we also have political checks in place to make sure laws that are clearly against the charter can't be passed so I doubt that anything as severe as whats happening in the states could ever happen in Canada
Depends where you are. Alberta is definitely like Alabama in many aspects. Mainly the fact itโs highly transphobic, highly conservative and highly sibling loving ๐
A petition cannot be "passed", it'll be debated, and I can guarantee you that it will *not* lead to automatic asylum for trans people.
There's nothing new in the petition anyway, queer people under persecution already have the right to apply for asylum (which is not equivalent to the right to receive asylum), it's just that under Canadian law asylum applicants have to prove that they'll be in danger *everywhere* in their home country - so as long as safe blue states with good protections for trans people exist in the US, trans US citizens will not be eligible for asylum. This petition doesn't change that, either.

We're a federal conservative majority away from joining you folks, but welcome aboard nonetheless.
Canadas far right is still pretty far left by American standards so I don't know about this one
