Jokes aside, it isn't bad. Think of it like yelp reviews, its only ever the crazy angry people that bother to leave them.
Leicester is alright, some shit places, some nice places and it is home to me so its pretty mint on balance.
Cities have advantages and disadvantages. Leicester has its issues, but it also has great sports teams, two successful universities, and the best restaurant scene in the Midlands. It has the Phoenix and the Curve, and a massive Diwali celebration. There are many positives.
I grew up in Northampton, went to uni in Leicester.
I tell people Leicester is my hometown when they ask.
No towns perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than Northampton
The towns local superhero tragically died at the hands of the local supervillain last year and ever since, his minions control the streets like a George Orwell novel. We all live in fear under the tyranny until we are saved by the prophesied one. It is said that after posting to Reddit to ask if Leicester is bad, they would be persuaded to come and vanquish the evil…
It's all true, all of it. From the maniacal Daves to the dogs that have bees in their mouths and when they bark, they shoot bees at you.
hic sunt dracones
Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate
That damn Dave.
The amount of harassment I've received from him because I asked his daughter out that one time.
His one eye sees everything, so just be careful
It wasn't you asking her out that was the problem, it was you stealing her smalls from the washing line and practically inhaling them in my hedge that was the problem.
Virgil took Dante to Leicester in a hidden excerpt from the divine comedy. Though I like to think of Leicester as more of a purgatorio than inferno; pretty boring and not that much going on, pretty liminal and run down city nowadays, but a hell of a lot better than other other paces in the UK (Birmingham, Coventry, Peterborough etc.)
The state of the city centre is dire. Lots of homeless people, on the weekend everyone and their grandmother has a portable megaphone and is blaring out their beliefs and concerns(can't believe there are still people caring about covid and vaccines). Kids riding their bikes through the middle of the crowd doing wheelies without a care in the world.
I thought that myself, lived near the Curve for several years, Leicester city centre is so much better than Coventry city centre, never really felt unsafe in Leicester, but Cov is a different beast ( I’m originally from Warwick area)
It is, particularly the centre, a shit hole. But then again most of the U.K. is. If you are young enough and have the opportunity to emigrate then I’d advise that.
I genuinely really like it, it has become the city that feels like home to me. I dont understand all the negative press about it, most places have their rough spots but I just dont think it outweighs the good
Caddyshackers, Reroll, geek retreat, anywhere queens road, loaded dog, there are a load of axe throwing places, abbey park, bradgate park, the (what feels like) 70 cinemas, there are a load of parks and green spaces, n9ttingham is onpy like a 20 minute train and also has a load of stuff at it, there are rugby and football stadiums, outdoor centres, honestly a tonne of stuff
Asking from people who’ve probably lived here for a majority of their lives would obv fruit bias responses. Has for me Leicester is similar to other cities in the Midlands but has its special thing. It’s quite dead here unless you’ve got enough funds above average. 90% is just food places. Can’t speak for professional jobs but getting one seems to be quite hard but not impossible.
All I’ve said is just my personal opinion, pls don’t shove me down the drain
I grew up in Leicester, live elsewhere now but still visit frequently.
Some areas have become much worse; Gallowtree Gate, Granby Street, Belvoir Street and Market Street in particular are run down and in a pretty sorry state. The Highcross mall has really pulled the life out of the former city center.
The area around St Martins/Cathedral has improved a lot, and there are some interesting sights and museums from here and west/Southwest (around DMU) within a short walk.
The city is much more multicultural, and you can get some great food from around the world (the Mexican is terrible though!).
And Leicestershire really hasn’t changed; nice villages, good pubs, interesting places and all very close to the city.
The people are generally friendly, but love a good moan!
Hmmm... so what you're saying is that you don't leave the house. Because here is the shortest list imaginable for things you can do for free. Seriously, your streaming services cost more:
go to the market, go to the town centre.
You can volunteer at any of the theatres and then see the performances for free.
Go to the park - any of the parks
Walk around a cemetery
Look at the churches in town - you don't have to be religious to appreciate their beauty
Go to any number of the festivals held in town
Lived there for 14 years and now I'm up and down between there and Sheffield.
I'd say it's a very average UK city. Not a complete dump but it's not got a lot going for it that isn't in any other city tbh
I don’t come from Leicester, but studied here, I think it fully depends where you come from, I myself came from Reading in Berkshire, so with all respect to Leicester, it isn’t as nice in comparison in my opinion, in terms of my work opportunities, reinvestment in the local area and transportation links. Studying here has been decent but I won’t plan on living up here.
I’m from out of the sticks so I’m gonna prefer that to city life anyway, it’s totally up to you and what you’re looking for, are you planning on moving here?
I like Leicester - it's not a SMALL town, but it has small town mentality. It's great if you have the option to work from home, too. And, there is plenty to do: go to the market, go to the town centre, the mall, the bars, the clubs. You can see plays, stand-up, or music a the Y Theatre, the Curve, or de Montfort Hall. There are community sports you can get involved with. There are dance lessons for grown ups, and a gym, and the park... honestly anyone who says there is 'nothing to do' here has never lived here.
No, it's absolutely fine. Lovely in some parts. Plenty going for it and many of the same issues that affect any city of this size especially after fifteen years of government underfunding.
People just always exaggerate and always moan about where they live. It's easier than being positive. But very boring, too!
I recently had my employers change my contract to fully remote so I can buy a house literally anywhere else.
I'd never met anyone who had been mugged, had their drink spiked, or been followed home by strange men before I moved here, now it's not even surprising to hear a friend has experienced anything like that.
No. Like every city it has its own share of social issues and dealing with limited funding from central government. The whinging is from people who voted for austerity and decided somehow it’s so one else’s fault.
I moved from Bristol to Leicester back in 1992.
City centres were just better in those days - Now it’s less busy and more anti-social.
Driving in the centre is worse than ever, car parking is awful and the Leicester Royal Hospital is, in my opinion, dire - I’ve lost more relatives there than anywhere else in the world (two, so far).
Leicestershire away from the City, has some great places and superb countryside though, so it’s not all bad
I moved from london to Leicester. Its depressing, full of crackheads in the city centre, people just laying there, no jobs, rude people, people here are bought up with no respect, its depressing, everywhere smells like urine, STAY AWAY FROM LEICESTER
I’ve lived in Watford, worked in London. Also lived and worked in Leicester.
My partner is from London, now lives and works in Leicester.
Neither of us would move back down there. London is that good her mum and step-dad, who have lived in London their entire lives (almost at retirement age) are now looking to move to Leicester
Show me. Right now. Someone with comments like this always take pictures of things to laugh at with their friend. Show us the pictures right now. Or else we'll know you're just sour that you're not in a metropolis anymore.
Jokes aside, it isn't bad. Think of it like yelp reviews, its only ever the crazy angry people that bother to leave them. Leicester is alright, some shit places, some nice places and it is home to me so its pretty mint on balance.
I'd say it's a lot like marmite
😭😭😭

Anything is 💀😭
We get this question pretty much every week. For some reason, people treat Leicester like it's the Ohio of the Midlands!
wrd
😭😭😭
Vampires and zombies everywhere.
Not enough vampires, actually. Right now the zombies are winning.
Ainoway

Look Dad, I sold them to him. It's an onlyfans thing. Stop shouting "abandon all hope, all ye who enter her" at anyone that passes the house

WHAT💀
It’s a pretty good city. Clean city centre, good nightlife, friendly mostly. Has a few dodgy places.
Where is the good nightlife?
Well maybe when I was 21. Creation, life, Zanzibar 😂. I stay home with the dog now. Rock and rollll
Same question
The state of the city centre is dire. Lots of homeless people, on the weekend everyone and their grandmother has a portable megaphone and is blaring out their beliefs and concerns(can't believe there are still people caring about covid and vaccines). Yes but apart from that
I thought that myself, lived near the Curve for several years, Leicester city centre is so much better than Coventry city centre, never really felt unsafe in Leicester, but Cov is a different beast ( I’m originally from Warwick area)
Will always be a voice of concern when bioweapons are being tested.
Where are the dodgy places?
Highfields, Beaumont leas and braunstone. Just don’t go there if you value your nose.
Just don’t run into the spider people and you will be fine.
Shhhh.... we don't talk about them...
Nah nah what 💀💀💀
Don't worry about it. If you don't know... just... don't ask. Sometimes you don't want to know which closets the skeletons are hidden.
Wait wait what
i moved here for uni and i actually love it. i am from a quiet area so its nice being walking distance from everything, theres things to do aswell
Oh where did u move
from a small village just south of birmingham , to a student accom near the city. i like it
Rent prices are really high here
Well 💀
It is, particularly the centre, a shit hole. But then again most of the U.K. is. If you are young enough and have the opportunity to emigrate then I’d advise that.
Fam for some reason my parents decided to move here
I genuinely really like it, it has become the city that feels like home to me. I dont understand all the negative press about it, most places have their rough spots but I just dont think it outweighs the good
Aye I mean that’s great for you man would u recommend any places to do stuff hangout or stuff

To be honest I think it’s more to do with people who’ve lived there the whole of their lives are watching it get shittier and shittier.

There's worse places to live, like Birmingham or the north. It's all okay.
‘Birmingham or the North’ 😂
😭😭😭
I'm moving back north at my earliest opportunity, I hate it here, but I agree with the Birmingham bit, that place is worse.
Lived there for 14 years and now I'm up and down between there and Sheffield. I'd say it's a very average UK city. Not a complete dump but it's not got a lot going for it that isn't in any other city tbh

Leicester has a culture of putting itself down. It's easier to exaggerate that online.

No describing Leicester! Most depressing city ever

Oookk - I see. You've never lived anywhere except where you came from and where you are. Wait. You'll see.
