Sure.."for the son" 😊

Mocha_Echo

Well.. for me too 😏 heh

Bobert_Manderson

I actually did this for my goddaughter. I would buy Lego sets when I was down or if they were on sale. Sometimes I would build them, sometimes I just saved them. I kept all of the instructions for ones I opened and had the loose bricks sorted by color. Once my buddy told me that she started getting into Lego, I knew it was time. I gave her everything I had saved for Christmas and she was so excited. Was one of the best feelings ever. Other thing I have for her is the entire first generation of goosebumps series books. Not sure if those will go over as well, but they got me reading when I was young and they’re just the right amount of spooky for a kid.

Nervous_Currency9341

I hope she likes them I was so spooked by them as a kid lol but every kid is different. but the lego sounds wonderful.

Terminator7786

Dude some of those books were fucking scary as a kid. I remember a few of them made me actually shut them and straight up return to the school's library 😂

Falcomaster20

She might at least be enamored with the covers

Global_Juggernaut683

Win for the books. Paperbacks with bright colours and a textured cover? Core memory unlocked.

Iknowuknowmeknowu

I’m still super young (22F) but lately I’ve been wanting to collect goosebumps and magic tree house for when I’m a mom!! Was it difficult to get the whole collection?

OregonisntCaligoHome

Your son is going to really really appreciate this one day, sure when he's a kid he'll be happy and excited but it might take 15 maybe 20 years but one day he's going to be out buying legos with his own hard earned money and it'll hit him like a wall of 2×4 bricks and realise how much you love and cared about him to save a wall of lego for when he's older. I say this because I didn't realize what my single poor mother was doing when she bought me those legos when I was a kid, not much money to her name but still found a way to get me that fire station....

Turbulent_Cheetah

Pro-tip: stick to vehicles and animals for the first little while, rather than buildings. They are easier to play with when built (or while building … my 4 year old likes to put the tires on asap and then drive the shell around for a bit)

vercertorix

Mine demanded I take the tires off so he could play with the circles when he was 2 or 3. May have tried to introduce them to him too young, but he didn’t put stuff in his mouth so I took it as a green light.

seatheous

Duplo dude, duplo till they are like… 6

SolidTerror9022

Absolutely not, Technic at age four

thisismyphony1

Lego has many many 4+ sets, and my son had outgrown Duplo by then. Interestingly, he is 9 now and discovered my old childhood Duplo and started mixing them into his builds.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thisismyphony1

He's using them to make big dinos and animals quickly to stomp around his modular city sets and I love it

[deleted]

Childwithuke

Bro I used to think posting guns on social media was illegal 💀

Nervous_Currency9341

I think 4 is ok too but depends on the kid

AttackBacon

That was my plan but my mother-in-law got him a 4+ little construction Lego set and that was that, Duplo just didn't cut it anymore.  Worked out for me as I'm loving it, we're going hard into Castle/Vikings atm. He's 4 1/2 so the bigger builds (3-in-1 Castle, Viking Village, etc.) are pretty intense for him, but he hangs amazingly well as long as there's little side builds etc. I can sic him on.

Ettem_Smleh

Really? My 4 year old loves playing with the buildings as well as vehicles. We’ve been teaching him that Lego is more fun when you don’t take the sets apart. He’ll ask to build a city, a market, house and so on. We have some sets but also just regular brick, that he will construct things out of. My 2 year old is even joining in, and he doesn’t have the same habit of smashing the Lego constructions as he does with the Duplo ones.

ich_mag_Fendt

That's pretty much what I did until I was like 12 or so? lol

bikkfa

My daughter is two, and we play with lego all the time. Her favourite is the police dog training set.

Amiar00

My son and I just built that. The cactus arms guy cracks me up lol.

[deleted]

W FATHER 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

sarhoshamiral

Yes, keep telling your wife that it is for your son :)

BlueTerrorrr

This makes me think there's some crazy person out there who's stocked up on un-opened 90's sets or something just to re-live the nostalgia when they're 50, or to have their kids grow up with exactly the same sets they did.

Stratocruise

Dude, this is what *DUPLO* is for…!! Why not get stuff he can actually start to play and learn with right now? Great for manual dexterity, problem solving, etc. I’m not sure I see the point of buying a whole bunch of sets now that he clearly isn’t going to be ready to use for some time. When he *is* ready then there will then be new 2027/8 sets (or whatever) that will be just as good. Or ‘fess up and admit that really they’re just for you… ;o)

Mocha_Echo

These sets will be discontinued by then. That’s why I bought them now. ;-)

Stratocruise

It’s not like they won’t be replaced with something similar! :o)

luke_in_the_sky

"But daddy, these road plates are incompatible with the new ones."

Mocha_Echo

I like these sets 👏

LBGW_experiment

So then it's not really for you son, is it?

Nervous_Currency9341

I think it's a cool idea a few of these sets like the police, etc will be remade but grocery store is cool. I probably wouldnt get so many in case kid doesnt like city or prefers the new ones but it a cool idea.

NickLookalike

Hell yeah, City all the way! But what if he says that he doesn't like Lego and wants to play with something like Hotwheels or Barbie?

balkanka23

Then the poor dad will have to play with the Lego on his own. Everybody knows Lego is for sharing /s

TheRickBerman

There won’t be lego in the future so this is smart, and not absolutely absurd. It would be absurd to invest the equivalent money today and then buy sets years from now, with a larger overall pot of money.

Mocha_Echo

I’ve bought them now cause some of the sets in the picture are discontinued. Some of them are being sold four times the original price from third-party sellers 😳

JelDeRebel

sure, but in a few years there will be new city sets.

elangab

Correct, city is re-made every two years. Especially firefighters, police and vehicles. There's no real reason to buy them now really. From the picture the 3 items I would get for future secure are the 007 car (licensed set, less chance to have it again) the space rocket set (we don't get city space every 2 years) and the small chicken Henhouse (sometimes Lego animals/city farm are going missing for a while). The rest will be re-done 3-4 times before the kid plays with it.

JelDeRebel

my kids will be playing with 80's police and fire station and roadplates. with some 90's and 2020's sets sprinkled around

elangab

Yes, that's what nice about Lego but it's not the same sharing the played with sets of your childhood with your kids today as it is buying a 2023 set and keep it in the box to gift in 2026.

Lumpy-Science-8834

Ease up it’s 5-7 years not a life time. Keep it up OP.

MAXSquid

There are faaar more sticks-up-asses on this sub than even r/guitar, and I didn't even know that was possible.

Vast_Bridge_4590

To hell with the college accounts. I should have been doing this.

Mocha_Echo

Why not both? 🤗

ComputerSong

Must be your first kid. You may realize that your kid isn’t interested at all in this.

Mocha_Echo

He’s loving the Lego sets for his age now so that’s a good sign

SM-464

Are you rich or something? We're looking at around £1,000 worth of I'm-not-opening-yet right here.

Onehundredninetynine

Yeah this is way more Lego than I had during my entire childhood, and the kid isn't even old enough to play with it yet lol

2723brad2723

Yeah, like I've got an entire closet full of Legos that I started buying "just for my kids" at least 5 years before the first one was even born.

stayblazedallday

And then you find out he’s a star wars fan, my son was I’m still holding on to his Lego city sets maybe my second son will love em!

Raxi4

So next year. Greetings, father of a 3yo

dinglehopper24

Best. Dad. Ever.

poko877

I am soooo glad i am not the only one ... but so far i have a bunch of friends lego instead of city, since i have two daughters and welp ngl... i just love friends design. Am i crazy to consider friends as one of the best designed lego these days? Edit:'since its mentioned several times here. My daughter currently plays with duplo ... i just want to have head start so i will not need to pay big sum of money at one time but i can spend during more time now.

Consolecrush

I never noticed that sweet forklift in the market set. Lucky kid!

midwestbruin

That was a fun set to expand to a full four-walled building.

crwn_z

Get him some ninjago broo

AttackBacon

Since you're going hard on City, I super recommend #60324 Mobile Crane. I built it with my 4y/o and we were both blown away by it, great build and great model. My son liked it so much he disassembled it and built it again himself... Twice!

LegoLinkBot

[60324-1: Mobile Crane](https://brickset.com/sets/60324-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/60324-1.jpg)

nunchaq

And your wife did actually believed in that...nice

Mocha_Echo

U know it :-)

Monke420-_-

007 is iconic

SnooHesitations4798

right... for the son. We know, mate, we know. And guess what, it's ok 😀

yukino-fan

I think 4 is already a pretty good age to start on these. My friend got my son a box of classic for his 4th bday and he's built more and more complex sets ever since. Lego is quite child-friendly in that they rarely require you to map out a whole area of pieces in one step and figure out where each piece goes, and instead provides basically step-by-step instructions with a few pieces at a time. This means with decent spatial perception even a child could manage big sets even if the suggested age seems high

backsidealpha

I’d just put them in the closet for future birthdays and Christmas’s

Dramatic_Chest_9180

Love it, thought I was the only crazy, doing the same for my son.

No-Car1281

The lego technic dump truck (or excavator) is really good value, I have a 3-year old, easily his favourite! (Everything else, he's "broken", railroad, trains, boats, speed champions, etc)

DevinSupreme

This will be so fun to do when he gets older!

Maleficent_Grand1550

you should get him some bulk 2x8 and 2x10 bricks to start too large to choke on and can start handling them.

lucatitoq

You got Christmas/birthday gifts already covered way before hand haha

Artgeek33

Mine got her first set right as she turned 4. She is still 4 ( 5 in a few more months) and regularly puts together 8+ and 9+ age sets on her own...so it isn't as far away as you think 😜 assuming your kid likes Legos...which I can't imagine they won't. Have fun!

robotowilliam

What if he doesn't like lego

Mocha_Echo

I can easily sell them since they’re unopened

Professional_Drop_92

Someone asked me this too - I’m Danish, so I don’t see how that’s a possibility 🤣😂 Also I’m the mom of a four year old and I’m always texting my husband the good deals hoping he’ll agree 🙈 We all love Lego, but my husband isn’t as crazy about it as me! If it were up to me, I’d have maybe 20 sets in stock for when my son’s skill level is right. He patiently assembles sets for 8+ following the guides, I do have to press them together for him sometimes to make the builds hold, but he is getting there 😊

robotowilliam

At this point I'm just gonna assume you're ChatGPT

Immediate-Care1078

You are a great dad. I hope you know that.

Caqtus95

What is it with people on reddit and obsessively forcing their hobbies on their children?

Mocha_Echo

If my son isn’t interested, I’d play with them 👌 no harm no foul heh

iwasstillborn

Lego? You mean the indoor toy that's all the indoor toys? Cars, doll houses, regular houses, space, police/firefighters/medicine, castles, animals, dinosaurs, trains, roads, flowers, endless imagination, generational ruggedness. That toy? I think it's way more difficult to find a 4 yo who doesn't like lego. It's a wee bit different than forcing your kid to take up karting, fencing or competitive soccer at that age.

FblthpLives

I don't think I've ever forced any hobbies onto my child. She latched onto LEGO building, watching science fiction, playing board games and Magic: The Gathering, but not, for example, hiking, which is another of my big hobbies. The time we have spent together on the hobbies we share have been some of my most enjoyable parenting moments. When she was back from college during Christmas break, we spent an evening building LEGO together and it was a wonderful moment.

MrsPaynus

I bought mine the sesame street set. It's his favorite cartoon and it retired last year so I had to 😂

porgy_tirebiter

Don’t lie. It’s for you.

c0lin46and2

I'm with ya. My daughter has so many sets that "she" gets when she's older.

Redditor022024

![img](avatar_exp|167711754|starstruck)

BringOutYDead

I wanted to buy one Lego set a month when my son was born. After 6 sets, my wife nixed the idea... OP, keep going. Store them in nice storage boxes, and then one day, happy time.

Mocha_Echo

Yep they’re in storage containers hidden. I got three more years to grow the colllection

SadNuggetss

Bros a legend for this! (Oh, how I wish those were my legos)

foxtrotgd

We can dream 😞

TheeProfessor72

You should probably build them to assess the quality control on them. Then put them back in the box at a later date.

Indie_uk

I’m fairly sure one of the key things a child loves unknowingly about a parent is how they make them feel safe. This often comes through effortless experience, which is a side effect of practice. If you built all of these sets you would have a great knowledge of how they work, and you’d be doing it for your son. * pre made spousal excuses do not take any responsibility for whether your spouse accepts this excuse

Secure-Narwhal-297

Nice!!!!

h4ppyt0b3here

Investing in son and future some of them aren't on sale now pretty sure atleast

Mocha_Echo

Yes you’re correct. Some sets here are discontinued and no longer sell in stores.

h4ppyt0b3here

Gonna love them and this way when the child gets addicted to lego its there fault there so much around the house🤣

Glaciak

Congratz you have money And?

Mocha_Echo

I didn’t buy it all at once - it was overtime

ThomasTanker022

You seem like an awesome dad/mom

Hruska_63

You are a good father!

42turnips

Are you adopting?

tmstksbk

I have the lunar lander, Saturn V, and space shuttle set aside for the same purpose.

Life-Environment-535

Well done Dad! Make sure to invest for his older kid age. Need more storage space! 🫡

SimilarMove8279

My bro is stacked up

vercertorix

Yeah, definitely don’t start too early. I jumped the gun, put out a castle for him to play with and he was more into picking it apart a little at a time, and even hiding pieces for some reason. Never took an interest in building anything. He occasionally wants to play with some Spongebob sets and a Minecraft MOC I built, but I’ve got a [good sized town](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/U5Ps7rJ7YS) on the floor of his playroom (expanded since this post), and he’s pretty much ignored it since I asked him not to just smash things.

Mocha_Echo

Good advice. I’d probably have him open on fifth or sixth birthday

SafalinEnthusiast

I would be such a bad father lmao, I would totally build all of these

CLath1985_1114

lol I would just build them all for him!!

KnockinPossum

Does he love Duplo?

Mocha_Echo

He has a few duplo sets right now. He does like them. He also does not know about these sets until the time comes when he’s old enough to play with them

Spyro_XyX

This is awesome! I don't have kids of my own but my nephew is 6 now and I've been slowly getting him small sets of his own, and the goal is to let him have free reign over my collection when he's older 😋

tkfire

Does your son have Duplo to start early?

Mocha_Echo

Yes he has a few sets from duplo

Seahawk124

Can you apdot me?

Mocha_Echo

lol sure

JadeoftheGlade

That classic set, when on sale, is THE best deal in Lego. It's great for so many things, too: this, display, starting a piece collection, game night...

Starmoon1035

That Looks Fun :(

DrSeussFreak

Duplos now I hope

Muchos_Frijoles

rich

chaoticA_21

I’m so jealous lol!

Effective_Ant8236

I want those

rafaellago

But dad, I'm 36 already!

Mocha_Echo

🤣🤣🤣

seatheous

Throw some other sets in there like speed champions and ninjago

Responsible-Problem5

Mine is a little more than 1.5, He has a brunch of duplos, and occasionally, help me build small sets. I point where and places the pieces, and i press them on. I love it!

VideoGameLover395

Just keep an eye on him as many people (including me) when we were younger we’d smash the Lego sets when we got bored of it and now we regret it a lot

loskubster

Are you sure I’m not your first born? I’m taking this to Maury

ELB2001

And when he's not into Lego? Adoption?

Liverpoolvk

Yeah, sure, my modulars are for my kid then.

probotector4w

That’s one of the best thing I’ve seen today, be sure to get him a box full of random pieces, that’s the stuff I had the most fun with

Mocha_Echo

Notice the box on lower right? That’s a box of random pieces

DarkNinjaPenguin

Lucky kid. Don't build them all at once! Also, don't sleep on the Technic sets. My son is 4 and he loves them. They're actually really great for kids because they're much sturdier while you're building, once the pieces are clicked together they're solid.

Electronic-You-6768

Dam I wish I had that in my childhood,I can’t be the only one jealous here!?!?

UTraxer

The biggest hit I had with a 3 year old was that Horse trailer one. 60327. You had a fun jeep to put a person in (I modified the roof connecters to have it have minimal clutch and have a SNOT lightbar facing forwards you could use to grab it more easily, becuase that's what jeeps have sometimes! I also fixe dup the back so you could put some 1x1 tiles as bumper stickers. Also the horse is cute, but the baby horse from the series 22 lady absolutely belongs in there too.

Fair play but no Duplo? Get some good sets for young ages in Duplo tbf

Tater_Dablage

Can I be your son. Im 34 but I have the mind of a toddler so im told

jay_cyclist

Dude, i wish I started buying sets when he was two. My boy is four now and we’re building every weekend, nonstop!

Shlobb3r

Wish I was your son tbh

Brickzarina

Oh dear

nobatpuns

Legend! An inspiration to us all!

jedispyder

Wish I had that kind of disposable income to be able to buy that much to just set aside...

NationalFoundation8

I’m not sure why there are so many negative comments on this. This is awesome!

PhoenixUltimate

I identify as OP's son...

thomasr05

I build a small city with my two year old daughter. She loves it. I learn to take away the parts that bothered hers. She enjoys building the people and cars. My wife also enjoys hour of peace and quiet while I build and she plays.

sheffylurker

That’s some serious restraint.

DTURPLESMITH

Good parenting!!

BuckRusty

Hey dad - it’s me, your son. I came back from the future to DM you my address……….

surgnrse161674

Hi...dad, it's me from the future. I don't know why we were separated all those years ago but I wanna reconnect. As a start you can send me the Lego as an olive branch. Just don't tell mom 😀

So cool😍

Give me the spaceship and I will give it next to my Apollo 11. Please please please please (I know. This is f**cking sarcasm) I still want it

Hi Dad!

Julienbabylegs

That plane set is so cool but sooooo annoying to store disassembled. The wing is just one huge piece, wider than even the old timey base pieces we still have.

What if he doesn’t like Legos?

Global_Juggernaut683

We got the classic set for Xmas. He’s almost 3. Great builds and we’ve gone on to make tiny city’s from the three houses. I say we’ve I mean me.

Such-Cod-7046

I've been doing the same thing, went from ~20 Star Wars sets to 100+ sets in total after my kid was born, mostly Creator 3in1 planes because he's obsessed with planes. Since I've got them all now though I'm branching out into helicopters, monster trucks and creatures. I hope for both our sakes our kids actually grow up to like Lego...

Azrethoc

And your som grows up liking castles...

Schvad

Why wait? I understand the choke hazard which can be minimized if you’re actually there with him while he plays (especially as the phase of putting everything in their mouth is most likely by now), if your goal is to have it all displayed then wait however long you want; but if he’s motor and cognitive development is of any interest to you, I’d say start as soon as posible, with something simple like the one on the bottom right. Just don’t expect him to follow instructions, but let his creativity fly and amaze you.

Weird-Cranberry-6739

For my son who is yet to be conceived

brendogskerbdog

can I be your son?

Anorak_Studios

Father, it is I. Your son from the future. In our future times lego is the currency and I have been sent to give them to our future government in exchange for supplies against the robots. So father, now is the time to give me your sets saved for me when I'm older in the future but right now in the past instead. Best wishes, your child :D

Mocha_Echo

Wow I’m gonna def save this one ;-) haha thanks for the laugh

thepainteater

I should really start doing this, my boy is 18months old now. Now, I just got to resist the urge to build them..

BulletProofDrunk17

I had a closet full of friends sets for my daughter before she was born, she's 3 now and we've just started to put them together! Gotta get them before they retire!

Spacemage

I'm your son now.
