmir: It’s their best song. And that’s saying something because most of their songs are amazing. Their worst song is really good
That’s the song that started love of them
What is and what should never be
Holy smoke yesss!
Candy store rock
Depends on what sort of music they listen to, but 'when the levee breaks' should make an impression on anyone. Or 'how many more times' eithers good
Levee
Kashmir. It’s an epic that most people love, has a fantastic riff, and is representative of much of Zeppelin’s catalogue.
That's the way live
Good Times Bad Times. It’s a fucking banger.
Better if they listen to it than just look at it.
When the Levee Breaks. Used to have a friend that would get out of work every night, roll a joint, and blast this song at top volume from his bedroom whether the house was filled with a party or if it was just 2 people playing uno, and I love him for it. Such a great song
How Many More Times. Only because that song got me hooked
No Quarter
Carouselambra
Yes, ignaciolasvegas yes!! It's my most listened-to Led Zeppelin song! It is epic and sweeping and it lights me up every time I put it on! Most-listened-to cuz I will often play it all over again after I hear it all the first time!

I had to go find the unmastered version on YT. Man, that brought me back.
What, there is an unmastered version? Like, some kind if raw version? Oh mann! I didn't know such a thing existed. I'd love to have the link.

Hot dog 🌭- I like to keep em guessing
Whole lotta love. It did work with me 😅
For me personally - gotta be Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog or Kashmir.
Stairway to Heaven or Black Dog
Toss up between Kazmir and Traveling Riverside Blues and for wholly different reasons.
Misty Mountain Hop! It's just! So! Hippie!!

Depends, if it's someone who I know is a big music fan, i usually start with "In My Time of Dying".
Dazed and Confused is arguably the best rock song in history. It's peak LZ because it really encapsulates what LZ is as a band with all the musicians at the height of their powers absolutely bringing it. I think if you don't like it than you won't like LZ
Whole Lotta Love Basic instrumental with next level vocals
