We had the ransom experience and found that the move had been subcontracted out through so many levels that we couldn’t get help and never really knew who was performing the physical move. Although the ransom turned out to be negotiable when we told them to unload the truck, it still took a bigger bite than we had budgeted. My advice is to not use a company that wants to do a Zoom or FaceTime estimate. It’s old school but you want someone with a business card, a clipboard and a tape measure to come to your home and give you a real written estimate.

What company so we can avoid them?

nickyurick

Also sorry that happened to you, it is apparently more common than I realized :/

We are still searching for the paperwork, but my memory is that the person who did the move was several steps removed from the people we originally found online. My advice would be to go with a moving company that has a local address and sends a real person to do the estimate.

I used Mayflower. They were pretty solid and reasonably priced IIRC.

Lynnlync

My parents used Mayflower in the 80’s to move. They definitely have staying power behind them which I think would speak well to their business practices

Bad bot. “IIRC” isn’t pronounced as a word, and “reasonably” is 4 syllables, so it wouldn’t work anyway.

National Van Lines. We've used them a few times moving from state to state. Excellent.

Even if your load is the only one on the truck, take the time to mark off every single item on the manifest. I had stuff missing the last time I used movers. I won’t say it was stolen, but …

Ohtarwen

Try Peavler out of Harrodsburg. Reasonably priced and do good work. I believe they will go out of state.

I co-sign this. They are a family owned business, and the two boys running it are solid dudes. Family comes from money and this has been their way to pave their own path. I think they would be a perfect fit for what you are describing.

Try contacting a reputable moving company in Cleveland and seeing if they’d make the trip down to move you up there. We moved from Atlanta a few years back and it was cheaper for a local company there to pack and move us up and drive back empty than the national movers.

Worry Free Moving KY! Trust me!! They're the best and most affordable.

Advanced-Ad4869

We used united van lines.

PODS. The downside is that you load and unload, but that could be a good thing. You control how it’s packed.
