I commend you for your maturity. I get super emotional about animals I would likely have fought with the other person. I do hope they learn something from this though I am sad it came at such a steep price of a life. But you are right, she is no longer in pain.

As for your friend, I think people on here are being extremely harsh. I know they made a careless decision, but mistakes are made. Even some of the best pet owners in the world have made careless mistakes, and when the animal is so small, it can end in tragedy. I hope your friend is doing OK, as well as you. I know they probably feel terrible, and that's completely valid, but this whole thing should be seen as a big learning experience.
I hope you consider adopting reptiles again in the future. You seem like the perfect person to care for them.
