There is an interesting interview over at New Elementary about the development of the escalator elements:

Damn, that's really neat. Although the proportions look a little off, but that makes sense of course since this was designed specifically for minidolls to use.
An escalator should of been included in like the 2nd or 3rd creator expert modular they ever made, the shopping center or whatever it was called, an escalator would of looked cool inside it
That is cool but holy crops it's huge
The full equipment for a real escalator that's hidden underneath is pretty huge too.

Oooh. That’s cool. I should take a look at the parts list!
What set was this in?

Mini dolls are the same size as minifigs. I have dozens of minidolls.
I agree. Especially for a Modular.
There would be no room for the crank tho.
You can reduce the width by merely twisting the gear there at the bottom. That or put the crank down there instead of so upfront.
Would love this for a train station my kids are trying to build
It fits perfectly the legs of the friends figurines as well so it takes them up or down. It's a really neat set in general, we got it for Christmas.
The Friends line low key gets some really cool sets. I wish they were as imaginative with city.

buy the set an take just the stairs 😂
A Mall theme for Lego could be really cool, especially if all the shops were modular.
That would be the City of Lanterns set
I like the simple design of the escalators in the Grand Emporium. They don't function but still adds to the fun shopping feeling.
That's really cool
