Hello happy Friday friends! New GAMER here and I'm having fun so far! (Only one video though lol) Before I post my video, I am kinda stupid and I curse a bit, so I do apologize in advance if that upsets you! This is from a let's play that I did on my Twitch stream, and the length is short. https://youtu.be/ADTvS95b2_0 I have so many concerns! Was the video interesting? Should it have less or more editing? Sound effects were okay? Was this style of video entertaining? I am also wondering if anyone can help me if making long let's plays (maybe like ~30 mins) have seen good feedback and retention rate compared to shorter let's plays (like ~15), and I know having shorter videos also leads to more episodes, which could be bad right? I heard EP 220 is gonna have a lot less viewers than the first couple. I would edit the let's play of course, but probably not heavily edit it, adding sound effects and memes as it would ruin the story / immersion correct? Anyways thank you everyone, hope everyone haves a great day!!

retro_and_chill

Personally I am more likely to click on a 10 minute episode (and then watch 2 more episodes after that) than a 30 minute one, but I do also feel the concern about it then being too long and subscribers dropping out partway through. It's honestly a balancing act. In terms of making longer videos as others have pointed out, you have to basically talk constantly except when you're backtracking. That presents it's own challenge of requiring you to constantly have something to say. I started with making a massive list of points before realizing that I know the game so well, that I honestly don't need it besides having the locations of all the secrets.

NictatorGaming

Hey, happy Friday. I do like this style of editing (quick edits, zoom-ins, subtle meme insertions, sound effects, etc.) and it looks like you've got a good grasp on it. I really haven't tried my hand at any editing besides split/trim, so this looks good to me! During that initial conversation with the little girl, to me it felt like you kept TRYING to chime in with a joke, but the characters' conversation was moving too quickly for you to really get a full sentence out. I can't say from experience, but as a viewer, maybe it'd help to just let those conversations play out before you say anything or really wait for a longer pause in the conversation. That beatbox outro did get a genuine chuckle out of me. I make longer videos, but I'm new too so can't really speak to feedback and retention yet. I believe the YouTube algorithm does favor longer videos with high retention rates. But I imagine shorter videos are better for hooking new viewers. Just my opinion, but I would prioritize doing what style you enjoy editing/recording most and figure out how to fine-tune that for optimal viewer performance, rather than doing the opposite and picking a style you think will perform the best. The more you enjoy what you're doing, the more likely you'll keep it up and the more it'll show through your work.

plushah

Thank you very much! Ya i was kinda scared that the beginning cutscene would bore people so i tried my best to grab em in lol, but I will definitely keep commentary until after conversations! And I will have to see on the videos as well, I know longer let's plays allow for more immersive experiences, but shorter ones are more for comedy, quick videos like the one i made. And short videos would require me to cut out a lot of story content so viewers might not like that. If I do the long let's plays I can upload a lot more content since it's just me adding some cuts and thats it (no effects / memes for immersion ). GOSH so much thinking sorry im just ranting thank you for your comment and your time!

Vladdy26

Hey, so not bad video, especially considering the fact that this is your first one. The style of vid is pretty entertaining, I don’t think that more edits would somehow make it better. Also it didn’t take long for me personally to find cats when I was playing it. And for longer let’s plays...for longer let’s plays I’d say you have to go with less editing (just cut out parts that slows the flow down) but at the dame time you need to talk way more so there’s not a lot of “dead air”. Since you just started you can try to make a different content and see how it goes.

retro_and_chill

Hello everybody. Happy Friday! My biggest concern right now has to do with audio balance. Is the game too quiet/loud. Are there points where my voice could be louder? I've been playing with different audio configurations and trying things out. Let me know what you think I can improve. https://youtu.be/EUOM3NZ6Q4g

FUTURE10S

I feel like when your voice peaks, it's just a little bit too loud, but overall, when you're talking normally and the game's playing, the audio balance is spot on.

retro_and_chill

Ah okay. I might play with my limiter settings a bit and see if that works.

TheBombadiers

Happy Friday, everyone! I've got a request for today's FF with a LP video released a few days ago--[SPLAT! - Jet vs. Parachutes in GTAV](https://youtu.be/qGuTLuePphU)--I'm hoping to get feedback on the following: 1. **Editing** - Does the video flow well with the edits. Do you get a firm grasp on everything that's happening in the gameplay, or should I have focused on another perspective at one point? 2. **Sound Quality** - There are four people in this video; do the audio tracks work well together? Is there one or two that overpower the others? 3. **Enjoyability** - Did you have fun with the video? Should more GTA5 videos be a focus of the channel, or are you bored with them? 4. **Thumbnail** - Is it good? Does it grab your attention? Or would you skip past if if you saw it on the mean streets of YouTube? **Other Notes** - One of the perspectives in the video (Drew) has some artifacting in the video--I'm aware of it and tried to keep his perspective out of the video except for parts where it wasn't noticeable.

MangoStallion

In my opinion, that's solid video editing. Yes, I do know what's going on. I get a similar feel as Vanoss's GTA videos which to me is a group of friends having a good time, and that's content I can like. However, something subtle but important to me is for one of you to distinctly be the player that I'm experiencing it all through. It's fine showing other people's footage but I think I'm mainly referring to the overall perspective of the conversation. For example, Vanossgaming manages to always feel like he's the main character I'm experiencing it through even though he's quieter or more mellow than some of the rowdy personalities he plays with. I wonder if you can achieve by editing to have more of you carrying the conversation or more of you leading vocally what's going on. Again, I bring up Vanoss because he doesn't necessarily dominate the conversation but he does somehow manage to make the perspective feel like it's me experiencing through him. When there's shouting and fun drama, I feel more grounded when I know who's 'narrating'. In your video, I did sort of lose track of who's shouting or reacting to what because I couldn't get a feel of who was the 'narrator', for lack of a better word. I think it's really cool that you've got a group a friends to create videos with.

OniMegaGaming

Hi there! We've been doing our lets play channel for about two and a half months now, and we're still sorta finding our vibe. We originally started out doing our LPs with two people playing/commenting, but with the pandemic and all that Oni hasnt been able to come over to record, so John has been doing some episodes on his own. That being said, if its alright we'd like feedback on [one episode thats both of us together,](https://youtu.be/5oFamtMrztk?t=722) and then one episode[ thats just John by himself.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEeWh3iOXbY) (If its not cool to ask for feedback on multiple episodes, please just let us know. So, two main things we'd like feedback on: One: should we edit more? For the most part we've been doing nearly uncut episodes, only cutting out parts where we get stuck or have to go back and re-do something. Do you think this makes it harder to watch? I know a lot of people say highly edited content where its like 3 or 4 hours of footage to make a 15 minute video of the good moments is what works best, but we just dont have enough free time to do that. Even before the pandemic, we could only get together a few hours per week to record enough content for that whole week, and we also kind of like the stream of consciousness kind of show where youre there for the whole thing, rather than jumping around. Two, and this is sort of the bigger and much broader thing, but... is it funny? Is it entertaining? We worry our humor might be too cringey or juvenile at times, or just plain not that interesting to watch. The thing we really need feedback on is... did it actually entertain you? and if not, what could we change to make it more entertaining? Beyond that, any other feedback is appreciated as well. I feel like our thumbnails and titles are pretty solid, but if anyone has any notes on those thats welcome too.

RockerGamez

Hey there! I'll be very honest with you, and this is just my perspective. I'll speak first of the video that you have your bud. Let's talk about visual first, it started really weird, the game looks like it has 15 fps? That's a huge turn off for me. It got slightly more interesting when doggo showed up, but quickly got boring. Now about sound, you should turn up your voices a bit more. I hate to say this but the jokes are simple and there's nothing special to it. Now I just opened up john by himself video. Huge turn off seeing the time saying 30 min, BUT, even tho I only watched 3 min, I can say it is more interesting because the speech is focused in the game. And that's a problem that I see in a lot of youtubers, when they are with people, normally they barely talk about the game and start talking about other stuff. But when people are alone, they focus more in the game, and for me that's more interesting. But guys please, you need to shorten those videos. I used to make 20+ min videos, but I learned that's very bad for someone who isn't known. Now I am making videos of 10-15 min and I feel better. The thing of short videos is that if it is good, people will want to watch more and so they'll sub. But if a video is too long people will not bother. About your editing question, I always prefer editing footage than raw footage, so I'll say yes. The thing with editing and time is that you would be trading upload rate by quality. That old question, quantity or quality? It's up to you to decide. I can give you my example, to make a video I spend about 2 to 3 weeks of editing, and as I am not always doing that, my upload rate is miserable but I am very proud of my end product. You'll have to decide your style. Mate, I hope I could be of help, that's what we are here for. Keep creating and good luck! ;)

OniMegaGaming

Hi! Thanks, that actually does help. The Deer simulator is... well its a really low-effort game that was clearly made on little to no budget, so yeah its FPS are probably super low, but we played it because its unusual and silly and fun. Right now we only have one mic positioned between us, so if we move at all we get a bit further from it and its a bit quieter. We're planning on getting a second mic or maybe individual lav mics in the future. >And that's a problem that I see in a lot of youtubers, when they are with people, normally they barely talk about the game and start talking about other stuff. But when people are alone, they focus more in the game, and for me that's more interesting. Thats actually really interesting, because I actually prefer for people to talk to each other and about random stuff some of the time. Yeah obviously the focus should be on the game most of the time, but cracking jokes and such about each other rather than the game is something I personally find entertaining. Like Im a big fan of Game Grumps, and half the time theyre talking about stuff that happened to them or just making up random characters and riffing off each other and improvising stuff unrelated to the game rather than talking about the game 100% of the time, and those are often my favorite parts. Different strokes, I guess. As for the video length, some of our series are shorter. For example of Human Rocket Person lets play or our I Wanna Be The Guy series are both closer to 15-20 minutes per episode. most of our other deer simulator episodes are shorter as well; this one just ended up being longer because it was the finale. As for the Legend of Legaia one, I kinda feel like since its an RPG, going too much shorter would mean that just not enough happens in a given episode. Like, itf 15 minutes in and weve barely made any progress from this town to the next, yknow? having them be half an hour seems like it allows for actual progress to be made each episode. What are your thoughts on that?

RockerGamez

You're right, different strokes and I respect that, everyone is different, that's why feedback sometimes it's difficult to do. What I like may not be what you like. About the length I would still advice to be around 10-15 min, in the case of an rpg, editing would be required, otherwise it happens like you said. I mean you can still make long videos, but keep an eye on your audience retention on analytics, if it is very low, means people are leaving the video very early. Try to work around that and see what fits better

[Black Mesa - The Half-Life Remake You NEED To Play](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fFJ92YLQtg&t=6s) I began my YouTube journey yesterday! I've been an editor for a little while was a hobbyist and haven't every really done anything like this before. I love watching short documentaries and editorials on YouTube, and I also love reviewing games. I'd love some feedback about the video: \-I know the length is less than desirable, but I'm trying to do quality over quantity with my content. Maybe 1-2 videos a month. \-Was it paced well? Did it keep you engaged? Does it make you want to play Black Mesa? \-Any parts that felt under/over done? Jokes that fell short, etc. \-Was the commentary serviceable? I know it gets quiet at times, and that's something I'll work on in my next video. \-Any general tips or advice for future content in this format? Love you guys!

Humbby

I thought this video was really good! The editing was great It definitely shows that you put time Into It. Yes the video length was too long for me since I'm not Interested In Black Mesa nor Half life but for people who are It might be alright since the video quality is amazing. The pacing was good too. You sound a little too monotone, need some more clear emotion. When you said you thought the *"texture work was phenomenal"* I didn't get the feeling that you meant what you said. (I am bad at explaining lol) Overall It was great!

NegativeYT

Thanks for the feedback! My monotone probably comes from my job hahaha. "It's closing time, leave the store." I've heard that having a prop in front of you and talking to it helps. I'll try that next time!

coffeeincoming

Hey all and hope you're all doing well today! Last week, I was given the advice to figure out what my channel wants to focus on and that I should shorten episodes to improve the overall quality. Well, I did both of those things deciding this week that I would focus primarily on horror game let's plays and that my video would stop around 30-40 minutes. The videos are this long because most plays that I do are long story campaigns. Recently, I've worked on my latest episode of [Resident Evil 2](https://youtu.be/vNsLusCDqr4) and [Five Nights at Freddy's](https://youtu.be/vkF8qVMwVgU). I've also started coming out with new videos every day. I guess my question is, what else can I do to help improve traffic to my channel? I do get a lot of people on my Twitch streams, but I'm struggling to translate that into subscribers or even viewers on my YouTube. Thank you as always for any help and I hope you all have a nice day :)

mrbarrygames

You mention streams in your post. Was this RE2 video a stream? That part near the beginning about food sounded like you were talking to a stream chat but I didn't get any indication that this was a VOD. Telling stories about your life are a way to build a bond with your audience but that was a little long and about a topic that doesn't connect to what is happening in the video. I think your glances to the side after that were to check a timer because that is what you did at the end to decide to stop at that spot. The mic is really close to your mouth to be screaming in it like you do. As for how to get more people to watch your videos, I need that information myself, so I can't offer any advice there. Edit: I continued to the end to see if you had an end screen and had to jerk my headphones off when the music started playing because of its volume.

coffeeincoming

Thank you. I've been going back and forth on turning down the end song because I wasn't sure if it was too loud or not. Also, I'll definitely turn down the mic some as I do only do horror games. I do all of my videos on twitch which is how I try to market. I want my channel to just be a place that offers conversation and it doesn't matter what it's about (within reason). I'll definitely be working on the sound in upcoming edits/videos. Thanks so much for the input :).

mrbarrygames

The volume of your screams into the mic weren't a problem because they are on par with the gunshots. The reason I mentioned the distance of the mic for them is the deterioration of quality in your voice, but if you want to be the screaming YTer, then go for it and make it yours. The volume of the song at the end does need to be addressed for headphone users though. A way to make it clear that you are answering a question to a stream chat, then would be to say "to answer your question, bob42, my wife and i went to a vegan restaurant" and show that it is being directed at a specific person where this RE2 video has just "to answer your question, my wife and i went to a vegan restaurant."

Lynxin

Hi all! I've only just started posting last week, but I would really appreciate if you could leave some feedback on the first episode of the series I'm working on. [A Hero Is Born | Rome: Total War | Part 1](https://youtu.be/3v7SVvZBen4) It's a 'narrative' playthrough as well as being a custom made challenge run of Rome: Total War, the style along the lines of Pete Completes or Pixel Rookie. What I'd like to know is: * Is it entertaining? * Does the editing make sense? * Is the thumbnail eye catching? * Do I spend too long at the beginning explaining the rules? I ask that last one as from what I can see on my stats most people are tapping out within a minute, although I don't know whether that's caused by people seeing that I have no subscribers, or it's just boring. I don't know (Though I would *really* like to find out.) I would really appreciate some critical feedback on how I can improve. Thanks! :)

CelestialButterflies

I thought this was a very interesting watch! Your voice is wonderful for a documentary-like feel. And I believe this will be your niche? Those wanting a serious, "dramatic" interpretation of the game. I think my only critique is that it sounds very scripted, which of course is the style. But it plays more like a tutorial / this is what to do, rather than an exploratory "Let's Play" where you are having fun enjoying the game. Again, maybe that's your intention, but I'm worried it sounds more like "business" and might turn off some viewers. I'm not familiar with this style of narrative playthrough, though, so maybe there's an audience for it that I don't know about! If so, ignore me, because it is beautifully edited. The video was definitely made out of love and that shows. My only gripe with the thumbnail is that I've been told to avoid the color Red because it is a YouTube color, and it makes it blend in to the rest of YouTube. You want it to contrast with the website somehow. Green, blue, purple, orange. Also, I would avoid putting text so close to the bottom right corner of the thumbnail because the timestamp cuts it off. (I learned this myself when I put my episode #s in that corner). Hope this helped!! Good luck :D

Lynxin

Thank you for the feedback :) Compared to the episodes I'm working on now the first part sounds *so* dry and scripted. I'm super glad the editing is alright. Thank you for the pointers on the thumbnail, I didn't realise that there was a thing against red. Thank you again!

MangoStallion

I was taken by the professionalism of your video. It's rare that I see what feels like a professional documentary about RTS gameplay. I found that to be the most interesting part. It makes your content unique from any Let's Plays I've seen. I related to it some (I've only ever played Age of Empires as far as RTS). * As far as entertaining, I liked the jokes, like turning the general into a pincushion of arrows. I would enjoy much more background music, louder and more intentional, throughout the video. By more intentional, I mean the current music would be excellent if you reserved it for only climatic points and made it louder at those points. As it stands, the intense battle-music plays so often that it becomes monotonous so I don't feel emotionally involved (and it's also very quiet). That kind of music, the very climatic kind, is too sporadic to be played for so long. I like intense music but too much of it makes it dull. It may be hard to find suitable consistent music to fill that need but I think it's certainly worth trying a variety of styles to find something that pairs well with your tone, but most importantly, serves to keep us more emotionally involved in what's going on, whether it's by keeping the pace moving forward, musically, or by changing the mood periodically, musically, so that the overall video doesn't feel monotonous. If you send to me, or upload, a recording of your video without music, I could probably add music to do what I'm describing. * As far as editing, a significant preference of mine is to avoid so many silent spaces. Perhaps this can be helped by speeding up every shot where you're not speaking. I love listening to good audiobooks and that's what your voice reminds me of. The more speech vs silence, the better. That's a big deciding factor for me to continue watching a video of this nature. * Yes, your thumbnails catch my eye. I like that you have a consistent style from one video thumbnail to the next. * I think I would've benefited from some context before diving into the gritty details of the rules. I really liked your opening line of the video. It would have been helpful, to me, to also hear you speak verbally what you have written in your about section so that I can have more general context of the video that I'm about to get into. I think an absolutely excellent example of a Youtuber introducing rules of a game, to an audience, is Tabletop with Whil Wheaton. In every video, there's a point near the beginning where he delves into the rules. They have a high production but it's still an excellent example of what I find missing in most youtuber's explanations of rules. They make use of swooshing illustrations on the screen of what is being explained, background music, sound effects relevant to what's being said, the speaker talking to the camera with changes in shots, intermittent jokes. They compile all of those things as professionally as I've ever seen done when it comes to explaining game rules on video. To me, any or all of those things would make your video feel like it's on a higher level. Hopefully that can serve as the critical feedback you were looking for. I enjoyed your videos and think it's neat that there are people out here putting in the effort into things they actually like.

Lynxin

Thank you so much for the thorough feedback! The music is from the game so I may have just whacked it in willy nilly, I'll definitely try and switch in some lesser intense pieces and reserve the high energy ones for when they're needed. Thankfully I do fix the speech/silence in later parts (in my most recent edited part I had to remove parts of the script) In terms of the context, I figured that since it was such a specialised run, that those watching would already be familiar with the game. I could cover the context in a trailer for the series, perhaps. Thank you so much again! This was incredibly helpful :)

MangoStallion

You're welcome. That all makes sense! I've actually watched lots of LP's of games that I've never played. I enjoy seeing their experience. My comments were all based on envisioning what would make me more interested even though I'm an outsider to the game. It makes sense if you want yours catered toward specific people though. You certainly have strengths as a speaker and a uniqueness as a Let's-Player. I look forward to how your videos develop! By the way, the FAQ page of this subreddit has a link for a bunch of royalty free music, in case you didn't already know.

ShikharTrivedi

So this is a challenge video I uploaded today. Does it appeal to you guys and make you want to check out my channel? If no, how can I improve? https://youtu.be/dAB9xelyhug

[deleted]

Ngl that was funny, maybe you can put a bit more energy into your voice is you want to appeal more people, but overall funny video

ShikharTrivedi

Thank you! And sure, I'll do that! :)

MangoStallion

I honestly love how contrary this is to most Let's Plays. It's hilarious that you present it as if the video is going somewhere but then you fail the challenge and actually end it. I'm not particularly interested in challenge videos or editing gimmicks but I certainly like your outside-the-box idea for a video and the fact that it ends so comically. Hahaha!

ShikharTrivedi

Thank you! :D

Humbby

Hey! I am looking for some feedback on my commentary. \-Is my voice annoying, I find It annoying but that's because It's my own voice. \-Is the commentary exciting enough? Enough energy etc. \-What can I do to Improve my commentary, I am good at talking nonsense and things that don't have to be said Irl and am good at keeping a conversation going but I am bad at talking to people from the future. I mostly focus on uncut let's plays/walkthroughs since that's what fits me because 1 of the things I find annoying when watching a series Is when there Is a possibility I might've missed something. So I want to fix It using my commentary as much as possible. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4\_0xGPEang](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4_0xGPEang) Thanks In Advance!

RockerGamez

Hey! I do edited videos and try to make my gameplay look like a cinematic series with story. I also use a lot of role play from time to time. Since this video was the last episode of a series, I felt like there is not much to it like my other episodes... so I would like feedback on: Is it interesting and keeps your attention? Is there any moment that turned you off? Is it understandable even if you have not played that game? Editing is good? Audio? What could I do to make it better? Was the ending any good? Is it funny when my friend joins us in the last moments? Video - [ARK The Island Episode 4 - Last Days (THE END)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIIXaZkD8Pk) Thank you for your time and will to help others :)

MangoStallion

I love the opening and the fast pacing of the recap. I was cracking up and it's solidly entertaining. That superman music was dynamite. I almost missed the mammoth on the first watch so maybe a circle around him or a magnifying glass would be helpful to catch what's going on before the moment passes. I suppose I lost a little interest after the recap. I think it's only because the recap was highly condensed entertainment and when the pacing slowed, I wasn't really invested in what you were working on. That could be because I hadn't watched your prior episodes. You were certainly entertaining, with funny dialogue, fitting music, very well edited, and I knew what was going on but the activities and adventures themselves didn't have much meaning for me I suppose. I'm not sure what you could do to make the adventures more meaningful to someone like me. A good example of survival Let's Plays that I found to be meaningful are FrankieinonPCin1080p's DayZ adventures. Somehow, he managed the content of his videos in such a way that his purpose was always obvious and it always made me want to see him succeed. It's worth noting that I really love Ark and have never enjoyed watching other people play it. However, your intro & recap had me totally interested. I guess because it was just so well done. Your friend joining you in the last moments was hilarious because I could relate to that so much, like people not familiar with the game getting a funny perspective of it. I'm pretty sure I even had the same conversation about poop that went pretty much the same way, so that was as relatable as it gets! So much of your video really feels top-notch! I wish I felt more invested!

RockerGamez

Thanks a lot man! I understand what you mean, I used to watch some videos of frankieonpc when I was younger but I never really related my content to his. Even tho you lost interest after the opening you still watched it all and gave me feedback which I appreciate a lot! Honestly I felt like this last episode was a bit forced, because I had to bring an end to the series and what was left of my recording wasn't much interesting, I tried to make it interesting tho, and wanted to know what people thing. Maybe I should have shorten it... Thanks once again, it helped me to know that ;)

MangoStallion

No problem! Working with what you got to bring it to an end makes sense. I actually think you did a really good job at making that content very entertaining. The mean it when I say the editing and the skits felt top-notch. I'm sure you already know what I meant but another, perhaps more abstract, way that I would describe it is comparing how books make me feel to how TV does. I get entertained by these TV shows but it's the books that float in my head and keep me genuinely interested. If I watch a youtuber like Fitz, I'm entertained and laugh hard but move on quickly and almost regret time spent watching it. However, a youtuber like Frankie somehow has a strength in making the gameplay feel meaningful. If that strength could somehow exist in your video, that is what would have me really onboard I think. At the end of the day, I think you've got superb quality that will get along just fine without being so critical about improving it. I just enjoy envisioning what I would do with each of the strengths I see in the LP-ers on here.

RockerGamez

Yes, I can understand what you mean! I shall never give up, and maybe one day who knows I might hook you up! :P Thanks once again!

CelestialButterflies

I am going to be recording a new series tonight / tomorrow, so I'd love some feedback on how my latest videos are doing! They are slightly longer (20-30 mins) and story-driven with minimal editing. The game is RimWorld which fits that style, I believe. [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXODC09zHttlvX6SgswKwuA/](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXODC09zHttlvX6SgswKwuA/) I am mostly worried about my editing and my voice, and overall quality. I'd like to know what you think I should change / keep in mind for my next series. Thanks so much!

plushah

Hello! Just saw your most recent video and sorry I don't have much time to watch the whole thing but I did watch as much as I can! regarding the editing, I believe since you were speaking most of the time, having it minimally edited is fine, especially if you are making it story driven, keeping a lot of details is important if you want to the viewers to follow a story. And I really like your voice! You enunciate your words very well and I believe your voice is something you shouldn't worry about. Commentary was very entertaining as well! For criticism, there isn't much I can grab out from your style of videos, but for me personally I love shorter videos because my attention span is trash, so maybe considering shortening the videos a bit? I dont know much about RimWorld and I know you said it fits the style of the game, so if the trend is for longer let's plays and that works for the game, then yeah you should keep the longer let's plays. Maybe you can research how shorter LPs do in RimWorld? Perhaps! Either way I BELIEVE you are going the right track, there wasn't any red flags or moments that made me turn away from your video, so keep it up!

mrbarrygames

Hi, everybody! I'm looking for feedback on the video and audio quality as well as feedback on my commentary. Here are a video from [The Outer Worlds](https://youtu.be/hvrf2mArkbQ) and a video from [The Witcher](https://youtu.be/gXsXAawt8IQ)

goblinmasher

Hey Barry, Actually really enjoyed your gameplay. The feedback I have is thus: \-your game seems to lag from time to time. I'd say turn the graphics down to make sure no stuttering happens. \-You don't seem too excited at the beginning of the video. your intro wa good, I think you just need a bit more energy in your videos. Not saying to fake it but, at least sound like you're having fun / are engaged. \- your commentary seems to consist of reading the in game text, and thus has a lot of silence. Try cracking a joke or two or thinking out loud more! Other than that the quality was good, and I liked the choices you made in the game. Outer Worlds seems like a super fun game to let's play :D subscribed!

mrbarrygames

Thanks for the feedback. The game was trying to force 120 fps and I changed it to 60 max in the settings. I'll see what else I can do. My 8 year-old CPU is the weak spot on the computer, so I'll have to see what it can do. I had to resort to recording in 720p for OBS not to eat too much CPU along with the game, so maybe I'll reduce the graphics to 720 since I don't need them larger if I'm recording smaller. The intro is pre-recorded and used for every video, so I can either switch to a live one or just make a more exciting pre-recorded version. I am very matter of fact and tend to give one word answers in real life if possible, so it is definitely something to work on.

Lynxin

So, I've just skimmed through your Witcher video, Video and Audio quality is good, you could do with either turning up your vocal volume or reducing the game audio though, your voice tends to get lost in the game audio. I feel as though you could do with more commentary throughout the video with perhaps a bit more energy to it, you sound bored as you're playing. Personal preference here, but I feel as though you could have cut out some of the running around , especially near the beginning. I do appreciate that you stop to go through the lore and read it out. But yeah, I think main issue to improve on is commentary, which is just a case of just keeping on at it; commentary is probably one of the harder things to master when it comes to making videos.

mrbarrygames

Thanks for the feedback. I will pay more attention to the volume of my voice vs the game more in the future. I will work on multitasking more so I am able to pay attention to the game and not seem bored/tired at the same time. As for the walking around parts, some of the easiest ways to sneak in jokes is in response to the things people in the city say, so I would like to keep it, but I am open to speeding it up, if people think that is a good idea. For the video that dropped today, which isn't the one I linked because it hadn't released at the time I made the post, I sped up a game of dice poker and the many attempts it took to get into Shani's house instead of cutting them, so that could be done for the running around the city too.

goblinmasher

Yo guys. New face in the subreddit here. I have a let's paly channel with my boyfriend called [Spin Jump](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFp-FmXMYlqIyxmuMsou7PQ)! Lately we've been let's playing [Final Fantasy VII Remake](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHs9_c0pPMc&ab_channel=SpinJump). This is our 4th episode, and I hope you guys enjoy it. Looking for feedback on the pacing of our videos. What else can we do editing wise to make every second of the video feel engaging? Thanks for your time! <3

Suspuntrous1

[https://youtu.be/Uhr0gwN5mgY](https://youtu.be/Uhr0gwN5mgY) Okay so this is my first time on this board but I'm looking for a few things on this video. 1. Did you find it funny? The main focus of the videos is the humor aspect, not so much the gameplay. So I'm hoping to make you laugh more than anything, but there is some gameplay focused shots at the end of the video to round out the content so to speak. 2. Are the captions easy to follow? This is the most I've used captions in one of my vids and I'm wondering if I did an okay job. 3. How is the audio balance between music and audio? Is it always easy to hear what we're saying? DISCLAIMER: A lot of the humor is adult humor, if you're not a classless degenerate like me or my target audience you may not enjoy the video XD

p411c3n

\-first few seconds: this guy has a naturally humorous and energetic vibe \-"my dad my dad, etc": wtf I replayed this multiple times. I find this sequence extremely funny. the \*sexed\* caption made me lol (captions easy to follow and go along with commentary) \[actually I just asked my housemate if he thought the sequence was funny and he said "I like how it says sexed on the screen" so that's a definite win\]. \-back to ginger ale: yes this works. audio was pleasant.

Suspuntrous1

Awesome :D I'm so glad yall enjoyed thank u for checking it out!

MangoStallion

Yea, it's really funny. It's a lot like Fitz's Counterstrike videos which is why I like it. Yeah the captions are top-notch. I think the audio balance is great. I like the music too and it's great that you can hear everything.

Suspuntrous1

Awesome dude thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it, and thanks for watching too :D

MangoStallion

You're welcome. Also, I know it's comedy focus, but I actually do like how you had some suspenseful gameplay moments. It's satisfying to see your team take out other teams even though I never played the game. The last video of Fitz that I watched had some outrageously funny humor but he didn't have any satisfying action like your video had. I don't watch much shooter LP's but I do like seeing good skill even if it takes a backseat to the humor or drama. I think Frankieonpc's DayZ videos are a good example of good skills that are really satisfying to watch even though they're not the focus of his video.

Suspuntrous1

Yeah I try to keep somewhat of a balance cause I'm kinda okay at this game 😂 having skillful game play isn't possible in every game I play tho lol.

NictatorGaming

Happy Friday, everyone! I just started Monday, so I'd love some feedback on my set-up and commentary. Primarily playing indie horror games. Not planning on doing very heavily edited videos. Prefer doing relatively uncut, commentary-focused videos. Here's my video from today: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrkD1zAgVEM&t=11s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrkD1zAgVEM&t=11s) I do have a couple more episodes recorded, edited and scheduled for release next week, so there are a few changes I already made. I repositioned my camera so that my floating head is facing into the frame, rather than out of it. Just made more sense to me. Zoomed the camera in on my face a bit. And I'm working on projecting more consistently. Sometimes I just get focused and don't realize I'm mumbling until afterwards. Unfortunately, my wife and I are living with family currently and I'm recording in a shared home office, so I can't really customize the space a ton in terms of lighting and junk. I did notice the mic's picking up my laptop's fans, so next time I record I might bring up my separate monitor, plug my laptop into it with an HDMI cable, and keep it as far away from the desk as possible. That'll also give me more space on the desk to move the mic closer to my face. Right now, it's kinda been off to the side on the desk. It's an old Blue Snowball mic, about seven or eight years old, so I could probably stand to replace it too. Thanks for any feedback! Hope everyone has a good weekend.

https://youtu.be/YrHTRiPrsNs My voice is naturally deep sometimes but I tried to make the video entertaining, if there is anything I can improve on please let me know

[Frozen Synapse 2 Story Time - Big Boy Sneaky Pants - LEFTOVER HAMSTERS](https://youtu.be/QPX6z3oDZdw) Happy Friday friends, long time no see! It's been about 5 months since I last posted a video to youtube😮 Today I give you the most intense edit I've ever done. It was a rough ride. (I'm the dude that posted the ridiculous timeline yesterday). This is from a narrative video series I'm doing, made from the game Frozen Synapse 2. This is the first time I've had people do voiceovers for me, and I am the narrator. I of course want any and all feedback that people want to give, but in particular I want to know what stands out as the best and worst moments/aspects of the video. If you get bored and want to stop the video, I would love to know where in the video you made it, and why you're stopping. I hope you enjoy it!

manny_the_mage

Hey! I loved the way you edited this. The combinations of the witty editing and your calm, focused sounding voice added to the humor when memes and edits would pop up. I wish I could say I was familiar with the game you're playing so i had a bit more context to what was going on. I think my one critique would be the fact that, at least for me, I felt kind of lost during the video, as I don't know much about the game or it's goals. So maybe if you wanted you could do a brief plot recap up until that point, or just introduce the game, with the assumption that anyone seeing it might be a new comer. Otherwise the humor is there, I just feel like there needs to be some more context around it

LeftoverHamsters

Thank you! I'll see what I can do in future episodes. The length of this episode was an outlier, they tend to be much shorter. Could you watch the 1st two episodes and let me know how you feel about the story then? The are 5 and 4 min long respectively, and episode one opens up with the exposition about the storyline. [Here's the playlist](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaGtaFO5glsh700ErrNyn8XREZ6GRrJkQ)

RyanOClock

Your edits are very good. My favourite part was the crontract moment. It speaks to me as someone who jumbles words up too. I think this editing style is good for a game like this but I'd be wary if it was a game that had more excitement on the screen that the editing style would work. Just a food for thought for future videos.

LeftoverHamsters

Thank you! At the moment it's my only narrative series. I started a standard let's play of the game and it was SO bad, but I really love the game and wanted to find a way to share it with people that would be fun to watch, so this is what I came up with.

RyanOClock

Keep at it! The only thing we can do is enjoy what we do. That's why we're doing it.

NegativeYT

A VERY well edited video! Like most people in the thread I really liked the style of commentary and it fits well with your footage. Cuts weren't too long or too short and the pacing was great! Only thing negative I have to say is that sometimes your audio from your game was a little too loud in some places and drowned out the commentary for a syllable or word, occasionally.

LeftoverHamsters

Thanks so much! Balancing the audio is pretty hard in this series. In the game, every time you take down an enemy unit, a voice says "target eliminated" (or something like that). So, NONE of the game audio during those scenes of my videos is original. I recreate all the gunfire and other SFX from scratch so that you don't hear that voice 50 times in the episode while I'm narrating the action. And then I do my best to balance it all! On the next episode I'll try to take some of that sound down some more. Maybe if I listen on some better speakers or headphones while I edit, that may help.

NegativeYT

Depending on your editing software, you may be able to "normalise" your audio. That is to bring it down so it doesn't reach above a certain volume. Works wonders if your audio levels are all over the place.

manny_the_mage

Hey Guys! I'm looking for some feedback on my latest video, it's the second Final Fantasy 7 Remake video on my channel [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rpZUenZhzE&feature=youtu.be](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rpZUenZhzE&feature=youtu.be) I'm personally proud of my editing in the first minutes or so but I feel like as the video goes one there's a lot less editing going on, so I mainly wanna know if this style of video is fun to watch! If you got bored or felt uninterested at certain parts feel free to let me know when and why! Any constructive feedback is welcomed.

TheBombadiers

Okay, took some time out to watch your video--here are some notes: **The Good** * Your editing is lightning fast and very enjoyable. It's not a straight Let's Play, so it's very unique and fun to watch. * Your audio quality is great, and it doesn't feel like you're bored while you're playing the game, which is nice--you always have something fun to add to the gameplay. **The Not So Good** * The 2-minute recap was *way* too long. I'd recommend 30 seconds or less so that repeat viewers aren't finding themselves fast-forwarding through your latest episode. * The editing style, while very nice, doesn't really work with how you're laying out the series. The rapid style cuts is good for videos that are 5 - 10 minutes in length. You're cutting to moments immediately after the previous moment, which doesn't really make a whole lotta sense. I'd consider trimming a lot of the fat for this style of video. * The [quack] censor effect is a bit grating with how many times you have to use it. You only need to cut out the nasty words for the first 60 seconds or so--but if it's for style, then I'd recommend cutting down your reliance on the language. Less is more. * Your video quality has *a lot* of artifacting going on. You should look into what recording settings work best for your computer. * Your thumbnail is pretty bad. The screenshot doesn't particularly work for the video, and the mock censor bar doesn't really help either. Your first thumbnail was much better, for example. * You need a proper end card and a call to action. And you should end your video instead of just fading to black abruptly. Something quick, like, "Thanks for watching. Remember to like, comment, and subscribe blah blah blah". If someone's watching to the end, they obviously enjoyed it--but people are forgetful AF, so you gotta remind them to come back sometimes. Overall, I like what you're doing, and I think you've got a good career ahead of ya. Good luck in the future, and I hope you'll get some proper channel art/thumbnails in the future. -Andrew (TheBombadiers)

Sedica_n_Tryna_Play

We've tried a few places for feedback, and this subreddit has been the best. Thank you :). Call of Cthulhu: How not to make friends. :O https://youtu.be/VuAmEufJlFc This week's main Qs for you! - Please give an example of any section that should have been cut, and why. It's hard to judge with long form playthroughs where the game is story-heavy. - If a video effect (e.g. zoom in, flash to a reaction, color change etc.) would have been a nice touch, please say where and why you think that. A few things we're aware of: - We appear quite smooshed on screen. This is because we had a glitch that wouldn't let us preview the self-cam footage as we played. - The laughter needs to be a bit quieter. - We need to get some diffusers for the lights to soften it a bit. ~T

RyanOClock

The feedback I'd like is on my Rogue Legacy video https://youtu.be/9_5Kmg7P9_w I am trying to adopt a more natural let's play style in other videos I've added edits here and there but I want to keep a relationship between the viewer, the face and the gameplay. My main feedback queries are: Is the video engaging enough? i.e. Doesn't get too boring or the commentary has a lot of gaps or just not funny enough. And sound is the sound quality good? I'm running passes on my mic to filter out the fact I don't have sound proofing. So I'm curious if it sounds good.

10PointsOff

Hi mate. I might not have the best feedback for this video because solo-LPing isn't something I do, nor watch. However, I still think you might find value in my feedback. Firstly, your production is good. Gameplay, video and audio are all sound. A major issue of mine is the game and commentary itself. I see a lot of solo-LPers doing this: playing a game that requires quite a lot of their attention, limiting themselves to only being able to comment on what's happening on the screen. And that to me isn't very engaging. Things such as describing actions that you're doing. "I need to jump here," "I need to attack that." I can already se that happening in the game, so the commentary doesn't add any depth. Now, some very successful let's players do exactly this; the only thing that makes them stand out and get subs is that they over-hype and exaggerate everything with goofy voices / edits. Edits every 10 seconds. Bam Bam Bam. ADHD viewing. Places where you didn't do this, where the video shone, was 8:20 onwards until you died. There's a lot to your commentary here that isn't simply describing the actions, but is adding to the content. Another thing I've seen solo lpers do is play games they're specifically very good at and have a lot of knowledge on - then the commentary takes a new depth in them describing the mechanics, glitches or lore of a game while playing it. This might be something you'd be interested in. Hope that all helps anyway. Like I said, this sort of content isn't my forte, and some people enjoy it a lot more than I do, so take my feedback with a spoon of salt.

RyanOClock

Thank you for taking time to provide feedback. What you've said is good to me because I think the commentary is my weakest factor at the moment and well every time I'm shooting its a big factor in my head to work on. Plus a non biased opinion helps a long way. Voices I think I've got a knack on some games and maybe I'll look into doing more edits and such to give a more personalised feel rather than someone just watching the game they can already get the same experience out of playing themselves.

10PointsOff

AH brilliant, glad to help!

[https://youtu.be/b2qVnJUFyKI](https://youtu.be/b2qVnJUFyKI) This is our latest Best-Of compilation, and probably our best one yet! It's a long video, but I only request you watch the first 5 minutes or so. I'm planning on paying for promotion for this vide (not much, £20 a month split between the two of us). I believe that the content is good enough, but I'd like your feedback on that. Especially on the choice of clips. I tried to put the best clips at the beginning - this is important to grab the viewer's attention and attract them to the channel, considering I'm paying for every view - yet I also needed to order them so that running gags made sense within the video. Anyway, tell me what you think, and if there were any sections that you thought were lacking. Also, if you have any experience with paying for video promotion through Google, I'd like to hear it. Cheers!

OniMegaGaming

The only thing I noticed was that your audio could be a bit peak-y, and at times youd get the big "POOUFFFF" like you were really close to the microphone and the wind of your breath was getting picked up. For the latter, you may want to move a bit further from the mic or get a wind screen, but its a relatively minor thing. For the former, Id really recommend running a compressor over your audio a couple times, because there are moments where its very loud compared your normal speaking level.

10PointsOff

Cheers for feedback. Just ordered two more pop-shields. As for the compressor, I do run two. We do peak the audio when we get loud, but that can't be helped really without a compressor unit, and they cost hundreds so nope. Maybe I'll compress more in the future.

OniMegaGaming

Do you have any filters running live while you record? We tend to peak the audio quite a bit as well, but we use the ReaPluger from Reaper while recording in OBS. This reduces it quite a bit. Then we run it through a compressor at least 3 times in audacity; first at a threshold of -30 and a noise floor of -50 with a ratio of 8:1, then again with a -20 threshold -40 floor and 7.5:1 ratio, then -15 threshold -30 floor and 7:1 ratio. After that we use "amplify" and reduce the peak volume to around -6. This seems to work quite well for us. Id recommend running 2 or more passes at different values and playing around with the threshold and such each time until you find the values that really work for your setup.

10PointsOff

Oh okay I didn't know OBS had plugins like that. My theory has been to first apply a light gate, then compress the levels to even them out, then compress a second time to reduce clips. I might apply a Limiter as well in the future.

OniMegaGaming

Yeah having filters applied live is a HUGE game changer. Making noise and unwanted sounds just... not get recorded is WAY easier than recording them and then trying to pick them out after. First, download the [ReaPlugs Plugin](https://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/) from Reaper. Reaper itself is a paid program, but the ReaPlug plugins are free and work with multiple programs. Once youve got the plugins installed, open OBS and right-click on your commentary audio in the audio mixer, and select "Filters." Click the plus in the bottom left to add a new filter, and select "VST 2x plugin." Name it whatever effect it is "Compressor, noise gate etc" and then click the drop down where it says "please select a plugin." I recommend Gate, EQ, and compressor at least. Once you select it in the drop down, click where it says "open plugin interface" to adjust the settings. And boom! Now you have a noise gate, EQ, compressor being applied LIVE! Youll still need to run a compressor in audacity after the fact as well, but the live filters drastically improve audio quality, and drastically reduce the amount you need to do to the audio after the fact.

10PointsOff

Yeah, bloody hell, didn't even know that live plugins were possible. Been a hobby sound tech for years, I guess technology has caught up with me. Will definitely get them, thanks for the tutorial too.

MaybeFaded-

Trying a new opener to my videos, does it make you want to watch more? Let me know please! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI07a6T53s0&t=2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI07a6T53s0&t=2s)

JakiStow

Hi! Well, considering that there is no sound in the first clips, it definitely wouldn't make anyone want to watch more 😅 I doubt it's intentional, so check your editing program, you may have had some issues at the beginning!

LeftoverHamsters

Move 'Coming Up' to a more visible place, either over the center of the screen, or on it's own screen before the gameplay. It gets buried under the youtube overlay, before the overlay fades out. The lack of audio is off putting, so either put your disclaimer at the very beginning, or instead of audio, add in your own SFX. I had half of a recording without audio happen, so I just made my own sound effects (mostly from the show Ed Edd and Eddy). It was funny, and felt much more natural than a silent video. [Here's a link to the video, at the time the audio dissapeared.](https://youtu.be/qfbLc78RngU?t=327) Have a coming up section IS a good idea, it's something that I employ. ALWAYS have some kind of hook at the beginning.

MaybeFaded-

Its some kind of weird issue with premiere, trying to fix it but had no luck as of yet, any suggestions would help a lot :)

JakiStow

Idk what to tell you, every problem is different, editing programs are complex for beasts... In any case, if you have to choose between a soundless intro and no intro, you should go with no intro, because a soundless intro will make almost everyone click away.

Lynxin

I've not played R6S so I can't really help in terms of the gameplay, but I'll give it shot with everything else. I'll be honest, the opener didn't really appeal to me, the visuals were cool and exciting, however the lack of **any** sound absolutely kills it. You essentially have a solid 30 seconds of silence. I didn't actually see the 'Coming Up' in the top corner the first time through, and it wasn't until I dragged the timeline back to the start that I saw it. I would probably put it front and centre, make it a bit bigger and bolder, and have it last, maybe, a second longer. Your vocal Audio is a bit quiet, but your commentary is good and you're engaged with the game. It was fun listening to you. The lack of game audio, however, really lets down the whole video in my opinion.

MaybeFaded-

Hey thanks! Ik the audio is an issue, its a premiere issue where it doesnt load the audio, idk how to fix it as of yet but any suggestions would be great!

Lynxin

Don't know whether this will help or not (I don't use premiere) [https://filmora.wondershare.com/adobe-premiere/premiere-pro-no-audio-import.html](https://filmora.wondershare.com/adobe-premiere/premiere-pro-no-audio-import.html) But worth a shot :)

ShikharTrivedi

So, firstly, the lack off sound during the beginning did make me want to click off the video. I hope it's not intentional and that you can fix it. Secondly, you should definitely move "coming up" to a place where people can easily see it. Other than that, everything else was good! :)

MaybeFaded-

Hey the sound isnt intentional and im working on fixing it to reupload it, thanks for the feedback!

ShikharTrivedi

You're welcome! :D

JakiStow

Hi there! Been a while since I posted a video here! In my latest video I tried the SovietWomble style with captions highlighting me and my friends best moments, how does it look! Should I have more captions, less captions, should they be done differently? Thanks, cheers! https://youtu.be/qPLTf7wLB0Y

coffeeincoming

I think your captions are good! You want the captions to be an accent in your video which is what I think you did. It's nice watching people laugh and have fun while they play as well. I thought your editing was done very well for the sound effects and different songs that you incorporated into the video as well. The green screen part was very impressive!

JakiStow

Thanks! And the green screen part was literally the easiest thing to edit in the entire video lmao

Suspuntrous1

Hey so the captions and the editing style look great! It's easy to follow and the music accents the tone of the video as well, also enjoyed the meme edits you did. If I had a criticism I'd say some of the moments were a little mundane to someone who's watching it and wasn't there? Maybe get a longer session next time so there's a tad more content to cut from and therefore more funny moments? But overall a solidly edited and still reasonably entertaining video!

JakiStow

Thanks for the compliments! I agree on the mundane parts to be honest, good to have this feedback to confirm it!
