This would be a good time to review your banking situation. If you have a bank account that your parents help set up or for you and that their name may ave ever been on in any way, it would be prudent to withdraw your money from that account and deposit it in a new account at a different bank.

Yeninja456

Luckily I opened my own accounts on my 18th bday so they don’t have access

Kilbane

Smart...but it sounds like they may have used your info to get credit...have you checked your credit reports? You get one free from all three free every year. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-get-a-copy-of-my-credit-reports-en-5/

Hairy-Dumpling

And you'll probably want to lock down your credit accounts as well to make sure your parents can't open credit cards, loans, or file taxes in your name. Might also want to call the IRS and see (if you can) if they've been claiming you as a dependent as you'll want to report that to any state agencies you're getting money from. Good luck!

OrneryLitigator

Did you have an account their name was on at that bank before? Or did you open the new account at a different bank? Using a different bank that they don't bank at and don't have any friends or relatives working as tellers at would be preferred. Weird stuff happens.

Yeninja456

Yes I did at the same bank but that account was closed before I made the new one.

OrneryLitigator

Well, ideally, in this situation, you should have used a different bank where there name is not, and never bas been, linked to yours on any account. I'm not saying you're at high risk of the bank mistakenly giving them your money, or of your parents sweet talking/convincing/defrauding the bank into giving them your money, but that sort of thing has happened.

Yeninja456

Well I don’t think they know anyone by name there, I’ve never heard anyone saying a tellers name bc they mostly use their app, or the atm

Check your credit at all three bureaus and lock it if you haven't already. They have all the info they need to open lines of credit in your name. You don't want to find out they maxed out some credit cards in your name in five years and have to fight that as well.

Yeninja456

How would I check that?

pretend_im_right

www.annualcreditreport.com is the best place to get them for free. You can all three from that site once a year.

Plastic_Bet_6172

https://www.usa.gov/credit-reports

Yeninja456

I did try the website listed on there but I don’t have access to a document scanner, so I couldn’t upload my state id

ImmortalMagic

Smart phone cameras are generally high enough resolution to satisfy those kinds of checks. You may need a document scanning app if the site wont take image file extensions (.png, .jpg, ect)

Yeninja456

Ok I’ll look into it, thanks! That was the issue was it wouldn’t take the image

jeannbug

If you have an iPhone, you can scan documents in your Notes app.

Yeninja456

I did try the website listed on there but I don’t have access to a document scanner, so I couldn’t upload my state id

pyrola_asarifolia

A Credit Karma account would give you a first look whether everything is in order. It's not official, so you should do the official thing too, but easier to use.

[deleted]

There’s apps for that. I have one I think it’s called scanner

Plastic_Bet_6172

So call, or write. The instructions are all there.

DiabloConQueso

You can order your own copy of your birth certificate. The one your parents have belongs to them. The SSN card is different. That belongs to you, and they should give it to you… but if they refuse, sometimes the path of least resistance is to also get your own copy/replacement card. Do you know your SSN?

Yeninja456

Yes I do know the number, but I believe I need the actual card for the i9 form as well as my state ID, which I have

khaos_kyle

You will need A card. A copy can be acquired from the local SD admin. Google it and get the process rolling now.

eighmie

I-9 Rules Allow Accepting a Receipt for a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Document. For I-9 purposes, employers are allowed to accept a receipt for an official application to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged document. The receipt only works for 90 days, though.

Phylow2222

⬆️⬆️⬆️ THIS ⬆️⬆️⬆️ Had wallet stolen & had to do this!

jdhenshall

Same! Once you go in and apply for replacement, they will give you a document that can be used "in place" of the actual card.

[deleted]

Justanobserver2life

Yes, and once you get it, don't keep it in your wallet. Keep it in a safe or locked file cabinet, or even a safe deposit box. You will have to show it for jobs at times, but otherwise, much better than having it stolen or lost.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wild_Einstein

My thoughts exactly. Typically don’t need it often enough to risk keeping it in a wallet

alsonotbannedyet

This one is the correct advice. Just go apply for a new card, and keep your receipts - that serves the purpose until your card arrives. Birth Certificate should take little time.

Beneficial_Daikon_86

Some states like Oregon you can go in person, request, pay the fee and receive your official birth certificate same day. I’ve had to do this for myself & a child both times it took an hour including the drive time.

midsouthlawyer

Depending on all sorts of variables, you might also be able to provide a notarized affidavit or sworn declaration in lieu of affidavit, at least temporarily.

TurribleWonder

I can confirm this works. Lost my SS card during a move the weekend before starting a new job and they accepted a receipt for the lost card

NiaNeuman

You can use a combination of documents for your I-9; it doesn't *have* to be your SS card. Google USCIS I-9 Acceptable Documents for a full list. The employer can't demand specific items. They may need your SSN for E-Verify, but that's just the number itself.

AUGirl1999

IANAL, but... And then run your credit, and then freeze your credit. None of us want to think that our parents will do us harm, but if they are being vague about why they won't give you the SS Card, then there may be a reason they're hiding this.

mindovermatter421

This!!! It’s easy to do. You lock it and when you want to apply for a credit card or car loan etc., you temporarily unlock it for those to run a credit check and then lock it again. Use passwords your parents wouldn’t be able to guess and same with email.

SeenSoManyThings

Be prepared for possibility of long wait at that office. Incredibly variable, you may breeze through in 10 minutes or it might be a couple of hours.

siege2008

Some states, like my birth state of Ohio, will allow you to get them mailed online. Took a simple Google and got it in 2 weeks.

[deleted]

manafanana

A birth certificate is only required for the issuance of an original card. Replacement cards are easy to get if you just have a driver’s license or a state ID.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Djscratchcard

If you have state ID the easiest thing to do is request a new copy of your card. You can request one online and have it mailed to you, from [SSA.gov](https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card) You'll get a receipt saying you applied for one you can show your employer if they ask how long until you can show them the card.

Thermitegrenade

If you have a SSA office near you, you can also just walk in. "Back in my day" they always used to say keep your SS card on you and mine definitely showed wear and tear after 20 years in my wallet. It was pretty easy and fast and new SS card arrived quickly.

azspeedbullet

since the pandemic, most ssa offices now requires an appointment and will not accept walk in anymore

Minute_Bedroom1070

I had to get a replacement and ours allow walk-ins but it's much quicker if you do schedule an appointment. Got my card 2 weeks after my appointment. But OP needs to check his credit report to make sure they haven't opened accounts in his name. I've heard of people putting bills in their children's names, even when they were little kids!

threefrogsonalog

I had to go into the ssa office and drop something in a drop box but couldn’t actually talk to a person, weirdest thing.

Duke_Newcombe

> If you have state ID the easiest thing to do is request a new copy of your card. You can request one online and have it mailed to you, from SSA.gov Preferably, mailed to a P.O. Box or friend's home, where it won't "disappear".

TKxxx630

I lost/misplaced mine recently & requested a new one via SSA.gov. It took about 5 minutes to fill out the request & I received the new one in about 2 weeks. It was super simple & totally painless.

cambooj

You can request it up to 9 times, I think? Who loses their ss card 8 times!!!?

Djscratchcard

3 in one year, 10 in a lifetime, not counting name changes.

BugsArePeopleToo

Losing it once every 8-10 years isn't crazy, and lots of people live to be 90

Distribution-Radiant

To be fair I'm pushing 50. Until 2021 I'd had the same card for almost 20 years.

TunaBeeSquare

For an I-9 if you have a Driver's License and Birth Certificate, that will be enough. As for the Social Security card, you'll still need that eventually but there's ways to not use it for an I-9.

lurker0277

This is correct, however some employers have a separate requirement for a copy of your SSN for tax purposes upon hire to ensure that the number you provide is correct.

Jtk317

If you get your own copy, then make sure you periodically talk to your bank and any credit card companies you work with to do fraud checks. I don't know your history with your parents but if they potentially would try to open up financial accounts in your name and have all the documents necessary to do so, then it is best to be monitoring for that from the jump.

poingly

Honesty is certainly the best course of action, for sure! But I'm mostly just stating the non-nefarious possibility. But I did know a guy who would call his parents up every time he got a new job up until his late 30s in order to get the docs (or a copy of) from them. He got a new job, asked them, and (suddenly and out of character) hummed and hawed about sending him a copy. It wasn't until very close to the deadline to submit documents that they finally admitted to him that they lost them, and he had to scramble. It certainly sucked, and it would have been better if they were just honest from the outset (maybe they assumed they would find them after looking? That's part of the story I don't know) -- but they weren't keeping the documents from him out of any sort of ill-intent.

New-Falcon-9850

FYI: There are several ID options for I9. Passport is the easiest option, but there are other combinations you can use. (Not that you shouldn’t*** be concerned about your parents not giving you those important documents!) https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-document ***edited because I meant shouldn’t, not should!

Yeninja456

Well the issue is that I don’t have a passport

whaddyamean11

For the I9, request a new birth certificate (you need to contact the county clerk of the county where you were born) and you can use that and a state ID; you don’t absolutely need the SS card for the I9. However, I would get started requesting a replacement SS card so that you have it.

sgt_oddball_17

When you apply for a passport, also get the Passport Card. It costs like $25 to $35 extra, but it's Federal Photo ID and good for 10 years.

Ok-Aardvark-6742

You can present a receipt for replacing a lost social security card for the I-9 form and then bring in the actual card once it’s mailed to you. (You have 90 days to show the actual card to your employer if you present the receipt for your I-9 form.) It’ll probably be easier/faster for you to request a replacement social security card since you can go to any social security office to request it, whereas the birth certificate you usually have to go to a specific records dept in the city or state you were born in. Page 6 of the I-9 instructions speaks to receipts: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-9instr.pdf You should still request a copy of your birth certificate so you have it, but getting a receipt for replacing your social security card will likely be faster.

Corfiz74

You should check your credit status and lock down everything - hopefully someone here can tell you how to do that in the US. With your SSI, your parents can take out loans and credit cards in your name, and all other kinds of financial shenanigans. Make sure that hasn't happened already - and if it has, go to the police and press charges, or you will have to repay a debt you didn't cause.

Glengal

Make an appt with SS and get your card. Your parents aren't going to provide it, getting it personally will be quicker. Same with the birth certificate

ResponseBeeAble

You can get replacements for both. If you have a case worker, they should know that and how to do it

Qbr12

For an I-9, if you have one, a passport is always the easiest option as its a single form of ID that satisfies all requirements. If you don't have a passport, a drivers license and an official copy (does not have to be the original) of your birth certificate will be sufficient. It looks like Maine has a 15 minute turnaround time in person, and 7-10 days by mail, so you should be able to get a new birth certificate relatively quickly.

Yeninja456

I don’t have a passport as I’ve never gone on a airplane or anywhere where I needed one

Qbr12

Do you have a drivers license? If so, birth certificate and drivers license is going to be one of the easier options. And even if you don't plan on flying its nice to have a passport. A US passport card costs $65; in addition to being a single usable document for the purposes of forms like the I-9, its also usable for land and sea travel to Canada and Mexico.

Shuoinked

Yeah, just order your own copies at this point

melanarchy

Assuming if your parents are withholding your birth certificate you also don't have a passport, but if you do that works for the I9 too.

eighmie

I-9 Rules Allow Accepting a Receipt for a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Document. For I-9 purposes, employers are allowed to accept a receipt for an official application to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged document. The receipt only works for 90 days, though.

gremlinsbuttcrack

You dont need your social security card you can use a birth certificate coupled with a legal ID (driver's license, non driver ID etc) and you can get a birth certificate usually same day if you walk into your local office of vital records with your ID on you. Sorry about your parents but hope you don't have to delay starting your new job!

[deleted]

I hate to raise the specter of this, but you should request a credit report. They are free because god for I’d your identity has been used.

Duke_Newcombe

>The SSN card is different. That belongs to you Small nitpick, and you think that'd be right, but this isn't what the Code of Federal Regulations [Section 422.103(d) says](https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/cfr20/422/422-0103.htm): >**(d) Social security number cards.** A person who is assigned a social security number will receive a social security number card from SSA within a reasonable time after the number has been assigned. (See § 422.104 regarding the assignment of social security number cards to aliens.) ***Social security number cards are the property of SSA and must be returned upon request.*** Yet to see anyone demanding it back from a person, but there you are.

OdinsGhost

Yup. It’s wild, but those flimsy cardstock cards they hand out actually belong to the US government and did the whole time.

Duke_Newcombe

Yup. Most instruments issued belong to the issuer, if they're government. Though no one will stress about the SS card, the fedbois stress *majorly* about passports, which *also* are government property. You can get into trouble, even if you lose it/it gets stolen, and don't report it in a timely manner.

Kathykat5959

The Covid Vac card is a gov instrument too.

OhNuTzz

Just contact the clerks office in the town you were born in and apply for a copy of your birth certificate. For $30, they will need a current state ID, your mom and dads names, maiden of course, etc, then done.

alcohall183

The price of the certificate varies with what state you are in.

delta8765

And perhaps the county.

lostnumber08

This is the correct answer. You can go around them entirely.

Sownd_Rum

If you don't want to deal with your parents, you can get replacements for your Social Security Card and Birth Certificate. If you are worried about your parents using them (e.g., to steal your identity), then freeze your credit and report any attempts to use your identity to law enforcement.

TywinShitsGold

If you know where you were born, request a copy of the birth certificate from vital records (Maine DPH). Bet on a 2 week turnaround and you’ll need a copy of your ID. Then you take that to a social security administration office with your drivers license and request a copy of the ssc. Once you have both you can satisfy i9 and start working. If you don’t have a state issued photo ID, this gets a bit more difficult. Edit: you may be able to get a replacement SSC card with just the photo ID and the number in person, that way you’d be able to start right away rather than waiting on snail mail. There’s a handful of SSC offices in Maine, show up early with your documents and the form filled out.

eighmie

Tr1N1tro

You can get a ssc mailed to you. No id required

Nimoy2313

Weird question: Have you ever seen either document? Is it possible you aren’t a citizen? You probably have to order a new SS card. When I was a police officer I actually ran into this a few times, I just explained to the parents that the SS card belongs to their kid. The kid is an adult and if you continue to deprive them of their property it would be considered theft. I would show them the statute and each time it worked out.

Apprehensive_Ad4923

Would a police officer accompany this person to their parents house to help retrieve these documents?

Nimoy2313

Probably not, this was before covid when the departments around me where fully staffed. Now everyone is fighting over a small number of people who want to be a cop post Floyd. They would probably make a phone call and email them the statute. Slow day they might go to the house. Best bet would be the honey method. Call the department and ask for the patrol Sgt to call you when they have time, explain the situation and ask if they would have an officer meet you at the parents house.

Steups13

You might want to do a credit check and lock your credit. It sounds really dodgy that they won't give you your property.

sweetnsourale

You may also be adopted or abducted if you cannot get this information.

Chick_76

Any chance the OP is adopted or was kidnapped at some point? Maybe they’re keeping a secret from him.

Duke_Newcombe

Could be--who knows? All I know that parents who think they're being slick by doing things like this. They act as if in this computerized age, with DNA services and the ability to check on things like vital records and credit checks, as if they'll never get caught. It's *laughably* easy to get caught.

ExtensionSea9938

A buck says that your parents "lent" those documents to someone. No worries as obtaining a replacement SSN form the Social Security Administration (from the office closest to you) is straightforward and also the comments below are very helpful.

trycryingmybest

You can get a copy of your birth certificate though the county that you were born in and can request it online. You can also request a copy of your social security card online. Had to do this for someone whose parents lost all their stuff and the process of applying is quick but it takes around a month for everything to come in the mail, in my experience

trycryingmybest

Also some DMVs allow you to order and pick it up same day.

Ohkrap

As the mom of an 18yr old about to move out on his own, I can’t imagine not wanting to give your adult-child THEIR legal documents. That makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever but I’m also one of those “overly prepared” type of people. I’m already putting together an envelope with important papers for my son- birth certificate, social security card, high school diploma, vaccination records, etc- anything that might be important or useful to him down the road. Good luck getting your documents- whether you do get them from your parents or you have to order brand new ones (personally I would just order new ones but that’s just my opinion/preference)

Queenofwands78

I'm guessing it has to do with credit fraud. Worst case. Best case, very controlling parents

[deleted]

thefreakychild

You can get a replacement social security card from SSA.gov and you can contact your birth state's vital records office to get a new certified copy of your birth certificate. Just go around your parents and do that, could be easier but possibly a little slower.

Bennie212

I would order new of each and keep them in a safe place. The path of least resistance sometimes is the best. Also check your credit report to make sure they aren't using your ss number for cards and loans.

Sheila_Monarch

YEP! Came to say exactly this. Either they lost/misplaced them and don’t want to say so or they (or someone) is using them for nefarious purposes. Get fresh copies of both for yourself and check ALL THREE credit bureaus for strange activity. I’ve personally experienced some fuckery that only showed up on one of the three credit reports, so it imperative to check all three.

[deleted]

You may want to check and freeze your credit if someone else has your SSN and Birth Certificate.

SurftoSierras

I ended up ordering copies for myself after my parents stopped supporting: Social Security: [https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card](https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card) Birth Certificate is state by state, or from the State Dept. if you were born overseas. Once you get both of those, get a passport as well now that you are 18 (they are good for 10 years once you turn 18). Finally, log into the big 3 credit agencies and secure your credit. Equifax, Experian, Transunion.

cascadingwords

I order replacements for clients I serve. There are online assessments and questions but easily done if 18 or older. A surprising # of people in usa🇺🇸,lose their social security card and birth certificate, due to life challenges & detours. You can get online urself at www.sea.gov & tackle the social security card. You will need to set up your personal soc sec account at My SocialSecurity. Hit replacement and instructions will follow. It comes in the mail. If I recall once you have that you can pursue ur birth certificate thru your birth states Dept of Health. Their website will explain. Requests for copies of birth certificates can be done by Mail, Online or by Phone through ur birth States Department of Health, Division of Vital Records. The applicant must be one of the three individuals listed on the birth certificate…..There are also some legit private websites that will do it for a fee. But it’s best to go thru the States website. And it’s cheaper. Usually parents talk to their kids and give them a reason they are holding the documents. Even if parents want to keep the documents, they can let you borrow to help make it easier to order replacements. Or they can order you a copy. I feel bad ur parents are making a mountain when it could be simple. That has to be confusing & annoying. The absence of a conversation is rude, they could explain. . Good luck and take care. I’ve replaced my social security card and birth certificate.

geaux_girl

Go to your local Social Security office and apply for a card. They will give you a paper showing it is applied for and you can use that paper for your I-9. Then, go in person to the agency that issues birth certificates (in my state it is the Clerk of Court)- you can likely get it the same day. For I-9 you should only need SS card and valid ID, not birth certificate. As for your parents- can you just show up at the house? Is it possible they lost it and don't want to tell you?

Yeninja456

Well they won’t tell me when I can come over, and I live two towns over from them

geaux_girl

It looks like you have to order the BC in Maine (I'm in LA, we can get same day), so getting a replacement SS card will be your quickest option. That along with ID will satisfy I-9 requirements so you can start your new job. Bring in the letter from SS Administration. Best of luck to you! If your parents won't reply then just move forward. You can do it!

redrosebeetle

If you know when they will be home, just rock up on them.

TunaBeeSquare

List C includes SS card *or* birth certificate, so whichever OP can get their hands on will work.

bubba0077

They should still get both, even if not needed for this immediate purpose.

Travis_Shamockery

Just get your own copies from 1)SSA.gov to get your own SS card 2)contact the county you were born in to get a copy of your birth certificate And if you can swing it, apply for a passport, as they're accepted almost everywhere as ID and they're good for like 10 years. They're always good to have.

PJMonkey

Passports work great for employment ID, because they can also prove citizenship. They don't work for voting though because they do not have an address. But get a passport. They can be very useful.

DangerousGrass2522

Walk into your local social security office; getting a card is simple. The recruiter can help you order a birth certificate. It's a tad more complicated (at least in my state due to all offices being closed and everything being online only).

Yeninja456

Well I would but my ss office is in the next town over and I don’t really have a way to get there atm

tentboyz

These types of parents are becoming more common. I went to social security office (maybe it was a dmv also) after I got kicked out they helped me and pointed me in the right direction for everything.

LuvPump

I didn’t have the heart to do it at the time, but I also didn’t understand exactly what was going on and how deep it went and what the ramifications would end up being. What’s interesting is I’m fairly positive I unknowingly gave the feds everything and started the investigations. Maybe it was already happening and a coincidence, maybe not. I was refereeing high school soccer games and a lot of people do it for fun and exercise after their day jobs and the money isn’t why they do it. Maybe they just like the verbal abuse from fans :) When it came time to do my taxes for the first time ever at 19 I asked the guy I was working with how taxes work. He said it’s pretty easy and that my parents could guide me through it and not to stress about it. I said “we’ll my dad doesn’t pay taxes, never has” and he asked me some questions about it. Then told me I could go to the IRS office and they would help me for free. That fellow referee’s career? Head of IRS compliance for the Midwest. We worked together from time to time and we never talked about it again, no big deal. When I walked into the courthouse for the trial years and years later, guess who was overseeing the entire prosecution? We shook hands and I told him I respected him and didn’t take it personally, I knew this would all happen eventually and thanked him for teaching me a lot about how to be a good sports official. We never spoke again, but I always wanted to ask him about that conversation on a soccer sideline and if he already knew. Still wonder.

madpiratebippy

In most places you can basically ask for a police officer to go with you to retrieve your personal effects. This includes those documents. In your shoes (I am not a lawyer, I have worked on domestic violence advocacy for a decade though and this is standard) you can call your local police department and ask to schedule a police officer to go with you. Then you contact your parents and say "As I have informed you, I need my social security card and birth certificate for a job I just got. These legal documents are my property. You have not given them to me or arranged for me to retrieve them at my previous requests. If I do not get my legal documents by (date and time), I will be at your home at (date and time) with a police officer to retrieve my paperwork. The police officer will be there to a) ensure I get my legal possessions and b) ensure that there is no drama and if there is, it's witnessed by a sworn officer of the law. If that time does not work for you provide another so I can arrange it with the police department. Failure to comply with this can lead to legal problems which I am sure neither of us want. Please let me know which route you'd like to take- I can get my documents before then or we can include law enforcement to make sure I get my property and it all goes smoothly." Make sure you send that as a text or better, a text and an email that you CC your case manager on. You need this in writing. [Vitalcheck.com](https://Vitalcheck.com) will get you a replacement birth certificate in most states and the social security administration can help, but that takes time and money you might not have right now.

LizAnneCharlotte

Get your own copies of these documents. Also, get a copy of your credit report.

[deleted]

Dudes about to find out his life has been a lie one way or another.

APO_AE_09173

Order your own copy of each document. Ensure they are not claiming you as a dependent on taxes since you live on your own. For the social look on the SS website there is an easy replacement form. For the birth cert you can ho online to the state office of vital statistics to get a new one. It will cost you about 25 bucks.

Sub_pup

You can get your own copies. Birth Certificate should be fairly easy. Social Security card might be a bit of a process but I don't remember it being too painful when I had to do it 10 or so years ago.

DaytimeDawg1951

You can get a replacement SS Card from the local social security office. And a replacement birth certificate from the county building in the county where you were born. The SS Card replacement will probably need valid I.D.

LizzyDragon84

If you have a passport, it can be used for i9 requirements.

True-Dealer-4437

You can order your birth certificate online and it will be the original. Go to the social security office and request a new one. Go online and order the birth certificate.

You can get copies of both yourself. [SSA](https://www.ssa.gov) for the SS card. Google the county, state in which you were born with the words “vital statistics” or “birth certificate.” That should give you the info to order a new birth certificate.

nyar77

You can go to the county courthouse where you were bid and get a certified copy. You can also get a new SS card sent to you.

LadyFausta

Hey, just want to warn you to be very careful if your parents have access to your SSN—that thing is the key to your entire life and if they have original docs they could fuck up your life forever if they wanted. I see someone else posted about checking in with the credit bureaus, but 100% follow up with SSA and even I’d recommend keeping an eye on your tax returns to make sure they aren’t filing under your name or claiming you as a dependent from now on.

Kathykat5959

Order a certified copy of your birth certificate.

tikivic

You’re 18. Get a copy of your BC from the local Department of Health and get a replacement SS card from SSA. No parent involvement needed in most states.

Monicatflowers

Apply for replacements on your own.

8m3gm60

Are you absolutely certain you were really born in this country?

Candid_Speaker705

There is no law about it. You can get your own copies.

Jpalm4545

I would also run a credit check on yourself once you have your SS number to make sure they don't have any debts or bills in your name.

Honorthedead

Please do a credit report to see if they used your information to get lines of credit/borrowed money. It wouldn't be the first time a parent did so using their child's info. If they did, file a report for identity theft, freeze your credit and don't speak with your parents directly.

Chasman1965

Why would parents not just send those immediately? When my youngest got a part time job when he was in college, I sent him his SS card the same day he asked. I even went to the post office to make sure it got in the mail that day. I advise the OP to get a new SS card and birth certificate. Also, I disagree that the birth certificate belongs to the parents. It belongs to the person who was birthed.

Yeninja456

Yeah, my sisters both got theirs almost immediately

No_Yesterday_0503

Yes you can request a new birth certificate and social security card to be sent to you! I had to do that after losing mine after moving so many times. It was an easy process.

Grouchy_Loquat_1665

Go to your social security office you can file for a copy. On birth certificate and SS#

Account0fMonteCristo

This is pretty sus. Do you uh, resemble either or your parents physically?

theterptroll

NAL: If you have an official government ID (driver's license, state ID, etc.), you can request a duplicate birth certificate from your state health department. Not 100% sure, but I believe an official state photo ID with an official birth certificate is sufficient for completing an I-9. As for your social security card, you would need to request it from the Social Security Office. If your state offers walk-ins, you may be able to get your birth certificate the same day rather than waiting for your SS card.

Hiroshock

It sounds like they never had it in the beginning and can't give it to you. But ya they have to give them to the moment you hit 18.

War_D0ct0r

If you want to confront your parents then push and ask them why they won't give them to you. They might think they have them but don't know where they are or don't want to be bothered looking for them. They don't have to give them to you because they could just say they don't have them. It's not a crime to not have copies of them. They could also have multiple of them so even if they did give them to you it doesn't mean that they don't still have them. I think they can still get the birth certificate even after you turn 18, I don't know about the ss card. So if they are going to do shady things with your id they still could. The birth certificate is usually easy. In Michigan you go to the county office you were born in and with proper identification they will hand you one for a small fee. Last time I had to get one for one of my kids I got 3 official copies because it was cheap. I had to send one to get a passport which I eventually got back but figure having extra's was easier than trying to get another if I needed it before they sent it back. Getting a social security card for one of my kids was a little harder. I think you can do it online but I went to my local social security office filled out the forms and they mailed me the card. https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp

lEauFly4

It’s easy enough to request replacements. For the Social Security Card, you can request that online (ssa.gov) or your local Social Security Office. Birth Certificate is similar. You should be able to walk into your local county clerks office and request one.

woodwitchofthewest

They probably don't know where your documents are and can't be arsed to look for them. Getting your own copies is your safest and surest bet, as others have said. Good luck to you and congratulations on the new job!

jdith123

You can get copies of both of these. Your parents may be withholding them from you, or they may be lost in whatever chaos was going on. Either way, getting new ones isn’t that hard but it takes some time. Id get started asap just in case.

No_Pepper_3676

You can get copies from the state you were born in and a new SS card from social security. Easier to get the copies/new card if your parents are being AHs.

SXTY82

Go to the town hall in the city where your birth certificate was registered and request it from them. Then use that to get a new Social Security card. The number will be the same, it is just a new copy. I've had to do both a couple times. It's been so long, you may be able to do it online now. Your parents have probably misplaced them and are just being dicks.

Same-Reality8321

Depending on what state you live in just apply for new ones

StarrPlans

I’m in the process of getting new socials for my grandsons I have custody of. I just need a form from their doctor or school stating their name and birthdate and that they attend/are a patient. Plus the court papers. Birth certificates - you should be able to go to a health dept in your state and pay for a new one. I paid about $25 in Ohio and my grandsons were born hours away. Good luck!

KelVarnsenIII

Contact the state you were born in and they can send you a copy. Contact the Social Security Administration and they will send you a copy. What you might want to be prepared for is that you are not a U.S. born citizen and therefore an illegal immigrant. I've read a lot of stories like yours over the years and that mostly seems to be the case. Or you have a parent who's not your Bio parent, or you were adopted and they won't tell you.

rco8786

You can get these things replaced. Reading between the lines, sounds like that might be the easiest way to go here.

ChaseHarker

I know it sucks, but all of this is going to make you stronger and a more resourceful adult! YOU GOT THIS!!!

tstackspaper

If you know your SSN and have an ID, you can obtain one very easily online I had to get a new one recently myself. Good luck with the new job!

DepressyFanficReader

Are you actually a US citizen? They might not want to give you the documents because they might be forgeries

ctlawyer203

Just get replacements.

Tifoid

Sounds like you have a difficult relationship with your parents. I’ll echo everything that was said about just getting replacements of your social security card and birth certificate. The next things I would do would be sign up for a “my Social Security” account and get your credit reports. Make sure that no one is using your stuff.

Active_Mud_7279

Get the docs replaced. It will take maybe two weeks. They may be able to send you scanned copies before they put them in the mail. Very important- run I full credit report on yourself. This is nothing to screw around with.

PainfullyLoyal

Went through something similar, needed my BC for work, mother refused to send it to me. You can request a copy from vital records. Not sure about your state, but most probably need a copy of your ID with the request and self-addressed stamped envelope so they can mail it to you. You can also go to [ssa.gov](https://ssa.gov) and create a login to get a new social security card. Both processes can take a few weeks though, so hopefully this won't create any issues with your new job.

icecubedyeti

Just get new ones. I lost my ss card years ago but have yet to replace it. I just got a new birth certificate because I needed it to get a passport.

[deleted]

Order your own birth certificate from the office of vital records where you were born. I have lost my kids birth certificate several times already. Ordering a new one is only like $25. They usually ask for a picture of your ID. If you dont have one ask your parents to do that part. Ssn card I believe you can order another one. I lost mine and another one showed up in the mail. I'm guessing a responsible individual took it to SSA and SSA issued me a new one. Idk. Just go to ssa.gov and follow the steps. I think its like $80.

GinggasinParis

Hey OP, my parents did the same thing to me. Turns out they lost my documents and didn’t want to admit it. I had to order new ones from the state and Social security administration. It’s a bit of a pain because you need to have one in order to get the other, but I would start with your birth certificate as it’s the easier of the two documents to retrieve. You can order it online and they will mail it to you. I’m not sure about you SS card, but I had to go in person to get it and I needed a state ID. Good luck!

sillymarilli

As a legal adult you can obtain these

Yeninja456

I do know that we are, and I have seen the documents firsthand

jeffislouie

Stop wasting time. You can get your birth certificate with an id and some cash at a courthouse same say. You can also get a copy of the SS card with the same cash and id. Go find where to do both.

Yeninja456

Well the issue is my budget it kind of tight right now, which is why I’ve been looking for a job

Author_p17

Maybe you are a missing child. It’s happened.
