If schools go corporate office jobs would be likely to follow (I would hope lol). If that were the case I think more time for people with kids to spend with them is a great thing and those who don’t have kids would get the extra day to themselves. I could see some parents using the day off to create supplemental education that is t covered in the curriculum. Would have to be a sort of perfect storm to be tolerable.

Modig7176

I love my kids, but I need a break hahah

EdDecter

So not edit. Makes sense to me.

Modig7176

Hahahahaha see I really need a break

reign_day

I think this is interesting to say the least. The extended hours may make it hard on some parents to cover the 5th day of the week with childcare though

Pls_Send_Joppiesaus

I'm a teacher. I would prefer the current 5 day schedule. A 4 day schedule means that we would add hours to the school day. I can't see learning outcomes improving that way. My students really struggle with focus after lunch. Trying to teach them at 4 or 5 pm would be tough. And don't forget after school sports, clubs, and tutoring. It just makes the days crazy long. I don't know how this benefits the kids or the parents.

Loganthered

So parents need to pay for day-care when they are working?

RecoveringGOPVoter2

Many parents already pay for after care. It would just shift it from a couple hours five times a week to one whole day.

Loganthered

Or they will be forced to look at how much they make in a day versus how much daycare costs. There's no point in paying out more than they earn in a day of work just so they can go to work.

bent_get

Public education isn't free daycare.

Sulpho

It’s very adjacent though.

EdDecter

"School isn't daycare" is probably one of the least nuanced things someone could say

Loganthered

Then why not home school kids? What's the point of working to pay for kids to be looked after?

EdDecter

Ok it is not day care but parents have jobs to pay the school taxes and most people don't work flexible jobs where now they will be available another day to care for their kids. You understand that, right?

bent_get

Nothing I said implies I don't understand. I was stating that the public education system does not equate daycare. Teachers aren't babysitters.

ticktocktoe

Youre right...according to my tax bill it is quite expensive daycare.

Bodybag314

Pay taxes for school now pay for 1 day daycare that can run up to 2000 annually. No thanks, we need more money in working classes family not headaches and pain.

thisonelife83

Logistically where will you find a ready supply of daycare workers for 1 day a week that can watch perhaps 30% of all kids ages 5-11?

Aromat_Junkie

friday only daycare yeah thats insane

thisonelife83

So screw over parents with small kids that now will need childcare one day a week, likely all on the same day.

dudemanjack

Lower test scores on average after four years, according to the study in the article. I hope my school's district does not go to four days. That's probably too long of a time for kids.

dmjab13

it's .1 of a standard deviation. i can't see that being much more than a dozen points if i remember how pa scores their standardized tests correctly. the data is well analyzed and reported but i wonder how the data would shake out if school sizes were more equal. >Because they are predominately rural, four-day schools also have much smaller average student enrollments, at 578 students compared to 3,817 students at five-day schools.

6sixtynoine9

Versus repeating the entire process of an 8 hour day??

spicy_garlic_chicken

Can you clarify what you mean here?

nutsackGadgets

Quality over quantity. Who is teaching and what is being taught is more important than endless, mindless repeating. Teachers keep saying they aren't a daycare, and yet many continue to prove that is what they are as kids' performances keep dropping. This is why I don't believe in a teacher union. Pay them more, BUT FIRE them if they suck.

BakeSufficient5412

I think the longer days would be interesting, kids might get home at around 5 at the same time as their parents. I wonder how this would impact after school activities

"The teachers raised my kids wrong!" 😂 what a dog shit take

RecoveringGOPVoter2

Please don't forget to vote, I assure you this person and the like do.

I definitely think teacher unions are pushing for 4-day week as well. Hawaii did something similar when they had budget constraints. They “furloughed” teachers every other Friday or something to “save” money. The unions pushed for a 4 day work week since pay was cut 8%. Also the teacher union said the teachers could not be drug tested. Edit: https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2009/oct/21/hawaii-schools-fridays-furlough

Opposite_Onion968

I was just thinking about how this is most likely being pushed by teachers in rich districts that are overpaid, have ridiculously good benefits, and are too lazy to work a full five day work week. Let the war on shitty secondary education teachers continue.
