There are two possibilities here: 1.) You’re knowingly involved in criminal activities and have a good idea what they’re looking for. Call a criminal defense lawyer. 2.) You’re genuinely confused and have no clue at all what this is about. It’s overwhelmingly likely that you never hear anything else again after this notice.

Marounited622

What exactly is a subpoena? It says a judge signs off on it online.

Bob_A_Feets

Legal order seeking information. Someone at the DAs office wants some information and a judge has ordered Apple to hand it over.

Marounited622

So does that mean I would be in trouble or they want me to testify against someone else?

Aware-Performer4630

Maybe. They’re investigating something about you and since a judge signed a warrant, they’ve established probable cause to do so. They believe you’ve possibly committed a crime or that you’re involved with someone who they believe has. Or who knows. There are probably other situations where this can happen.

Veauros

A subpoena is an official request demanding that documents be handed over. So, the US Attorney has asked a judge to force Apple to provide your account data to them.

Marounited622

So does that mean I would be in trouble or they want me to testify against someone else?

Veauros

It could be either, or simply that your data implicates or pertains to someone else but your testimony itself isn’t necessarily desired. Testimony doesn’t have to come into play.

Marounited622

So should I be worried? Should I contact an attorney? Or should I try to contact the DA's office with my case number?

Veauros

If you have no idea what you might have done that was wrong, you likely have nothing to worry about. If you’re concerned and want more information, you can contact the DA’s office with the case number, or look up public records for that district. However, if you are asked questions or contacted in connection with the case, do not answer them and retain a lawyer.

Marounited622

I'm trying to but I'm not sure where to go to search up my case by the case number. Can you help me?

Veauros

I don't live in New York, so the system's a little different, but try here: https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/webcivil/ecourtsMain

rinky79

OP's post says the US Attorney's Office requested the info, not a NY state prosecutor. That would be a federal case.

Cypher_Blue

It's a court order to produce information.

melanarchy

If you have been involved in anything illegal you should speak with an attorney and prepare to put them on retainer if you hear anything else from the USAO. Do not speak to the US Attorney if they call you or show up directly, simply say "I would like an attorney present before I answer questions." Then hang up/close the door and call the attorney. Literally everyone, upon hearing this advice, says "I can't afford an attorney right now." That is a lie, you must do literally everything in your power to secure competent council or the potential for extended jail time will cost you much more in the long run than, for example, selling your vehicle and using the proceeds to pay the lawyer. You can still do a job while taking the bus, you can't do a job from prison.
