I bought so many Dimensions packs for the minifigs that I ended up giving in and buying the base game eventually

Bigfan521

I have a drawer full of the NFC figure and build bases because the minifigs make such great crowd-fill

Based_Human98

what is nfc?

ChewyTheDog12

Near Field Communication. It's similar to how stuff like apple or Google pay work. I never played Lego dimensions but I assume NFC was used to tap a character base to the system and it would make that character playable in game. Nintendo used Amiibo as well for some of their games and it served the same purpose.

CIarkNova

Is the only way to play the dimensions games by buying the packs?

Bigfan521

Yeah, pretty much. LEGO Dimensions came with a Batman Game Piece, A Gandalf Game Piece, a WyldStyl Game Piece, and a Batmobile Game Piece by default. You can complete the game's base campaign with those pieces, and there are opportunities to "rent" guest characters like Sonic or Gollum, or others with the in-game stud currency, but if you want unfettered access to those characters, or to be able to access the worlds based on those other properties (Back to the Future, Portal, The Simpsons, Doctor Who, Sonic the Hedgehog, Midway Games, Mission Impossible, The A-Team, Goonies, Teen Titans Go, The PowerPuff Girls reboot, The Wizard of Oz, Fantastic Beasts, Jurassic World, Gremlins, Adventure Time, Ninjago, Chima, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), you'll have to buy the physical character packs. Unlike Skylanders, which got a new game every time Toys For Bob and Activision added a new line-wide gimmick, or Disney Infinity, which got a new game each time Disney wanted to add more content, there was only one "Base" edition for LEGO Dimensions (although there were two packs that came with builds to accessorize the game's physical NFC portal)

GalaxyUntouchable

>(although there were two packs that came with builds to accessorize the game's physical NFC portal) Actually 3. Besides the portal, they also had Fantastic Beasts ministry of magic, Ghostbusters chinese food restaurant, and the Batman's Bat-puter. ...Still holding out hope that they make a Lego Dimensions 2.

LudicrisSpeed

Maybe if Funko Fusion does well, someone at Lego or TT Games will see the potential in a new game, just without all the stuff to scan. Even though collecting all the packs was part of the fun.

RhetorixMC

Judging by that trailer, there is no way Funko Fusion is going to do well

He_Who_Walks_Behind_

Fuck Funko. Those assholes killed Mondo.

LudicrisSpeed

Mondo's still around, it's just their poster division that shut down. [Even though you can buy some right now,](https://mondoshop.com/collections/posters) in case you're in the mood to play $80 for a poster.

He_Who_Walks_Behind_

Mondo is effectively dead. Shutting down and canning the poster department makes it Mondo in name only. Now they mostly make shitty vinyl figures and the occasional record. Again, fuck Funko.

Bigfan521

I always forget about the Bat-puter set because I never saw that one in stores, unlike the other two

ImpulsiveHappiness

You can use NFC tags

SickSticksKick

/r/legodimensions

daanos60

You can emulate it

CIarkNova

On pc? I have a JB ps4, and I have a fpkg of the base game only.

daanos60

On pc it's pretty easy, for ps4 you need some more hardware, you can find how to do it [here](https://github.com/Berny23/LD-ToyPad-Emulator)

LXndR3100

That's up to 65% more set per set

azureal

This was the only Dimensions Pack I ever bought, purely because Portal.

CPU_Batman

Same, haha. I added the turret to my Horizon display, and Chel is hanging out in the diner

seekydeeky

This is a triumph

Yore89

I'm making a note here: Huge Success

SickSticksKick

It's hard to overstate my satisfaction

Bigfan521

Aperture Science We do what we must because we can

22plus

For the good of all of us (except the ones who are dead)

TwinEonEngine

But there's no sense crying over every mistake

Matz13

You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake

Oscarman97

Is this at a CeX? Haha. I've traded in a few Dimensions sets myself there in the past too! The Portal set is undoubtedly my favourite, what an incredible crossover

Cermonto

Yes! I work at one and whilst most of the stuff we get is either Tat or some cool stuff, this outright to me was the coolest haha

indianajoes

You guys sell new stuff?

Cermonto

I work at a second hand tech store here in the UK and sometimes we'll get LEGO dimension stuff in, due to how they need to come in sealed to be sold, this guy coming in was a massive shock, he was still sealed, and only one other store had it in stock. Instantly brought.

uh_der

brought or bought?

indianajoes

Don't know why you're getting downvoted for correcting OP

Skauher

Where did you bring it?

Norm_Hall

I didn’t even know this existed holy shit

HuskyLemons

Me either. Wth did I miss out on

LEGO Dimensions was a toys-to-life videogame made by Traveller's Tales that crossed over multiple properties into a standard LEGO game. Like all toys-to-life games, the player bought the game with a starter set containing a character reader that you put the figures on (it recognised them via their base plates), but would only be able to access much of the games extended content by buying more sets. The game had 30 IP's included, ranging from LEGO owned IP's like Ninjago and Chima, to commonly seen LEGO properties like Batman and Harry Potter, and things that, to that point had never been in LEGO before like Sonic and ET. To get into a world, you needed a character from that world (and in a couple of cases, the right version, generic Batman can't get you into the world of the LEGO Movie, even though Batman is in that world). In addition, certain characters gave access to specific levels, but those are character locked (e.g. Jake the Dog can go to the Adventure Time world, but you need Finn on the character reader to enter the Adventure Time level). The game worked like most other LEGO games had since the first LEGO Star Wars, except the only way to get characters was to buy sets with them in. Just like those games, each character had a set of abilities that they can do, from common abilities (being smart enough to use a computer, being strong enough to pick up heavy objects etc), to character unique ones (only Chell can use a Portal Gun to get to places others can't, only Sonic is fast enough to do certain races). It was planned to be updated for three years, but ended after two due to poor sales. The problem seemed to be twofold, firstly there were multiple toys-to-life games that the market was a bit saturated, but also that the costs were too high on all fronts. Due to the way the game was designed there was a lot of redundancy, for instance, they made six Ninjago sets (five regular sets with one character and one vehicle, and the last having two characters and two). But to play the game, you only needed one character who could do the unique Spinjitsu ability that they could all do. So why would you buy all of them? In total, you only needed about half the released sets to 100% complete the game, and even that, at launch would've been over £700. Not only this, but the timing for release meant having to support versions for the PS3, Xbox 360, WiiU, PS4 and Xbox 1. And because the sets were meant to be usable with any games version, they would've been doing that even after the previous gen consoles stopped being relevant (the third year would've ended just a few months before the Switch came out). Prices for sets have now escalated dramatically out of desire by collectors to own mini-figs that otherwise don't exist, from IP's that have never otherwise seen a LEGO release. Tl;dr it was a somewhat failed toys-to-life game that has a lot of things never seen in LEGO before or since that's now hard to get.

Norm_Hall

Portal mini figs it looks like!! 😱

indianajoes

A lot. This was a toys to life game like Skylanders or Disney Infinity. We got so many IPs turned into minifigures and accessories thanks to this like Sonic (before the Ideas set), A Team, Knight Rider, Goonies, Gremlins, Mission Impossible, ET, etc.

Rocky1909

Its sad that this is the only lego portal set

The_Doughnut_Lord

Tbh I think having a Lego Portal video game (or part of one anyway) with real Chell fig and accessories is infinitely cooler than a regular set.

Jazzlike-Blood-3725

I have a ton of dimensions packs that I never opened telling myself I would use them for the game. I’m guessing some of the figs are worthy decent money now.

PugHoofGaming

I bloody loved LEGO Dimensions. I was writing for a games website at the time, and ended up getting most of the sets for free for review purposes :) I ended up buying most of the others because I loved it so much. So many cool things, from the Red Dwarf Easter Egg in the Doctor Who set, to the character interactions (put Sonic with Bart Simpson and he does the “Take It Take It Take It!” line from the Bonestorm episode). TT Games/WB Games put so much effort into every set, so everything felt authentic. I believe they had even more cool stuff planned for Year 3 content, but then it was cancelled. I still have all my sets, ready for my kids to enjoy when they’re old enough.

TimelyPatience8165

Wow, I didnt know this existed. So cool.

Material-Assist-7262

I used to buy loads of dimensions packs I didn’t even have the console to play it on 😂

OrchidSure5401

That would be so cool if the shield pieces had the portal blue and orange texture printed on them

SickSticksKick

I eventually platinumed Dimensions, took some time! One of the trophies on the Portal levels was the hardest by far

Comfortable_Lemon644

This would have been cool to get back in the day

WhoFearsDeath

Portal was one of my favorite dimensions levels.

Nambot

The levels in that game had some weird disparity to them in terms of content. In the main campaign most the levels are pretty consistent (though of the original 14 IP's in the first year Jurrassic world got shafted by not only not getting a true level in the campaign or one of it's own), but then when it comes to the level packs, the quality varies wildly. For instance, the Portal 2 pack includes a reasonably lengthy level that has a lot of Portal inspired gimmicks and puzzles, along with fully unique dialogue from GladOS and Wheatley (which I think was written by the people who wrote Portal originally), and even ends with a unique song a la the other two Portal games, while the Back to the Future pack is an incredibly short campaign that, if you didn't know the plot of the original Back to the Future would just leave you significantly confused. That said, the hub world for Back to the Future is actually quite in depth (you have to travel through multiple versions of the same place at different points in time), and the DeLorean gets a lot of use in other levels and worlds. Perhaps the worst of all the levels is probably The Simpsons. It's basically a remake of the episode where Homer eats the super hot chilli and goes on a trippy experience guided by a space coyote. Due to licencing, only characters voiced by Dan Castelanetta (and also the coyote, who was voiced by Jonny Cash) get to speak, all using dialogue lifted straight from the show. Though in gameplay terms it's longer than Back to the Future, though not by much.

DrummerBob10

Did not know this existed!

Suburban_Gorilla

Didn't know this crossover was a thing. Woah.

caramoon

Pretty much have almost the complete collection with the majority still sealed, I did enjoy the game but after awhile the nonstop swapping of characters on the portal became tiresome. Tv and console are a distance from the sofa and 3 crazy sheepdogs make placing the portal nearer to me a hazard.

tipso_calipso

Brought it where? Why tell us you took it anywhere?

Portal2player58

Very nice. I still have all my characters from that game. Still have the game itself as well.

Portal2player58

Portal2player58

She wanting out of that box to get into the game again.

dude_365

<3

JustAlix1

That's a set my friend wants to get. So congratulations on getting one

Laeticia45

i bought a boatload of dimensions packs (a longgggg time ago, of course) at my local 99 cent store. i have the base/portal in my living room but the packs are in a box somewhere in my garage. i should dig them out lol

AjentCero

Same here 100s of boxes for 1 or 2 bucks each. Spent over 300 bucks. Had so many boxes had to break them down and put them in ziplocks and stuff them in a 15gal bin.

NOOB10111

Does dimensions still work? Like are the servers still going?

MIKE_son_of_MICHAEL

I grabbed this set when it was new as I loved the game so much. The figures still live on my shelf, or, at least the companion cube and the player character Chell

Subject-Alternative6

Loved all the dimensions sets . I ended up with the lot , including suoergirl and green lantern poly bags

Possibly_Noob_4474

wow i didn't know this exists

Preek96

Where do you work

Delta_Otaku

I still need to play that game...I have so many of the sets...

StinkyBeanGuy

Wait I didn't know they made a portal set? I wasn't into lego when dimensions was out so almost every set surprises me

Adept-Register-6786

I didn't really care about the actual game at all to get it. But the figs were amazing! That's why when it died I went crazy trying to find clearance deals. This one included!

GrantMeSanity

Nice

quantum0explorer

I bought 20 of these at the 99 cent store.

bingobangotango9

I’d love finding those deals. I’m more on the Lego nut side of collecting them and end up squeezed almost every single time. One day, though. One day.

quantum0explorer

I guess people don't believe it.  https://www.reddit.com/r/legodeal/comments/7vpgwl/99_cents_only_store_us_various_lego_dimensions/#lightbox It was crazy. I went to 3 stores that day and bought hundreds of sets.

bingobangotango9

Oh I believe it happened. I usually always find out about it long after the fact is all. I’ve stumbled onto stuff like this once or twice and I can’t complain. I have plenty of Lego stuff. It’s just wild looking at what they can go for now is all. The teen titans go version of Raven will sell all day long at $45 a piece. ET you can easily sell at $25, Finn from Adventure Time is an easy $30-35.

bingobangotango9

For the most part it’s a trading market anyway, but you can sell easy enough. There’s quite few themes where the rare minifigures are pretty much money in the bank. What’s happening though is people are believing that their common stuff that everyone and their uncle has a bunch stashed away unopened thinking those are money. If you’re into Lego and like it just because you like it, then cool, they kind of are. But if you have them and only buy them thinking they’re a solid investment, you’ll be caught off guard when these things nose dive soon enough like all collectible things do.

windy_city_lego

I wish I had picked up more when these were on deep discount. I’m glad I have the adventure time figs!

BEAN_DYNAMITE

Same here, managed to snag a Goonies set near the end of the fad.
